"What the hell was that beast earlier?” Arth asked Robert as they rode their horses through White Forest. It was almost sun set, and they were now returning to the hideout from their mission in the capital.
"I don't know bro. But I’m sure it’s definitely not a wild beast that followed us here," Robert rubbed his chin, thinking, "I think that beast was tracking us. It has some sort of intelligence … so maybe it has an owner."
"Owner? You mean like a beast tamer?"
"Could be," Robert nodded. "But the beast was way different from any beast I’ve ever encountered. It seems like it came from another ... dimension? I don't know. We'll just have to see what the boss thinks about this."
"Then we have to get back to the hideout immediately," Arth told him, looking around. "There might be more beasts tracking us."
They picked up their pace and then galloped towards the depth of the forest. It was already dark when they arrived in the huge tree house. They settled their horses and then went up on the staircases. A warm, delicious scent welcomed the two as they went inside. Arth knew that it was already dinner time, so they walked straight inside the dining area. There, the whole team was on the table, eating dinner.
"You're back early," Alice said, raising a brow. She was not wearing her glasses now, and her white, long hair was tied up in a ponytail.
Arth smiled awkwardly at her, then avoided her gaze. ‘Seriously, why is she giving me that weird look?’ he thought.
"We've got terrible news, boss," Robert spoke in a sudden serious tone.
The people at the table all turned their heads, waiting for him to say something. But Robert did not continue. Instead, he rubbed his growling stomach while looking at the plates on the table. "But first, I need to fill my tummy. I’m starving!"
Lucas shook his head, sipping on his cup of wine. Robert went to his chair and then munched the Custarde served in front of him. “Wow, who cooked this? This is so good.”
“Me,” Alice said, raising her chin proudly.
“Oh, really?” Robert replied. “Well, it does leave a bad aftertaste.”
“If you don’t like it, then why are you still eating?”
Arth sighed as the two continued to argue. He sat on his chair between Robert and Luna.
Looking at Lucas made Arth remember what Robert had told him earlier; about the boss searching for the cursed blade. It’s the only thing that bothered him ever since they traveled back to their hideout. He wanted to ask Lucas about it, but he knew better, as it was not the perfect time.
A few minutes had passed and Robert finally finished. Lucas had been staring at him the whole time, waiting for his report.
"Alright, Robert. Now tell me everything," Lucas said.
“You won’t believe this boss.” Robert began reporting about the High Councilor holding a tournament five days from now. He also told the boss of what they had heard about the Frostguarde.
"So they've been gathered already?" Lucas's eyes were a bit surprised, but he still managed to keep his calm, serious expression.
"You know them, boss?" Alice asked him.
"It's just as what I've heard from one of my men working in the castle," Lucas replied while narrowing his eyes at his wine.
Arth furrowed his brows. One of his men? Did the boss have spies in the citadel too? That must’ve been why he knew almost about everything that’s happening in the capital.
"The Gand Knight from the alehouse was one of the guards of our target. He mentioned that the Frostguarde will be there in the tournament," Robert added. "What do you think, boss?"
"This isn't any ordinary tournament, I’m certain of it." Lucas shook his head, looking at his wine. "They want to lure us in."
"Just as I thought,” Alice added.
"They must’ve already found out about our next target," Lucas replied. "Kael really knows how to play the game with me."
"So you're saying it's a trap," Arth told the boss.
"Yes. However, we can't let this opportunity go. If all of his team will be there, then we have to make a plan, since we only need the councilor’s head. We can't fight them head-on this time, while we still don't know yet about the enemies that we're up against.”
"I agree, boss. It's better if we gather more information first about this … Frostguarde team," Alice replied.
"Anything else?" Lucas asked the two young men.
Robert and Arth suddenly exchanged worried glances. "Actually, boss… I think bro and I were being tracked earlier on our way here.”
Lucas’ face darkened. "What happened?"
"When we entered White Forest, we spotted a beast we’ve never ever seen before. It kept on following our tracks on the ground. But we managed to hide ourselves on the branches of the trees, so it never found us.”
