"Hey, stupid, wake up!"
Arth snapped his eyes awake, hearing Alice's high-pitched voice inside his room. She stood right beside his bed with both fists on her hips.
Arth looked at her, his eyes squinted. The morning light through the glass window kissed her long white hair and her light skin, making her glow even brighter. With that level of beauty, if only she hadn’t had this annoying attitude, she would’ve been perfect. Indeed, God had made no perfect human.
"What do you want, Alice?" Arth said in a tired voice, then he rolled on his warm bed. "The sun hasn't risen yet. Why so early all the sudden?"
"Get up, now. You're my subordinate for today."
Arth covered himself with his blanket, trying to get back to his sleep. "Can’t you give me a few more minutes? The training yesterday really drained the hell out of me. I didn't even get enough rest yesterday."
"Stop complaining and …” Alice pulled the blanket down to wake him up. But then her eyes spread wide open, seeing Arth without wearing any upper garments. His well-built chest and abdomen had caught Alice’s eyes for a long time.
“What are you staring at?” Arth immediately covered his body with the thick, cotton blanket. Then he closed his eyes to get back to sleep, saying, “If you want it so bad, you can just tell me.”
Then they all came again; Alice’s squealing rants and curses, all firing at him. It was supposed to be a serene, cold morning, but her mouth just destroyed it, like a huge boulder splashing down in the middle of a peaceful lake.
“Shut up and just go. I’ll catch up to you later.”
“Who do you think you are to give me such orders? You’re coming with me, stupid head!”
“Stop shouting, please.”
“I’ll never stop if you won’t get up. You think I’m stupid? I’m telling the boss about this."
Arth's eyes snapped open. "Okay … okay … I'm up already!"
Alice scowled at him, before she turned around and then stormed out of his room. Arth slowly sat up and yawned. His entire body was still aching from the intense training they had yesterday. He had missed a ton of rest last night, as he still had to finish chopping the woods before he finally came to bed. He muttered a curse under his breath, rubbing his messy hair.
"Hurry up!" Alice's loud voice outside had forced Arth to jump off his bed and start dressing up.
Rubbing his sleepy eyes, he stepped out of his room where Alice had stood, waiting impatiently for him. He just smiled apologetically, scratching his head.
"Because you’re very late, you'll clean the whole house today," Alice said, handing him a bucket of rags and a mop.
“Huh?” Arth blinked many times until he understood what she’d meant. “Did you just say the whole house?!”
With no reply, Alice walked her way towards the hall, so Arth followed her. He yawned again, covering his mouth with one hand.
"So you're assigned to the cleaning chores?" he asked as they climbed down the stairs.
"Cleaning, dishwashing, laundry, and housekeeping."
The sides of Arth's lips fell. That was a lot of work indeed.
They first went to the kitchen where they found Robert, cooking for breakfast.
"Morning, love birds!" Robert teased with his wicked grin.
Arth and Alice exchanged glances, both faces showed disgust.
Alice cursed, scowling at Robert like an angry squirrel.
Robert pointed at her face and laughed.
“Stupid big-head,” she whispered as she went towards the sink.
"Go easy on him, Alice," Robert winked at her, "My brother’s still a virgin."
Arth mouthed a cursing word, which made Robert burst more into laughter. Alice just rolled her eyes, washing her hands on the sink.
"So, what are my tasks?" Arth asked Alice.
"You'll start here in the kitchen. Make sure you clean every single corner before you move on to the living room," Alice replied.
Arth parted his lips to complain, but he didn’t have the chance.
"You'll wash the dishes also," she added. “Don’t forget the laundry. Wash all the curtains, carpets—“
"Woah … hold on a minute. Isn't that a bit too much?" Arth said carefully, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Why?” Alice took a step closer, lifting an eyebrow. “You're just gonna let a lady do all the work? Not man enough to be a gentleman?"
“Oooh,” Robert said, preventing himself from bursting into laughter.
