Emily’s POV

Leaving the office immediately after our phone call, I drove straight to the hospital. Approaching the ward, the family were all there, and everyone, even Fred who had asked me to come, looked surprised as I walked in.

I realized then that it was probably my appearance more than my presence, or maybe a combination of both. Coming straight from the office, there hadn’t been time to change my suit, and no one had seen me dressed this way before.

Fred’s eyes fixated on me, and Nancy was staring intensely. She was summizing me from head to heel, surveying my diamond necklace and matching earrings with jealous eyes.

“Hi, Emily. Thanks for coming,” managed Fred after a few seconds, “Grandad has asked to speak to you, alone. We’re just on our way out, anyway.”

I nodded, and with that, the family exited the room. It was only after everyone was gone that Fred’s grandfather finally turned to me.

“Emily, my dear, thank you very much for coming to see me. I know it’s not the most

Emily’s POVMy knee had crashed into one of the pebbled stones. I had hurt myself quite badly, and a bit of blood was dribbling from the injury. Leon immediately rushed to me. “Are you okay, Em, I’m so so sorry! Do you need an ambulance?!” He cried out to me with a look of concern as well as horror. He reached out his hand to pick me up off the ground. Fred was standing a few feet away; a helpless stare on his face, like a cat stuck in a tree unable to get down. Ignoring him, I turned to look up at Leon.“No, there’s no need to make a fuss, Leo,” I stopped him, “can you go and grab a medical kit? I don’t want to move my leg for now.” “Of course, I’ll only be a minute. Are you sure you’re okay?” “Yes, I’m sure,” I comforted him. Leo nodded. He was about to grab the kit, but he suddenly turned to Fred.“And you,” Leon warned, "stay away. Don’t get any closer to Emily.” And with that, Leon hurried inside the house. Once my brother was out of sight, and earshot, Fred stumbled over hes

Emily’s POVAfter a few seconds of confusion passed, Fred’s weird question then hit me like a ton of bricks, and regret washed over me. My face turned flush-red and I hoped no one noticed.I wished I had never bandaged the wound in front of him…Of course, it all made total sense when I quickly realized why he was so shocked. Years before we were married, or our first encounter in the United States, I moved abroad in pursuit of traveling the world. After time in Australia, I hopped over to the United Kingdom. Falling in love with Wexschire, I decided to take a nursing course where I spent the next year. Our first real encounter happened here. Arriving at the hospital five years ago, Fred came in with an injury. As the nurse on call that night, he was assigned to me.I was the one who bandaged his injury. Fred never knew it was me who helped him. And if he did, he never mentioned it. Eventually, the incident had become a long-lost memory, until now. His words only panicked me for

Emily’s POVWhen will this ever end; is Fred ever going to stop? But I knew his temperament well enough to know that if I didn’t answer, he’d do exactly as he threatened. Instead of ignoring his message, dealing with it then and there was the best option. Dialing his number, his anxious tone shocked me, and there were no hints of wanting to argue. “Em, hi, sorry to bother you so late, have you seen the news?” he asked briskly. “Hi, Fred. Yes, I briefly saw the news an hour or so ago,” not wanting to let up too much. “But I’m really not in the mood to congratulate my cheating ex-husband and his mistress who ruined my marriage.” There was hardly any strength in me left to talk about his upcoming wedding, and with that, I hung up the phone, pulled the featherdown duvet over my head, and forced myself to fall asleep. Tomorrow is another day. Arriving at work the next morning, the whispers among the staff were hard to ignore. My secretary would know what the murmurs were all for. “She

Fred’s POVSince accidentally injuring Emily, I hadn’t seen her. My memory of those bandages continued to haunt me, and I sometimes caught myself randomly thinking about them. In an attempt to escape the nerve-wracking feelings, work had become my new best friend, well even so more than usual. Immersing myself in my job, I had spent the last few days at the office, isolating from the external news, and a little from the world. During another late night, out of the blue, a surprising phone call came through from my grandfather. Usually, our calls were business or immediate family-related. Plus he’d also had the recent health scare. But this wasn’t about any of these. He had demanded to know what was going on in the news, or as he liked to put it “this hogwash blasting through the television.” I had no idea what he was talking about, but he urged me to get in touch with our press team as soon as possible. More confused than I had been in the past week, I immediately checked my iPhon

Fred’s POVAll of the turmoil from the press and public opinion, not to mention the pressure from Grandfather, was starting to weigh heavily on my shoulders. I had never been an anxious guy, but I felt myself falling further into a dark pit these days. This incident had a significant impact on my family, not only me. The driver dropped Nancy off at her parent’s house; it was the best option for now. Grandfather’s words echoed through me again: I wouldn’t mind letting Nancy disappear from your life again. The last thing I wanted (and needed) was more trouble involving Nancy, so keeping her away from the scene was the only way forward. “You promise me this isn’t the end, Fred? You’re not going to leave me, darling?” Nancy asked me just before getting into the car, her face filled with sorrow. “Of course not, my dear, I just need a little bit of time to sort things out. Emily and I lived together for three years, you know that. I won’t let her suffer public criticism because of me…

