Dr. Modupe Bankole Williams always had her life under control every moment. She hated last minute plans, or people who arrived late to appointments, or even sudden rainfall in summer.... Well you get the gist. She never liked when things don't go according to her plans which you can assume, makes her a darling to her patients but a nightmare for the nurses under her.
Even her colleagues tend to walk on egg shells around her.
She never minded though, She graduated Magna cum laude from Brown University Medical School and was now an ambitious attending doctor. All twenty-eight years of her life, she had always been the minority as a colored woman but Modupe never believed in playing the victim.
"Never give up, never surrender" was her motto since she was a teenaged high-schooler. And even though it helped her become the Doctor she was now, it also meant she never allowed herself to be weak or overwhelmed which were useless emotions as far as Modupe was concerned.
It also meant she hated surprises,
Like the one her mentor sprung on her this morning.Dr Miley Evans her head of department and mentor since residency had called her to her office that morning to ask her for a favor.
The forty-something year old woman was sitted behind her table, her regular cup of mint tea in one hand and her spectacles balanced delicately on her straight nose. Her eyes were warm and kind as always,
Modupe had always thought that the woman's disposition better suited a nurse than a doctor.
"Dr Mo Williams" She called once she saw Modupe standing at her opened door, poised to knock. "Please come right in and have a seat. Have you had your cup of coffee today?"
Modupe grinned taking a seat "It's 9:25." She replied. Her cup of coffee had to be delivered ten minutes to nine and gone by nine prompt.
The older woman just calmly took a sip of her tea used to her ward's abrupt and vague answers.
" You asked to see me. " Modupe prompted when the other doctor just watched her while calmly sipping her tea. She didn't liked being stared at neither did she like wasting time.
" I did. " Dr Evans took another sip of her beverage and carefully placed the cup on her table before finally facing Modupe. " I'm organizing a team of rookie doctors and nurses to go on a free medical services trip. All expenses payed by Hope-Vision, I think you've heard of them? " She asked
Modupe rolled her eyes secretly. The woman was always talking about her charity work hoping to convert the younger into being a saint like she was. " Isn't that the Charity Organization you work for? "
Dr. Evans gave her signature kind smile glad that Modupe had been listening " Yeah. They are organizing this event to provide free medical services to places they are needed the most. Since the hospital is one of their sponsors, they've decided to make the final year residency exam an on-field evaluation this year. "
Modupe connected the dots in her head. That meant the resident doctors had to participate in this to complete their residency. Well, too bad for them. She would not like to be in their shoes right now, carted off to some country side or under populated town to work under pressure of a supervisor, using minimal and probably outdated equipments and working around the clock to pass. They'd probably end up treating more farm animals than people. She had to stifle a snort at that thought.
" Okay... " Modupe drawled out. " So, what has that got to do with me? "
" I have chosen you as one of the doctors in charge of the units. You will go with them as a supervisor and guide. "
Modupe watched her supervisor in silence for a few seconds hoping she'd call off the joke. She had always made it abundantly clear to her that she had no interest whatsoever in Charity work. She simply had no time for it.
" You are pulling my legs, right? " Mo asked with a grimace on her face at her supervisor's weird sense of humour and the fact that she had wasted half an hour of her time on frivolities.
Dr. Evans shook her head at her. " No, I am not. "
" I'm not interested. " She said simply and got up showing that there was no way she was changing her mind about it.
" This will help your career greatly Miss Williams, " Miley said in her stern voice.
That caught Mo's attention and brought her to a stop before she could stride out of the door.
" It would earn you points as a doctor, and prove your leadership skills. I know you want to climb up the ladder, Mo. I know an ambitious woman when I see one. And though you won't get payed for this, I assure you the higher ups are watching. Pull this off and you just might be one of the youngest Head of departments in this hospital." She leaned forward as though she wanted to share a juicy secret " I'm fifty-five retiring at sixty. " She said with a conspiracy wink and then leaned back in her sit cup of tea in her hand. " You're a smart girl, Mo. You know what you want and how to get it. It's just for a month at most. "
Modupe stood at the door glaring holes at the old smiling Doctor. The woman may look like an angel but to Mo, she might as well have grown horns on her head and a long fork tail between her butt cheeks. The Head of department was absolutely right but that didn't mean Mo had to like it. Why was she chosen anyways? Miley knew she wouldn't want any part of this.
