The last thing Odette expected to see that evening was a ghost from her past.

She was at one of Anton’s safe houses, standing by the window with a glass of wine, watching the city lights flicker in the distance. The night felt deceptively calm—too calm, considering they had just dismantled one of the Sokolovs’ major trafficking operations. She should have known better than to think they could breathe easy.

A knock at the door shattered the silence.

Anton was in a strategy meeting with Damien, discussing their next move. That left Odette to answer the door alone.

She placed her glass down and cautiously approached, her fingers brushing the concealed weapon at her hip. No one should have been able to reach them here. Not unless they were invited.

Odette pulled open the door just enough to peek through. Her breath caught in her throat.

Daisy.

The woman standing in front of her was thinner than she remembered, her once-polished appearance now rough around the edges. There was hesitation i

Odette barely slept that night. She lay in bed staring at the ceiling, replaying every detail of her conversation with Daisy. Her instincts screamed at her to be cautious, but curiosity gnawed at her like an itch she couldn’t scratch. What if Daisy was telling the truth? If the Sokolovs were truly after her for reasons beyond Anton, she needed to know why.By morning, her decision was made.Anton was still asleep when she slipped out of bed. The safe house was eerily quiet, the only sound the soft hum of the city beyond the reinforced walls. She moved carefully, grabbing her phone and a concealed knife before heading to the bathroom, closing the door behind her.She hesitated before texting Daisy.Odette: Where?A response came almost immediately.Daisy: East 6th and Forsyth. 10 AM. Come alone. The warning from the night before echoed in her mind. The Sokolovs have eyes everywhere.Odette exhaled sharply, shoving her phone into her pocket. She wasn’t foolish enough to walk into this b

Anton had never moved so fast in his life. The moment Logan pinpointed Odette’s last known location, Anton was already grabbing his weapons. A gun at his waist, a knife strapped to his ankle. His heart pounded against his ribs, adrenaline spiking as he rushed toward the door.“Anton, wait,” Damien called, but Anton barely heard him.“She went alone,” Anton growled. “I told her never to—”“Then don’t make the same mistake,” Damien interrupted sharply. He grabbed his own gun, sliding an extra magazine into his pocket. “If you go in blind, you’ll walk into the same trap she did.”Anton clenched his jaw. Every second they stood here, Odette was slipping further away.Logan’s fingers flew across his keyboard. “I’m pulling traffic cams near East 6th and Forsyth,” he muttered. “The construction site is dead, no movement from what I can see, but—” His voice cut off.Anton turned sharply. “But what?”Logan’s face was grim. “There was a black van parked near the site ten minutes ago. It’s gone

The warehouse was dimly lit, the air thick with the scent of salt and rust.Daisy sat tied to a chair in the center of the room, her wrists bound behind her back. A single overhead light cast sharp shadows across her face, highlighting the fear in her wide brown eyes.Anton stood a few feet away, his gun still in his hand. His jaw was clenched so tightly Odette thought he might break his own teeth. Damien leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching with an unreadable expression.Odette had yet to speak. Her hands trembled slightly, though whether from adrenaline or betrayal, she wasn’t sure. Daisy had lured her away, handed her over to the Sokolovs like she was nothing more than a bargaining chip. And for what?Daisy swallowed hard, her gaze flickering between them.“Odette,” she started, her voice shaking. “Please, just listen to me.”Odette didn’t move. Her entire body felt cold, a hollow emptiness settling deep in her chest. The memory of Daisy’s voice, soft and coaxing, whispe

The safe house was eerily silent when Anton, Odette, and Damien returned. The weight of Daisy’s confession sat heavy between them, unspoken but undeniable.Logan was the traitor.Odette still couldn’t wrap her mind around it. Logan—the quiet, reliable tech guy—had been working with the Sokolovs all along. He had tracked them, fed information to the enemy, and helped orchestrate her kidnapping.A shiver ran down her spine.Anton walked ahead, his shoulders tense, his hand resting on his gun. Damien, usually one to crack a joke even in tense situations, was stone-faced. Odette forced herself to breathe, steadying the anger and betrayal that coiled tightly in her chest. When they entered the safe house, Logan was exactly where they had left him—seated at the small dining table, scrolling through his laptop, as if he weren’t a traitor sitting among them.He glanced up, his usual easy-going expression in place. “You’re back.” His gaze flickered to Odette. “How are you feeling?”Odette’s st

