I stepped back, my heart pounding when the man who just entered my room shut the door behind him, locking it firmly.
I didn’t recognize him. His eyes were so dark, they looked black in the dim lighting of my room. His sandy brown hair was choppy and messy around his angular face. He grinned when he saw me and it wasn’t a kind smile.
“Get out,” I snapped, having a bad feeling that he wasn’t going to obey.
I was right. His dark eyes just danced with amusement as he sauntered toward me.
“My apologies,” he said, though he didn’t sound sorry in the slightest. “I just figured I would offer you a greeting of sorts. That was quite the show you put on in the throne room earlier.”
I hugged the towel tighter around my body and raised my voice, making it firmer and hopefully more threatening. “Get the hell out, now!”
He just chuckled, rolling his eyes as if I was a silly child. “Don’t think so. I was sent over with strict orders from the alpha to make sure that the filthy little rogue stays out of trouble.”
Jared sent him?! A fire of anger coursed through my body.
He continued toward me, crouching slightly as if he planned to give chase. I stiffened. Normally, I would have already lunged at the creep but I couldn’t risk my towel falling.
I took a few more steps back, keeping as much distance as I could between us. “I’m warning you to stay away from me.”
He ignored me, grinning, his sharp canines glinting. “Were you trying to wash off the filth, little rogue? You can try all you want. You’ll still be a worthless outcast no matter how many showers you take.”
I cursed inwardly when I found myself pressed into the far corner of the room. I glared at the guy, my teeth clenched together, my hands tight on the towel.
He chuckled darkly when my back hit the wall. “Play nice now,” he cautioned as he reached a hand out toward me. “Your body is the only thing about you with any kind of worth. Surrender it nicely to me and I promise not to hurt you.”
He reached for my towel but I turned to the side, shielding the opening of the fabric. “Don’t you dare touch me!” I shrieked and kicked him in the shin.
However, he didn’t seem fazed at all when my bare foot made contact. I had no wolf. It probably felt like a feather bouncing off him.
Suddenly, his hand shot out and gripped my chin, his other arm wrapping around my bare shoulders. His rough hands were slick, causing my stomach to churn as he rubbed my skin. Nausea rolled through me at his slimy touch. I whimpered, struggling against him.
“Oh, you’ll be making plenty of those noises in a little bit, you nasty thing,” he cooed, brushing my lips with his thumb. I nearly gagged at the sensation. He chuckled again. “Maybe having me inside of you will cleanse you of some of that rogue filth.”
No.
I’d looked death in the face several times during my lifetime, but nothing compared to this. This vile creature touching me filled me with more fear than I’d ever experienced. I felt paralyzed, the only movement I could manage was the intense hammering of my heart against my ribcage.
It was getting difficult to breathe as I willed my body to move. I had to escape. I would rather die than endure this man’s touch. His fingers caused my skin to prickle uncomfortably and my stomach to twist painfully.
I did the only thing my body would allow me to do at that moment.
I screamed, as loudly and as shrill as my voice would allow.
“Quiet!” my attacker barked, slapping his hand over my mouth to muffle my cries.
Another wave of nausea passed over me as I attempted to struggle once again, but he was much larger and much stronger than I was. All I could do was tighten my hands over my towel, my only piece of protection. The scumbag seemed to realize this as well and smirked before placing a hand on my waist, over the thick fabric.
“Afraid to show me what you got under there?” he asked, his voice filled with disgusting amusement. He scoffed and tugged lightly at the hem, right around my upper thighs. “You might as well show me. Don’t worry, I’m already prepared to be sorely disappointed, but that doesn’t mean I won’t play with what you do have.”
My breath hitched when the unmistakable sound of ripping fabric met my ears. I looked down to find rather than pulling the towel away from me, he was shredding it easily with his free hand. With his large hand still over my mouth, he forced my head up so that I had to look him in the eye while he slowly stripped me of my protective layer.
I tried to scream again, but he just grabbed my mouth even tighter and shook me roughly. “Shut up or I’ll have to gag you, and trust me, you won’t like it, especially when you learn what I’ll use to do it.”