Arth gave a sigh. "Fine, I'll do all of it." And so his task began.
When Alice stepped out of the kitchen, Arth caught Robert’s eyes. "Seriously, what's her problem?" he said in a hushed voice.
"Well, she hates you … obviously," Robert replied with a grin as he continued cooking.
Arth wiped the kitchen counter, then he cleaned the sink, then he mopped the floor, then he washed the pots and other kitchen wares, all things Robert had used for cooking.
It was a ton of work. But cleaning was not new to Arth, as he’d been the one who always took care of the house, living with the Chief back in Frostwood Village. It was all to return the favor for feeding and raising him ever since he was a kid.
After two hours in the kitchen, he moved to the living room and started cleaning. Alice was there, sitting on the long couch while reading some kind of a spell book.
"Not doing any chores today?" Arth made himself ask as he wiped the glass windows. “Not even considering a bit of help?”
Alice shrugged. "It's my day off … which is a very rare time I should be maximizing."
"What are you reading?"
"It's a book called ‘how-to-mind-your-own-business,’" Alice answered, not taking her eyes away from her book.
Arth stifled a laugh.
"Is there something funny?" Alice put down her book, seemingly pissed now.
"So you're reading that book, because you don't know how to mind your own business?"
Alice closed her book and then took a deep breath to calm her nerves down. "Can't you just shut your mouth while cleaning?" she said. "For hell’s sake, Arth you’re ruining my one in a lifetime day-off!"
Arth pouted as he continued wiping the windows. That after, he took his broomstick and cleaned the floor, then he started mopping. Cleaning the whole house slowly took all of his patience out, but he had no other choice.
He was washing the dishes when Luna came into the kitchen. She carried two dead birds, put them on the kitchen counter, and washed her hands in the sink.
"Hmm … seems like we have a new housekeeper," Luna said, grinning while she surveyed Arth wearing white apron.
"I can't believe her. She just let me do all the work without even helping," Arth grumbled, rubbing the dishes as hard as he could he almost broke it.
Luna chuckled. "She’s a stubborn lady, so just bear with her."
Arth rolled his eyes, wishing Alice would somehow consider being like Luna, as their personalities had completely differed from each other. Luna was calm, kind, and quiet—while that brat was violent, hot-headed and rude.
"By the way, where's the boss?" Arth asked, remembering he had not seen Lucas today.
"He went out with Janshai, I think. But he said they'll be back at sundown.”
"Is it just me or are those two very close to each other?"
"More than that, actually. They're like father and son. You see, Lucas raised Janshai when he was still an infant.”
"Why? Where are his parents?" Arth said, wondering where Janshai got his red eyes from. He must’ve been a half-blood too like Luna.
She was about to answer, but then, Alice's high-pitched voice thundered from the living room. "Arth! You missed a spot in here, you stupid pet!"
Luna tapped his shoulder, giving the best encouraging smile she could give. "Good luck.”
Arth stormed out of the kitchen, mumbling curses, and then entered the living room. Alice stood there, waiting for him with her arms crossed over her chest.
"You really like ordering me around, don't you? For heaven’s sake, I’m not your dog," Arth said as he went to clean the spot on the floor. ‘It's just a tiny speck! Is she crazy?!’
"This is to test your patience, if you don’t know."
"Well, if you also don’t know, I'm almost running out of it," Arth uttered in a grumpy manner.
“And what’re you gonna do after you ran out of it? Give up?”
“Like hell I would.”
Alice sighed. "Fine, if you can finish that, then I'll reward you.”
Arth's face brightened. "Reward?" he asked with his blue eyes blinking in excitement.
"Stupid kid," Alice whispered, shaking her head. "Meet me outside when you're done."
When Alice left the living room, Arth finished the rest of the cleaning as soon as he could.
***
After an hour, he stepped out of the house, then climbed down the wooden staircase. Alice was reading a book, seated on the wooden bench beside the small stables.
