Jemima’s POV

To my annoyance, Adrian wasn't on the training field when I got there.

As I tried to get my breathing under control, I looked around the field, marvelling at the level of concentration everyone seemed to possess as they trained.

Some pairs trained with weapons while others used their fists.

My eyes scanned the sea of bodies for Garrett or Piper. They were certainly going to have an idea about their Alpha’s whereabouts.

I felt a tap on my shoulder and whirled around to face a smiling Garrett.

Still annoyed that he had ratted me out to his Alpha, I didn't return his smile.

“Do you have any idea where Adrian is? He asked me to meet him here.”

His smile didn't falter. “And a pleasant morning to you too, Jemima. How did you sleep?”

“Good,” I replied curtly. “Could you please tell me where he is now?”

Garrett’s expression became one of deep thoughtfulness as he stroked his chin.

“I can't remember right now where he is but if you could give me a couple of minutes, I would ce

Jemima’s POVMy hands became slick with blood as I placed them on top of the deep wound.I tried to remember exactly how I had healed Garrett when he had been brought to the Pack territory after the fight, with nearly dismembered limbs. Adrian moaned weakly and my heart threatened to burst out of its cage in alarm when I realized that his eyes were no longer open. Quickly, I felt his pulse. It was very weak. I had to do something fast and I promised myself that I was going to kill him when I had found a solution. With Garrett, I had acted purely on my intuition. I hadn't even realized before then that I could heal. I was still trying to understand how I made it happen. “If you don't act now, he is going to die,” Kiona said, her panicked voice matching my feelings. I closed my eyes and willed myself to relax. Nothing was going to happen if my mind wasn't calm, that much I knew.“Focus on your desire to make him well again,” my wolf spoke again and I wanted to scream at her to be q

Adrian’s POVShe looked so frightened and guilty at the same time that I wanted to take her in my arms and never let go.Her wonderfully large eyes were filled with a kind of uncertainty as she gazed at me, waiting for me to judge her because of her mistake. I knew I was right to decide that she had to work on mastering her abilities. She obviously still had a lot to learn especially when it came to controlling her emotions which were supposed to be a fuel for her magic.“I’m taking this seriously, Jemima. I just don’t think you should be so bothered about this. The first thing you are going to need to learn is controlling your emotions and imagination.”Her eyes were suddenly filled with weariness and I moved my finger from her lips to cup her chin. “There is no need to overthink things. You can do this, I am sure of it. Power like this wouldn’t have been given to you if you weren’t found worthy of it.”She closed her eyes for a moment and released a sigh. When she opened them, the

Jemima’s POVIt was my first time being in his room and it smelled just like him. A simple combination of sandalwood and masculine essence. I drew my eyes away from the neatly laid king-sized bed and spotted the bathroom door. Adrian had agreed to wait in the living room while I cleaned up and I was angry at him because of that. It was annoying and confusing that I wanted him so close to me but also wanted to put some distance between us. “You are a nutcase, Jemima,” I said to myself as I washed my hands in the sink. “Just what exactly do you want?”After washing my face also, I walked out of the bathroom, half-expecting to see my mate sprawled out on his bed. Disappointment settled in my stomach at his absence and I felt angry at myself. This nonsense had to stop. He didn't look up the minute I stepped into the living room but I knew by the rigid way he held his body that he was well aware of my presence. “I guess training’s over for today,” I said, standing in front of him.

Adrian’s POVThis time, her eyes went round with fear as she whispered the words, “Three days.”Those days when I was terrified I was going to lose her were the hardest days of my life. I forgot to eat, shower and nearly forgot how to breathe. Thanks to my Beta and Piper, who were always there to reassure me that since she was still breathing and had a very strong pulse, she was certainly going to wake up. I strongly suspected that the use of her abilities on me had something to do with the seemingly never-ending sleep state that befell her, and I blamed myself for it. If only I hadn't insisted that she try to hone and work to control her magical skills, that wouldn't have happened to her. The first twenty-four hours while she was asleep, I had been with her. Never daring to leave her side. I remembered how I had acted somewhat distant with her just after we had finished her first training session and felt like a jerk. An immature part of me had been offended that she still was

Jemima’s POVTo say I was shocked is an understatement. Three frigging days of sleep!!! I wasn't some kind of sleeping beauty from the fairytale we were told as kids. I was a werewolf!“A werewolf different from the other werewolves,” Kiona pointed out. Her words didn't make me feel any better. It was all just so complicated to process. When Adrian explained that a witch had told him how normal it was for that sort of sleep state to happen to me, I relaxed a little. But when he mentioned that she was also connected to those who wanted me dead, I felt a chill deep in my bones. She could easily have killed me if she wanted to. I was in a vulnerable state. I needed to go to her for answers.“I believe it would be a foolish thing for you to do,” Kiona said. “You should be trying to avoid anything that could be a threat to you.”My wolf was right, but I needed answers and I didn't care what risks I was going to have to take to get them. After Adrian’s explanation, I was reminded of