Tears rolled down my cheeks at his words. I couldn’t let him violate me this way, but there was nothing I could do. I felt my body slumping with defeat. I shut my eyes tightly, screaming in my mind for someone, anyone to help me.
Please, anyone! I didn’t want this. I would rather die!
HELP, PLEASE!
“AH-OOOO!”
The guy’s hands froze over me when the room rumbled with a penetrating howl. The sound pierced through the air, likely carrying for miles around.
My attacker cursed under his breath. “Who the hell calls for dinner so fucking early?”
He looked down at me. “It’s a pity that I have to leave soon. That means you’ll only get a few minutes of me, but you’d best make the most of it!”
He shoved me against the wall, pressing up against me and snaking his hand down between my legs.
Tears rolled down my cheeks and I closed my eyes in despair.
The door burst open at that moment with a loud bang. The guy dropped his hands and we both turned just in time to see Avery curl her claws back into her hands.
Avery was tiny, but so frightening when her wide green eyes swept over my attacker, and then to me. She bared her teeth, canines glinting when she took in the sight of my shredded towel.
“Damien,” she spat, taking a threatening step forward. “Step away from her!”
Damien straightened and rolled his eyes, not the least bit intimidated despite the fact that Avery looked ready to rip his head off. “Calm your tits, Avery. I’m under the alpha’s orders.”
I felt my blood boil at his words. I growled low. “If he wants to just kill me, he’s welcome to do so without making me someone else’s fuck toy!”
Avery glanced at me briefly, and her gaze softened slightly before she glared heatedly at Damien. She stepped between us, hiding me from the man’s disgusting eyes. “Damien’s a liar, Claire. Trust me, Alpha would never give that kind of order.”
Damien laughed loudly, throwing his head back. “If you’re so sure, why don’t you go ask him yourself? I’m sure he’d be more than willing to prove you wrong.”
Avery clenched her fists at her sides but otherwise ignored the taunt and waved a dismissive hand at him. “You heard the call. Get out of here now so that we can get ready for dinner. You’re wasting our time. You know the consequences if any of us are late.”
Damien snarled, knowing that Avery was right and he should leave, but not wanting to look as if he was taking orders from her either. He turned to go, but not before giving Avery a dirty look over his shoulder. “You’d best watch yourself, Avery. Associating yourself with the rogue is bound to make you a few enemies.”
He took off while Avery glared after him. As soon as he left and slammed the door shut behind him, she turned to face me, her expression filled with concern. “Are you alright? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”
Before I could respond, she gently grabbed one of my hands and lifted it away from my body so she could look me over. Her touch was soft and I found myself loosening the death grip I had on my towel.
“I’m okay,” I assured her. I let out a huge breath, feeling a bit lightheaded. “You came just in time. Thank you.”
Avery shook her head, dropping my hand carefully. “Don’t thank me. I shouldn’t have left you vulnerable like that. You were here alone showering for goodness' sake!” She seemed to collect herself and pulled something out from her robe. “Here, you should get dressed.”
I stepped out of the bathroom a few minutes later, dressed in the pretty knee-length dress that Avery lent to me. It was made of some kind of expensive fabric and was just a shade lighter than the midnight blue skirt she wore. She helped me pull my hair back and fastened it with some simple metal hairpins.
“If you want to stay here, I can tell Alpha that you’re sick.”
“No, no need,” I gritted my teeth. If what Damien said was true, I wanted to stare right into the Jerkface’s eyes and tell him to fuck himself. He wanted to break me, so I’d make sure he would never get that pleasure. “I’m ready. We can go.”
Avery nodded again with worry in her eyes, but she didn’t argue with me.
We hurried to the throne room, where the dinner was taking place. It looked like it was just minutes from starting judging from the dozens of pack members filing in, all dressed in collared shirts or simple dresses.