Emily’s POVThe public news coverage was quickly extinguished and my first reaction was that my brothers had helped handle the situation. After a call between Leon, Richard and myself, I learned that this wasn’t the case, which I’ll admit, shocked me. Who else could it have been? Was it…Fred? It couldn’t be. Fred doesn’t care about me, so why would he have a hand in squishing a story that involved me? Plus, we’d just quarreled, and my last words to him weren’t exactly pleasant…This terrible attack on me should make him happy. “He’s probably too busy picking wedding dresses with Nancy, anyway,” but before my mind went down a rabbit hole, I stopped the flood of incoming notions. The next few days were busy, with one client meeting after the next, and tying up a few major deals for the company. I was grateful for the distraction. Now, a little downtime was in order following my latest successful negotiations for one of the AirLoft Group’s biggest projects to date. Amber, one of my c

Emily’s POVWaiting for the worst to happen, I realized this man’s fingers were no longer clenched around my neck. From the mixture of surprise and emotions, it took me a few moments to come to it, coughing as I caught my breath again. A shrilling outcry from the gathering crowd is what activated me out of shock. The next moment, someone gasped. As my vision settled, I looked around me to see where the perpetrator had gone but was astounded once more. Lying there on the ground next to me, he had already been knocked over, and Fred was standing over him! Why is Fred here?! “You better watch yourself,” Fred threatened, aiming at his lower body with his fists, “if you want to walk again AND not go bankrupt, best you walk away, now.” But he wasn’t done with his demands and commanded the man to apologize to the waitress immediately. Looking like a deer caught in the headlights, the man was frightened by Fred’s powerful threats and reluctantly apologized before exiting the bar.“I don’t

Emily’s POVThe following day, Richard informed me that he had sent someone to investigate David’s company. He said that even if it wasn’t the same “David,” he’d rather be safe than sorry — for the sake of the business. Calling me into his office, I pulled the leather executive chair around his desk and waited for him to share his findings. His demeanor told me that what he was about to share wasn’t pleasant. “I’m glad you brought this to my attention, Em. I don’t know if we would have picked up on it otherwise. Although it’s an all-round shitty situation, if this never happened, who knows if we would have found out the truth about this man.” According to our investigator’s sources, David’s company had been manufacturing products that had caused many unforeseen deaths due to quality problems. “I can’t say I’m entirely surprised, Rich, but how does no one know about this?” I huffed back, but Richard interrupted me before I could continue. “Well, sorry to cut you off there sis, but

Emily’s POVLeon called me out of the blue to tell me that David had been arrested. He mentioned to me that he would prosecute as the lawyer for the case against him. The evidence we collected privately would certainly come in handy. “See, I told you, Leon. I knew the right moment would arise for us to play our cards. I’m glad we initially kept our findings to ourselves,” I told him on the phone. “Yeah, I know, you were right, darling sister,” he agreed. “Of course, I am always right,” teasing him, “but anyway, now it’s time for you to shine, Mr. Big Shot Lawyer,” I joked back, although I had full faith in my brother’s capabilities. “Thanks, Em. Trust you to be my number one fan. But in any case, I won’t let anyone bully my baby sister and get away with it. David’s turn has finally arrived. I can’t wait for him to face judgment, and you get the justice you deserve,” Leon consoled, “also there’s something else…” Uh oh, whenever I heard that specific tone of Leon’s, I prepared myse

Fred’s POVHarry sat across from me at the bar. He had been staring at me intently since we arrived, and half an hour had already passed. “How long are you going to keep staring at me like that?” I finally had to ask him. “Sorry, mate,” Harry laughed playfully, “I’m just curious, what was it about you that your ex-wife liked so much?” His sudden out-the-blue question about Emily took me by surprise. What was he on about? I had taken time out of my busy schedule today to meet him here, but was he now just ridiculing me? I wondered if he noticed my astonishment. “Are you jealous of me?” I shot back, cooly sipping my glass of wine. At least the liquor was helping to quell my irritation. I had too much pride to let Harry know how much his question vexed me. “Fred, relax. You overthink things way too much, you know that? I would never be jealous of a man going through divorce…especially if he’s drinking because of love,” Harry poked back. “Aren’t you the one who asked me to come out?

  • Regretful Divorce: My Ex-Wife Is A Billionaire   Chapter 26-Changing Hearts

Fred’s POV“Ah-choo!” Nancy’s sneeze abruptly interrupted my thoughts about my trip to the hospital with Emily. It had been strange accompanying her, and something neither of us was used to for quite some time. Looking over at Nancy lying on the bed, today began to feel more terrible by the minute. Rushing back from St. August’s to my villa, I found Nancy standing in the pouring rain. As much as Henry had pleaded with her to come inside, she refused, telling him she’d wait outside until I returned home. It was in these instances that I slowly began to realize how Nancy was starting to manipulate me, softening my heart for her gain. It felt a little self-abusive to tell you the honest truth. But she succeeded, and I succumbed. If it weren’t for Nancy and my love for her, I would never have let things with David slide so easily. One of her recent requests was to help him out financially. It was a pretty big task, but Nancy had a way of getting what she wanted out of me. All I could

