The footsteps behind me stopped me from making that jump that would have taken me to my desired freedom.
“Xena," my mother's voice called out, her tone a mix of concern and authority that only a queen could muster.
I turned slowly, startled that she had found me "Mother," I replied, trying to mask my surprise. "I was just..."
"Running away," she finished for me, “Very interesting, isn't it?”
There was a cold judgement in her voice that had me hanging my voice in shame - but not enough to dim the resolve within me.
“How did you know?”
“I'm the queen, Xena.” She said walking closer with a smile on her face, “nothing happens in the demon realm and escapes my watch.”
Her words sent a chill down my spine, and I said nothing.
“Besides, it's my job to know, especially when my only daughter is on the brink of making a grace mistake.”
A grave mistake.
Of course.
I was expecting those words from her especially since those were the same words she uttered the first to fifth time I tried to reason with her.
How exactly do I make her see? Make her understand how overwhelmed I was- how tired I was of being groomed all my life just to become a queen for the demons.
How do I make her see that I needed more - to see and experience more?
“You have to understand me mother,” I said, grabbing her cold hands, “I need to do this. This is not the place for me. I want more than just the duty of the crown.”
Mother, who had been surprisingly calm during the whole exchange, smiled again and with a flick of her fingers dismissed the guards behind her.
Then she put her arm around my shoulder drawing me close to her.
“We do not get to choose our own fates dear child. We already have our destinies written for us, our duties and responsibilities. You are the only heir to the crown. And it's only a coward that runs away from their responsibilities instead of finding a way to bear them.”
Then let me be a coward.
I didn't say it out but I imagine she heard it through our mind links because she sighed and dropped her arm from my shoulders.
“I will not force you into a life you do not want. But understand this, Xena. You are going to regret this decision.”
“I will regret staying more. I know what I want, mother. And one way or the other I'm leaving this place. You can stop me today, but I won't stop trying.”
She stopped, and my heart almost softened at the hint of sadness in her eyes which was only there for s brief second.
“Fine. Know this, Xena. You have been blessed with so much and you chose to throw it away for a short sighted desire. When the time comes and you see the consequences of your actions - you will remember my words. But you will dare not return after you walk away.”
"You had so much power in your hands, Xena and you chose to throw it all away. You shall regret your choice - count my words. And when you do, do not come back to me begging.”************"Maria, you know better than to tease me about the Alpha's son," I chuckled, folding a freshly washed shirt in the laundry shades. "Marriage is the last thing on my mind."Maria grinned mischievously, her eyes dancing with amusement. "Come on, Morrigan. If you marry him, you'll be Alpha's daughter-in-law. No more laundry duties for you!"I shook my head, my smile softening. "Status means nothing to me, Maria. I'd rather earn my place than have it given."She rolled her eyes, “You are so - humble. Annoyingly so. You are so lucky, and if I were in your place, heaven knows that I'd grab the opportunity to get out of this hell hole.”I gave her a smile and returned to my duty. It's been three years since I saw the demon realm and built a new identity for myself - as an omega in the Red fang pack. And se
Maddening rage. That was all I felt, all I could see as I stared at Maria, my best friend. The only friend I've had for the past five years lying lifeless on the floor in the pool of her own blood.I didn't realise I was screaming until I felt the soreness in my throat - but that didn't stop the scream nevertheless.I was boiling in anger - and was two seconds away from snapping.“Shut the fuck up you bitch!” Lucian snapped, gripping me tighter and turning me to face him.His face was cold and contorted in rage, “shut up and stop yelling. This is just the beginning and I will do worse if you dare defile my orders again.”Do worse? I stopped my yelling, but my blood was still boiling with a raging volcano of anger.Do worse?Does he have any idea what he has just done? You do not tempt a demon into rage - and he has successfully done that. For what?“Why?” I whispered, needing to know before I crossed the final edge, “why did you do this? I never did anything wrong to you.”But I knew
Morrigan smiled, and I tilted my head, staring at her with curiosity.Meeting her now, she's nothing like what I've heard Lucian and his friends talk about. There's a huge confidence in her, and a scary coldness in her beautiful purple eyes.“You've got to be joking!” She said, shaking her head.“I promise, we are not.”“Lucian, is your nephew. Let's start from there. So I believe that you heard about him mistreating a stranger and decided to help the stranger get revenge on your nephew?”“See the thing is –” she raised a finger, shutting me up.“I'm not done. Secondly, we just met. And what? You want me to marry you so you can help me get revenge on your nephew which doesn't make sense. I've got two questions,” she folded her arms, “one: why on earth would you propose to a stranger? Two: why would you help a stranger get revenge on your family? What's in it for you?”I exchanged glances with my brothers. It was Dante who stepped forward to answer her.“Things aren't always what they
