He paused and I stiffened, sitting up a bit straighter. His light brown eyes were calculating as he gave me a once-over. My heart stuttered nervously. Avery glanced at me in concern as well when she caught Jared’s look.
He gave me a long look before facing the rest of the pack. “Needless to say, rogues are extremely dangerous and must be treated as such.”
Again, his hard gaze fell on me and my eyes widened. “And tonight, we have one among us.”
It was clear that word of my arrival had not reached many people, which wasn’t extremely surprising. Gasps and shocked exclamations echoed throughout the room. I ducked my head slightly, cursing Jerkface Jared to the pits of hell when a few members at our table sent looks of fear and disgust my way.
All Jared had to do was narrow his eyes slightly over the crowd and they quieted immediately. “That being said, interacting with the rogue girl without my permission is strictly prohibited.”
I looked up at him in shock at that announcement, unsure how to feel about it. A part of me wanted to protest and openly show my hate toward him.
What had I done in my short time in the Moonstone community that led him to ostracize me from everyone else? If he thought of me as such a danger to his pack, why had he agreed to let me stay at all? My anger toward him grew when more dirty looks were thrown my way. The last thing I needed was for more members of the pack to resent me.
However, a small voice in the back of my mind pointed out that the alpha’s order was the best-case scenario. It was obvious that Jared was making his hatred for me plain by ordering his pack to stay away from me, but this meant that I would be protected from them as well.
No one was allowed to interact with me. That would have to include harassing and harming me.
No matter how unlikely it was, I couldn’t help a weak voice questioning in my head. Did he know what Damien did? Could it be that he was actually trying to protect me?
Avery squeezed my hand beneath the table. I could tell by her bright green eyes that she felt the same way. She was happy for me, but she seemed regretful as well, as if she hated that I was essentially being isolated because of my rogue identity.
Our eyes widened as we gazed at each other, both seeming to realize another important detail at the same time.
She wouldn’t be allowed to interact with me either.
“Avery.”
She jumped when Jared said her name in a low voice.
Avery ducked her head. “Yes, Alpha?”
Jared narrowed his eyes. “Since it was you who brought the rogue here, I feel it is only fitting that you are responsible to ensure she doesn’t cause any trouble. If any issues arise concerning her, you are the one who will report to me about it. Understood?”
I rolled my eyes like I was known for causing problems.
However, Avery chirped with glee. “Yes, Alpha!”
Once Jared’s face was turned away from us, Avery and I exchanged a grin. We would be able to continue to see each other, and no one would be allowed to bother me anymore.
Maybe things were starting to look up after all.
“With all due respect, Alpha,” said a deep, resonant voice. “I fail to see why we’re allowing the rogue to stay. She presents a real danger to those of us in the pack.”
The man who had spoken was at the same table as Amanda, implying that he must be linked to the council in some way. He was an older man with gray sprinkled in his dark hair, but he was still almost as large as Jared.
Jared was calm when he answered, but I noticed the slightest tick in his jaw. “I’ve allowed her to stay since she has provided us with a lead toward possibly resolving the water shortage.”
The older man didn’t back down. His thick, bushy eyebrows rose. “I’m surprised that you would take the filthy rogue’s word so easily, Alpha. Could it be that you’ve placed some trust in her?”
I could feel the shock fall over the crowd at the man’s blatant challenge toward their leader.
Jared’s face had hardened considerably. The gold flecks in his eyes seemed to spark. His voice was cold and deadly. “Of course not. You have my word that if she fails to resolve this issue within the next twenty-four hours, she’ll die by my hands.”
I shrunk down in my seat, shivering slightly at the alpha’s words.
“Then please do remember your own promise to the pack.” The old man smirked, seeming satisfied by Jared’s answer.
Jared surveyed the crowd, his stony expression set. “Now, if there are no further questions,” he said through his teeth and it sounded like a definite warning. “Let’s proceed to the meal.”
