“Your what?” said Dane, incredulous.
“Mate,” said Cara, staring at Lucas in shock.
Dane felt like the ground beneath him was shaking, as though at any minute it would crack and send him plummeting downwards. Everything was falling apart.
Not only was he not appointed Beta, he was so far down the ranking he was a nobody. To top it all off, the love of his life had finally found her mate, and it was the guy who’d screwed him over.
Dane ran a hand over his shaved head. If he had longer hair, he’d be tugging it in frustration.
Lucas took a step towards Cara with his hand outstretched and took her hands in his. The sparks of the mate-bond rushed over their skin, leaving a pleasurable electric sensation. Cara gasped, she hadn’t expected the feeling to be so strong.
“I...this...it’s too much,” she said as she yanked her hands out of Lucas’ grip.
Lucas watched with confusion as she turned on her heel and fled. That scent, her scent, it was so familiar. He was positive he’d smelt it before, but surely if he had, his wolf would have recognised his mate. He turned back to Dane, eager to clear the air about his position in the pack, when he noticed Dane’s scent.
It suddenly hit him. That’s why Cara smelt so familiar. He had, in fact, smelt her on numerous occasions - but it was always mixed with the scent of the man standing in front of him.
“You and Cara…” he began, not really sure what to say or how to say it.
“Yes,” replied Dane icily. “Me and Cara.”
Shit, thought Lucas. Things just took an even sharper turn south. He needed Dane on his side. Building his warrior army and strengthening the pack was a key part of his plan, and Dane was the best person for the job.
“Look, Dane, I know things may not have gone the way we agreed today, but at least let me explain.”
“Not now. I need to make sure Cara’s ok.”
“Sure,” he conceded, although wasn’t thrilled at the idea of Dane consoling Cara. His fists clenched and his jaw ticked at the thought of it.
Dane nodded at Lucas and turned to chase after Cara. He knew her well and knew she’d have headed straight home. Their home. The thought sent a pang of panic through him. How much longer was it going to be their home? How long until she left him for that schemer, Lucas?
He and Cara had always talked about this moment, when one of them found their mate, and he’d thought he would be totally fine with it. The Moon Goddess paired Cara with Lucas for a reason. But now the time had finally come, he realised it wasn’t going to be so easy. He wasn’t prepared to let Cara go.
Cara looked up, stunned, as Dane entered their house. She’d already changed out of her tight dress and heels and was instead in sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt, her long brown hair thrown up in a messy bun.
She could tell from Dane’s pinched expression and the way he hovered in the entryway that his emotions were just as messy as her own were.
“What the hell, Dane, I have a mate? I didn’t think either of us would ever find our mates.”
He walked over to the couch and sat down beside her, wrapping his arms around her and holding her close. Normally this was all she needed to feel safe and secure - why wasn’t it helping now?
“Neither did I,” he said simply, not knowing what to say to her.
“And not just any mate, the fucking Alpha. Are you serious? Me, the pack’s Luna?” she laughed shakily.
“Hmm, yeah,” he returned her laugh, weakly. “Who would have thought?”
“Is that all you’re going to say?” she asked, her tone of voice raising slightly.
She had so many overwhelming thoughts and feelings clashing in her mind, and yet he was just sitting there giving generic answers, as though they were talking about the weather. He showed more emotion watching the damn news on TV each night.
“What do you want me to say?” he replied.
She knew that tone. It held a small warning, but she wasn’t in the mood to heed it. In the back of her mind, she knew she was being unreasonable, but she just couldn’t help it.
“Um, I don’t know. Maybe that you’re happy for me. Or maybe, ‘don’t be silly babe, you’ll make an amazing Luna.’ Literally anything other than what you just said.”
“So you’re accepting him then? Just like that? Not even a thought about me or our eight years together, or the fact that if you didn’t meet him today, you’d be wearing my mark tomorrow morning?”
Cara bowed her head as the guilt hit her. She had loved this man sitting next to her since high school, they’d been together through everything. From the moment she’d met him, she wanted nothing more than to wear his mark, be his mate. Be his.
She had just had it within her reach, but now… now he was reduced to nothing. He was shoved down the pack ranking, and instead of holding the envious status of the Beta’s mate, she was also nothing if she stayed with him.
She had spent too many years being looked down on for her Omega status, and her hands started to tremble as she thought of going back to that working-class way of life.
“Dane! Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you?” she screeched, as she stood up and stalked across the room.