The large throne room had been completely transformed from earlier. Six chandeliers hung from the ceiling, brightening the room, and the plain wooden tables had been adjourned with delicate red tablecloths and gold-colored dishes and cutlery.
It might have been my imagination, but it felt as if the friendly idle chatter died down considerably when Avery and I walked in. We got several curious stares as we looked for a table.
Avery pulled me along beside her, leading me to a long table closer to the throne. I kept my head high, refusing to appear meek in front of the other pack members.
I gazed at the grand, empty throne for a moment, what Damien said haunted me, even though Avery called him a liar.
But what if Jared did really order him to harass me? I shuddered, remembering the sick twisting of my stomach when Damien touched me. Maybe trying to stay with Moonstone was a mistake after all. Maybe I was meant to be a rogue for the rest of my life.
The doors opened again after a while with a loud creaking sound. Everyone stood up. I quickly did the same, facing the door.
Jared strode in and my jaw dropped when I saw the woman hanging on his arm.
I heard Avery’s breath hitch when she saw it was the redheaded who had fought her in front of the entire pack.
“What does Amanda think she’s doing?” Avery hissed quietly to me.
She wasn’t really expecting me to answer, so I kept my silence as I watched the two cross the room.
Jared led Amanda to the table next to ours, the one right in front of the throne. She glanced briefly at me and her eyes narrowed, seeming displeased to see me.
I glared right back.
Jared took his place in front of the throne before gesturing for us all to sit.
“I have two announcements before tonight’s dinner.” The stern alpha got right to the point. “First, as many of you know, the number of rogues has been increasing at an alarming rate.”
A murmur of acknowledgment rose.
“We’re doing what we can to eradicate the issue,” he went on, silencing the crowd. “We must be more cautious going forward. Any information regarding rogues should be reported to a member of the council.” He let that sink in as he gazed around the room. “And secondly…”
I straightened, my heart leaping into my throat when his eyes found mine.
He paused and I stiffened, sitting up a bit straighter. His light brown eyes were calculating as he gave me a once-over. My heart stuttered nervously. Avery glanced at me in concern as well when she caught Jared’s look.He gave me a long look before facing the rest of the pack. “Needless to say, rogues are extremely dangerous and must be treated as such.”Again, his hard gaze fell on me and my eyes widened. “And tonight, we have one among us.”It was clear that word of my arrival had not reached many people, which wasn’t extremely surprising. Gasps and shocked exclamations echoed throughout the room. I ducked my head slightly, cursing Jerkface Jared to the pits of hell when a few members at our table sent looks of fear and disgust my way.All Jared had to do was narrow his eyes slightly over the crowd and they quieted immediately. “That being said, interacting with the rogue girl without my permissio
Her pointed nose was tilted up as she walked, but she somehow kept her icy blue eyes on me the entire time she crossed the space between us. While the other men and women at the dinner were dressed in semi-formal attire, Amanda took it upon herself to wear a shimmering blood-red gown that looked like it belonged on a runway. She was undoubtedly angry about something. Her black heels clicked against the smooth floor. Her fiery hair fell in luscious waves down her back, with shimmering pins holding a few strands away from her heart-shaped face.I hated to admit it, but she had a pretty face.I felt Avery straighten in her seat as Amanda approached. She tried to keep her tone pleasant as she smiled at the girl. “Hello, Amanda. Is there something you need from me?”Amanda flipped some of her wavy red locks off her shoulder before poking her lower lip out. “I just wanted to offer my condolences to you, Avery. It sounds awfully t