Giving up on the silent staring contest, she pinched the bridge of her nose hoping she was not about to regret her decision. " I'll think about it. Where will the event take place?"
Dr. Miley Evans gave her a dazzling smile " Oh you'll love it," She paused for dramatic effects " Nigeria. "
" Oh, Hell No.
"Reservation under Bankole Williams? " Modupe asked the waitress that met her as she walked into the restaurant her father and his wife asked her to meet for their monthly family dinner that they were forever inviting her to.
" This way ma'am. "
Mo sighed to herself when the table came into view. Her dad and his wife Claire sat across the table from each other but held hands over the table and seemed to be having an intimate conversation as though the rest of the world did not exist. She really didn't want to be here. After the tiring day she had, she was physically and emotionally exhausted and there was nothing she wanted more than to relax in her bathtub and try that fruity bath bomb she just bought, maybe even have a glass of sparkling wine while she was at it. She definitely didn't want to be thrown in the midst of their annoying honeymoon theatrics, faking a smile all night and pretending she liked Claire for her father's sake.
" Good evening." Mo greeted as she took a seat beside her father.
It was almost funny the way they both started like a couple of teenagers before pulling back awkwardly. Claire was quick to cover her embarrassment with a polite smile. " Modupe. I'm so glad you could join us. " She said a little too loudly for Modupe's eardrums.
" Call me Mo." She corrected not returning the smile, she had told the woman several times that she could not correctly pronounce her full name but the woman was adamant.
" Modupe, We thought you wouldn't make it again today. " Her father said with a smile happy that she had even bothered to show up.
Modupe shifted guiltily in her seat avoiding her father's gaze. Ever since her father got married to Claire, she had begun to avoid him and they had begun to drift apart. " I'm starving, please. Let's order."
There was a very awkward silence as they ordered and waited for their food.
"So... Modupe, how have you been doing?" Claire said as a conversation starter when their food was served.
Modupe glared at her stepmother for using her name and then proceeded to continue eating as though she didn't hear her question.
Claire exchange glances with her husband and then sighed at her step daughter being unnecessarily difficult. The lady had refused to like her no matter how much she tried, she just hated her for just existing.
"Mo, " she corrected herself "how are you doing? "
"I'm okay. " Modupe answered only because she knew her father would get mad if she ignored his wife again after she asked twice and oh-so nicely and she was not in the mood to listen to his lectures. She should have just gone straight home, if she wasn't so hungry and exhausted, she would simply excuse herself and go home. She hated when Claire pretended to give a shit about her. For fuck sakes, couldn't the woman take a hint?
"You look exhausted."
"I know." She nearly snapped back at the pestering older woman.
Claire looked to her husband for help. Modupe watched them exchanged pregnant glances from the corner of her eyes. They always seemed to communicate with their eyes. Too bad she wasn't moved by shenanigans like these. She could never forgive them and especially Claire. They both turned back to face her seeming to have come to a silent agreement. Her father cleared his throat to say something.
"I might be traveling back to Nigeria." Modupe blurted out before he had a chance to say anything.
After considering her boss' proposal, she weighed the pros and cons and realized that she really couldn't pass up the opportunity.
Her career was the most important thing to her and she really had no ties to hold her here. Making that decision was what brought her to the dinner tonight, to tell her father in person that she was leaving the country. The shocked expression on their faces was an extra pro though.
" Modupe, what do you mean you are leaving for Nigeria. What is this about?" Her father looked alarmed.
"Is this because I....."
Modupe cut her stepmother off. "Don't delude yourself, my life doesn't revolve around the both of you. I'm going for my career. I'll be back in a month's time. "
Claire grabbed her husband clenched fist. She stroked it lightly trying to calm him down. For some reason, Modupe liked to throw taunts at that everytime they met. She had learned to deal with it, Michael hadn't.
"Would you stop by at your mom's?"
"No." She said simply.
Mr Bankole Williams took a deep breath breath before responding. "Fine. Safe journey."
"Mo, Mo, wait up."Modupe rolled her eyes recognising the male voice calling after her. The most annoying human in the universe, first a course mate at Brown and now a colleague at work. Will Moore.
She paused and let him catch to her. "Good morning, Mo." He said throwing an arm on her shoulders casually.
