THEON
I didn’t know how to feel or react. The only thing I was certain of was that betrayal had a taste, and I didn’t like it. It was bitter, metallic like blood and lingered even though hours had passed since I first tasted it.
I sat in my home office, staring at the countless articles written about Eleanor. Images and accusations lined every title, each one more vicious than the last. They were not taking it easy on her and somehow; I felt responsible.
Eleanor and I had met after an arranged blind date by our families, and I had to be truthful when I said I wasn't fond of her at first. I had met countless girls like her in my grandfather's effort to make sure I got a wife.
I didn't know how it happened. Maybe it was her persistence, but I became fond of her. I looked forward to every meeting. I wanted to be around her all the time. I wanted to touch her, spoil her.
Maybe I was not as open in my affection, but I tried. Did my lack of display push her to betray me? Was I so despicable that she had to cheat?
My jaw tightened when I came across the picture of her with the unknown man in a passionate embrace again. It didn’t matter how many times I saw the picture, the sting from the betrayal hit harder each time.
I had never been the type of man to dwell on emotions. I didn’t have the luxury. To me, emotions were a weakness, a liability I would never dare to have. My grandfather expected me to act and react in a manner that exudes power.
Another ping came in and I clicked the news without thinking twice, and what I saw had me sitting up fast.
DISOWNED AND DISGRACED: ELEANOR STERLING’S FALL FROM GRACE
My eyes glanced through the article. Her parents had disowned her, claiming they wanted nothing to do with a despicable person.
My jaw clenched, and my fingers curled into fists. How could they have discarded her as though she were a faulty item? Wasn't she their only child?
Maybe I should have felt pleased or relieved that she was suffering after what she did to me, but I couldn’t. I was angry at her parents for not trying to protect her amid this chaos.
My door opened and my best friend, Julian Montgomery, strolled in with a knowing look on his face as he dumped his body on the couch.
“Still torturing yourself even though you were the one who called off the wedding?” Julian’s voice carried its regular hint of amusement, but something edgy beneath it.
“I’m not torturing myself,” I answered with a frown and exited the article before switching off my phone, turning it upside down on the table and fixing my attention on him.
Julian leaned forward with a smirk. “Could have fooled me. You've been glued to your phone screen since you abandoned her last night."
“That’s not true”
It was. I had read every single article that had been released, hoping for ...
“Are you hoping you found a news story that says otherwise? One that proves her innocence?”
My fingers curled under my table. I had already sent the photos to be examined, searching for any sign of fabrication or evidence that she had been falsely accused, but the examination yielded nothing. They were real.
I also had someone hack into her email, hoping that it was also a lie. The hacker had found the emails that were deleted as soon as they were sent, and they were all from her account. She had betrayed me.
“She is guilty,” I told him coldly, “There is nothing to linger for”
Julian scoffed. He stood up and sat on the edge of my table "Then why does it sound like that hurts you?”
“Not hurt,” I snapped, lying to myself, “She was my fiancée, so I'm allowed to feel some emotions towards this whole thing. It doesn’t mean I feel bad for her”
Julian chuckled “You can’t even hide it" He poured himself a bottle of scotch on my table "Look man, I never liked that girl, and you know it. I felt something weird about her and I told you before, but you didn’t listen”
“Have you ever liked anyone?” I scoffed, pointing an accusing glare towards him, which he laughed off.
“But this time I was right,” He pointed out "She was only using you. Probably from the beginning. You’ve got to admit that you dodged a bullet with this one.”
I remained silent, my fingers tapping quietly on the desk. I knew all of this. I was the one who ended what we had.
“Tell me you don’t feel bad for her because she is getting what she deserves?”
I didn’t answer, and it made him laugh "You loved her more than you showed, right?”
I scoffed, trying to get him to drop it "That’s not it”
“Yes, it is,” he pointed to my phone "If it was someone else, you would have moved on but this time, you can’t. You are sitting here, unable to get a single work done because you are brooding like a man who’d just lost his wife”
“She wasn’t my wife”
“And thank God for that. Imagine how much damage she would have done if she had been in the family? She would have more information than what she sold, and it would have done more damage”
The door swung open again, and I resisted the urge to groan. The people in this house needed to learn how to knock, especially my stepmother, who was the last person on this earth I wanted to see.
I watched as she stepped into the office with that perfectly sculpted composure she always wore when we were in a room together.
I never liked Victoria, but I tolerated her. My father had married her when I was younger, I think I had been 15 but he died three years later.
Victoria didn’t give birth to a child for my father, but she never left the estate after Father died and my grandfather didn’t bother chasing her away. He thought she was harmless, but I knew better.
She was a vulture that was circling the empire like it was a dead carcass, waiting for what she could sink her claws into. It was bad enough that she was on the board, courtesy of the shares my grandfather gave her, but I knew she was greedy for more.
