Ruby's POV
My wolf felt restless, constantly rubbing against me. She was on edge and I could sense her unease and it was rubbing on me.
" What's wrong with you Lilly?" I asked for the umpteenth time but all I got was silence. She knew something I didn't and was keeping it away from me.
" Something is going to happen to us tonight." She said quietly and I shrugged.
" Of course, we are going to find our mate and he will save us from this hellhole." I answered back, she shook her head. If she was feeling like this then something is bound to happen tonight.
" What is wrong Lily? Don't you think we are going to find him?"
" Of course, it's our eighteenth birthday, we are bound to find our mate tonight." She paused for a while and continued, " I just feel that something's not right about tonight."
" You've been feeling like that for the past two weeks and nothing unusual has happened." I tell her as I dashed into the room.
" I know but it's stronger tonight. Maybe you're right, I need to rest more." I nodded at her.
" Do you think that our mate would like us?" I said suddenly feeling insecure, what if he turned out to be just like everyone?
" Of course he will, even if he doesn't want to, he will, because of the bond." She assured me and I stared at my fingers.
" But I want him to like us the way we are, not because of some mate bond."
" He will, Ruby, now you're the one being paranoid." She said and I nodded. This was our eighteenth birthday, the only chance we have to escape from this hellhole. We can do this. The moon goddess wouldn't pair us with someone who didn't want to be with us. She knows what's best for us and I trust her.
I applied some lip gloss on my lips. This was the first time I was putting on makeup but I didn't mind, I wanted to look attractive for our mate.
I stared at the moonlight, it was time. I sighed.
" He would love us." She urged me and I nodded. I could still feel her anxiousness. Something was going to happen tonight. I hope it benefits me. Maybe the moon goddess had finally heard my prayers and decided that I had been in pain for most part of my life and had decided to grant me rest.
I stared at all the pack members. They all looked happy. Their shining faces booming under the moonlight. This was where mate bonds were accepted and also where they were rejected.
The younger ones around my age were anxious. It was our first shift and we get to meet our mate. I watched as the older ones calmed them, some rocked them whispering sweet words into their ears. I, too, was feeling anxious but I knew there was no one to comfort me. I only had my wolf who had gone silent.
Why couldn't I have that?
The moon was at its peak, it was finally time. I watched as some of them started shifting, comforted by their parents and others around as they went through the pains of shifting. I watched Teresa shift into a big brown wolf and everyone clapped before she shifted back to her human form. My anxiety was getting to the better part of me but I knew that I would never have that. My eyes twitched.
I waited and waited but nothing happened. I closed my eyes and opened them, I was still on my feet. I stared at my hands, no fur yet. I blinked back the tests threatening to drop knowing that there would be no one to comfort me or wipe them for me.
" What's happening Lilly?" I asked my only companion but got no response. She had left me too. It was official, I was now the lonely werewolf.
Suddenly, there was a change in the atmosphere. I could feel it. The intoxicating scent of cinnamon mixed with the scent of the forest hit my node hard. I sniffed harder wondering what the mouthwatering scent was.
I could feel my legs move. I could feel the presence of my wolf as she urged me to follow the scent. As I moved closer, the scent grew stronger until I stopped in front of someone.
" Mate." I called out in a rough voice I couldn't recognise as mine before I couldn't stop myself. I closed my mouth realising who the voice belonged to, it was my wolf.
" Mate." She called out again and I looked up to meet the forest green eyes of Gonzalo.
Wait! The Alpha's son is my mate? I waited for him to move, my wolf watching him through my eyes but he stood where he was as though he were rooted to that exact spot.
I moved closer to him in an attempt to see him. I had finally met my mate, the one who would save me from the cold hands of Danika and her mate and he turned out to be the Alpha's son. The moon goddess definitely did have me in mind.
But he stepped away from me as though my touch would burn him. I felt myself falling and I closed my eyes hoping to fall in the arms of my mate but my lips on kissed the rough ground causing me to whimper.
" He doesn't want us." Lilly whined but I ignored her. Gonzalo was a good man. He wouldn't shove us away like that. He wasn't like the others.
I expected him to offer me his hand but he stood watching me with calculative eyes.
I struggled to my feet and dusted my dress then I saw his eyes filled with…disgust! My mate was disgusted by me. I felt my wolf whimper. She was also hurt by the look on his eyes.
" I, Gonzalo Kanderdust of the Silverwood pack, reject you, Ruby Michaels, as my mate." He voiced out, hate dripping out of every single word.