"I'm done. Where's my reward?"
Alice dug her hand inside her pocket, pulling out a small blue ring, then she placed it on his palm.
Arth’s eyes widened in shock. What the hell … was she proposing to him?
"Alice..." he said, his mouth froze as he couldn’t form out the words. He swallowed hard on his throat, cheeks getting warmer. "I'm not yet prepared for this ... do you really want me so bad already?"
Alice slapped Arth in the back of his head.
"Ah!” he cried, wincing in pain.
"What in the world is your stupid brain made of? It was the boss who told me to give you that!" Alice said.
"What? I don't understand."
"It's an arcane ring, you ignorant fool. Since you have very low magic circuits, this one will give you temporary alar, so that you can cast extra spells during battles," Alice said. "But it will eventually break once it's already depleted. So only use it in case of emergency."
"Cool," Arth said as he put the ring on his finger. It fitted perfectly.
"Let's go." Alice turned his back to him and started walking.
"Where are we going?"
"Hunting. It’s my turn to train you today.”
"But … wait! I'll just get my sword."
"No swords for this training, stupid."
Arth turned at her, confused. "What? How am I supposed to hunt?!"
"That's why you’re coming with me now," Alice said, heading through the depths of the vast forest. Arth had no choice but to follow her. Would she make him kill beasts using his bare hands, without any weapons at all? His Blackwinter had already been a part of him, so he couldn’t properly fight without it.
A few minutes later, Alice suddenly raised her hand as a signal to stop.
"You have to learn how to fight without a sword for several purposes," Alice said as she turned around to face him. "Yes, you're a knight and you definitely need one. But what if your sword is blown away or stolen by your opponent? Can you still win? Of course not. That's when magic comes into use."
"So, what do you want me to do? Flick my fingers and then all of a sudden a giant ice ball appears in the sky to smash down my opponent?"
"Stupid!" Alice said incredulously. "As what the boss has tasked me, I'm teaching you an ancient magic, practiced by the first Glacian northerners during the Age of the Empyreal Gods. This is the original spell they learned, after Glaceus blessed them with alar … Glacies Materia … or Ice Materialization Spell.”
"Ice Materia … what?”
All of a sudden, a white wolf jumped out of nowhere, attacking Alice right from the air.
Arth's eyes snapped wide open. "Look out!" he shouted.
It all happened in seconds. Alice raised her hand in the air, where a bright light shone, creating a frozen spear. She grabbed it, then drove its sharp point through the wolf’s mouth.
The beast hit the snowy ground, dying instantly with its eyes open.
Arth's jaws dropped, staring at Alice in amazement. What the hell just happened? He thought mages would need a longer time to cast spells … but that was ... incredibly fast!
"You see?” Alice tucked her long hair confidently, “No weapons needed.”
"How did you do that?!"
"Glacies Materia …" Alice said. "Ice Materialization. Want me to teach you now?"
"Hell yeah!" Arth replied, jumping in excitement.
