Chapter 1

"Mrs. Campbell, Mason is lactose intolerant. Why do you keep forgetting about this?"

The nanny, Polly Jackson, grabbed the milk bottle I had been holding while chewing me out. Ever since I started caring for Mason Campbell, whom she treated like her own grandson, she did nothing but criticize me at every turn.

She was more concerned than I was when it came to Mason. Whenever he caught a fever, it was as though the sky had fallen through. Polly would stay awake through the night taking care of him.

Armed with the excuse that she had experience raising children, she interfered with how I raised Mason. Polly took over the dressing, feeding, and taking care of Mason all around, simpering about how this would relieve the burden on my shoulders.

Polly was a single mom. After claiming that her daughter, Danielle Jackson, had lived a troubled life and experienced nothing but unkindness, Danielle followed in Polly's footsteps and moved into my house.

They called my daughter Griselda Jackson and locked her up in the staff's quarters, where the sun never shined. As she had been born prematurely, Griselda was weak. Even when she cried, her whimpers were soft and feeble.

Yet, Danielle found her annoying. Thus, she fed Griselda sleep medication and claimed that sleep was good for a child's development.

Although the Campbells paid them handsomely, Griselda was constantly deprived of food and drink.

"Since Mason can't have the milk, give it to Griselda. She's a month old now. Yet, she looks extremely weak. It's time to put more effort into caring for her. If not, others will think that the Campbells are abusing our nanny's daughter."

I glared at Polly, who had been guzzling milk. She stopped.

"That little wretch will be fine with some oatmeal. It would be a waste to feed her milk of this quality. At least I can take care of Mason after drinking the milk. Isn't that right, Sonny?"

Polly played with Mason and finished her milk as he giggled.

In the evening, I changed Mason's diapers. Just as I was about to throw it into the bin, Polly took it from me.

"It's just a little pee. It's not like he took a poo. It'll work just fine for Griselda. We'll save up diapers whenever possible."

Under my disdainful glare, she put the dirty diaper onto my daughter.

When Mason turned one, Polly got him a gold statue.

She said, "When you grow up, I hope you'll be an excellent wordsmith and a mathematical genius. You'll manage the Campbell Corporation wonderfully."

Griselda, who'd been born a day older than Mason, was still wearing his old clothes. Covered in dirt, she sat in the staff quarters playing with mud.

When I signaled at Polly, she threw a piece of cake in front of Griselda.

"You little wretch. Go thank Mrs. Campbell for her generosity! In the future, you must do everything Mason tells you, even if he orders you to die for him. Understood?"

Polly kicked Griselda, which made Griselda cry.

Griselda was just a little kid. How could she possibly comprehend what Polly was saying? Griselda could only stare at the cake while drooling out of the corner of her mouth.

Polly began nagging, "You must've been a starving beggar in a past life. Not only are you dumb, but you're also a glutton. Mason has more talent in his little finger than you'll ever have, you idiotic wretch. Why can't you read the room? Keeping a dog would be better than raising you!"

Instinctively, Griselda reached for the cake. However, Polly stamped on the cake with her foot before Griselda could touch it.

"All you do is eat all day, you disgusting glutton."

Displeasure twisted my features. "Ms. Jackson, I gave the cake to Griselda. Is that how you waste my food?" Polly would walk all over me if I didn't stand my ground as the lady of the house. Her eyes darted to the side. Then, she collapsed before me, trembling. "Mrs. Campbell, I'm sorry. It was all my fault. I shouldn't have stepped on Mason's cake by accident. I'll never do it again. I'm begging you, please don't fire me!" As I was trying to figure out when Polly became so sensitive, I heard someone roar behind me, "Daisy Jameson, you've crossed a line. Ms. Jackson has been working in the family for decades. Are you incapable of offering her even a shred of respect?" Zachary Campbell strode forward and helped Polly up. Then, the two of them brushed past me and left. It was as though he was Polly's son. I'd realized that whenever I showed even the barest modicum of kindness to Griselda, Polly would do her best to school me in front of Zachary. As the children grew up, P

Danielle's eyes sparkled after I spoke. She said hurriedly, "I've got time. How could I be absent for such an important occasion? It's Mason's parent-teacher conference! After all, Griselda won't be able to go tomorrow. I'll be free. Don't worry, Mrs. Campbell. I'll be on my best behavior!" Her helpless demeanor disappeared. Excitement took over. "Daisy, where would we find a family of such excellent helpers apart from Ms. Jackson and her daughter? We've got to cherish them." Zachary slung an arm around my shoulders as he spoke, peering lovingly into my eyes. I nodded politely. Danielle dressed herself in her best attire the next morning and dragged Mason out the door. However, he groaned when she touched his arm."Ms. Danielle, you're hurting me!" Danielle's expression changed. She asked anxiously, "Mason, what's wrong? Let me take a look!" She yanked his sleeves up and saw a faint bruise on his arm. As though she'd unearthed a scandalous secret, she shrieked, "Oh dear!

Polly tossed the DNA report onto the table and took a seat at the center table. Griselda's eyes were unfocused as she sat beside Polly, mumbling intelligibly. "Mason is my son. That explains why I've always felt this inexplicable urge to pamper him. My son!" Danielle's eyes were teary as she reached out toward Mason to hug him. However, Mason couldn't even be bothered to mask his disdain for her as he stepped aside to evade her touch. "Before we get to the bottom of this, Ms. Danielle, I hope you can preserve your decorum. Keeping your distance will benefit both of us." The people gathered there had been let into a huge scandal. "A real-life case of swapped babies! Even the powerful Campbell family failed to realize this huge mistake?" "I think that it's impossible that the hospital would cause such a mix-up. It must've been someone's doing." "Mr. Campbell isn't a stupid man. There's no way he'd ask his staff to swap his kid out, right? People probably know what's up."

The people in the room were stunned by the revelations coming one after another. Everyone only went downstairs to see what was going on when police sirens started blaring. When the lifts arrived at the hall, the police had put up yellow tape around the surroundings. It was over. There was no way anyone could survive falling down a building of 20 stories. Zachary broke down as he rushed over, wailing, "That's my daughter. Griselda has been living like a beggar for her whole life. She didn't even get the chance to call me Dad. She was only eighteen and died such a gruesome death…"While everyone still focused on him, he punched himself in a show of guilt. "It was all my fault. I failed to recognize you and caused you to suffer for more than a decade. I'll accompany you in your death right now!"A few people surged forward quickly to stop him. Zachary cried till his knees went weak. He only managed to stand up after two burly men helped him up. My calmness made me look downr