Ruby's POVI felt my world crumble at that statement. I gripped my stomach tight, it hurt so much. Soon, I found myself on the ground clutching my stomach tight." Accept the rejection or die, not that I care about your death." He said with his hands crossed over his chest. I felt like crying but it seemed as though crying would even hurt.I struggled to sit upright. " I accept your rejection." I said slowly and I felt the pain subside. I reached out for my wolf but she wasn't there. All I could get was the hollow silence in my head. Just how much pain she had taken for me. If I were hurt by that pain, then I probably would have died if she wasn't with me. I tried again but all I got was hollow silence. She probably would be back by tomorrow. She just needed time to heal. She wouldn't leave me like them. She wasn't like any of them. She was right, we had each other and therefore needed no one else. They would only cause us pain.I cleaned my eyes to see Teresa smirking at me. What t
Ruby's POVIt's been months since I lost everything. My wolf never came back, I was still met with hollow silence each time I tried to reach out for her. It's been a long while and nothing has changed, everyone still looked at me as the cursed werewolf with a cursed family and history but I had learnt to ignore those stares. I had accepted my fate. The wounds healed up slowly all thanks to Drako who applied the ointment on them daily but they left scars behind. Scars that would constantly remind me of everything that happened that day. I was scarred for life." You should come with me." Drako nudged me, bringing me out of my thoughts. I shook my head, staying disinterested." Why?" He asked as he put the last button in its corresponding hole and I rolled my eyes." You know the reason." I said slowly, looking away." You could stay with me the entire time."" And ruin your already ruined reputation? No, thanks."" You should let them know that you don't care about what anyone says. Be
Ruby's POVI managed to leave the tense atmosphere of the meeting with Drako's help, but my heart still raced with anxiety. Drako led me to a quieter place, a garden on the outskirts of our pack territory. It was a much more peaceful place with flowers in bloom and a gentle breeze rustling through the leaves.Drako looked at me with concern in his eyes, his hands holding mine gently as if trying to reassure me. "Ruby, you have to understand that staying here is no longer an option. The tension between Gonzalo and Alpha Ralph is dangerous for you."I gazed at him, my heart heavy with indecision. Leaving everything I had ever known was more of a risk than staying here and enduring whatever more would come, but the thought of escaping the constant torment and uncertainty was tempting. "But where would I go? How can I trust Alpha Ralph?"Drako sighed, his fingers tracing patterns on my hand. "Alpha Ralph is powerful and, from what I've heard, honorable. He's determined to make you his mat
Ruby's POVTeresa had left and now it was just me here, a sense of relief washed over me. Her bitter words and the tension between us had made the encounter unbearable. I couldn't help but feel grateful that she had left without hitting me this time, I was still recovering from the previous injuries I sustained from her hands. As I sat on the bench in the garden, my thoughts turned to the secret meeting Drako was arranging between me and Alpha Ralph. I wondered if Teresa had somehow found out about my intentions to leave with the Alpha. She had come from the same direction that Drako had used when he left, and it made me uneasy.I knew that competing with the bond of a father-daughter relationship was futile, and I had no way of knowing if they had met or if Drako had told her any of our plans. However, deep down, I trusted Drako with all that I had. It wasn't like I had a choice not to. He had been my pillar of support in this pack, and I believed he would never do anything to impli
Ruby's POVAlpha Ralph, or rather, Ralph, took my hand gently, his touch surprisingly tender. His eyes held a reassuring warmth as he spoke softly, "Ruby, you don't need to hide anything from me. I'll provide for you everything you need, and no one will hurt you anymore."Tears welled up in my eyes at his words, and I blinked them back, my emotions overwhelming me. I quickly looked down, avoiding his gaze, unable to hide the tears that escaped. It had been so long since anyone had shown me genuine kindness and concern.Ralph didn't let me retreat into myself. He gently cupped my face with his hand, his thumb brushing away the tears that fell. "It's going to be a new start for you, Ruby. You don't have to be afraid anymore."His words wrapped around me like a comforting embrace, and I couldn't help but believe him. It was a promise of a future free from the torment and isolation that had plagued me for so long.I looked up at him, my eyes searching his for any sign of deceit, but all I