“Theon,” she said with a crafted smile "I guess you’ve seen the news about what happened to that snake”
I didn’t respond as she took a seat beside Julian, opposite me. The smile on her face was cold as she continued.
“The Sterling did the right thing getting rid of that one. A person like that would only continue to ruin those around her”
A flicker of irritation appeared on her face "How does abandoning one’s child become a good thing? Are you like this because you have no children?”
Her smile faltered and I have to give it to her that she didn’t flinch or get mad "You are funny. Having children or not has nothing to do with this. And aren’t you glad I don’t have any, they would be fighting to take the group from you?”
“I’m sure you are doing enough on their behalf,” I countered and this time her eyes widened a fraction. Almost unnoticeable, but I caught it, and I smirked.
I didn’t have any solid proof that Victoria was making moves to take the Group, but I had my suspicions, and her reactions just confirmed it. I would have to get my people to look into whatever she may be planning.
“I’m not here to fight, Theon. I just want to congratulate you because you manage to avoid marrying someone that would have ruined you”
Julian nodded in agreement "She is right, man. You dodged a bullet. You should be celebrating”
“Now, all you need to do is focus on the company. Even though you did nothing wrong, the company still managed to take a few hits”
I studied her carefully "Is that why you are here? To remind me of my responsibilities?”
“I know how fond you were of this one, so I just wanted to make sure your sentiments haven’t clouded your vision and if they have, I can take over for a while until you recover”
“The world would burn before I ask you for help, Victoria. If that is all, please leave,” I told her with the firmest tone I could muster.
She smiled "I was just offering my help, you don’t have to be so mean” She got up and left.
“Why are you always so harsh towards her?” Julian asked "She was right, you know? You took this too personal”
I remained silent, irritation building up with each word he spoke, but I didn’t want to argue more about this.
Julian stood, maybe sensing that my mood had turned sour "Look, man. You are the Theon Blackwell. This is just a minor inconvenience that would pass”
After he left, I let out a tense exhale.
I had done the right thing. She cheated and sold some company trade secret, but why did it feel like I made a bad decision?
ELEANORFIVE YEARS LATERI lingered and I hated that I did. I was not supposed to, but I guess this was a big moment. It was something I had carefully crafted for years, and it was time for it to happen.“Don’t hesitate, Eleanor. They won’t recognize you anyway” I muttered to myself and took a deep breath.I held on to my limited edition pursed and stepped into the room. The moment I stepped in through the oversized double doors of the grand ballroom where the event was happening, the air became electric, and the attention shifted to me.The room that had been loud with chatter, laughter and excitement became quiet as all eyes turned to me.Yes. I wanted to scream out loud while wearing a proud grin, but I couldn’t. The image I wore wouldn’t permit me to act so foolishly like a child.Everyone’s attention was drawn to me immediately. Their eyes held more than mere curiosity. I could taste the awe, the intrigue and the envy and God, did it taste and feel amazing.I was back.I could s
THEON I had always dreaded walking the hallways to my grandfather’s study. There was something unnerving with how he always liked to keep the hall dark, making it feel like it was looming with something evil hanging on every corner. Today, however, that looming feeling was more intensified than ever. My Grandfather had passed away last week. The hallway was cold and empty. The lanterns that lit up the hallway were replaced with bulbs, signifying his absence since he would have never let it happen. The house was still in mourning. The mourning flowers still lined the hall and the curtains had all been replaced with black. I opposed it but Victoria had won claiming it was a family tradition that the flowers and curtains be brought out as though the house wasn’t brooding enough. With my grandfather gone, the Blackwell Group would fully be mine. I wouldn’t dare to say I had waited for this moment since it would be as though I had been secretly wishing he was dead since that w
ELEANOR I stood in front of the ceiling-to-floor window in the new penthouse I had just acquired and watched the city below. I couldn’t see anyone as the building was too far up, but I pretended that Isla, my parents, and Theon were below, watching me as I stood above them. I had just started, but I wanted to be cocky because I could taste my victory at the tip of my tongue. I knew it wouldn’t take time for me to put them all where they belonged. They would all regret betraying me. I would make sure of it. A faint chime broke my thoughts, and I turned my attention to my phone on the coffee table with its light on. I walked towards the table and picked up my phone to read the message. A grin broke out on my face as soon as I read it. One of the people I had in Theon’s company had an update for me, and it was one that would make my revenge a lot easier. Theon needed a wife within the next three months, as stated in his grandfather’s will, and I suddenly had a brilliant idea. “