Everyone waited until Jared took his seat at the head table before digging into the meal, which consisted of some thin bread, roasted meats, and fruit.
Jared’s table was next to ours so I was able to hear Amanda’s voice clearly. As soon as he sat down, she pouted and looked up at him with large eyes. “Is that all you have to announce?”
“Yes, that’s all for today.” Jared’s voice was curt and unfriendly. He was obviously still frustrated by the older man’s challenging comments.
Was there supposed to be more announcements?
Amanda frowned but didn’t say anything else, only looking down at her plate, as if she was hurt.
To my shock, Jared’s voice softened, his eyebrows smoothing out and his jaw going slack. He lowered his voice before he spoke again. “There have been too many things going on lately, Amanda. A more appropriate time will come soon.”
Amanda smiled at him in response before starting to eat.
My jaw almost dropped in disbelief. I didn’t think it was possible for the Jerkface to have a conversation without being an asshole. I watched the two for a moment, wondering what they could possibly be talking about that made Jared soften so much, or made Amanda look so hopeful.
But then I shook my head and started eating. It wasn’t any of my business.
Everyone else was eating dutifully, making polite conversations. For the most part, they were ignoring me and avoiding my eye, but a few looked over at me with disdain. I was surprised when Avery returned a couple of the looks, narrowing her eyes back at them. Most of them backed off, returning to their food, but a couple of the women closer to our age gave her a warning glare.
Once Jared finished with his food, he stood up and left just as abruptly as he had come. A dark-haired man about his age followed him out.
“That’s his right-hand man, Kent,” Avery told me in a low voice. She furrowed her eyebrows, watching them go as well. “They’ve been busier than normal due to all of the security incidents occurring recently.”
I nodded in understanding, thinking about how my father and Uncle Ben were often away from the pack as well, busing with their work. Being the Alpha and Beta of the pack came with great burdens of responsibilities. They weren’t blood-related, but they were closer than real brothers, and I was told to call Ben my uncle for as long as I remember.
“Kent is the Beta?” I asked.
“Nope,” Avery lowered her voice and sneakily pointed at the older man who challenged Jared earlier. “That guy is. His name is Travis and he is Amanda’s dad.”
My eyes bulged, couldn’t understand Jared’s choice of his second-in-command. Even a blind person could see that Kent was more suitable to be Jared’s Beta.
But again, none of my business.
As soon as they were gone, the noise level grew exponentially. Soon, the pack members were laughing much louder than they had been before Jared left. A few even got out of their seats to visit with some friends at other tables. Many people at our table stood up and left, dragging their chairs away to sit elsewhere.
It was obvious that it was because of me. I didn’t mind. In fact, I felt a huge wave of relief when I realized that they were no longer allowed to interact with me.
However, that relief didn’t last long.
Feeling like I was being watched, I whipped my head around, wondering why I felt so uneasy all of a sudden. I should have known that Damien was staring at me with greed swimming in his eyes. I did my best to ignore him, turning to face my sole companion.
The idea of being isolated was getting more appealing when I glanced at Avery, who was eating happily as if people leaving her table was an everyday occurrence. One true friend was better than a hundred fake ones.
I stuck my tongue out teasingly when Avery looked my way. “The food is fine, but it’s nothing compared to your cooking.”
Avery giggled a light sound that had me laughing along with her. “I’ll cook for you again soon,” she promised.
We chatted lightly for a while about cooking. I was unsurprised to find that Avery had learned to cook at a young age. She learned from her grandmother and commented that she would have to make me her grandma’s famous cookies soon.
My mouth started to drool just by her mentioning the dessert.
Suddenly, I sensed another, more hostile pair of eyes on me. I frowned and locked eyes with Amanda, who looked ready to leap across the space between us and bite my head off.
I just blinked at her before turning my attention back to Avery, who was shaking her head warily. “Just ignore her. She’s obsessed with Jared and is cruel to any she-wolf that even looks at him. She’s the daughter of one of the elders, which apparently means she should get special treatment and should be allowed to tell everyone else what to do.” Avery rolled her eyes to the ceiling and then paused as another thought struck her.
