ANNA

THERE WAS SILENCE on the other end of the call, only the sound of Mitch's breathing.

"Do you really think so?" He asked me.

I nodded but remembered that he could not see me. "Yes. You should meet this alpha and see how he treats his pack members. Even his Luna."

"So a shitty alpha has potentially put all of the werewolf race at risk," He muttered.

"That sounds about right, yes." I agreed.

"Has he treated you badly in any way?"

I could hear the guttural rumble of his beast shadowing his voice. I was not out to start a war, so I shook my head and said, "No, they have been very kind."

He scoffed. "I think you are lying, but I will take your word for it."

"Dad. Can we get another ice cream?" I heard Addison ask.

"You know ice cream is bad for the health and teeth," I said to Mitch. "I don't want you feeding my children with processed fat."

He grunted and said to Addison, "Yes we can." Then he hung up the call. I groaned in frustration. This man was going to spoil my children. I turn

MITCHAFTER THE CALL with Anna, he herded the children to the car and drove back to the kingdom. The ride back home was strangely quiet. He glanced at them and saw that they were buying themselves by staring at the roadside. He stopped the car at the entrance of the kingdom and came out with the children. "Park the car in the garage," He told a guard standing nearby. The guard saluted and got into the car while Mitch strolled along with the children by his side."Why are we walking, Dad?" Aiden asked."I need you to exercise off the sugar you just consumed," He answered.Addison slipped her hand out of his and bolted ahead. Mitch chuckled as he watched her jump in the air freely. "Don't you want to join your sister?" He asked Aiden, who still walked calmly by his side.Aiden shook his head. "I don't want to get dirty." He said looking as his sister rolled in the snow.Mitch cocked his head. The words of his son never failed to surprise him. Which kid doesn't want to run in the snow?

MITCH"DAD, WHY DO we have snow all the time?" Addison asked. She has crouched on the floor ahead of them, running her fingers through the snow. Her mother would have chided her, but Anna wasn't here so Mitch didn't say anything about it. "Don't you like the snow?" He asked. She stood up and came towards them. "I like it," she said, holding Mitch's hand. "I'm just wondering. Our teacher at school taught us there were four seasons. But here, it seems like we are always in winter."Mitch chuckled and made a mental note to increase the salaries of the teachers in his kingdom school because they were doing a good job."It's because we are in the mountains," Aiden answered."Is that true?" Addison asked, looking up at Mitch who nodded."We are at a higher altitude than the normal people," He replied."Alt-tit-tude..." she mulled over the heavy word in her mouth. "So the closer we are to the sky, the more snow we get?""Hmm. That's one way to see it." He said. They walked to the palace. Dra

ANNAAFTER SITTING IN the hospital for hours, I decided to take a stroll to clear my head and prepare myself for the next thing we had to do. It was not going to be easy, but I was ready to do whatever it took to cure this plague.I hung my lab coat on a rack as I walked out. The sun was high and bright. I closed my eyes and raised my head to soak it up.As I walked leisurely, I allowed myself to take in and appreciate the natural beauty around me. This pack was a small one, but it was surrounded by nature. All evergreen trees, and exotic wildlife, and I could even hear the low trickle of a stream in the distance. It was nothing like the mountain Alps. Definitely not.I headed towards the direction of the stream and after a few minutes, I came out on the river bank. The stream was clear and flowed easily. I walked along with the current. What would my children be doing now? I wondered."What

ANNAWE REMAINED IN silence for a while, I could still feel the tension and worry in his body. As a Luna by Bloodline that I am, I could feel empathy and pick up minute body language from any wolf - things that a regular wolf would not see or feel.I saw the tiny tremors in his hand as he raised his hand from the stream. I could scent the hormones caused by fear and uncertainty in his body. Even though I had given him a little hope, he was still scared for his daughter.I sighed and decided to tell him what I suspected, but I had to break it to him in a gentle way. I leaned forward and dipped my hand into the stream, "Isn't this the stream where the first patient fell sick?" I asked. He looked at me dumbly. "Wha?""I was told that the first person fell sick after she played in this stream," I raised my eyebrows. "Or is that not so?"He chuckled and shook his head. "No, ma'am." He chuckled even more. "Not at all. We believe this stream to signify purity and even has magical qualities b

