The safe house felt heavier than usual, an eerie silence stretching between Odette and Anton as they sat in the dimly lit living room. Katya was resting in one of the spare rooms, and Damien had stepped out to take a call. Logan was locked up in the basement, left to stew in his own betrayal.

Odette was exhausted, both physically and emotionally, but sleep refused to come. Her mind kept replaying the past few days—the ambush, her kidnapping, the brutal realization that Logan had betrayed them, and now, Katya’s revelation that someone within her own family had sold her out. The war wasn’t over. The Sokolovs weren’t done with them.

She turned her head slightly, glancing at Anton, who sat across from her, his jaw tight as he skimmed through a stack of files. His silver-grey eyes flickered with something unreadable. He hadn’t spoken much since their return.

Before she could say anything, Damien reentered the room, his expression unreadable. “You both need to see this,” he said, holding up

Odette didn’t remember the cab ride home. She barely remembered leaving the safe house, walking out on Anton, or Damien’s sharp gaze as he watched her go. Her body had moved on its own, one foot in front of the other, numb and detached, as if her mind had shut down to protect itself. The city blurred past her as the car sped through the streets, the bright lights of New York flashing like distant stars. But everything inside her was dark.By the time she reached her apartment building, her hands were trembling so badly that she struggled to unlock the door. Her chest felt hollow. Her throat burned. Her mind replayed the moment over and over again.“Katya and I have decided to move forward together. This engagement represents the unity of our families, a necessary step toward peace.”Odette let out a ragged breath as she finally pushed open the door, stepping into the quiet warmth of her apartment. It smelled the same—lavender and vanilla candles, the faint hint of fresh laundry. It lo

Odette wasn’t sure how much time had passed.Hours. Maybe days. All she knew was that she hadn’t left the apartment. The curtains stayed drawn, casting the living room in a soft, muted gray. The TV droned on in the background, playing shows she wasn’t watching. Her phone lay untouched on the coffee table, buzzing occasionally with calls and messages she ignored. And Anton’s engagement announcement still played in her head like a broken record.“Katya and I have decided to move forward together.”Odette curled deeper into the couch, hugging her knees to her chest as she stared blankly at the flickering TV screen. She hadn’t cried again—not like she had the first night. Now, the grief sat heavy in her chest, suffocating but silent.Amerie had been incredibly patient. She checked on her constantly, brought her food she barely touched, and tried to get her to talk. But Odette didn’t have the words. Not yet.“Alright,” Amerie said one morning, dropping onto the couch beside her with an exa

Odette hadn’t left the apartment in a week.Amerie had stopped forcing her to. At first, she’d tried—dragging her to the balcony for fresh air, suggesting a walk, even offering to take her out for drinks. But after Odette shot down every attempt, Amerie finally stopped pushing.Instead, she let Odette sit in her grief. And that was the problem.Odette didn’t know how to stop sitting in it.She had spent days cycling through emotions—grief, numbness, pain—but today? Today, something new had settled in her chest.Anger.And she wasn’t sure what to do with it.She sat curled up on the couch, a half-eaten slice of toast forgotten on the coffee table. Amerie sat cross-legged on the floor, scrolling through her phone and occasionally glancing up at Odette like she was waiting for something.Odette sighed. “You can say it.”Amerie raised an eyebrow. “Say what?”“Whatever it is you’re thinking.”Amerie clicked her tongue. “I was just thinking about how ridiculous this is.”Odette frowned. “Ho

Odette had one good day.One day where she forced herself out of the apartment, went to a coffee shop, and pretended—just for a moment—that she wasn’t drowning in heartbreak. But the moment she got home, the weight of everything crashed down on her again. Now, she was back on the couch, curled up under a blanket, staring at nothing.Amerie sat across from her, watching her carefully. “So… are we going to talk about it?”Odette exhaled slowly. “About what?”Amerie rolled her eyes. “About the fact that you actually left the apartment yesterday.” She tilted her head. “How did it feel?”Odette hesitated. How had it felt?Like stepping into a world she no longer belonged in.Like pressing on a bruise to see if it still hurt.Like wearing a mask that didn’t quite fit.She shrugged. “It was fine.”Amerie narrowed her eyes. “That’s it?”Odette sighed. “What do you want me to say?”Amerie leaned forward, resting her chin on her palm. “I want you to admit that you don’t actually want to be mise

Odette had expected the purge to feel like a clean break. She thought getting rid of Anton’s things would flip a switch inside her, that she’d wake up the next morning feeling lighter. But instead, she woke up feeling empty. She stared at the ceiling, her body unwilling to move, her mind foggy from too little sleep and too many thoughts.Who was she without him?It was a dangerous question. One she didn’t want to answer. With a sigh, she sat up and pushed her hair out of her face.Time to start the day.Even if she didn’t know what that meant anymore. The kitchen smelled like coffee and burnt toast.Odette leaned against the doorway, watching as Amerie waved a kitchen towel over the smoking toaster.“I swear to God, this thing is broken,” Amerie muttered.Odette arched an eyebrow. “Or you just don’t know how to use it.”Amerie turned, waving the towel at her. “Wow. Look who finally emerged from the shadows.”Odette rolled her eyes, but there was no real heat behind it. She pulled out

Odette’s hands trembled as she stared at the screen.“We need to talk. It’s important.”She didn’t need to guess who it was.She knew.Anton.Her pulse pounded in her ears, drowning out everything else. For a second, she forgot how to breathe. Why now? Why, after everything, was he reaching out?Her stomach twisted. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, but she couldn’t type a response. She shouldn’t want to.She should delete the message. Block the number. But instead, she just sat there, trapped in the moment.Trapped in him.A knock on her door made her jolt.“Odette?” Amerie’s voice was muffled through the wood. “You okay?”Odette swallowed, her throat dry.She had two choices. She could hide this. Pretend she didn’t see it. Let it fester inside her like a slow poison.Or—“Come in.” Her voice was hoarse, but steady.Amerie entered, already in her pajamas, her hair loose around her shoulders. She took one look at Odette’s expression and frowned. “What happened?”Odette hesitated.

Odette had felt it the moment she stepped outside her apartment. The weight of eyes on her.A presence lingering just out of reach. At first, she had convinced herself it was paranoia. A trick of her mind. But as the days passed, it became harder to ignore.Anton was watching her.She felt it in the way certain shadows lingered longer than they should. In the subtle hum of something just beneath the surface. In the way her instincts—so finely tuned from months of survival—refused to let her dismiss it.And yet… he never approached her.Never confronted her.He just… watched. As if waiting for something. As if waiting for her.She first noticed it at the bookstore.A small, quiet shop tucked between a bakery and a florist. She had been running errands, determined to settle into her new normal. She was reaching for a book when a shift in the air made her glance toward the entrance.Anton stood outside, across the street. His hands were in his coat pockets, his sharp gaze unreadable. He

Every rational thought screamed at her to walk away. She could do it.She could turn around, push open the door, and pretend this never happened. But her legs wouldn’t move. Not yet.Anton’s posture shifted, his weight moving slightly forward.A hesitation.A decision. Then, before she could react, he started toward her.Odette’s pulse spiked. Her heart slammed against her ribs, and suddenly, she wasn’t ready. Not for this.