"Okay. This is a common technique for everyone, but only a few can master it. It will take so much time and patience to create a perfect copy of a weapon with matching strength and durability. It’s a simple spell, but if mastered, it’ll definitely dominate in every battle.” Arth nodded. So those cleaning tasks earlier must’ve all been a part of this. She’d been testing him if he had enough patience to learn the technique. "Now, give me your hand with your palms open upwards." Arth did what she had said. A sudden chill ran through his body when Alice’s soft hand touched his. It was his first time to hold hands with a girl. To hide the awkwardness, he bit his lower lip and looked away from her. "Let's start with the basics," Alice said, not noticing his reaction. "I want you to create a small ice cube on your palm." "Uh ... how exactly?" Arth asked. "Close your eyes. Can you feel your alar within you? It’s the sec
"So this … this is them?" King Terrowin asked, narrowing his eyes, his tone hinted doubt. "We are a special elite unit, Your Highness. We will hunt down the traitorous elements that defy the ice crown," Kael said, down on his knees in front of the king. At his back were his four subordinates, all dressed in cerulean cloaks as their uniform, with a snowflake badge at the right side of their chest. Along with Tristan and Cedric were Dain and Ryia; the other two members. A short moment of silence filled the freezing air of the throne room. "I see no Grand Knights on your team," the king continued with his quizzical face. "I won't bother those fools any longer, Your Highness. For years they've been hunting those rebel guild but never succeeded," Kael raised his head to look at the cold king, seated on the Ice Throne. "I’ve picked these warriors for I saw the potential in their power and capabilities. We will not fail you." "As you s
On the snowy ground beneath the tree house, Arth was hitting the tree trunk with frozen sword, testing out its strength and durability ever since before dawn. Light fog stayed still on the freezing morning air. After giving another strike, the ice sword broke, shattering into pieces like window glass. Arth muttered a curse, scratching his head in frustration. Then he closed his eyes and cast another ice sword, trying to create a stronger material. As the weapon materialized, he took a grip on its handle and then struck the tree once again. The coldness of ice had made his hands numb. But that did not stop him, as he was desperate mastering Glacies Materia as soon as possible. The boss had told him that bigger battles were approaching fast, and that he would be playing a significant role in their fight. A few minutes had passed and Arth took notice of Janshai from a far distance, walking back towards the hideout. The red-eyed young man w
"Legendary sword?" Arth had known that they’re the highest class of weapons above the common, rare, and enchanted ones. The chief had told him that only six legendary weapons ever existed in this world, but he never knew that there was actually one in Glacia. Robert nodded. "The legendary cursed blade, Frostcalibur. It’s the only sword that can restore the Power Crystal in Glacia. But ever since the war, it's nowhere to be found until now." "What happened to it?" "When the previous king, Letholdus Aragon, died eighteen years ago, he lost his legendary blade. Some said that the king have sent it far north and made it hidden so that one day, one who's worthy, can wield it and reclaim Crown Galacer. Someone who has the royal blood of the Aragon family." "But is King Terrowin not his brother?" Arth furrowed his brows. "He's the only living Aragon today, right? So only he can wield the sword.” "Yes, I guess … but think about it. If K
"I am yet to be informed of your plans in this tournament, Sir Kael.” An old-looking but elegant man, wearing a golden tunic said as they walked on the carpeted floor through the dark halls of the castle. The chandeliers on the ceilings were out, and only the light from the windows at the end of the hall had shone the path. Large, old paintings hung on both walls, depicting the portraits of the previous kings of Crown Galacer. Every king on the paintings belonged to the only bloodline who had ruled Glacia ever since the beginning; the Aragons. Kael believed that the Aragon family had the strongest bloodline among all royal families in this world. They had their own signature, a vessel of tremendous power, running through their veins, which Kael had yet to witness. And that’s something he was looking forward to in the future. “Sir Kael,” the councilor called him again, as he seemed to notice the divine knight trailing off while walking. Two Grand Knight