MITCH"WHAT DO YOU mean she's not here?" His mother asked. "I don't know much about your kind, but I know that the wife of the leader - or do you say 'alpha' - must always stay with him.""I'm an alpha, Mom," he said in a low tone. "Aiden, Addison... Go with Gran Jean. She'll wash you up and prepare your lunch." He nodded at a lady standing at the corner to take the kids away. When they were alone, Mitch looked at his mother. "The last time I spoke with you, you said the cold air of these mountains affects your bones."She scoffed and nodded. "It does.""So can I ask why you're here?" He sighed."Because you didn't want to come see me," she replied. "Have you been dodging my calls, Mitchell?" Her eyes were reduced to slits. He shook his head. "No mother. I have not. I have just been very busy... with the kids and the kingdom...""Yes. Now, tell me about the kids," She said. "I hope you didn't knock up any human lady like your father did with me."Mitch scoffed. ANNAI CHUCKLED AS I ended the call and put the phone in my bag.I could not explain the sudden flare of emotion that filled me when she answered. For a second, I thought he was with one of his mistresses. Even though he had not been with one in years, I still could not trust him completely. "That was jealousy," Ava said smugly in my head. "You were jealous."I frowned slightly. Jealous, I scoffed. But that moment of clarity had spurned a type of feeling for him. I could not yet put a tag on what it was... I sighed and decided not to think of it any longer. His mother sounded nothing like him. I had not even known he had a mother. How absurd did that sound? The thought made me chuckle again. It sounded like she had met my kids, and she loved them. She referred to me as Mitch's wife, and I didn't disagree or correct her that we were "chosen" mates.Only humans used that word. Was she human? Was Mitch the spawn of a Lycan and a human? And did she know that the children were not rea

AS SOON AS the doctor was bundled into the truck, the men got in and they sped away before the warriors of this pack arrived at the scene."Where are we headed to, Beta Jones?" the man in the driver's seat asked as their car bounced along the rough road."Where else?" The first man that had stepped out in front of Anna snarled. "Take us back home." He turned to look at the unconscious lump of the doctor in the backseat and chuckled. He was Beta Jones from the Red Moon pack, and he was just doing what was best for his pack even though his alpha was nonchalant. He looked at the sideview mirror to check if they were still being followed, and to his satisfaction, no one was following them. When they came out on the highway and merged with the traffic, Jones leaned back and removed the leather bag that had been draped over the doctor's face. She was a very beautiful woman, he noted. But there was something about her.He could not tell if she was human, or werewolf. "She has to be human,"

ANNAWHEN I SLOWLY awoke, my head felt like there were two monsters playing catchball in it, but instead of rubber balls, they were using large steel balls.I groaned and turned over, noticing that my hands were untied now. I gently rubbed my head and felt a sharp pain at the back of my neck. That was where I had been hit. There was dried blood surrounding the area. I groaned and l sat up. My vision blurred for a second before my eyes adjusted to the gloom. The air was familiar. I took a deep breath. It smelled like... home.I looked around the room where I had been locked in. It didn't look familiar. The windows were barred shut so I could not look out, or open it from the inside. The room was bare. There was a bed in a corner with a nightstand and lamp, and a single cane chair at another corner. But that was all the furnishing in the room.Who were these people that had kidnapped me and what do they want? I wondered.I remembered that the man had referred to me as "doctor", could

FIVE MONTHS LATER,I RUB my belly fondly. It has become a subconscious habit of mine since the belly bump sprouted. On some nights, I wake up from the nightmares and horrors of being locked up in the prison underground. It has been 5 months already, but the remnants of what we lost were still vivid. Every fallen warrior was given a befitting burial. After the death of the vampires, Paige started having recurring dreams of her lost memories. I had Lorna suppress it again. i also had Lorna wipe out the memory of Janet the mistress, now she was a servant in the palace... "Are we almost there yet?" Addison asked from the back seat. Mitch grunted. "Almost." I turn and look at him. The scar he had gotten from the battle that ran across his eyes was now white, it was healing well. The cut missed his eyes by less than an inch, but the scar added to his dangerous look. I reach out and touch his hand. He turns and looks at me, but I can not decipher what is going on in his head as his eyes

Arranging the warriors for battle on such short notice was not an easy feat as most of his warriors were not familiar with guns, but he had made them ready and prepped for battle under a few hoursHe grunted as a vampire sank his fang into his arm. He growled grabbed the vampire by its head and slammed it into the ground."Keep your head in the fight, Mitch," Draco snapped. "Don't die when she is just a few feet away."Mitch chuckled. He turned and looked at his mate again. She was holding her own well against the vampires surrounding her and Alphonso."Do these things ever finish?" Mitch asked, looking around at the vampires still swarming over the field."We have to take out the elder vampires, or Vladimir himself," Draco said, stabbing a vampire dead on the floor. He shook his spear loose and lo

I saw Lorna clench her jaws in pain as Agatha squeezed her blood into a cup, which she mixed with some herbs and gave to Vladimir. He drank it all in one gulp. Dark red veins streaked up his neck, and his eyes went bloodshot. She walked to me and added, “I will offer the life of the reincarnated grand witch, Annika, and use it to bind the soul of the vampire king, giving him immense power and immunity to the mountain ash wood…““I heard her raise her hand. The air stretched with tension, and time seemed to slow down. I opened my eyes, expecting to see my life flash before my eyes, bu