I shivered delicately, Jared’s voice seemed to echo through the small space of my bedroom. His eyes burned in the dim lighting. For some strange reason, I wasn’t afraid. A part of me felt resigned. From the moment I stepped foot on Moonstone territory, I knew that death was a possibility for me. Perhaps I had been lucky to make it this long. However, I also felt a spark of rage rise up within me. I tried to jerk my chin out of Jared’s grip, but he held me tightly. “If you’re here to kill me, then what are you waiting for?” I spat coldly. “Get on with it!”I swallowed as my own arrogant voice reached my ears. I regretted the way I spoke as soon as the corner of Jared’s lips tightened before tilting upward slightly. If I didn’t know him better, I might mistake the bastard’s sneer for amusement.Either way, I refused to break eye contact with him. If he killed me, I wanted to look him defiantly in the eye as he did.My coherent thoughts scattered for a moment as I attempted to glare at h
I should have known better than to trust a rogue, I thought to myself as I paced along the edge of the lake. She would apparently rather die by drowning than by my hands, which I respected in a way. I cursed again, even louder.I could have easily grabbed her before she dove in. She was quick, but I knew that I was faster. Why was I hesitating so much?I was just about to jump into the lake to look for her when a small dark head emerged from the depths.Rogue Girl shook her long dark hair away from her eyes and peered up at me. She waved her arm, gesturing behind her. “This way!”I blew out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. Looking in the direction she was gesturing, my eyebrows rose at the island toward the middle of the lake. Before I could say anything, she turned and started to swim toward the island.I hesitated briefly before jumping in after her.She didn’t look like it considering how small and frail she appeared, but Rogue Girl was a decent swimmer. She seemed to e
*Jared*Part of me was relieved when Rogue Girl announced that she needed to rest. I didn’t want to suggest it myself, but she was starting to look run down. The usual healthy pink hue on her cheeks had faded, leaving behind a pasty white. Her bright blue eyes seemed to lose their shine as well as she started to slow down. She probably needed more than just rest. She probably needed to lie down. I turned to order her to do just that, but just in time to watch her shut her eyes and fall into the raging river.I thanked the Goddess for my quick reaction when my body propelled itself forward. I cursed immediately after when the girl’s body disappeared beneath the surface. I had to sprint alongside the river to keep up with the monstrous current. I could barely make out her silhouette beneath the waves, and it was even more difficult to keep my eyes trained on it as I ran.I gritted my teeth before breaking into the fastest run I could muster, pushing my body as much as I could, allowing
Jared and I were silent for several moments as we stared at the wall of water. It was obvious that we were thinking the same thing. The entrance was flooded. We wouldn’t make it if we tried to swim through as we had coming into the cave. The distance had likely more than doubled due to the rain, and it would be entirely underwater this time. Trying would just result in us drowning about halfway. We seemed to realize this at the same time. My shoulders slumped in defeat while Jared’s clenched fists started to shake in anger.I was worried that he might actually shift from the rage he seemed to be experiencing.Despite the fact that Jared didn’t even seem to see me anymore due to his blinding fury, I walked up to him, which wasn’t smart. I should be worried that he could accidentally hurt me in this state, but somehow I was certain he wouldn’t.I put my hands up in a pacifying way.“Calm down,” I said in a gentle tone, but loudly.Jared finally focused on me and I was forced to really d
Jared lowered himself into a defensive crouch that still managed to look menacing as the band of wolves surrounded us. He stepped in front of me, shielding me from their view as best as he could. No matter what else he was, he was a good alpha.I peeked around Jared to get a better look at the wolves. It was obvious due to how scraggly their fur looked that they weren’t part of a true pack. Their fur color ranged from sandy brown to a dark brown that was almost black. The largest wolf, likely their alpha of sorts, stepped out of the circle.Jared’s deep voice came out as a snarl. “Who are you?”The large, dark-colored wolf smirked, showing off two rows of sharp, yellow teeth. He shifted back to his human form to speak. “Why bother learning my name when you’re going to die so soon?”“Because you’re intruding on my land without my permission!” he snapped, his voice a vicious growl. The leader barked out a laugh and looked around at the rest of his group, who started to laugh along with