“Cowards,” Janshai spat. “Hiding from a beast when you can just kill it? And you call yourselves as members of this guild?”
“Yeah, you both are weaklings,” Alice added, finally having her turn to tease Robert.
“It was Robert’s idea,” Arth said.
Robert crossed his arms and rolled his eyes. “Whatever.”
"Describe the beast," Luna said, facing Robert. "I might've seen it already while scouting the forest."
Robert looked at the ceiling, rubbing his chin. "The beast had rough, red skin, and its body was like a huge lizard. It had sharp teeth, and its long tongue was out, panting like a dog. It had no eyes but its nose was pointy, which perhaps was used to track our scent."
“You’re referring to a beast coming from the Underworld," Lucas said, putting down his cup.
"The Underworld?" Arth asked. "How is that possible?"
"I'm certain that it had an owner, so it’s probably summoned," Lucas replied, thinking. "A summoner from the capital might be tracking us down."
"Summoner?"
"It's one of the classifications of mages," Alice pointed out. "They specialized in using spells to open portals from different dimensions to summon beasts … but only for a limited time."
"I’m pretty sure it’s one of the members of the Frostguarde," Robert said.
Lucas nodded. "Luna, make the most of your time scouting the west entrance of the forest. That beast might come back … and perhaps with the summoner this time."
"Got it, boss," Luna said.
"We will discuss our plan about this upcoming tournament tomorrow … any questions? Alright, you're dismissed," Lucas said. "Arth, you stay."
Arth looked at the boss, eyebrows storming, but he just nodded in response. The team stood up, picked up their plates, and walked out, leaving Arth and Lucas on the dining.
"Am I in trouble?" Arth said carefully, nervous of the quiet air between them.
Lucas poured another cup of wine and then gave it to Arth. "How was your training with Alice?" he asked. "Had she already taught you that magic spell?"
"Glacies Materia, you mean?" Arth said. "Well, I've been practicing for days, and I think they're already strong enough to be used against beasts."
“You’re learning fast,” Lucas nodded slowly. “I knew that the spell is beyond suitable for you. And I’m certain you will find it very useful in your future battles …” Then he let out a huge breath. “If only I am able to master that skill.”
“What do you mean, boss?”
“Alice had already told you, hadn’t she? Only a few percent of the population can master the arts of ice materialization. It’s an ancient skill, Arth, a signature of the elemental power of the northern people; the element of ice.”
Arth sipped on his wine, wondering. So boss could not use the skill at all?
After a short moment of silence, Lucas spoke again. "Anyway, Arth, you will join the upcoming tournament."
Arth suddenly choked on the wine he was drinking. He wiped his mouth, coughing hard. "What? Why me, boss?"
"Because you will be the one who will eliminate our target," Lucas replied as a matter-of-factly. "Robert and Alice will be with the audience to watch the tournament. They will cover you if anything happens."
"Why not Janshai or ... or … Luna?" Arth said, his pitch now higher than normal.
"Luna and I are on the wanted posters, and Janshai can’t go. The people will get suspicious of his red-eyes. I know that the arena is only found in the Lower Ring, but I’m certain they will have very tight security inside," Lucas explained. "Your job is to win the tournament and assassinate the councilor as seamless as possible without getting caught—"
"Wait, boss, is that even possible?!" Arth held his chest. "I'm not even sure if I can win that tournament!"
"Trust in your skills, Arth, and apply what we've taught you these last few days. You have to win it, so you can get closer to the councilor without anyone getting suspicious," Lucas told him. "Don't worry. If something happens, Robert and Alice will be there."
Arth pursed his lips, his gaze dropped to his wine.
"You go and rest now,” Lucas stood from his seat, “We’ll be having an intense training first thing tomorrow morning."
After washing his own plate, Arth immediately returned to his bedroom. He hung his sword at the back of the door and then dropped himself on his soft, white bed. It was such a long day for him. A lot of things happened, and a lot of thoughts were going through his mind, making him still awake at night for hours. For hours, his gaze was on the wooden ceiling, thinking about their upcoming mission. He would indeed play the main role in their mission, so he could never mess it up. Failure was never an option.