Emily’s POVWhile Fred was in the hospital in Wexschire, there had been a terrorist attack, and the hospital was caught in the crossfire. This was also the same day that Fred woke up.It all happened so quickly; the bomb outside, the screams and shrills from patients, doctors and injured visitors. Only just waking up, Fred barely had time to adapt to the light, let alone the sounds. I had been attending his bedside at the time of the explosion. As soon as the first bang rang through the ward, Fred flung himself over me, protecting me under his body, the infusion pump’s cords dangling off his arms. Suddenly, the ward caught fire, and my body kicked into work mode. After all, he was my patient, and he was the one lying in the hospital bed. It was my duty to save him. Discharging him from the drip attached to his arm, I did the best that I could and managed to pull us both out of the inflamed room, coughing and sputtering as I dragged us out of there. Fred’s eyes had been temporaril

Emily’s POVHarry’s confident stare began to irritate me and left me wondering if Fred knew any “normal people.” His flirtations were very obvious now, but I suspected Harry was only doing so to tease me and didn’t really mean it. After all, he had never shown any special feelings toward me on the few occasions we had met. But Fred had always been around, and they were friends. “Harry, I know you don’t know me very well, but there is one thing you should know … I’m not someone you can play with,” warning him. I wasn’t going to let him have it that easy. “I’m serious, Em,” Harry shot back, “and can I call you that?” “Give me a reason to trust you,” crossing my arms and looking at him, completely ignoring the last half of his sentence. “If I had to give you a reason, hmm, for one, I think you are very special,” he complimented. What a flimsy reason, rolling my eyes at him. Harry cheekily grabbed at his heart, as if my eye roll agonized him. Acting coolly, the conversation contin

Emily’s POVThere was no doubt that Harry had purposefully asked this question. He and Fred were friends, and besides, my ex-husband and my breakup had been splashed across the tabloids. He clearly wanted to embarrass me. The moment he leaves here, I bet the first person he is going to call is Fred and replay exactly what has happened here today. Despite him hinting that he knew who I was, I played it cool, using an alias. “Nice to meet you. Just call me Emma,” came my words in a quick attempt to hide my identity. Harry had caught me off guard. “Oh, is that what you go by these days? Emma? Isn’t your name Emily?” Harry teased, “Don’t look so nervous, Emma, I won’t tell Fred — maybe. Say, how would you feel about a drink? Both our nerves are shot from this flooding nonsense. Let’s get the matter cleared up, and then I buy you a drink to say thank you.” No thanks were needed; it was our warehouse that had flooded, not our client’s. But Harry was a smooth operator and was just using

Emily’s POVCursing myself for being so careless, I grabbed the keyring from Fred, hoping he had been too distracted to notice my Louis Vuitton. But this could be the opportunity I was looking for. Instead of explaining the truth, I went along with the charade Fred had created. If he continued to believe that Richard and I were an item, maybe he’d stay out of my life. My next words were deliberate. “Well, despite what you think, and what may or may not be the truth, I’m willing to wait for Richard,” my comeback hitting him like a ton of bricks. Fred had no right to blame me. After all, my love for him had been acquitted, and for many years. But that didn’t change the consequences of the past weeks. All he could do was stand there stunned. Breaking the silence, Fred continued, “But why would you want to be with a man who loves someone else?” That’s rich coming from you, Fred. “Em, please, I beg of you, resign from this job. I’ll even introduce you to a new one, one that’s better

Emily’s POVIt should have been a simple matter, but nothing was ever that easy with Fred. Not accepting the fact that I didn’t want him to drive me home, he persisted further. “But, Em, I insist. Or is it because you just can’t wait to get rid of me that you’re in such a hurry to leave me?” He continued. Giving him a wary glance, I didn’t answer his accusations. Fred’s unreasonable worries were becoming too much. Plus, I hadn’t been feeling well all day, and now, I was more than ready to get home and finally get into some comfortable clothing. It was never my intention to stay here until this late … All evening, the dizzying sensation I felt in the morning had gotten increasingly worse, but I had tried my best to act normal around Fred’s grandfather. ‘Never show your opponent your weaknesses.’ My father’s words rang through me; another one of his advisals he had shared with me. By now, the dizziness was too hard to ignore. Dinner was the first chance I had gotten to eat a prope

Emily’s POVFred’s sudden irritation from the news of my “marriage” was unexpected. Once our divorce proceedings were complete, we would have nothing more to do with each other. That day couldn’t come sooner… Who I wanted to be with was my business and my business alone. I’m so done with all this drama, albeit I had added slightly more fuel to the fire with my last message to Fred. After about the tenth attempt, the phone calls finally stopped and my phone was silent. Opening the drawer, I retrieved my mobile. The next moment, the phone began to ring again. This time, it wasn’t Fred calling. Hopefully, he had given up. A random number flashed on the screen. Maybe it’s a client. I better answer it just in case. Swiping open the call, Fred’s voice chimed down the line. He was using an unknown number; it wasn’t from his office or home either. Without letting him say anything more than the first hello, I got straight to the point. “If this is about Richard’s cheating, Fred, there