ANNA KYLIN CHESTER“COME HERE!“ THE grating of the cell on its hinges made me look up. One of the vampires was on the other side. She reached in and pulled me out harshly. My knees scraped the rough floor; I bit my lips to keep the pain in. Another one reached in and tried to grab Lorna but gasped in pain, pulling back immediately. “I will come out myself,“ Lorna said coolly. “But try to touch me again, and it will be the last thing you ever do.“ The vampire stared daggers at her but did not move to grab her again. She cradled her hand, rubbing it fondly. Lorna must have secured herself with some sort of spell. “And you will unhand the Luna immediately too.“ Lorna said in a cold voice to the vampire who had her fingers wrapped tightly on my upper arm. The vampire looked uncertain, but she saw the cold and threatening look on Lorna's face. I was also shocked, but it did the trick. The vampire released me. “Where are we going?“ Lorna asked, but I could guess already. “It is time for

THE FIGHT WAS OVER almost as quickly as it started. We did not stand a chance against Vladimir and he was already getting empowered by the forthcoming blood moon. Lorna was sprawled on the floor, blood seeped from her mouth and her back was twisted in an unnatural angle. I was on my feet, but it was threatening to give way any second. And Vladimir? He did look like he had done anything. No sweat. No hair out of place. He had his sinister smile plastered on his face as he walked towards me. He stopped a few feet away and brushed my cheek with his icy-cold fingers. “Your last few hours should have been enjoyable, Annika.“ he said softly. “But instead, you let that witch,“ he turned and looked at Lorna before he continued, “...to spoil it. Tch.“ she chuffed and walked away. “It is back to square one now.“The woods around were suddenly alive, and things moved in the shadows. ANNA KYLIN CHESTERI SAT UP in my bed, my heart was racing, and adrenaline surged as my wolf leaped to the surface, enhancing my vision, but I could not still make out the shape of the person in my room. I was about to jump through the door, not minding that I would alert the whole mansion, but I felt a pair of fingers wrap around my upper arm. Gasping in shock, I turned sharply, trying to wrestle my arm away from the stranger's grip, but to no avail. I am being attacked by two people, I thought anxiously to myself. I started to yell, but the person holding me stepped out of the shadows and my scream died in my throat."Lorna?!" I gaped. She put a finger to her lip to keep me silent. Then she cocked her head. I swung my legs out of the bed. My mind was spinning with imagination. I still felt like I was in a dream. I reached out and touched her. She was real."Quickly," she said to me. She muttered some words under her breath and the lock in the door snapped apart. The door opened

She might be out of the kingdom now.“ Mitch growled. “Just tell them to search.“ “We should probably get back,“ Draco said, turning to look around. Mitch nodded. He looked at Vorenus. Draco could see the hesitation in Mitch's body language. He knew what mitch was about to do. He dipped his hand into his pocket and tossed a small object at Vorenus who caught it easily, confused at what it was. Suddenly there was a sizzling sound and vorenus dropped the object quickly. The smell of burnt flesh filled the air and Drcao nodded in satisfaction. “What was that?“ Vorenus growled. “Silver, “Draco said. “Silver bullets. He pressed down on the pedal, and the car shot even faster. “This fucking snow,“ he growled as he screeched to a stop. The tires of the car were stuck in the thick layer of snow. He got out of the car; his legs sank almost to his knees.Draco came out too, cursing under his breath. “I wonder whose idea it was to get electric cars to drive over snow,“ he looked at Mitch and added sarcastically. “Oh wait, it was your brilliant idea.“Mitch rubbed his chin and said, “Maybe I should have gone with your idea and bought electric sleds instead.“Draco scoffed, kicking at the snow.Mitch looked around. MITCH CHESTERMITCH KNEW HIS mind should be at rest now that he had reinforcements, but his mind was still worried. He had no doubts that it was because his mate was still out there in danger, his son was lying in bed, unconscious and blind, and his kingdom was on the brink of civil war.He paced the length of the room anxiously, his eyes drifting into the dancing fireplace as he walked past. A small knock came at the door. “Come in,“ he called. The door opened, and Draco came in. He took a look around the small, almost empty room and shook his head, saying, “You are still sleeping here.“Mitch chuffed and nodded, “I can't stay in the master chambers alone. Anna should be with me.“Draco nodded and said, “I understand that, but…“ He looked around again. “I am sure you can do better than a tiny room. There is even no air conditon -““No one uses air conditioning here, Draco,“ Mitch said. He sat on the bed heavily; it creaked under his weight.“There is no ventilation,“ Draco continued,