"Doctor Moore, we are not on a first name basis. " She said stepping out of his embrace.
Will Moore pouted giving her a dissapointed look. "Come on, we've known each other for so long."
Modupe stared at him blankly. She didn't know if he was trying to look attractive, was this look supposed to change her mind about the strict professional relationship between them. He only looked childish to her.Never mind that Will was a good looking ball of smarts, which he used to his advantage all the time. His unending flirting always annoyed her.
Will cleared his throat awkwardly since she didn't say anything more. "Uh, uhm... Happy birthday to you."
"How did you know it's my birthday?" She asked crossing her arms across her chest.
"I saw it on f******k." He grinned.
Oh, she forgot he followed her on f******k after he dared her drunk self to accept his request in a stupid game of truth and dare.
She had swore to never play the dang game ever again or drink in his presence. She made a mental note to delete him from her timeline. The one year was up.
"Stalker." She muttered and walked past him, leaving him standing.
"Mummy please don't go. Don't leave me here with him." Modupe cried clutching her mother in a hug as tight as her teenage strength could allow. "Please, please, don't go."Mariam patted her daughter's back returning the hug. "Come on, it would just be a few weeks and I'll be back. Why are you crying so hard? I already told you that I'll be back soon for you, baby."Mo shook her head not convinced. Her parents didn't know that she heard their heated discussion when she came home early from football practice the week before. She heard them talk about their divorce."I need to go home to explain to my parents that I cannot continue to live with a cheat hence the divorce. I'm also going to get my things in order so I can settle there permanently." She had heard her mother say as she came in through the backdoor since her mother didn't like her soiling the doormat with her muddied trainers. She paused mid stride as soon as she heard 'cheat'.
"Cheers."The happy group of doctors clinked their glasses of wine before downing them. The sat back in their chairs, chatting loudly above the fast Afro beat playing in the hotel bar."Guys we have just one village to visit and then we are done with our residency. Can you guys believe it?" Louis, a very fair, almost albino skinned kid screamed to be heard above the hubbub around them. "We should let loose this night. We never know, it may be our last chance to.""You're right, Lou. Once we start getting called in, we'd be way too busy." Shirley agreed clearly already tipsy. She suddenly got to her feet and flicked her long blonde hair. "I'm going to the dance floor, maybe check out some cute guys. You shouldn't wait up for me." She giggled as she sashayed down to the crowded floor beneath them."I wanna dance too." Roy called out before downing the rest of his drink. "Michelle, you're coming with?"Michelle blu
Mo avoided meeting Will's eyes the whole trip to their last location. He had been trying to talk about how she had snuck out while he was asleep after the incredible day they had together but she ignored him She couldn't face him, not yet. She still needed to regroup and refocus. She had to remind herself of all the reasons it would not work out. Men were scum as far as she was concerned. Her father was a perfect example of that. If her dad, her ex-hero could cheat on her mother in some "weak moment ", then Will who had always been a chick magnet would most definitely do so too. She was so scared of being betrayed again. She couldn't. Panic bubbled within her at the thought of ending up like her mother, the fear was like a wild storm threatening to swallow her whole. They arrived at the village in less than two hours, it was a relaxing journey thankfully and knowing that it was their la
"Time of death, 10:26pm" Modupe heard the words, she understood what they meant but it had not sink in. Time of d-death? Who died? Why? Nothing could shake Modupe out of the thick haze that fogged her mind. Not the sound of things being jostled together as they packed up, not the little howl that Roy let out from nicking his finger while cleaning up the dead girl. Not the loud cries of the baby in her arms. The little kid whose loneliness reminded her of hers when she was that age was dead. Gone just like that. Without her family any the wiser. Just like.... Modupe choked on a sob. No, no, she couldn't be crying. She never got attached to patients. Or anyone for that matter. "Mo, are you okay?" Modupe adjusted the baby into one arm by crooking her elbow, then used her free hand to dash angry tears. She turned to see Will standing behind her looking solemn. She knew that look, it was the detached grim face