She hummed thoughtfully, turning her head to look at another table.
I felt my eyebrows furrow. “What is it?”
She lowered her head toward mine. “Damien is Amanda’s cousin.”
She nodded when my eyes rounded with shock. “I wonder if she had anything to do with him… visiting you earlier.”
A snarl built in my throat but I forced it back down. The last thing I wanted to do was make a scene. I inhaled deeply, reasoning to myself that this was just a theory. We had no proof.
Avery’s explanation sparked another question. “Why would Jared allow Amanda to have special treatment? Just because she’s the beta’s daughter?” I asked.
Avery looked around to confirm no one was within earshot. “When Alpha was a child, Travis saved his life once. He was also the beta for Alpha Jared’s father, so Alpha kind of inherited him. As a result, Travis’ whole family received more respect than the typical Beta. Unfortunately, Amanda learned pretty quickly that she could get away with abusing the Alpha’s gratitude.”
I shook my head in amazement, scoffing with disgust. That was definitely in line with Amanda’s personality. A tiny part of me felt sorry for Jared. He might not even be aware that he was being taken advantage of.
Avery looked past me and narrowed her eyes, her mouth twisting into a scowl. “Don’t look now…”
I grimaced and knew what was happening even before I turned to look for myself.
Amanda was stalking toward us purposefully, looking ready for a fight.
Her pointed nose was tilted up as she walked, but she somehow kept her icy blue eyes on me the entire time she crossed the space between us. While the other men and women at the dinner were dressed in semi-formal attire, Amanda took it upon herself to wear a shimmering blood-red gown that looked like it belonged on a runway. She was undoubtedly angry about something. Her black heels clicked against the smooth floor. Her fiery hair fell in luscious waves down her back, with shimmering pins holding a few strands away from her heart-shaped face.I hated to admit it, but she had a pretty face.I felt Avery straighten in her seat as Amanda approached. She tried to keep her tone pleasant as she smiled at the girl. “Hello, Amanda. Is there something you need from me?”Amanda flipped some of her wavy red locks off her shoulder before poking her lower lip out. “I just wanted to offer my condolences to you, Avery. It sounds awfully t
I shivered delicately, Jared’s voice seemed to echo through the small space of my bedroom. His eyes burned in the dim lighting. For some strange reason, I wasn’t afraid. A part of me felt resigned. From the moment I stepped foot on Moonstone territory, I knew that death was a possibility for me. Perhaps I had been lucky to make it this long. However, I also felt a spark of rage rise up within me. I tried to jerk my chin out of Jared’s grip, but he held me tightly. “If you’re here to kill me, then what are you waiting for?” I spat coldly. “Get on with it!”I swallowed as my own arrogant voice reached my ears. I regretted the way I spoke as soon as the corner of Jared’s lips tightened before tilting upward slightly. If I didn’t know him better, I might mistake the bastard’s sneer for amusement.Either way, I refused to break eye contact with him. If he killed me, I wanted to look him defiantly in the eye as he did.My coherent thoughts scattered for a moment as I attempted to glare at h
I should have known better than to trust a rogue, I thought to myself as I paced along the edge of the lake. She would apparently rather die by drowning than by my hands, which I respected in a way. I cursed again, even louder.I could have easily grabbed her before she dove in. She was quick, but I knew that I was faster. Why was I hesitating so much?I was just about to jump into the lake to look for her when a small dark head emerged from the depths.Rogue Girl shook her long dark hair away from her eyes and peered up at me. She waved her arm, gesturing behind her. “This way!”I blew out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. Looking in the direction she was gesturing, my eyebrows rose at the island toward the middle of the lake. Before I could say anything, she turned and started to swim toward the island.I hesitated briefly before jumping in after her.She didn’t look like it considering how small and frail she appeared, but Rogue Girl was a decent swimmer. She seemed to e