Ruby's POVThe journey to Alpha Ralph's pack, the Night Crest Pack, had been surprisingly smooth. The escape from Silverwood had gone off without a hitch, thanks to Alpha Ralph's strength. He had made quick work of the werewolves who were sent to stop us from leaving. His fighting skills were ruthless, and he showed no mercy as he defeated each opponent. We traveled further away from Silverwood, I couldn't help but think of the chaos we had left behind. Gonzalo had received false information about our whereabouts and had led his pack members in the wrong direction. They had ended up heading towards Alpha Ralph's other pack members, and all I could guess happened would be nothing short of a blood bath. Alpha Ralph had managed to defeat them, but not without casualties on both sides. It was a harsh reminder of the violent world we were leaving behind. Gonzalo had attacked and killed some of Alpha Ralph's pack members in his misguided pursuit of us.By the time Gonzalo realized his err
Ruby's POVElena, led me away from the crowd, her firm grip on my hand. The murmurs of the pack members lingered in the air, but I chose to keep my gaze fixed on the ground, avoiding their curious stares. As we walked in silence, I couldn't help but be captivated by the beauty of Alpha Ralph's pack. It was a striking contrast to Silverwood, and the sheer size of it drew my attention. The landscape was vast and bubbling with life, a stark departure from the isolation and misery I had experienced in my former pack. Our journey eventually led us to a massive cabin that could have easily been mistaken for a mansion. While it had an air of age to it, the structure stood strong, crafted entirely from wood. I sighed with relief as Elena opened the cabin door for me to enter. The interior of the cabin was spacious and well-maintained. It had a rustic charm that was both welcoming and comforting. I stepped inside the cabin "Thank you?". I whispered under my breath. Even though we hadn't excha
Ruby's POVStepping out of the bathroom and wrapping a towel around myself, I entered the room. My gaze fell upon the bed, there was a pile of different clothes and underwear neatly laid out. Elena had thoughtfully given me the opportunity to choose, a rare luxury I hadn't experienced in a long time. My eyes settled on a gray dress, I had a thing for dark colors, that way I don't get attention on myself. As I dressed, I couldn't help but steal glances at the full-length mirror in the room. It was the first time in a while that I had seen my entire reflection. I stared at my skinny frame and frowned at the sight. I wondered what Alpha Ralph saw in me, why he had chosen to save me from the misery of Silverwood, the thought of him having me as his mate still sent shivers down my spine, I hadn't fully thought of it yet. Turning to the side, I noticed picture frames on a nearby table. Among the photos of Elena, I saw two older-looking people whom I assumed were her parents. A pang of lon
Gonzalo's POVThe words hung heavy in the air, a declaration of Alpha Ralph's apparent victory. Just as the tension reached its peak, Alpha Ralph waved his hand, and to our shock, half of Alpha Michael's pack members broke formation and joined him.He had been manipulating almost everyone throughout his stay in the pack during the competition. The realization hit me like a punch to the gut. The allies we thought we had were now standing with our adversary.Alpha Michael's face contorted with shock and disbelief. The pack members who had stood by us were now seemingly under Alpha Ralph's control. The betrayal was not only strategic but deeply personal.Just then, Drako emerged from the shadows with another set of his own pack members and stood by Alpha Ralph's side. The alliance between Alpha Ralph and Drako became alarmingly evident.Drako sneered at A
Gonzalo's POVI made my way back to Alpha Michael's tent, my mind racing with the urgency of the situation. As I approached, Alpha Michael emerged, his expression a mix of concern and stern determination."Gonzalo," he greeted, his voice low. "You'd better be right about this. If you're wrong, it could cost you everything.""I know the risks, Alpha Michael, but I've seen something that doesn't sit right. We can't afford to ignore the signs," I replied, the weight of responsibility evident in my words.Alpha Michael nodded, his eyes penetrating mine. "Lead the way. We need to act swiftly and decisively if there's a threat to the pack."We moved through the camp, Alpha Michael issuing orders to several trusted pack members to form a defensive position. The urgency in his voice conveyed the gravity of the situation."Get into position
Ruby's POVI rushed toward the door but before I could react, Teresa rushed towards me with the same swiftness and held me tightly. I attempted to scream, but she covered my mouth. Panic set in as I struggled against her grip."Ruby, calm down. I didn't come to hurt you," Teresa whispered urgently.I continued to struggle, my eyes wide with fear and distrust. Teresa tightened her hold but spoke with a soothing tone, "Please, just give me a chance to explain. I mean no harm."Reluctantly, I ceased my struggles, eyeing Teresa warily. She loosened her grip, taking a step back. "Thank you for not screaming. I need you to listen, Ruby."I eyed her cautiously but remained silent, allowing her to continue."I've been watching, and I know the dangers that lie ahead. I'm not here to align myself with Alpha Ralph. In fact, I wa