“I don’t know what you expect me to say,” he replied. “You want me to sit here and tell you I’m happy that you’re mates with that arsehole?”
“I thought you were friends with him? That’s why we hatched this little plan of ours with him.”
“You saw how well that went today. He completely fucked me. And now he gets you as a cherry on top. And you want me to be happy about it?”
Dane could feel his composure slipping and he didn’t like it. He was used to being in control of every situation, but today everything was spiralling.
“And now I get to choose between an Alpha and a...oh, I’m sorry, do you even have a title anymore?”
Her breath left her in a whoosh as Dane quickly closed the distance between them and gripped her throat tightly. He pushed her back against the wall forcefully, pressing his forehead to hers and locking eyes.
“You’re mine,” he grit out. “Title or not, you’re mine.”
He noticed the moment her eyes flickered from fear to lust. She was so predictable. He loosened his grip and moved his hand from her throat to the back of her neck, and kissed her roughly. She was already tearing at his clothes to get to him.

Lucas hadn’t been able to settle after meeting Cara. His wolf, Lando, was champing at the bit to claim his mate and was making it impossible for Lucas to hold a conversation with anyone at The Commons.
He knew he should probably give his mate the space she’d clearly asked for, but the thought of Dane being there with her only made things worse. He’d mingled with the crowd and covertly gotten the low-down on their relationship from some of the former Cape Point Pack members. To his dismay, it was much worse than he expected.
With Lando so on edge, he decided to leave Beta Thomas in charge of the fanfare and track Cara down.
As he approached the quaint little cottage house, his lip curled up into a sly grin as he heard raised voices. He didn’t know what kind of person it made him, but he was happy the two lovebirds were fighting, and he perversely hoped it was because of him.
He lifted his fist to knock on the door, but paused mid-air. The angry shouting had been replaced by banging and crashing and...moaning? Yep, definitely moaning, he thought.
Black fur began protruding from his arms as Lando tried to force him to shift. He wanted nothing more than to break down the door and leave Dane lying in a pool of blood for touching his mate.
Taking a few deep breaths, Lucas regained control of his wolf and quickly left. He would have to think the situation over carefully before doing anything impulsive and possibly ruining his chances with Cara.
Lying in bed later that night, Dane couldn’t help but run his hands over Cara’s pert behind as she lay with her head on his chest.
“I meant what I said earlier,” he said, his voice low and husky. “You’re mine. I want you to reject him.”
She lifted her head and propped herself up on her side to look at him. She wondered if he even knew what he was asking of her.
“Dane, I don’t want to leave you either, but how can I reject him? It would be like rejecting the Moon Goddess herself. I don’t know if I’m strong enough to withstand that kind of pain.”
“You are. We’ll do it together, just like we’ve done everything together up to this point. Look at what he just did to me. I don’t trust him, Cara. How could you even trust someone like that?”
As Cara drifted off to sleep in his arms, Dane lay awake, restless. He vowed there and then, he would do whatever it took to keep her away from Lucas and give her the life she deserved.
He knew he would need to play a ruthless game to regain his title and his rightful position in the pack. It was a game in which he saw only one winner, and many losers, but he wouldn’t let anybody stand in his way.
Then, he would finally claim Cara as his chosen mate.
Cara hadn’t slept much in the last few days and it was starting to catch up with her. Every night she was restless, tossing and turning as her mind was consumed with the decision she would have to make.Elusive as it was, sleep offered no reprieve, as even her dreams were plagued with visions of the man who owned her heart, and the mate who could give her the future every she-wolf yearns for.Dane was right, though. As much as she longed to leave her Omega status behind and have her place in the pack secured, she loved Dane and couldn’t just throw away their history together and her feelings for him.Kissing him goodbye as he left for the packhouse, she felt at peace with her decision. If Lucas wanted her as a mate, he was going to have to work for it.
Cara was in her happy place, the gym, midway into a decent run on the treadmill. Her phone buzzed in the holder, and her eyebrows shot up when she saw the Alpha’s number pop up on the screen in front of her.She immediately stepped on the edges away from the belt and hit pause on the treadmill, grinding it to a halt. She composed herself, not wanting to give away how nervous she actually was, and cleared her throat before answering.“Alpha Lucas,” she said cheerily. “How are you?”“I’m well, thank you Cara,” he replied in his deep baritone voice. She didn’t want to admit it, even to herself, but his voice alone stirred something in her.“What can I do for you?”
