Genevieve. I try my best not to think about her or how I failed her, how I broke the promise I made to her father. That was the only thing Anthony Franklin had ever asked me for, to keep his daughter safe and I couldn’t even do that. Anthony Franklin and his wife Rita, were the only ones in this pack who ever saw anything good in me. They took care of me, taught me and showed me kindness where no one ever did. To the pack I was the dirty, homeless boy with anger issues and weird green eyes but to the Franklin’s, I was a child in need of a home, a home they gave me freely. I vowed never to let them down, never to let them regret taking me in but in the end, I broke my vow, I let them down. As I walk through the run down home of the only person to ever take care of me, I don’t see the walls blackened by the fires set to the home by the angry pack, I don’t see the broken bottles or the furniture, I don’t see the vulgar words written by the angry pack members, I see the small home where
The day before Genevieve’s parent’s deaths… I paced from one end of the room to the other while Derek leaned on his desk with his arms folded, watching me. “You’ll walk a hole in the floor Asher.” I stopped pacing and turned to face him, “I don’t get it, how could their fingerprints be on the murder weapon? There weren’t even here when the murders took place. Anthony Franklin is the least violent man I know and his wife –there’s no way she can kill anyone either. They were framed, that’s the only explanation that makes sense.” Derek gives me a look that sends alarm bells ringing in my head. “What is it now?” With a sigh, he says, “The other servants in the Campbell house confirmed that Gus Campbell only allowed Anthony to touch his weapons. They were very dear to him and because Anthony had a lot of knowledge about weapons, he was the only one with access to the vault. Only Anthony could have gotten his hands on the silver dagger that was used to murder the Campbells.” Everything
Derek was someone I always considered as my brother. Besides the Franklin’s, he was the only other person to be nice to me. When he and I bonded as alpha and beta, we became even closer than biological brothers. We fought together, we ruled the pack together and we swore that nothing will ever come between us because that would mean the weakening of the alpha-beta bond which will also affect the pack. Derek and I had never fought each other but we always fought together. I always thought he was someone I would never raise my fist to –ever. Till today. As I tackle Derek to the ground, I keep punching him. I’m able to get a couple of blows in before he pushes me off of him. His eyes glow amber, the color of his wolf Rex while mine glow green in the left eye and silver in the right, the color of Raven’s eyes. Just as we begin to go to each other, Liana steps between us and screams for us to stop. “How could you do this? She trusted you!” I say to Liana before turning to Derek “I truste
I look away from Asher as the cheers die down and everyone takes their seats. Derek steps forward and addresses the crowd “We thank the goddess for her blessings upon the pack this new year. The council met today and we have decided that the pack needs a bigger home for the alpha. The new house will be built to accommodate guests from other packs and even some workers under the employ of the alpha and the luna. The old house will be given to the beta and will become his personal residence.” “Why does the alpha and luna need a new house?” I ask Hope. “The current residence of the alpha and luna is a little bit old and kind of small for the alpha, luna and beta to stay in comfortably especially when there are guests from other packs.” I nod. From the expression on Beta Asher’s face, he doesn’t seem to care about it or want to be here for that matter. “The floor will be thrown open to every member of the pack for your opinion on where the new house will be. Let us here your suggestions
That night, I lay in bed and thinking about what Derek had said about destroying my old house. It didn’t help that I was doing nothing but suppressing my anger and scaring Liana with words, those things were not enough. I had to start my revenge immediately. I stood up from the bed and grabbed a notepad and a pencil before sitting on my desk. The first thing I needed to do was find the receipt that could prove my parents weren’t here when the Campbells got murdered so I needed to think of places where the receipt could be. I didn’t have much hope that I would find it because a lot of time had passed. On the notepad, I write down a list of places where I think the receipt could be. My old home, the Campbells home, those are the only places I can think of right now. I circle ‘my old home’ and decide to start my search there. The next day, I go to Liana’s home. She seems to still be annoyed by the stunt I pulled yesterday and sends me to the kitchen to help the cooks. At the kitchen,
This was the second time I’ve run into those green eyes and just like last time, they have the same effect on me. I can’t feel Ida anymore and I feel so nervous. I watch as Asher’s eyes go from my head and drag down the entire length of my body, my entire body feels hot. I hide the maid’s uniform I carried out in my jacket and move closer to him. “Beta Asher, good evening.” When he says nothing, I smile and move to walk past him but he blocks my path. “What are you doing here and by this time?” it’s a feeling I can’t explain, but his deep voice fills every part of my body with warmth. What the hell? “Beta, I couldn’t sleep so I decided to take a stroll.” His eyebrows lift in disbelief. “You’re quite far from your home aren’t you, Alexa?” He remembers my name? In the dark house, with the light from outside shining partially on his face, he looks as surprised as me that he remembered my name. “I’m far from home because I’ve been walking for a while. You didn’t let me finish exploring t