Jemima’s POV“What are you doing?” I asked amusedly. I had just stepped out of the bathroom after taking my first shower in three days, only to find Piper trying on a pair of boots that Adrian had bought me a few weeks ago. She smiled sheepishly at me as she took them off. “I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist the temptation to put them on. Blame the boots, not me.”A snort slipped from my lips as I strolled towards the wardrobe to pick out what to wear. “But how come you never even wear them?” she queried. “I think they are just too fashionable to wear on ordinary days. I'm going to put them on when there is a special event,” I replied, pulling out a T-shirt and a pair of jeans from the wardrobe. “What special occasion would require you to wear boots instead of heels?” she wondered. I gave her a smile. “I'm certain that there are events like that. And again, I prefer boots to heels. They are more comfortable.”“Weirdo,” she murmured with a smile on her face. Jemima’s POV“I'm sorry but I still don't understand. You both are in love right?” I queried. She let out a snort of laughter. “If that’s what you see between us, then sorry to say, but you must be really naive.”My confusion deepened and finally, she decided to explain things to my simple mind. “We had this fiery sexual attraction thingy between us and he proposed that we have a no-strings-attached relationship. I foolishly agreed.”“Now, I’m in love with him but I know that he doesn’t feel the same way.”She paused to clear her throat and I could see the hurt in her eyes. I immediately felt sorry for her and reached forward to pat her shoulder. “What’s the point anyway?” She continued. “We are eventually both going to find our mates and this thing between us will become history.”Silence descended upon us and we both allowed our gazes to linger on the peaceful flow of the river. I had never experienced her type of situation but I knew what I would do if I were in her shoes. “W

He looked at Piper and his lips curved into a mischievous grin. “Or do you also want me to leave?”“Of course not,” she replied almost immediately and nudged me with her elbow. “We’ll be delighted if you can join us. There is more than enough food for the three of us.”My lips parted in shock and I turned to face with a look close to betrayal plastered on my features. Her eyes pleaded with me to understand but I was too pissed at Adrian to do that.I knew that she had no choice. He was her Alpha and couldn't get away with some things I could get away with. “Fine, then,” I said, “You two can enjoy a lovely dinner together.”I could sense my mate’s amusement as I scooped a generous portion of potatoes into my plate and added some drumsticks before marching out of the dining room.“I'm so sorry about that,” I heard Piper say to him just before I slamme

Adrian’s POVThose first few seconds had to be the most heart-wrenching moment of my life. I had sensed the previous night that she was up to no good and I felt pretty stupid for not being more alert. Why the hell had I fallen asleep? My eyes ran through the words on her goodbye, searching for any clue as to where she might be headed. And what did she even mean by she had to leave to protect me and the rest of the Pack? Who told her she had any right to just do that?If I found her, I was going to kill her myself. After hurriedly putting on my clothes and boots, I dashed out of the apartment and headed straight for the forest. It was nearly four-thirty in the morning, she couldn’t have gone that far. My suspicion was confirmed by her scent that permeated the forest strongly. She had been there and hopefully, she might still not have gone out of the forest. I remembered her saying something about the circle of stones the previous night and decided to check there first. Disappo

Jemima’s POVThe voice was very familiar, irritatingly so. Ignoring the pain in my hand, I brought myself up to a seated position and tried not to get carried away by the beauty of the room. For the first time, I saw the face of my attacker and was momentarily stunned speechless. He was otherworldly beautiful with his copper red hair and emerald green eyes. But unfortunately, he was also a scoundrel. “Why am I here?” I queried. “Weren’t you supposed to kill me?”The ghost of a smile hovered on his sensuous lips. “So you would rather be dead than alive? Interesting.”“Why didn't you just kill me?” I asked again.“I changed my mind,” he deadpanned. “You should focus on regaining your strength instead of asking me questions. You are going to need it.”With that, he rose from the richly embroidered chair and strolled out of the room. Just as I was still battling with the many confusing thoughts in my head, the door opened and a young girl who couldn't be more than nineteen walked in wi

Jemima’s POVI hadn't wanted to fall asleep but eventually, I had dozed off listening to the steady beating of Adrian’s heart. Thankfully, he was fast asleep when I woke up and it was still very early, about four in the morning. It was my opportunity to do what I had planned. As gently as I could, I got out of bed and searched his drawer for a pen and a piece of paper to write a goodbye note. Mentally applauding myself for not giving in to the temptation to give him one last kiss, I tiptoed out of the bedroom. My wolf howled in sadness but I didn't have any other choice. No one else was going to get hurt because of me.Sneaking past the soldiers who were patrolling the territory was the easiest past. I had been working on mastering the art of stealth since I was a child. Before disappearing forever from the Pack, I decided to pay a visit to the Circle of Stones in the forest. There must be something there for me. Something to help me overcome the hardships that were sure to come.