"What the hell was that beast earlier?” Arth asked Robert as they rode their horses through White Forest. It was almost sun set, and they were now returning to the hideout from their mission in the capital. "I don't know bro. But I’m sure it’s definitely not a wild beast that followed us here," Robert rubbed his chin, thinking, "I think that beast was tracking us. It has some sort of intelligence … so maybe it has an owner." "Owner? You mean like a beast tamer?" "Could be," Robert nodded. "But the beast was way different from any beast I’ve ever encountered. It seems like it came from another ... dimension? I don't know. We'll just have to see what the boss thinks about this." "Then we have to get back to the hideout immediately," Arth told him, looking around. "There might be more beasts tracking us." They picked up their pace and then galloped towards the depth of the forest. It was already dark when they arrived in the huge t
For the entire four days, Arth was trained far more intense than how Chief Gregor had trained him. Most of his practices and exercises had focused on his agility; like fast reactions for evasion, and launching attacks as quickly as possible. While Arth had his training with the boss during the day, he was also practicing his ice materialization at night. Being desperate to master it as soon as possible, he barely had any time for sleep. Good thing, Robert was always there to spar with him to test the strength of his ice weapons. After how many days of waiting, the tournament was now a day ahead. Arth prepared his bag and packed extra clothes, since he will be staying in the capital for one day and one night with Robert and Alice. Lucas said that the guild had a secret chamber in the Lower Ring of the capital, so they would be staying there. After lunch, Lucas had called the team to discuss their final plan. Arth arrived in the meeting room, realizing t
"Hey! Are you gonna keep us waiting?!" Alice yelled with her usual, annoying voice. "Come on!" Arth sighed after realizing that the young man had already been gone from his sight. He caught up with the two and then they continued going straight towards the main road. The aromatic smell in the cold air had captured Arth’s nose as they passed by the flower shops and stalls beside the street. He suddenly remembered the garden he used to go in the Frostwood village. Even with the low temperature and the snow falling, the cyclamen and winter flowers were still in bloom. The group finally stopped in front of a two story building, its walls cemented and painted in dark brown. The roof was entirely covered by thick snow, and the glass windows had black curtains inside. As Robert opened the wooden door, Arth saw different shelves of clothing, textiles and carpets inside, making him realize that it was a fabric shop. The gentle and comforting fragrance o
It was a grand festive night for the entire kingdom capital to celebrate the crowning of the new king. Arth had never been to a big celebration before, seeing lots and lots of people. He was seated at the dais of the Great Hall with tons of food on his own table. It was too much at least for him, so he just sighed and then sipped on his wine, looking around. The other three kings had already returned to their regions right after the ceremony had ended earlier, as they still had other responsibilities to attend to.Now that more people were present, the air had become warmer, filled with loud chats and laughs from the nobles and lords while they drank their liquor. The live music played by the talented musicians had made the Great Hall much noisier.“So this is what a feast is like,” Arth shook his head, watching a drunk noble dance over the table while his fellows laughed and clapped their hands, “It’s &
“How is it, My Prince?” The dressmaker lowered his chin, his eyes looking over his glasses.“It looks wonderful, sir. Thank you,” Arth said as he surveyed himself in front of the mirror. He wore a knee-length blue tunic of golden beadings. Beneath it was his white inner garment with two buttons undone to reveal his chest, tucked in his straight-cut black trousers.“Are you certain you do not want any jewelry, Your Highness? It’ll make you look more glamorous in the ceremony later,” the man said. “We have five boxes for you to choose from … some fine gold necklaces and diamond rings—”“It’s all good.” Arth smiled at the dressmaker and then looked again at the mirror as a servant was oiling his newly-cut black hair. The door of the dressing room suddenly opened.Looking through the mi
Arth cried and screamed from the pain … as the cold, rough earth was crushing his body in between. He exerted his arms, pushing both sides to prevent the ground from squeezing him, but hopeless it was … as it only made him bleed more, caused by the sharp stones against his skin.“Have no worries, for I shall take good care of your lands and—”Dethnar’s voice stopped as well as the ground, then followed by the demon cursing.“What’s … happening … now …?” Arth’s eyes fell heavier, but he still kept his consciousness.“You’re … a … demon …?! What are you?!” Dethnar spoke again from above, his voice shaking and mad. “You traitor! You are one of us … and yet—”“And you are a fool …”Arth