The first thing on my mind when I wake up is I absolutely cannot let Derek destroy my home. But how was I supposed to stop him alone? I didn’t have much time to plan anything and I wasn’t sure I would get any opportunity with Asher watching me so closely. Speaking of which, I had to do something about the beta suddenly showing up in places I didn’t expect. I stood off in a corner in the kitchen of the alpha/luna residence trying to come up with ways to disrupt the plan to destroy my home when the maid I served the elders with came up to me. “The cook wants to see you.” I followed the maid to an unsmiling woman with frown lines on her face. “You wanted to see me?” “You had one job yesterday. Just pour the drinks for the elders and remain unseen, was that so hard to do?” “Doesn’t that count as two jobs?” I say sweetly. The cook’s face turns a deep shade of red and she takes a step towards me. “Get out of my kitchen, I don’t ever want to see you here!” she screams. I’m about to leave wh
I turn around to see what the old man is talking about but once again, I find nobody behind me. “Where…” I begin to ask the man but when I turn back around, he’s no where to be found. I am alone. What the… “I knew he was no ordinary person.” Ida says. “What does that mean for us though?” “We’ll see.” “Was what he said true? Is the bracelet hurting you?” “I can handle it.” “Ida!” “If it got too much, I was going to tell you. This is a partnership, Alexa; I won’t keep anything from you.” I trust my wolf. Everything I’ve ever experienced; she’s also experienced with me. I would have given up if she wasn’t with me and so for Ida, I am eternally grateful to the moon goddess. “You’ll get your chance to breathe some soon Ida, I promise.” I hear Ida growl her agreement. Now where was I going to get Liana’s herbs from? “Are you the Luna’s maid?” A patrol guard asks me. “Yes?” “There’s a package for the Luna.” “Ah, yes, she sent me to get that.” The guard hands me a sealed box and leaves whil
“They summoned you without an investigation? Isn’t that against the rules?” Hope screams out. “Shh, someone could hear you.” I say. “But this!” she holds out the summons letter and shakes it. “The Luna saw what she saw, I guess the elders took her word for it.” “Oh please, everyone knows the Luna has a problem with you.” “True, but she wasn’t the only witness.” Hope collapses on the sofa and sighs, finally out of complaints. “How are you so chill about this?” She asks me and I shrug. That morning, I had shown Hope and Jessa the letter then explained what had really happened and they were trying to come up with ways I could defend myself but I knew that with Liana involved, nothing I said would let me off the hook. The hearing was to take place by two in the afternoon and it was already thirty minutes past one. I was dressed in a simple dark blue gown with sandals and I had my hair down. Jessa had picked my outfit because according to her, the simpler and smaller I looked, the more the
I turn and face Derek who is sprawled on the chair, looking so sure of himself even when he’s delusional on drugs. His eyes are glassy and look unfocused but his words sound so true, even when they come out slurred. “You aren’t in your right mind, do you mean that?” Without flinching and with no hesitation, he replies, “I stand by every word I said.” Even though I knew it, his confirmation surprises me still and shockingly hurts me. I let out a small laugh. “Drunken words are really sober thoughts, huh?” “What do you mean?” “Did you ever feel something for… her?” “Never, you’re the only one I want, the only one I ever wanted.” But she doesn’t feel that way, I think to myself.Derek rises from the chair and staggers to where I stand at the window. “Are you feeling jealous because she was my mate?” When I don’t answer, he takes both my hands in his. “No doubt, you are the only woman I’ve ever loved.” A wave of nausea washes over me so I yank my hands from his and cover my mouth with the
An alpha was blessed with an aura that made him powerful and the symbol of strength to the pack. Alphas always had a strength that set them apart from an ordinary werewolf, and made them an obvious leader. An alpha had the same abilities that werewolves had but they could it ten times, even hundred times better. They were just that unique. I couldn’t imagine what would make an alpha to lose that kind of strength and make him as weak as an omega –maybe even weaker. A weak alpha had dire consequences for a pack. It meant that there wasn’t a strong entity protecting them anymore. It could also mean that a beta could try to overthrow the alpha and become the new alpha himself, and some of these power struggle fights could lead to war and end up bloody. On the bright side, Asher doesn’t seem like the type of beta who coveted power, but still, there was no way a weak alpha meant anything good for the pack. “Alexa!” Liana’s voice brings me out of my thoughts and back into reality. “What?”