It wasn't a bad party, as far as these things go. The food was delicious, the music was pumping, and everyone was friendly and welcoming. They also seemed relaxed. It appeared that with the absence of the Alpha and Beta, the guests were prepared to let their hair down. Cara was mingling happily and was enjoying getting to know some of the new pack members. She had started the night wondering if she would have much in common with anyone, but was relieved to find they really were just werewolves like her, no better and no worse. She had agreed to a secret signal with Dane so that if she was in an awkward or uncomfortable situation, he could sweep in and get her out of it, but so far she hadn’t needed it. “Gamma Sam,” greeted Cara as he approached. “I’m Cara Nordstrom. Alpha Lucas was right, you do know how to throw a decent party.”
A packhouse tradesman stood balanced on a step ladder, using a drill to repair the hinges on the door to Alpha Lucas’ office. The man responsible for the damage sat on a couch in the foyer, waiting for a meeting with Lucas.“Dane, come in!” shouted Lucas over the sound of the power drill.“Sorry about the door,” apologised Dane. “Although, I guess it was a better option than your face,” he added with a shrug.“That’s one way of looking at it.”Lucas wanted nothing more than to get rid of the smug arsehole sitting in front of him, but he was trying to be civil with Dane and keep their relationship workable. Disciplining him and making him more of an enemy than he already was, would affect how Cara saw him. The la
The sun was beating down as the warriors ran with packs on from the centre of town to the marshall post, just as they had the day before. Dane was determined to break a few more of these guys today. When they arrived at the hut, exhausted, Dane allowed a five-minute reprieve. They dropped their packs, guzzled water, and attempted to settle their breathing and heart rates. After only two minutes had passed, Dane had yet another surprise for the warriors. “Time's up, everyone get ready to train,” he barked. With a collective groan, they made their way over to line up, except for one of the younger Green Plains warriors. He dragged his heels and complained about the lack of recovery time. Dane marched over to him, his face only inches away, and screamed at him as his face turned red with rage.
“Henrik!” shouted Cara, waving her arm to catch his attention. He crossed the road in a quick jog, giving her a one-armed hug and a peck on the cheek.“Sorry I’m late. Blame your boyfriend though, he works me too hard,” he apologised with a small laugh as he opened the cafe door.“I was running late myself. I thought I’d be the one having to apologise to you. I’ve been spending so much time traveling back and forth between home and the new pack.”They found a table and ordered lunch. Henrik and Dane were best friends, and Cara had grown close to him over the years too. He was level-headed and easygoing, as well as a superb listener. He was the perfect sounding board
Cara dialled the number that Henrik had given her, tapping her foot as it started to ring. She almost ended the call the moment she heard the sugary sweet voice answer, but focused on the task at hand.“Hi Lily, this is Cara. We uh - met - at the packhouse yesterday.”“I’m hanging up–”“No! Please don’t. I’m not looking to start a fight. I’m actually really embarrassed about my behaviour yesterday and I’d like to meet up to apologise in person. Can I buy you a coffee?”Lily paused on the other end of the phone, trying to determine Cara’s sincerity.“Fine. Todd’s Coffee House near the park in town. Give me half an hour and I’ll meet
The warriors trudged their way off the training ground, utterly exhausted. Dane stood with Henrik as they filed past, making note of how well the old Green Plains warriors were coming along.“They’d still be hopeless in a proper battle, but there’s progress there,” appraised Henrik.“They’re weeks ahead of where I thought they’d be. You’re doing a great job.”Henrik patted Dane on the back as they slowly started making their way towards the warrior building. “We’re doing a great job.”The last warrior to come off the field was Anna, a tough as nails she-wolf from Cape Point. Despite Dane’s protestations, Alpha Lucas was still reluctant to let the Green Plains women join the warrior ranks, but a
Cara broke free from Dane’s grip and stood in front of the pack. She ran through everything in her mind one last time. She wanted to be able to forgive Dane, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t live her life knowing what he’d done. She knew she was no better. She’d taken his mate’s life and he’d returned the favour. But she’d changed, she’d moved on, she wanted to be a better person. She couldn’t forgive him for trying to drag her back into the life she’d made a conscious choice to leave behind. “Thank you for the outpouring of love I’ve received from each and every one of you since Lucas’ passing. I appreciate the way you’ve kept me in your thoughts. Lucas isn’t gone, though. He lives on, through his pup – our pup – that is growing each day.” Murmurs spread through the cro