ELEANOR If it was still the old Eleanor, she may have panicked and begun scrambling for the next plan to make sure what she wanted happened, but not Elle. Gone were the times when I was on the losing side. Now, I was the one controlling the game. Ever since I changed, I always looked at myself in the mirror to remind myself that I wasn’t Eleanor anymore. I reminded myself of what I had to go through in order to get here so I wouldn’t get distracted and forget what brought me back. “Eleanor is dead, Elle,” I whispered to myself as I pulled the robes around me tighter “You are different now and have so many things she lacked. You are untouchable now” Sophie entered my bedroom with a cup of tea, since she hated it when I took coffee in the morning. She had that familiar look of quiet adoration on her face and even though I’ve asked her to stop looking at me like that, she wouldn’t. “You are standing in the mirror again, Ellie. What are you overthinking this time?” She asked with
ELEANOR I lingered at the entrance to study Reginald Blackwell. Just like his nephew, he had a stagnant cold expression on his face. He was dressed in a clean three-piece suit, his black hair slicked back, and his expression was coy. The universe must be on my side because they didn’t even wait for me to come before putting Theon in the lion’s den. After all, that was what his uncles were. I was back at the hotel but this time, instead of the lounge where I had met Theon the day before, I had been escorted to a private waiting area where Reginald wanted the meeting to happen discreetly. While Blackwell had the distinctive features all Blackwells had, he lacked the quiet, dangerous air of authority that Theon could give easily which made people tremble at his presence. Reginald was also greedy, entitled, lazy and worst of all, careless. He was going to be easy to deal with. I took my time crossing the room to the table where he sat with his back to me. My heels clicked
ELEANOR More than the introduction at the gala, I think this was it. It was finally the starting point of my revenge, and it felt so good that I couldn’t put it into words. Unlike the meeting with his uncle earlier, I had decided on something more provocative. Something that demanded attention, that would keep his eyes on me the entire night, unable to look aware while he hated every minute of giving into my schemes. The white dress was body fitting, clinging to me like a second skin with its high slit teasing skin with every step I took. The plunging neckline was cut dangerously low, and the straps were the only thing holding onto the material and preventing a slip. Theon’s eyes watched me from the moment I stepped through the doors of the privately booked restaurant. What a showoff. He watched me with a dark and empty gaze as each step with a sensual sway of my hips brought me closer to him. “I didn’t expect you to call so soon. What was the rush?” I teased smugly a
ELEANOR The car drove into the Blackwell’s estate, and I sighed. I hadn’t even gotten married to Theon yet, but I was already tired of the amount of people who were demanding to see me. The Blackwell Estate stood like a fortress in the night. The large, iron gates were intimidating under the moonlight, and the massive Blackwell crest even made it more fearsome. Memories of how I would dream of the day when I finally moved in here with Theon to start our future together haunted me as the car made its way inside the compound and towards the main house. This time was different, I wasn’t here because I loved Theon and wanted to spend the rest of my life looking at him with lovesick eyes. Victoria Blackwell had invited me for dinner. I was so overseeing the Blackwells every single day. It wasn’t even a week yet and I’d already met Reginald and now, Victoria. They were not willing to give me a break. I wasn’t stupid enough to think Victoria invited me out of courtesy so she
ELEANORAfter dinner, the maids cleared the table but the atmosphere was still tense but I didn’t mind. I loved tense places. I thrived better in them.“Theon, there is something I have to discuss with you. It has to do with those new deals” Julian spoke up.“Let’s go to my office then,” Theon answered, getting up.He turned to me “Excuse us” He said and left with Julian. I pondered if I should just go home or wait for him since I didn’t have anything else to do or say to anyone. Victoria had gotten a feel of her opponent and she had been quiet since. I didn’t believe she was done, I just knew she was cooking something in that sly head of hers but maybe it was for later. However, as soon as I heard a door opened and closed in the distance suggesting that Theon and Julian had entered his office, the atmosphere changed again as Victoria cleared her throat. She took her glass of wine and sipped it slowly and I could feel her gaze at the side of my head so I turned to meet her gaze.Ma
ELEANOR “I bet you are going to steal the attention at the show,” Sophie gushed as she slid the zipper of the dress down and took a step back to admire me. Like all the others I had worn in the last few months since I'd been back, the dress was body-fitted but I barely felt it. It wasn’t because it wasn’t tight, but because my mind was elsewhere, scheming. I knew tonight was going to be tough. Everywhere with Theon was like that. Filled with people underestimating me and what I could do while trying to bully me. They never learn. Theon wouldn’t give me details of the function, so I had no idea who was going to be present there and Jeremy was busy with a school project, so I didn’t want to have him hacking into Theon’s secretary to find details. And I didn't trust any other person enough to let them do the work as well. “You don’t have to worry that you are going in blind today. One thing I’m certain of is that regardless of who would be present, every woman in that room wi