For the entire four days, Arth was trained far more intense than how Chief Gregor had trained him. Most of his practices and exercises had focused on his agility; like fast reactions for evasion, and launching attacks as quickly as possible. While Arth had his training with the boss during the day, he was also practicing his ice materialization at night. Being desperate to master it as soon as possible, he barely had any time for sleep. Good thing, Robert was always there to spar with him to test the strength of his ice weapons. After how many days of waiting, the tournament was now a day ahead. Arth prepared his bag and packed extra clothes, since he will be staying in the capital for one day and one night with Robert and Alice. Lucas said that the guild had a secret chamber in the Lower Ring of the capital, so they would be staying there. After lunch, Lucas had called the team to discuss their final plan. Arth arrived in the meeting room, realizing t
"Hey! Are you gonna keep us waiting?!" Alice yelled with her usual, annoying voice. "Come on!" Arth sighed after realizing that the young man had already been gone from his sight. He caught up with the two and then they continued going straight towards the main road. The aromatic smell in the cold air had captured Arth’s nose as they passed by the flower shops and stalls beside the street. He suddenly remembered the garden he used to go in the Frostwood village. Even with the low temperature and the snow falling, the cyclamen and winter flowers were still in bloom. The group finally stopped in front of a two story building, its walls cemented and painted in dark brown. The roof was entirely covered by thick snow, and the glass windows had black curtains inside. As Robert opened the wooden door, Arth saw different shelves of clothing, textiles and carpets inside, making him realize that it was a fabric shop. The gentle and comforting fragrance o
"On to your posts," Kael commanded. Over fifty silver-armored knights nodded, then marched away, heading to their positions, both at the front and back of the audiences. Every minute the noise around the circular arena had grown louder as the citizens filled the seats. It was almost noon, but there was light snow falling fromthe gloomy sky. A thick, dark tent had roofed the small grandstand. Kael stood on the dais beside Councilor Rowan with his team on his back. While the old councilor ate his lunch, Kael observed the audience, trying to find the face of his brother in the arena. He was certain that the Forgotten Winter had already arrived, as he sensed the strange, powerful presences around. But he needed to be patient until the enemies would show themselves. His plans were ready for anything that would happen. “Sir Kael.” Grand Knight Bryle and Sadon just came, taking their positions on the other side of the councilor. They had been Ro
“Let the match begin!” The championships of the tournament started after the sun had settled. Arth’s ears were struck by the people’s screams, cheering all around him. Torches circled the stage, giving light to the entire arena. Throughout the tournament, Arth managed to make it to the finals without breaking a single sweat. His previous opponents had simply been too dumb, so he never got to use his sword. But now that Arth would be facing a strong opponent, he knew that winning this final match would never be easy. ‘Tristan from Cold Hills village … He’s the guy I saw yesterday when we went here in the capital… the dual blade wielder,’Arth thought, eyeing his fiercely-looking opponent. Tristan stood a bit taller, with lighter skin than Arth. His bright, gray-colored eyes burned with passion and sense of duty. “I guess he’s a knight in the capital,” Arth whispered to himself. “You’re q
After a few seconds, he searched around for Robert and Alice, but their seats had already been emptied. The people were all heading home, so the archways in the arena were fully crowded. Arth panicked, having no idea what to do. Should he find Robert and Alice first? But he couldn’t just let the councilor return to the Upper Ring. This was his only chance while the councilor would still ride on his carriage. Upon several thoughts, he finally decided to follow the councilor. The painful sting on his wounded arm and cheek worsened as the cold wind blew against him. He did a simple dressing for the injury in his arm while he jogged out of the arena. His hands were painted with dark red from all the blood, which caught the attention of the people. But this was no time to think of his appearance. His mission must come first before anything else. Nightfall came as Arth stepped outside the arena. An enclose