Ruby's POVI walked away from the bustling competition grounds, the moonlit corridors of the crimson Red Pack's territory stretched ahead. The night air carried a mix of excitement and tension, mirroring the conflicting emotions within me. I couldn't shake the feeling that the challenges unfolding in the competition were only the beginning of a larger narrative. As I approached my room, the heavy wooden door loomed ahead. A sense of fatigue washed over me, both from the emotional weight of breaking the mate bond and the anticipation of what lay ahead. Pushing the door open, I entered a space that had been my sanctuary, a place where I could reflect and gather my thoughts. However, before I could fully immerse myself in the solitude of my room, I saw my mother, Elsa, walking through the same moonlit hallways. Her figure appeared ethereal in the soft glow, and I couldn't help but f
Gonzalo's POVI sprinted through the woods, running away from the designated path of the final challenge, a sense of urgency fueled my every step. Glancing back, I ensured no one had spotted my sudden change of route. Alpha Ralph was far ahead, consumed by the race without even looking back for a moment.Reaching my tent, a wave of relief washed over me. Just as I caught my breath, I noticed Lucas preparing to leave. Instinctively, I called him back, his eyes wide with surprise."Lucas, wait!" I called out, the urgency in my voice stopping him in his tracks. He turned, a mixture of fear and confusion etched on his face. I approached him, holding him firmly by the shoulders. "Lucas, it's me. You don't need to be scared. There's something you need to know."His eyes searched mine, searching for reassurance. "What's going on, Gonzalo? Why did
Gonzalo's POVThe moon ascended higher in the night sky, casting its silvery glow over the competition grounds and where Ruby and I had been a few moments ago, I stood in a spot to observe the unfolding events. The air crackled with anticipation. It was the last dance, one that held a huge significance even though Ruby had chosen me, I was determined to win.Despite the significance of the moment, my thoughts lingered on what transpired earlier. The breaking of the mate bond with Alpha Ralph weighed heavily on my mind. Ruby's bold move had set a new path for the pack, challenging tradition and embracing a path less traveled. As we watched the trials unfold, Teresa's presence added another layer of complexity. Her gaze bore into Ruby, a mix of curiosity and calculation evident. The dynamics between them, intertwined with my own history, cast a shadow over the competition.&
The weight of my decision lifted as I left my father's study. His support meant the world to me, and I felt a renewed sense of determination. The pack's curious glances followed me as I walked through the corridors, but I was ready to face whatever challenges awaited.Leaving the pack quarters, I made my way to the competition grounds. The sun cast long shadows, creating an otherworldly atmosphere as I approached the central area where the mate bonds were formed and broken. The competition had been a journey of self-discovery, and now it was time to navigate the complexities of severing the bond with Alpha Ralph. As I reached the designated spot, Alpha Ralph was already waiting. His imposing figure exuded authority, and his eyes bore into mine with a mixture of curiosity and reservation. The pack members, sensing the significance of the moment, had gathered at a respectful distance, creating a circle around us.
Ruby's POVThe lingering tension between Gonzalo and me demanded resolution, and I didn't intend to let the uncertainty fester any longer. I guided him to a more secluded corner, away from prying eyes and curious ears. The atmosphere was thick with unspoken questions, and I needed answers."Okay, Gonzalo, we need to talk," I said, my voice firm, as I cornered him against the wall.He sighed, a mixture of reluctance and understanding in his eyes. "Ruby, can we not do this here? It's not the right time."I narrowed my eyes, feeling the weight of frustration settling in. "We're going to do this now. The pack already senses something is off, and I won't let rumors spiral out of control."Gonzalo glanced around, as if hoping to find a way out of the impromptu confrontation. "Ruby, I understand your concern, but we can't discuss everything here
Ruby's POVThe next day dawned with a sense of heaviness in the air, mirroring the weight on my shoulders. The events of the previous night had left a lingering tension within the Moonshade Pack, and I couldn't shake the feeling that the storm was far from over.I found myself in the pack's common area, a space that usually buzzed with activity but now held a palpable stillness. As I navigated through the room, the pack members cast fleeting glances my way, whispering among themselves. The air was thick with unspoken questions, and I could feel the weight of their expectations pressing on me.Gonzalo's absence was conspicuous, and a part of me wondered if he was avoiding me after the revelation about Teresa. I needed to find him, to clear the air and understand where we stood amid the chaos that unfolded. As I approached the doorway leading to the training grounds, my mother, Elsa, inte