Adrian’s POVIn what seemed like no time at all, we were done with the dishes.“That wasn't so hard now, was it,” my mate said with a smug smile and for a brief moment, she almost looked like Sienna. I hadn't thought about it before but they had the same smile, especially when they were right about something. “Spend the night with me.”The words were out of my mouth before I realized it. But I didn't wish I could take them back. I wanted her in my arms that night and perhaps every night from that day onwards. She blinked in surprise. “Are you sure?”“Of course. You allowed me to spend the night in your room last night. I think it's only fair that you sleep in my room tonight,” I replied. There was a flicker of disappointment in her eyes and I mentally cursed myself for making it seem like the only reason I had asked her to spend the night with me was just to return a favour she granted me.Still, I couldn't bring myself to tell her that I needed her. I wanted her to move in and spe

Adrian’s POVMy body flared with desire at her suggestive words. I was tempted to take her up on her offer but knew that she was only trying to distract me.Something was certainly up with her. I could see it in her eyes.“Don’t try to distract me, Jem. No matter how much I want to be sexually intimate with you all the time, I won’t be controlled by that. Not especially when something is bothering you.”She smirked. “Never would I have thought that you would ever pass up an opportunity to be intimate with me. I would have to record this date in my diary.”“Whatever,” I murmured. “You will find loads of snacks in the pantry. There is even a tub of ice cream in the refrigerator if you like chocolate flavour.”Her eyes lit up a little at that and I made a mental note to stock up more on chocolate ice cream.“You are the perfect host,” she said, rising from the sofa. I mentally rolled my eyes. “Host? It seems too formal. We are mates.”“You are the perfect mate,” she replied with a grin

Jemima’s POV“Is that supposed to be the witch?” Piper queried, coming to stand behind me and then she let out a gasp. “Isn’t that Abigail?”“The one and only,” I murmured. She tutted. “At this point, she has got to be connected with everybody and everything.”I dragged my gaze away from the picture and my eyes found the desk close to the window. I wondered how I had missed it in the first place. As if the sheer number of books in the living room wasn't enough, there was another huge pile of books on the table. Piper followed my gaze and moved towards the table, muttering under her breath about how one could be so interested in books. She reached the table and picked up a piece of paper that had been lying on the book at the top. “I think this is for you.”Curiosity bit deep into me as I regarded the piece of paper she was holding up. “Thank goodness,” my mate’s voice boomed. “I thought the house had absorbed you two.”Ignoring him, I walked over to where Piper was standing and

Jemima’s POV“You came all the way here to find a witch?” I asked a rather grumpy-looking Adrian who wasn't pleased that I had insisted on Piper tagging along with us.He had thought that it was going to be just the both of us but I wasn't ready to spend hours all alone with him.I found my emotions flitting between sympathy for him, then jealousy and a little bit of anger directed towards him if I was being honest. It hadn't helped that he had said her name in his sleep the previous night. Deciding to allow Piper to tag along with us was to prevent me from spilling my thoughts out to him. I didn't want to come off as being selfish and insensitive. “I would go to the ends of the Earth for you if it means that your life will be preserved,” he answered in a bored tone.Piper clapped her hands in delight. “That's so sweet.”Adrian threw her a not-so-discrete withering look and her excitement instantly disappeared. I threw him a warning look and moved closer to her. “Just ignore him,

Jemima’s POVAfter Adrian had slept off the previous night after telling me about Sienna, I stayed awake thinking. I had tried and failed to fall asleep, so I had given up and paced my room, allowing several thoughts to run through my mind. It was obvious that my mate had allowed his guilt about Sienna’s death to eat deep into him. I could only advise him to let it go but he had to make that decision himself. No one could force him to. I felt uncomfortable knowing that he still hadn't let go of her but I also couldn't help but empathize with him. If something like that had happened to me, I might not have been as strong as he had been. It was a terrible thing to lose one’s mate and even worse when you are the one responsible for it. But still, I didn't want to have to compete for his affections with a dead ex.If only he could allow himself use our bond to heal. “You should also try that too,” Kiona said. “You still haven't totally let go of the pain Connor caused you.”I heav

Adrian’s POVI must have dozed off again because the next time I woke up, Jemima was no longer by my side. Her side of the bed was cold which meant she had been up for quite some time. I wondered if she was in the bathroom. I stretched and let out a tired yawn, feeling somewhat drained. It was part of the reasons I detested visiting the memories of the past. Memories that had to do with Sienna. With a sigh, I rose to a sitting position and my eyes went to the clock on the far end of the wall. My eyes instantly widened in surprise. It was almost ten-thirty. I wasn't supposed to have slept for that long. Jemima walked in just as I rose from the bed and the first thing I noticed was how sweaty she was. Her blouse clung to her chest tantalizingly and my eyes followed a bead of sweat as it rolled down her neck to disappear into her cleavage. She cleared her throat loudly and I reluctantly dragged my gaze back to her face. I wasn't even aware of when she shut the door behind her. “