“Bring them to the packhouse. My office,” ordered Dane.“Yes, Alpha,” replied Wei.Dane stood and clenched his fists nervously. He wondered who the captive was and how much he knew. Cara rolled over, woken by his sudden movement, and saw the look on his face. He masked it quickly, but she knew something was amiss.“What is it?” she asked.“Nothing, it’s fine. I’ll handle it. Go back to sleep.”“Dane, I know when you’re hiding things.”He let out a sigh.“Ka
Dane stood on the front lawn of the packhouse, his bereaved packmates assembling to listen to his address as the acting Alpha of the Green Cape Pack. This should be an auspicious moment for him, but all he could think of was Cara’s distress. He’d done that to her.He quickly pushed it from his mind. This was how it had to happen. It would be painful for Cara in the short term, but long term, she would have the life she’d always dreamed of. With him.She would keep her place as Luna, and their child would still be the future Alpha. In his mind, he knew that he would treat them better than Lucas ever would have.“Green Cape Pack, it is with tremendous sadness that I confirm the passing of Alpha Lucas. Early this morning, a small group of for
Dane received Lucas’ SOS mind-link and waited patiently, biding his time. He wanted to give Matt and his men enough time to get the job done. When he was happy he’d given them a sufficient head start, he mind-linked Kasper and a group of his own warriors, and led them out to the running track where Lucas had said he was. They picked up his scent quickly when they reached the track and followed it, gaining speed.“I can’t scent anything or anyone other than the Alpha,” Kasper mind-linked to the group. “Anyone else getting anything?”“No,” came a chorus of replies. They kept running, Lucas’ sce
After shifting back and getting dressed in the forest, Dane didn’t want to waste a minute and jogged back to the packhouse with purpose. He found the contact details of the other packs and sent a message to Alpha Aiden, explaining that he had something important he needed to discuss with him and wanted to do it over video call. They arranged a time later that evening, and Dane and Stig spent the rest of the day on edge. Dane rapped his knuckles impatiently on the table as he joined the video chat. The wait seemed endless before the blank square finally came to life and Alpha Aiden’s face filled it. His backdrop was nondescript except for the ornate chair he was sitting on, which looked hard carved, and the top was intertwined with thorns from a rosebush.
Today was the day. Dane had a spring in his step, and not an ounce of nervousness over what was to take place. The price he had agreed with Ivan was expensive, but worth it in Dane’s eyes. Ivan had to be good, because he couldn’t have survived as a hitman for as long as he had if he wasn’t good at what he did. He’d paid a deposit out of his own funds, but would need to take out his share of the profits being held in the business account to pay for the rest once the job was done. It was a lot of money, but when he thought about what he was buying, it seemed like the best deal he’d ever made.Lucas would be gone, he would become Alpha and reign with Cara and their pup. Money well spent, indeed.
Lando hit the floor, covered in blood. He scrambled to his feet, panting and in pain, ready to take his last stand. Turning, he was shocked to see the wolf that attacked him lying in a pool of its own blood, with its head almost removed from its neck.Stig still had his paws gripped around the wolf, and his face was covered in the blood of Jannik’s wolf.“We’re fucking idiots,” Stig said to Dane. “That could have been it! We want Lucas dead, he could have been taken out without us needing to do anything… and we stopped it.”“Fuck! You didn’t even hesitate in going to save him, and neither did I.”“Instinct. It’s how we’re wired.&rdq
Dane tapped his foot impatiently as he waited for Lucas inside the warrior training hall. He yawned, thinking it was way too early on a Sunday morning to be doing this. Lucas had sent him a message the previous night saying he needed to meet with him. The hall would be undergoing renovations soon, but surely it didn’t warrant having to meet at this hour. With no training scheduled for the day, the place was deserted and the eerie silence in the hall was adding to the boredom. The loud click of the door echoed around the building as Lucas entered and made his way over. “About time,” grumbled Dane. “I didn’t know I had to be here right on the exact second,” snapped Lucas, glancing at his watch. Like Dane, he w
Cara knew it was going to be the hardest phone call that she’d ever had to make, but she thought it would be easier than telling him in person and having to look at those pleading eyes while doing it.“Dane, I’ve made my mind up. Regardless of who the father is, I’m going to raise it with Lucas.”She had known this from the moment she’d found out she was pregnant, but Dane had asked her to take her time and think about it. She hadn’t given it any more thought, but she took some time to make it appear that way.“But you can’t, that could be my kid, Cara!”“Lucas is good to me and he loves me–”