“You’ve grown so big now … little Ali, and your hair … keeping it long as always, eh?” The grand knight cocked his head, a smirk forming on his lips. He had the same white hair, black eyes, and light skin. Their family indeed had decent looks and beauty. But the evil smirk on her brother was like the one you would see from a mad villain. “Call me by that name again and I’ll torment you worse than you can ever think of, before you end up just like father … just like that devil,” Alice’s spat, her black eyes becoming vicious. Arth had never seen her as serious as this before. He could sense the overflowing hatred and resentment in her eyes. “Get the councilor now,” Alice said, turning to Arth. “We’ll handle these two.” Arth looked at her with worried eyes. “Are you sure?” “We don’t have much time. You need to kill our target now.” “But what about—”
The worst became even worse. Arth shivered in fear, his lips still parted in shock. The ones standing ahead of him were the formidable foes he would not want to face. The glorious members of the Frostguarde had crushed the ground after jumping from the flying beast in the sky. Reinforcements of knights and cavalries from the Upper Ring had also just arrived, halting behind the elite group. It was indeed … a trap. Arth swallowed hard the lump on his throat. He could not believe that Tristan was a member of the Frostguarde. All five of them were dressed in cerulean-colored cloak, even the Divine Knight himself. One of them had a middle-aged face of a man, holding a long blue spear. Another member was a red-haired lady wielding a brown staff. That was all what Arth could notice, as his arms were already trembling with fear and exhaustion. Divine Knight Kael removed the hood of his cloak, revealing his black hair fixed backwar
“You’re all screwed, now.” Robert still had the guts to tease his opponent, though he was already on the ground, coughing with blood. “Curse you, rebels!” The grand knight went outrageous, stabbing his broadsword against Robert, but then … The sound of thunder clapped and rumbled throughout the skies. They all paused and looked up. The dark clouds began to glow with yellow light, illuminating the open grounds of the bailey. Something big was about to happen … something that was truly beyond what they expected. The glorious judgment from the heavens had finally come. Thousands of golden arrows fell from the clouds, like rain, with glowing drops, but these drops were as deadly as life-ending catastrophes. “Let’s move!” Arth immediately helped Robert to get up. Then the three began to rush back towards the Lower Ring. As they hasted, Arth looked back, seeing
It was a grand festive night for the entire kingdom capital to celebrate the crowning of the new king. Arth had never been to a big celebration before, seeing lots and lots of people. He was seated at the dais of the Great Hall with tons of food on his own table. It was too much at least for him, so he just sighed and then sipped on his wine, looking around. The other three kings had already returned to their regions right after the ceremony had ended earlier, as they still had other responsibilities to attend to.Now that more people were present, the air had become warmer, filled with loud chats and laughs from the nobles and lords while they drank their liquor. The live music played by the talented musicians had made the Great Hall much noisier.“So this is what a feast is like,” Arth shook his head, watching a drunk noble dance over the table while his fellows laughed and clapped their hands, “It’s &
“How is it, My Prince?” The dressmaker lowered his chin, his eyes looking over his glasses.“It looks wonderful, sir. Thank you,” Arth said as he surveyed himself in front of the mirror. He wore a knee-length blue tunic of golden beadings. Beneath it was his white inner garment with two buttons undone to reveal his chest, tucked in his straight-cut black trousers.“Are you certain you do not want any jewelry, Your Highness? It’ll make you look more glamorous in the ceremony later,” the man said. “We have five boxes for you to choose from … some fine gold necklaces and diamond rings—”“It’s all good.” Arth smiled at the dressmaker and then looked again at the mirror as a servant was oiling his newly-cut black hair. The door of the dressing room suddenly opened.Looking through the mi