Weightlessness. That was what I was feeling. It was a sensation I had come to embrace over the course of my life. Many chose to fear it due to the helplessness or lack of control it causes, but not me. I’ve found from living on my own that there were things that I couldn’t control, and the only way to not drive myself crazy or dead was to let go.Everything was peaceful here. No noise and no pain.I blinked up at the night sky. The moon was shining brightly overhead through the trees. I’d never seen the moon being so large before.I was following the river, allowing the tug from the current to guide me forward. I glanced up, locking eyes with a beautiful wolf. The wolf was a stunningly smooth gray color, almost like silver, with bluish tints to the coat.“Hey, wait!” I called out, but it leaped and started to run along the river, its long legs allowing it to bound gracefully through the air. It turned its majestic head to look at me, its bright blue eyes beckoning.I tried to take a s
*Claire*As we approached our camp for lunch, my nose twitched, taking in a medley of odors that didn't belong to Todd, Bryan or Frank. “Alan, wait a moment!” He responded with a nod. “We have visitors.”We slowed our pace and fell into a crouch. Peering through the foliage, I saw Frank's back was pressed against the tree where Bryan was tied up against. Next to him was Todd and Bryan. The ropes that had bound Bryan now lay discarded on the ground. They were circled by ten rugged scavengers, while two other were rummaging through our belongings."Thank Goodness you're back. Help, Claire," Todd's voice cut through the stillness, "Those freaking omegas, they are stealing our food!""Stay back!” One of the bigger attackers barked in a gruff voice. I assumed he was their leader. "If you don't want your friends to die."I shifted my weight, ready to charge. Despite them having a bigger number, there was no doubt in my mind that we were stronger and faster. Just then, Alan pulled me bac
I whipped my head toward Alan. Suddenly, the air was thick with tension. Todd locked eyes with Alan, neither willing to break the stare. "Todd," I said, tugging at his arm, trying to defuse the situation, "I can just stay here with you. Alan, do you mind hunting without me?" Not that I fully trust Alan, but I also didn’t want to fracture the fragile alliance we'd just build. Besides, Alan seemed to know quite a lot, and I was hoping to get more information from him. Suddenly, a glint of metal caught my eye. Alan's hand moved and a dagger charged toward Todd. "Watch out!" I yelled, adrenaline surging through me. However, the tip of the blade stopped right in front of Todd’s heart, barely touching his skin. "What’s this all about?" Todd inquired, his voice steady, remarkably unfazed compared to my own racing heart. His eyes remained locked on Alan, expecting an explanation. Alan smirked. He extended the dagger to Todd. "Take this." Todd frowned, but he still took the dagger. Ala
*Claire* After Alan mentioned that our potential threats from Reeva, Todd and I almost immediately agreed to the alliance proposal. As a token of good faith, we shared half of our jerky. “Bryan and Frank can take turns to carry Todd,” Alan said while chewing the dry meat, “Sorry, man, we broke a few bones of yours.” “All good,” Todd grinned, “I’ll enjoy my ride for the next few days.” I knelt beside Todd, examining his wounds and the jagged line of his broken bones. “Hold still, Todd, I need to align your bones.” Alan stood a short distance away, watching me. “You're quite skillful at healing. It's not exactly a common skill among rogues. Were you a born healer?” "Not exactly." I secured a sturdy branch against Todd's leg with strips of fabric torn from my shirt. “Then how did you learn it?” “I was once told, that as a weak and useless omega, I should at least pick some skill and do my part for the…pa, people around me.” I realized that I almost let my past slip. I frowned.