“The Demon King had ordered me to initiate the war by destroying the Power Crystal in the North,” Dethnar said, dark-blue flames covering his entire demon form. “This undead army of mine is just the beginning. After getting rid of the crystal I can now—”“I never asked for you to babble about your stupid plans, demon,” Arth cut him off. “You won’t be able to execute any of that. Now that you’re separated from Lucas, I can finally eliminate you from our world.”“Eliminate me?” Dethnar smiled wider in amusement. “You think you can beat me in my true form? You can’t even make a scratch.”“We’ll see,” Arth replied, then he closed his eyes and took a deep breath.‘This is it, father,’he thought.‘I’ll show them the true power of our
Draphiron’s wings created a powerful gust of wind on the high tower as its claws held on to the pillars, and then lowered its long neck for Arth to climb down. The dragon’s remaining alar, in the form of a blue spirit, had helped him reach Crown Galacer in a short time.“Thanks, Draphiron … thank you, father,” Arth whispered, rubbing the dragon’s neck before he jumped off and landed on the floor. The blue spirit slowly dissolved into strings of alar, flying away from the tower, then they all compressed together and finally exploded in the skies like fireworks.Arth turned around, studying the situation now. The first thing he saw was the cracked Power Crystal … with tiny fragments scattered on the floor. Nearly destroyed it was … that Divine Knight must’ve stopped the demon before it could shatter the crystal. Kael did his job well enough, holding off the demon befo
After rushing out of the dungeon, Kael led the whole group inside the citadel, sneaking, as they did not want to catch the attention of the ghouls scurrying on the palace grounds … and the undead beasts flying above.A symphony of darkness and silence welcomed them … and it was a bit strange as to why Kael found no ghouls inside. The armory was located on the third floor of the citadel, so they had to use the wide staircases. As they made their climb, they tried to keep the silence, but Kael was annoyed by the Chief’s son who kept on whispering to Gregor. Had Gregor not taught his son how to keep his mouth shut? When they reached the armory, Gregor and his son quickly got their swords back. “Where are we going now?” the Chief asked Kael as they stepped out of the armory.“The throne room,” Kael replied. They got back to the staircases and clim
“Are you sure about this? What if they attack Cold Hills?” Tristan asked as they rode their horses, the west gate of the kingdom capital rising from their view ahead. It was a half-day journey from Cold Hills after they spotted the blue beam piercing through the skies, coming from the far north.“Don’t worry,” Kael replied. “Our village will be fine. The winterbird from the citadel said that the enemies were only attacking straight towards the capital.”As they reached the western gatehouse, Kael could still see the destroyed portcullis he had caused by the explosion two days ago. He raised his head to the top of the curtain walls and found no knights on watch anymoreThe fort bell kept on ringing, like repeating thunder amidst the dark clouds; the alarm for evacuation. The skies had already turned dark … wind blowing hard against his face, carrying the scent
“No …” Once again he burst into tears, leaning his forehead on the cold floor.“I failed … all because of me … all because of my stupidity!”Arth could no longer see any hope of saving Glacia. His body was too exhausted, worn out to go after Lucas and stop him. He could not even stand a chance now that Lucas had the sword and the power of its curse. No one could stop him now. And even if there was someone, Arth was already tired of hoping.“So all of our efforts are wasted … our accomplishments with the team … with Alice … all are wasted for his selfish ambitions?!” Arth said to himself as he hit his own forehead against the floor. “Alice died for nothing …
“Watch out, boss!” Arth yelled. But before the claw of the dragon could strike, Lucas made a high jump to dodge. He waved his sword to land a quick slash, aiming at the beast’s head, but then it ducked and spun its enormous body, swinging its huge tail to strike him. Lucas couldn’t move, as he’s still on air, so he had no other choice but to block the tail with his arms crossed. The direct hit blasted Lucas away, slamming him against the stone wall, only to fall on the floor, coughing blood, leaving the wall cracked.Arth held his sword tighter. Despite its enormous size, Draphiron was undeniably fast.Even Arth himself couldn’t possibly react in time had he been in Lucas’ situation earlier.“Why does it keep on attacking us?!” Arth shouted. No … Why would it keep on attacking only Lucas? Not Arth … or J