Mo hadn't cried since her mother left, not because she considered it a sign of weakness No, it was not that. It was because she recognized the futility of said action. Tears never got anything done that would not have been done anyways. If you cried to someone and they answered you, then they would have if you hadn't. If they are not moved by your tears, then they never wanted to help anyway. Anyone that loves you does not need to see you crying before they come to your rescue was her thoughts on the matter. Her overwhelming tears and begging never convinced her mother to stay with her. And her mother claimed to love her. On top of all that, crying wasted your precious time. Time that could have been spent taking action and changing the circumstance that brought you to tears in the first place. So, did not spend her day crying and moping around. She didn't go out shopping and sight seeing either. There was nothing she c
Modupe closed her eyes and internally willed away the tears of frustration that threatened to leak out of her eyes for the second time in this blasted country. Shirley and Roy were currently being questioned by the police about what they had discovered. She was personally confused about what to do. How had it happened? The both of them of course were not guilty of the crime and knew that if the CCTV footage of the hotel hallways would prove that but Modupe also knew how messed up the country justice system. The arrested people first and asked questions later. So she had followed them to the station and had requested to be there when the two doctors were questioned. Which was as well with how badly shaken the both of them were, quickly wearing out the thin patience of the said officers of the law."Oyinbo, Abeg talk fast. No dey cry, na wetin you do make you talk." A police officer snapped at Shirley who was crying and shaking while giving her stateme
Aderele's story Before Makunde was born, his pregnant mother went to check his destiny. There she was told that her son, would be the death of her, unless she killed him first. She was so distraught and wanted to kill the baby but he was the only thing she had of her beloved husband who had died after she became pregnant. So she gave birth to Makunde and took very good care of him, pamper him so that he would love her.Makunde grew to be a great warrior and leader. He took over clans and subjected them to his dictatorship. But Makunde was ambitious. All he had was not enough for him. He wanted to be great. He wanted to be powerful. He wanted to be feared by all.You see, he stopped the people he conquered from doing anything but work on farms and bring him their harvest. He would take all he could from them and practically enslave them. The people had no time to do anything but work, eat the meager meals he gave the
The agent found them a three bedroom apartment that night, fortunately. Modupe was relieved about that at least. Now all they needed was to get a good night rest and a plan to prove Shirley and Roy's innocence.Once she was out of this country, Mo promised herself, she was never coming back. Nigeria was obviously injurious to her karma. However, to survive their stay, they had to start by surviving the night. Whilst Mo still had her reservations about the power of the said god Makunde and whether or not he was after them specifically, it was better to be safe than sorry. Will came up with a good plan, Pairing!Everyone was paired with someone else that they had to go every where they needed to with, even the bathroom. So she was paired with Michelle while they guys were paired together. Will with Bob, the most stubborn of the bunch and Jamal with Louis. They had snacks that the agent brought along for dinner that night since it w
It started like any party with the school headmistresses monitoring us all with hawk like eyes. Then in the night, It turned wilder beyond belief. The headmistresses had been drugged by Essa, the school wild girl. I wanted to impress her, so I stayed there, and convinced my gentler twin to do the same. The next morning, I knew without a single doubt that something... everything was insanely wrong. And we were imprissoned in a nightmare. I had to escape, and make sure that my sister also makes it out alive."... I promise you that at the end, you would wish that you were one of the ones whose soul was consumed tonight."
I apologize that this book is really short with less than 30k words in all. I plan to edit it at some point and make it better. I figured that a really long Horror book might be less interesting and would just seem drawn out. I've not read a lot of them but I watch horror movies so I wrote this like I would picture an Horror movie. I appreciate all those who stuck with me and read Reincarnation regardless. Thank you all. After saying this, I would love and appreciate your feedbacks and things to watch out for when I do edit the book. It would be really helpful and appreciated. Bonus scene ideas too would be great. Thanks once again.