A huge rogue stepped out, his body marked by scars of survival, his gaze fixed on our fresh provisions. Behind him were two other smaller wolves. Todd’s wolf had jumped between me and our foes by now, his low growling warned the rogues to back off. I kept to my human form. Todd and I had a plan for situations like this. If attacked and one of us wasn't shifted, we'd stay in our perspective forms. The human would be the bait and play weak, luring the enemy into a false sense of security, while the wolf waited to strike at the right moment. That was why we always camped near trees with climbing ropes at the ready for a quick getaway if needed. In this case, I was the bait. “Don’t… don’t come over!” I faked a shaky, small voice, while getting my escaping ropes ready and started running away. Usually, one of the wolves would go after me, and Todd would evaluate the situation and launch his blow. However, none of the three wolves moved. The hell? Why didn’t it work? I gasped as t
“Wait a moment!” Kent went after me. “What?” I glared at him. He knew he couldn’t talk me out of it. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to stop you. It’s Avery. She just mindlinked me.” He paused, “Urgent.” “What happened?” I frowned. Ever since Claire’s departure, Avery did her best to avoid me. Deep down, she probably blamed me for everything, and she was right, I pushed Claire away. “She said she spotted Amanda and Damien together in the small woods near the lake, Amanda was arguing with him and mentioned something like ‘another vial’. Avery said she was going to tail them and asked me to tell you that…” Kent looked at me a bit worriedly, and cleared his voice and mimicked Avery’s voice “ ‘if the Alpha is upset with me, he can punish me when I’m back.’” “How dare she!” I growled. “You’re not really going to punish her, aren’t you,” Kent hurriedly defended her, “You know, she would never disobey you with ill intention. She’s just—” “Ask her to keep a safe distance and repo
*Jared*I kissed her hard, feeling the desperation surge through me as I hugged her close to my chest. I knew this couldn’t last. I had been through this heartbreak dozens of times already, each time more painful than the last. Some invisible force yanked me away roughly and I was forced to look down into Claire’s confused, but gorgeous blue eyes. Her lips quivered into a frown and I badly wanted to kiss her again so that the sad form would disappear.“I reject you,” I heard myself say in a low, cruel voice.Pain exploded on her face and large tears streamed down her smooth cheeks, as anguish and agony ripped my heart apart.Just as I thought the excruciating burn from the rejection was going to tear me into pieces, I woke up.I gasped and sat up in my bed, my whole body shaking at the nightmare. I wiped a hand over my face, groaning at the pounding headache that felt like it was threatening to split my skull open.
She tried to rip her arm away from my hand, but I held on to her wrist.Yes, I would have to let her go eventually, but not yet.Not right now.She took a deep breath, and then finally parted her rosy lips.“Good, you’re awake,” she said, her voice flat.I tried not to let my expression change at how calm and almost indifferent her tone was. She was acting as if she wasn’t experiencing any kind of emotional turmoil that I had been.No way that was true. I read the intensity in her eyes just now and when we were in the throne room. The pull between us was powerful, undeniable. She had to be feeling it, which meant she was fighting it.I didn’t say anything, just continued to observe her as she started to struggle in my hold. She refused to give in to her own feelings or the irresistible connection between us.Just how stubborn was this woman?“What are you doing? Please let go of me.&rd
I had subconsciously avoided looking at Jared ever since Bentley was dead because I couldn’t bring myself to face my mate’s miserable state. However, there was only so long I could drag.“Todd, give me a hand please.”“You don’t have to get up. Just tell me what to do … okay, fine.”Todd helped me over to Jared after he saw my stubborn face.I almost regretted it as soon as I saw Jared. His handsome face was swollen and bloody, and his eyes were shut. Even in his unconsciousness, he seemed to be undergoing a great amount of pain.My knees gave in, and I kneeled over him. Tears were already streaming down my cheeks as I dug through the medical pouch on my waist, thanking the Goddess that I thought to pack medical supplies.Luckily, his chest was rising and falling slightly but evenly, giving me some confidence. I brushed the tears from my cheek and got to work, using everything I had learned fr
Our enemies had gotten stronger. In the short time since our last battle, the Blood Moon pack had somehow doubled in numbers and were much less sloppy in terms of their strategy. We had to be steadfast and diligent as we moved through the trees.“Three men per group. One defends, one attacks and the third should act as a watchman for the group, focusing on identifying the invisible attacker while providing aid to your other two group mates!!” I gave my order, and within fifteen seconds, my warriors finished forming their groups.“Kent,’ I instructed my Gamma via mind link, “take a small team and stay hidden. We need to figure out what the hell is behind the invisible attackers and how they work!”“Got it.”Then we charged toward our enemies, me included.I fought alongside two warriors just like the rest of my troops. My role in our small group was the watchman. I took a deep breath and started