“What do you mean his aura is gone?” I ask Ida. I’m not sure where the panic is coming from but it feels strange to see such a powerful alpha wolf like this and Ida’s observation certainly doesn’t help. “It’s just like I felt with Liana, there’s something different about Derek as well.” I shake Derek with all of my might but he doesn’t wake up, he doesn’t even stir. “I need help.” I rush out of the hallway and spot some elders in the distance. I’m about to call for help when a thought hits me. Derek wouldn’t want them to see him this way, weak and powerless, it was going to make them disrespect him. Who could Derek trust to help him when he was like this? Asher. The answer is clear and simple. Even though I could sense some tensions between them lately, Asher would always fulfill his duty to help his alpha and longtime friend, putting all issues between them aside. I rush to the balcony, hoping that no one will come into the dim-lighted hallway and see the unconscious alpha yet and p
Liana’s hands ball the letter into her fists, she grabs the coffee mug on her desk and hurls it across the room then lets out a scream of pure rage. The door opens and Ally with some guard-wolves rush into the room. “What’s wrong, Luna?” Ally asks. Everything, I say to myself. Liana throwing her mug across the room, has put me in the war zone of her rage. Glass shards pierce my arm and hot coffee splashes on my leg. I left Ally to calm the angry Luna down and went to treat my injuries. At least I knew I hadn’t misunderstood what I had seen, Liana was cheating on Derek. How long had it been going on? From the way they talked, it looked like they had known each other for a while, probably before she got mated to Derek and married him. Many parts of their conversation also didn’t make any sense to me. What had her lover meant by, they will be together soon? Weren’t they already together? The whole thing was confusing to me but I could think about that later. By the time noon had roll
I’m not sure why I run away from the tunnel but my instincts tell me it was the right thing to do in that moment, so I ran. In the back of my mind, I realize that I just missed the best chance I had to see who Liana’s lover was but I remember the feeling I got back in the tunnel. The mystery man had suddenly turned and looked directly at me, it felt like he could see me peeking at them from the peephole. That was unlikely but, in that moment, I was so sure he had seen me behind the secret wall. Once I make it outside the residence of the alpha/luna, I take the time to catch my breath and collect my thoughts. I had just gotten more ammunition to use against Liana. Not only had she lost her position and powers as the oracle of the moon goddess, she was also cheating on Derek -her supposed mate. Cheating on your mate was one of the most painful things that could ever happen to the other mate, I still remember how I felt when Derek left me for Liana . Sometimes, it left the cheated mate
The next day, Liana looks like a new person and not the ill-behaved cat she was yesterday. Her face has a rosy glow to it and she has the look of a woman well satisfied (or at least I think she is satisfied. I don’t know how a satisfied woman looks like.) “Luna, you look well rested today.” Ally says with heart signs in her eyes. “Oh, I certainly feel much better today, thank you Ally.” Liana looks at me, like she’s expecting me to comment on the glow around her. “Luna.” I say with a half-hearted nod. Her smile falters a little bit but comes back, even brighter and wider than before. “You seem to be in a foul mood, Alexa. I hope your day gets better.” Oh, I know it will, I say to myself. Liana opens her door and falters when she sees the white envelope on her office floor, like it had been slipped in from the small slit under the door. Her smile dims a little bit, and it disappears completely when she sees that the ‘addressed to’ part of the envelope has ‘Oracle of the moon goddess?
“Who’s Ida?” Asher asks, effectively stopping me from running away from these confusing feelings. “Ida?” I say, turning to face him slowly with a fake ‘I’m confused’ expression on my face. “You mentioned the name quite a lot while you were asleep.” Asher says carefully, watching me with those sharp eyes of his, I needed be careful. “Oh Ida, she’s an old friend of mine.” I don’t remember ever telling Asher the name of my wolf when I was Genevieve, so I hope I’m right and lie. “Any particular reason why you kept on calling for her in your sleep?” he asks, not bothering to hide his curious stare. My mind flashes to the weird dream I had, those creepy red eyes in the darkness and the feel of those hands holding me down, swarming up all over my body. I shiver when I remember the laugh of the mysterious person, ‘it’ had called me Genevieve. “I have been away from home for a while, I guess I just miss her. She’s my closest friend.” Asher is about to say something more but I don’t think I h
“Alexa? Are you okay? You look kind of pale. Do you want to sit down?” Hope grabs my hand and I am grateful for the contact. My throat feels like its closing and my breaths come in short pants. I suddenly feel lightheaded. “Alexa!” Hope’s voice sounds like she’s screaming my name from underwater. “Hope, I can’t breathe!” I’m not sure if I get those words out but I know for a fact that I look at her with desperation and panic in my eyes. From the fog around me, I can feel Ida’s panic rising as she growls and growls, trying to reach me, but everything sounds like it is coming from far away and I am alone where I am, not even my wolf is with me. I close my eyes and count to ten in my head but when I open them, I find myself in a dark forest. All I can see are trees all around me. I catch a glimpse of red eyes in the dark but when I look again, they are gone. “Ida? Ida, can you hear me?” I call to my wolf but all I hear is silence. “Ida, please.” I am crying now, the tears flow freely fr