*Jared*Part of me was relieved when Rogue Girl announced that she needed to rest. I didn’t want to suggest it myself, but she was starting to look run down. The usual healthy pink hue on her cheeks had faded, leaving behind a pasty white. Her bright blue eyes seemed to lose their shine as well as she started to slow down. She probably needed more than just rest. She probably needed to lie down. I turned to order her to do just that, but just in time to watch her shut her eyes and fall into the raging river.I thanked the Goddess for my quick reaction when my body propelled itself forward. I cursed immediately after when the girl’s body disappeared beneath the surface. I had to sprint alongside the river to keep up with the monstrous current. I could barely make out her silhouette beneath the waves, and it was even more difficult to keep my eyes trained on it as I ran.I gritted my teeth before breaking into the fastest run I could muster, pushing my body as much as I could, allowing
Jared and I were silent for several moments as we stared at the wall of water. It was obvious that we were thinking the same thing. The entrance was flooded. We wouldn’t make it if we tried to swim through as we had coming into the cave. The distance had likely more than doubled due to the rain, and it would be entirely underwater this time. Trying would just result in us drowning about halfway. We seemed to realize this at the same time. My shoulders slumped in defeat while Jared’s clenched fists started to shake in anger.I was worried that he might actually shift from the rage he seemed to be experiencing.Despite the fact that Jared didn’t even seem to see me anymore due to his blinding fury, I walked up to him, which wasn’t smart. I should be worried that he could accidentally hurt me in this state, but somehow I was certain he wouldn’t.I put my hands up in a pacifying way.“Calm down,” I said in a gentle tone, but loudly.Jared finally focused on me and I was forced to really d
Jared lowered himself into a defensive crouch that still managed to look menacing as the band of wolves surrounded us. He stepped in front of me, shielding me from their view as best as he could. No matter what else he was, he was a good alpha.I peeked around Jared to get a better look at the wolves. It was obvious due to how scraggly their fur looked that they weren’t part of a true pack. Their fur color ranged from sandy brown to a dark brown that was almost black. The largest wolf, likely their alpha of sorts, stepped out of the circle.Jared’s deep voice came out as a snarl. “Who are you?”The large, dark-colored wolf smirked, showing off two rows of sharp, yellow teeth. He shifted back to his human form to speak. “Why bother learning my name when you’re going to die so soon?”“Because you’re intruding on my land without my permission!” he snapped, his voice a vicious growl. The leader barked out a laugh and looked around at the rest of his group, who started to laugh along with
Weightlessness. That was what I was feeling. It was a sensation I had come to embrace over the course of my life. Many chose to fear it due to the helplessness or lack of control it causes, but not me. I’ve found from living on my own that there were things that I couldn’t control, and the only way to not drive myself crazy or dead was to let go.Everything was peaceful here. No noise and no pain.I blinked up at the night sky. The moon was shining brightly overhead through the trees. I’d never seen the moon being so large before.I was following the river, allowing the tug from the current to guide me forward. I glanced up, locking eyes with a beautiful wolf. The wolf was a stunningly smooth gray color, almost like silver, with bluish tints to the coat.“Hey, wait!” I called out, but it leaped and started to run along the river, its long legs allowing it to bound gracefully through the air. It turned its majestic head to look at me, its bright blue eyes beckoning.I tried to take a s