"Are you ready?" Will asked Modupe."Hmm." She hummed and smiled up at Will who was supporting her frame. "I'm so ready."The duo and the two resident doctors stepped into the vehicle that had been sent for them. The flight earlier had been quiet while they all thought about all they had been through together. The project that they initially came for, their bonding night out, the incident that changed their whole lives and put them on the fast paced pedestal that was this past week.A week! It had seemed like a month, weeks, with all that had happened.Without doubt, they had all matured greatly and learned a lot from the experience... things that they were not going to forget in a hurry!Like the fact that... they could not deny the paranormal. After all, the lack of evidence was not the evidence of lack.Luckily, since Michelle was discharged and spoke to her parents, there was no need for
Mo woke up disoriented and with a throbbing head. Luckily, the sunlight was not in her face, so she could pry her eyes open. "You're awake, Good!" She heard a voice say from behind her making her turn sharply which in turn hurt her head. But at the new view brought two things to her attention. One, she was no longer in the cemetery but at some strange enclosure that looked like a cave. Two, the moon was out, which meant that it was night. With that realization came a sinking dread. It was nearly time for Makunde to kill her. "Roy?!" Last she was awake, she had seen him too and was wondering why he was still in the country. “Do me a favor, Doctor Modupe Bankole Williams." "Sure. Whatever you want." Mo said quickly. Anything to get him to stop crying and get them to the house with the rest for better security. Roy's eyes turned serpentine against her neck but she cou
Dr Gabriel Nwankolo walked into the ward containing the female white patient that was admitted the day before. It wasn't his duty to attend to her but he wanted to check on the leg again since he was doing his morning rounds anyway. He threw the door open and saw that she was fast asleep on the bed. He moved closer to the bed and kept his clipboard and pen on a table beside her bed.The wrap around her leg was saggy on the skin and he noted with amazement that her leg was back to it's normal size.Gabriel adjusted his glasses in surprise as though it would alter what he was looking at.He was one of the doctors that had attended to her the day before and he could have bet half his fortune that she would not have survived the night. The rate at which her leg was swelling and the pus... all that pus.... It was like her body was fighting an infection that was more than her body could take.It was truly horrib
This chapter is a mixed-up continuation of the two scenes in the last chapter so don't get confused. “Stay with me tonight, Will." Modupe said decided with reckless abandon. “Are you sure, Mo?" Will asked Modupe. Will had always wanted a relationship with her and she deliberately kept pushing him away and tonight, she realized that that was another one of her stupid decisions. She wished she could change that. She would if she was given a chance. Dropping her towel she practically begged. “Make me forget it all. For tonight." *-*-*-* The car drove into the city in perfect silence. The driver glanced at the White man who had fallen asleep not long after he had picked him up. This was too ridiculously easy. “Werey tun sun. It be like say he no sabi the pesin he don waka join for inside moto." “The idiot is even asleep. It's like he has no idea who he is traveling with in the vehicle."
A youth trudged over to the road looking weary, hungry and lost. It was dark all around from a moonless night and he desperately needed a means of transportation back to civilization. He had been running in the forest for over an hour haunted by the thoughts of his worst nightmare and now he was tired, dirty and afraid. He stood by the deserted road and stretched out his thumb for any vehicle that would possibly pass by. There would at least be one that he could hitchhike off of.He stood there for a while, ten minutes, twenty and maybe forty as the night seemed to become darker and darker distorting reality and fiction as he imagined what would happen if he did not get picked. As if conjured by his thoughts, a car turned around the corner and started heading towards him fast.He jumped into the road trying to make himself as visible as possible. He jumped and waved his hands several times desperate to get away from a
Modupe was so so close to snapping at Will if he told her to calm down one more time. It was not his fault that any of this was happening but change, surprise and the lot were not her cup of tea. And Lord knows that she had had enough of those this week alone to last her a lifetime. The flight she had scheduled for the team was supposed to depart in a few hours and Michelle was still in the emergency room with a group of doctors that had still not shown up after an hour. The situation and the feeling of helplessness was maddening to Mo and she could not stop pacing the entrance of the emergency room. She moved like a walking bomb and she felt like one too. If a doctor did not come and update her ASAP, she might just go off. And bring the hospital down while she was at it. She glanced at the closed doors and waited and paused and waited again and paused and over and over. Will came back with cold ca
They had an extremely busy day but by evening, they were all finally together and complete. To say that Roy and Shirley were traumatized would be an understatement. In fact, everyone of them were scared out of their asses but most of all Mo. She could not forget the sinking feeling she had all day.The fact that she dreamt about the baby every night and would even see the next form of the demon told her that she had a big role to play in this sick fiasco. That morning, the kid she saw was exactly the one she saw in her dream on the last night they spent in the hotel. And when she had yelled at him, he listened, albeit reluctantly and left. Just like that. Her, a mere mortal. It made her feel like a queen pawn! The mother of the demon was her best guess, which according to Aderele, meant that he would be going for her head last. But she could not tell anyone of them. She could not put them in trouble for her sake. So she had