ELEANORMy eyes met Sophie who stood by the door with her hands folded across her chest. I jerked my head towards Jeremy who had been silent since he plopped his tiny ass on the couch in my office.“What’s wrong with him?” I mouthed while subtly pointing at him. “I don’t know” She mouthed back and shrugged. Jeremy laid across the couch with his brows furrowed while twirling a pen between his fingers as he stared at the ceiling, lost in his thoughts.“Penny for your thoughts?” I asked and he glanced at me.“What?” He asked, having not heard my previous question.“You’ve been quiet since you came in which is unusual for your loud ass so something’s up. What is it?”He sighed and sat up with a grimace “You are not going to like this”I got serious, closing the opened file on my table and pushing it aside as I gave him my full attention. “Out with it”“Victoria is digging into Eleanor Sterling” “What?” I froze in shock “How deep?”Jeremy shrugged, frustrated “I don’t know but one of th
ELEANOR “Are you ready?” Theon asked, meeting me in the living area of our suite. He hadn’t been happy since my decision to stay alone, but that was his problem. “Yes. Let’s go” Sophie handed me my purse, and we left. Today, Theon was going to formally introduce me to the Board as his wife and a new addition to the Group. If Theon had his way, I wouldn’t have anything to do with the group, but he had no choice. Every Blackwell had to contribute to the success of the empire, and I was no exception. I wouldn't be given any official position since I had my investment firm to run, but I could contribute and make minor decisions during meetings as his wife and a member of the board. Theon sat quietly across from me in the car as we rode to the corporation headquarters. His head was buried in his phone as he typed furiously with a frown on his face. “You have to be careful during the meeting,” he finally said, breaking the silence as he lifted his head to look at me “The board is
ELEANOR The wedding was finally over, and I couldn’t be more relieved. I had spent hours greeting and thanking the guests who had taken time out of their precious busy schedules to attend a wedding they literally salivated over. Currently, my attention was on Victoria as she conversed with the first lady, smiling as though she had won the lottery. “Elle darling, come here and greet the first lady” I blinked twice to check if it was indeed Victoria who was talking to me. Her smile was so wide, it was almost creepy and the pride on her face as she gestured me over had got the be the fakest genuine expression she had seen. I needed her to sign me up for her acting class. All A-list actors and actresses on the big screen must have had the acting coach who taught her as their teacher. I searched for Theon, and he was busy with the president himself, so I had no choice. Sophie had taken Jeremy back home on my orders. I didn’t want him to stay long enough for people to start asking
ELEANOR Today was the wedding. It was my first wedding, but I felt nothing as I stood in front of the mirror. The wedding was everything I had ever dreamt of what my wedding would be. The wedding gown Theon had gotten for me on his insistence was even better than the first one I was supposed to wear five years ago. My eyes were cold as I met them in the mirror. I felt no trace of joy, flutters of excitement or anticipation that I would have if I were Eleanor. Because this wasn’t a fairytale. This was war, and I was about to step onto the battlefield. I reminded myself silently. “At least try to smile. You look like you’re being held hostage,” Jeremy muttered behind me, and I looked through the mirror at him. I wanted to keep Jeremy hidden, but he had insisted on giving me away today. When I told him that Theon was suspicious of my identity, he suggested that showing him as my brother would squash Theon’s suspicions, since Eleanor was an only child. “I can’t. It’s not like it's
ELEANORIf I had my way, I wouldn’t be here but Jeremy called me and said Victoria had instigated some gullible women to bully me whenever they saw me.It was such a childish move considering the kind of person I knew she was. Was her urgency to get me out of the way making her run out of options?Anyway, I told Sophie I was going to come to the small gathering of socialites so I could give the women in her circle the opportunity to play bully. Immediately I entered the room, the conversation halted and instead, murmurs rose as they eyed me while they judged. Like I said earlier, children. I smiled, unbothered by their veiled disdain and envy and walked to the middle of the room where I had Sophie book me a table at the function. The person I had bet my money would be the first to speak approached me and took a seat beside me.Marjorie Sinclair, wife of Nathan Sinclair, a powerful man with an even bigger shipping company but not bigger than the Blackwells. She was dressed to perfec
AUTHOR’S POVThe next morning, the world woke up to the announcement of the engagement between Elle Davenport and Theon Blackwell. Every major news outlet, social media blogs, and gossip pages had the news on their front page. They were all going into a frenzy. Comments sections were flooded with the same set of questions.Who was Elle Davenport?Where did she come from? How did she appear from nowhere and get engaged to Theon in less than a month?Nobody knew anything about her. Even the influencers who were popular for knowing everything about elites had no idea about her past or where she came from. Victoria Blackwell threw her tablet across the room. The object hit the wall with a loud clash and hit the floor. The screen turned black immediately but it did nothing to soothe the rage she felt. “That snake” she hissed with barely concealed fury “She managed to get her way after all. How dare Theon not listen to me?”Her assistant, Lara stood stiffly with wide eyes and tremblin