I was sure that the rest of the room felt the same.As soon as Jared made his way across the room, a hush fell over the crowd. Everyone stared straight ahead toward the stage but wasn’t looking at me. The only sound that could be heard was the clicking of Jared’s shoes as he walked.I couldn’t read Jared’s expression as he made his way toward me. How did he feel knowing that he almost welcomed a wolfless omega into his pack? He must have figured it out when we were attacked, but he still brought me back.Even normal omegas got their wolves. It was possible for the weakest of the weak not to, but it was extremely rare. Packs with such omegas could expect to carry huge burdens in order to accommodate them.Naturally, this led to many of them, if their pack is especially sympathetic, to acquire work as maids or servants. Others were forced to do hard labor. This was the kind of work that was fitting in order for them to earn their place among the pack.In the less merciful packs, however
*Claire*As we approached our camp for lunch, my nose twitched, taking in a medley of odors that didn't belong to Todd, Bryan or Frank. “Alan, wait a moment!” He responded with a nod. “We have visitors.”We slowed our pace and fell into a crouch. Peering through the foliage, I saw Frank's back was pressed against the tree where Bryan was tied up against. Next to him was Todd and Bryan. The ropes that had bound Bryan now lay discarded on the ground. They were circled by ten rugged scavengers, while two other were rummaging through our belongings."Thank Goodness you're back. Help, Claire," Todd's voice cut through the stillness, "Those freaking omegas, they are stealing our food!""Stay back!” One of the bigger attackers barked in a gruff voice. I assumed he was their leader. "If you don't want your friends to die."I shifted my weight, ready to charge. Despite them having a bigger number, there was no doubt in my mind that we were stronger and faster. Just then, Alan pulled me bac
I whipped my head toward Alan. Suddenly, the air was thick with tension. Todd locked eyes with Alan, neither willing to break the stare. "Todd," I said, tugging at his arm, trying to defuse the situation, "I can just stay here with you. Alan, do you mind hunting without me?" Not that I fully trust Alan, but I also didn’t want to fracture the fragile alliance we'd just build. Besides, Alan seemed to know quite a lot, and I was hoping to get more information from him. Suddenly, a glint of metal caught my eye. Alan's hand moved and a dagger charged toward Todd. "Watch out!" I yelled, adrenaline surging through me. However, the tip of the blade stopped right in front of Todd’s heart, barely touching his skin. "What’s this all about?" Todd inquired, his voice steady, remarkably unfazed compared to my own racing heart. His eyes remained locked on Alan, expecting an explanation. Alan smirked. He extended the dagger to Todd. "Take this." Todd frowned, but he still took the dagger. Ala
*Claire* After Alan mentioned that our potential threats from Reeva, Todd and I almost immediately agreed to the alliance proposal. As a token of good faith, we shared half of our jerky. “Bryan and Frank can take turns to carry Todd,” Alan said while chewing the dry meat, “Sorry, man, we broke a few bones of yours.” “All good,” Todd grinned, “I’ll enjoy my ride for the next few days.” I knelt beside Todd, examining his wounds and the jagged line of his broken bones. “Hold still, Todd, I need to align your bones.” Alan stood a short distance away, watching me. “You're quite skillful at healing. It's not exactly a common skill among rogues. Were you a born healer?” "Not exactly." I secured a sturdy branch against Todd's leg with strips of fabric torn from my shirt. “Then how did you learn it?” “I was once told, that as a weak and useless omega, I should at least pick some skill and do my part for the…pa, people around me.” I realized that I almost let my past slip. I frowned.