Logan stumbled as Anton shoved him forward, the weight of his betrayal pressing down on him like a boulder. He knew this wasn’t true freedom. If he wanted to survive, he had to prove himself useful—now.Anton’s voice was ice-cold. “Where is the hostage, Logan?”Logan exhaled shakily. “Not far. You’ll see soon.”Odette, walking just behind Anton and Damien, studied Logan carefully. He was acting cagey, but there was a hint of resignation in his eyes. He knew there was no bargaining left. The SUV sped through the darkened streets, heading toward the industrial district on the outskirts of the city. The roads were nearly deserted, lined with abandoned warehouses and rusted metal fences.“This is it.” Logan nodded toward one of the structures. “She’s inside.”Anton didn’t hesitate. He grabbed Logan by the back of his shirt and shoved him forward. “Then you’re coming in with us.”Logan swallowed but said nothing.Damien signaled to their men to spread out before they moved in. The ride back to the safe house was tense.Katya sat in the back seat between Odette and Damien, her wrists resting on her lap, the raw skin red and swollen from the restraints. Anton sat in the front, staring straight ahead, his grip tight on the wheel.Odette could feel the weight of everything that had just happened pressing down on her. The Sokolovs had faked Katya’s death to manipulate the Morozovs, and someone from Katya’s own family had betrayed her. The implications were chilling.“Who do you think it was?” Damien finally broke the silence.Katya’s jaw clenched. “I don’t know yet.”“But you have a suspicion,” Anton said without looking at her.Katya sighed, her fingers curling into fists. “I have plenty of suspicions, but no proof.” She turned to Damien, her ice-blue eyes sharp. “I need to get back to our father.”Damien frowned. “Katya, he thinks you’re dead. Walking through that door is going to cause chaos.”“Good,” she shot back. “Let him feel the chaos. He should have nev

The safe house felt heavier than usual, an eerie silence stretching between Odette and Anton as they sat in the dimly lit living room. Katya was resting in one of the spare rooms, and Damien had stepped out to take a call. Logan was locked up in the basement, left to stew in his own betrayal.Odette was exhausted, both physically and emotionally, but sleep refused to come. Her mind kept replaying the past few days—the ambush, her kidnapping, the brutal realization that Logan had betrayed them, and now, Katya’s revelation that someone within her own family had sold her out. The war wasn’t over. The Sokolovs weren’t done with them. She turned her head slightly, glancing at Anton, who sat across from her, his jaw tight as he skimmed through a stack of files. His silver-grey eyes flickered with something unreadable. He hadn’t spoken much since their return. Before she could say anything, Damien reentered the room, his expression unreadable. “You both need to see this,” he said, holding up

Odette didn’t remember the cab ride home. She barely remembered leaving the safe house, walking out on Anton, or Damien’s sharp gaze as he watched her go. Her body had moved on its own, one foot in front of the other, numb and detached, as if her mind had shut down to protect itself. The city blurred past her as the car sped through the streets, the bright lights of New York flashing like distant stars. But everything inside her was dark.By the time she reached her apartment building, her hands were trembling so badly that she struggled to unlock the door. Her chest felt hollow. Her throat burned. Her mind replayed the moment over and over again.“Katya and I have decided to move forward together. This engagement represents the unity of our families, a necessary step toward peace.”Odette let out a ragged breath as she finally pushed open the door, stepping into the quiet warmth of her apartment. It smelled the same—lavender and vanilla candles, the faint hint of fresh laundry. Odette had felt it the moment she stepped outside her apartment. The weight of eyes on her.A presence lingering just out of reach. At first, she had convinced herself it was paranoia. A trick of her mind. But as the days passed, it became harder to ignore.Anton was watching her.She felt it in the way certain shadows lingered longer than they should. In the subtle hum of something just beneath the surface. In the way her instincts—so finely tuned from months of survival—refused to let her dismiss it.And yet… he never approached her.Never confronted her.He just… watched. As if waiting for something. As if waiting for her.She first noticed it at the bookstore.A small, quiet shop tucked between a bakery and a florist. She had been running errands, determined to settle into her new normal. She was reaching for a book when a shift in the air made her glance toward the entrance.Anton stood outside, across the street. His hands were in his coat pockets, his sharp gaze unreadable. He

He was mid-conversation with someone, but the second their eyes met, the world tilted. She knew this feeling. The sharp pull in her chest, the way the air seemed to thin around her, the sudden weight of everything unsaid pressing down on her shoulders.Anton’s expression was unreadable. But his storm-gray eyes—they saw her.Not just physically. He saw her.For a moment, neither of them moved.Odette’s fingers tightened around the strap of her purse. Every rational thought screamed at her to walk away. She could do it.She could turn around, push open the door, and pretend this never happened. But her legs wouldn’t move. Not yet.Anton’s posture shifted, his weight moving slightly forward.A hesitation.A decision. Then, before she could react, he started toward her.Odette’s pulse spiked. Her heart slammed against her ribs, and suddenly, she wasn’t ready. Not for this.