A huge rogue stepped out, his body marked by scars of survival, his gaze fixed on our fresh provisions. Behind him were two other smaller wolves. Todd’s wolf had jumped between me and our foes by now, his low growling warned the rogues to back off. I kept to my human form. Todd and I had a plan for situations like this. If attacked and one of us wasn't shifted, we'd stay in our perspective forms. The human would be the bait and play weak, luring the enemy into a false sense of security, while the wolf waited to strike at the right moment. That was why we always camped near trees with climbing ropes at the ready for a quick getaway if needed. In this case, I was the bait. “Don’t… don’t come over!” I faked a shaky, small voice, while getting my escaping ropes ready and started running away. Usually, one of the wolves would go after me, and Todd would evaluate the situation and launch his blow. However, none of the three wolves moved. The hell? Why didn’t it work? I gasped as t
“Wait a moment!” Kent went after me. “What?” I glared at him. He knew he couldn’t talk me out of it. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to stop you. It’s Avery. She just mindlinked me.” He paused, “Urgent.” “What happened?” I frowned. Ever since Claire’s departure, Avery did her best to avoid me. Deep down, she probably blamed me for everything, and she was right, I pushed Claire away. “She said she spotted Amanda and Damien together in the small woods near the lake, Amanda was arguing with him and mentioned something like ‘another vial’. Avery said she was going to tail them and asked me to tell you that…” Kent looked at me a bit worriedly, and cleared his voice and mimicked Avery’s voice “ ‘if the Alpha is upset with me, he can punish me when I’m back.’” “How dare she!” I growled. “You’re not really going to punish her, aren’t you,” Kent hurriedly defended her, “You know, she would never disobey you with ill intention. She’s just—” “Ask her to keep a safe distance and repo
*Jared*I kissed her hard, feeling the desperation surge through me as I hugged her close to my chest. I knew this couldn’t last. I had been through this heartbreak dozens of times already, each time more painful than the last. Some invisible force yanked me away roughly and I was forced to look down into Claire’s confused, but gorgeous blue eyes. Her lips quivered into a frown and I badly wanted to kiss her again so that the sad form would disappear.“I reject you,” I heard myself say in a low, cruel voice.Pain exploded on her face and large tears streamed down her smooth cheeks, as anguish and agony ripped my heart apart.Just as I thought the excruciating burn from the rejection was going to tear me into pieces, I woke up.I gasped and sat up in my bed, my whole body shaking at the nightmare. I wiped a hand over my face, groaning at the pounding headache that felt like it was threatening to split my skull open.
She tried to rip her arm away from my hand, but I held on to her wrist.Yes, I would have to let her go eventually, but not yet.Not right now.She took a deep breath, and then finally parted her rosy lips.“Good, you’re awake,” she said, her voice flat.I tried not to let my expression change at how calm and almost indifferent her tone was. She was acting as if she wasn’t experiencing any kind of emotional turmoil that I had been.No way that was true. I read the intensity in her eyes just now and when we were in the throne room. The pull between us was powerful, undeniable. She had to be feeling it, which meant she was fighting it.I didn’t say anything, just continued to observe her as she started to struggle in my hold. She refused to give in to her own feelings or the irresistible connection between us.Just how stubborn was this woman?“What are you doing? Please let go of me.&rd
I had subconsciously avoided looking at Jared ever since Bentley was dead because I couldn’t bring myself to face my mate’s miserable state. However, there was only so long I could drag.“Todd, give me a hand please.”“You don’t have to get up. Just tell me what to do … okay, fine.”Todd helped me over to Jared after he saw my stubborn face.I almost regretted it as soon as I saw Jared. His handsome face was swollen and bloody, and his eyes were shut. Even in his unconsciousness, he seemed to be undergoing a great amount of pain.My knees gave in, and I kneeled over him. Tears were already streaming down my cheeks as I dug through the medical pouch on my waist, thanking the Goddess that I thought to pack medical supplies.Luckily, his chest was rising and falling slightly but evenly, giving me some confidence. I brushed the tears from my cheek and got to work, using everything I had learned fr
Our enemies had gotten stronger. In the short time since our last battle, the Blood Moon pack had somehow doubled in numbers and were much less sloppy in terms of their strategy. We had to be steadfast and diligent as we moved through the trees.“Three men per group. One defends, one attacks and the third should act as a watchman for the group, focusing on identifying the invisible attacker while providing aid to your other two group mates!!” I gave my order, and within fifteen seconds, my warriors finished forming their groups.“Kent,’ I instructed my Gamma via mind link, “take a small team and stay hidden. We need to figure out what the hell is behind the invisible attackers and how they work!”“Got it.”Then we charged toward our enemies, me included.I fought alongside two warriors just like the rest of my troops. My role in our small group was the watchman. I took a deep breath and started