Arth cried and screamed from the pain … as the cold, rough earth was crushing his body in between. He exerted his arms, pushing both sides to prevent the ground from squeezing him, but hopeless it was … as it only made him bleed more, caused by the sharp stones against his skin.“Have no worries, for I shall take good care of your lands and—”Dethnar’s voice stopped as well as the ground, then followed by the demon cursing.“What’s … happening … now …?” Arth’s eyes fell heavier, but he still kept his consciousness.“You’re … a … demon …?! What are you?!” Dethnar spoke again from above, his voice shaking and mad. “You traitor! You are one of us … and yet—”“And you are a fool …”Arth
“The Demon King had ordered me to initiate the war by destroying the Power Crystal in the North,” Dethnar said, dark-blue flames covering his entire demon form. “This undead army of mine is just the beginning. After getting rid of the crystal I can now—”“I never asked for you to babble about your stupid plans, demon,” Arth cut him off. “You won’t be able to execute any of that. Now that you’re separated from Lucas, I can finally eliminate you from our world.”“Eliminate me?” Dethnar smiled wider in amusement. “You think you can beat me in my true form? You can’t even make a scratch.”“We’ll see,” Arth replied, then he closed his eyes and took a deep breath.‘This is it, father,’he thought.‘I’ll show them the true power of our
Draphiron’s wings created a powerful gust of wind on the high tower as its claws held on to the pillars, and then lowered its long neck for Arth to climb down. The dragon’s remaining alar, in the form of a blue spirit, had helped him reach Crown Galacer in a short time.“Thanks, Draphiron … thank you, father,” Arth whispered, rubbing the dragon’s neck before he jumped off and landed on the floor. The blue spirit slowly dissolved into strings of alar, flying away from the tower, then they all compressed together and finally exploded in the skies like fireworks.Arth turned around, studying the situation now. The first thing he saw was the cracked Power Crystal … with tiny fragments scattered on the floor. Nearly destroyed it was … that Divine Knight must’ve stopped the demon before it could shatter the crystal. Kael did his job well enough, holding off the demon befo
After rushing out of the dungeon, Kael led the whole group inside the citadel, sneaking, as they did not want to catch the attention of the ghouls scurrying on the palace grounds … and the undead beasts flying above.A symphony of darkness and silence welcomed them … and it was a bit strange as to why Kael found no ghouls inside. The armory was located on the third floor of the citadel, so they had to use the wide staircases. As they made their climb, they tried to keep the silence, but Kael was annoyed by the Chief’s son who kept on whispering to Gregor. Had Gregor not taught his son how to keep his mouth shut? When they reached the armory, Gregor and his son quickly got their swords back. “Where are we going now?” the Chief asked Kael as they stepped out of the armory.“The throne room,” Kael replied. They got back to the staircases and clim
“Are you sure about this? What if they attack Cold Hills?” Tristan asked as they rode their horses, the west gate of the kingdom capital rising from their view ahead. It was a half-day journey from Cold Hills after they spotted the blue beam piercing through the skies, coming from the far north.“Don’t worry,” Kael replied. “Our village will be fine. The winterbird from the citadel said that the enemies were only attacking straight towards the capital.”As they reached the western gatehouse, Kael could still see the destroyed portcullis he had caused by the explosion two days ago. He raised his head to the top of the curtain walls and found no knights on watch anymoreThe fort bell kept on ringing, like repeating thunder amidst the dark clouds; the alarm for evacuation. The skies had already turned dark … wind blowing hard against his face, carrying the scent
“No …” Once again he burst into tears, leaning his forehead on the cold floor.“I failed … all because of me … all because of my stupidity!”Arth could no longer see any hope of saving Glacia. His body was too exhausted, worn out to go after Lucas and stop him. He could not even stand a chance now that Lucas had the sword and the power of its curse. No one could stop him now. And even if there was someone, Arth was already tired of hoping.“So all of our efforts are wasted … our accomplishments with the team … with Alice … all are wasted for his selfish ambitions?!” Arth said to himself as he hit his own forehead against the floor. “Alice died for nothing …
“Watch out, boss!” Arth yelled. But before the claw of the dragon could strike, Lucas made a high jump to dodge. He waved his sword to land a quick slash, aiming at the beast’s head, but then it ducked and spun its enormous body, swinging its huge tail to strike him. Lucas couldn’t move, as he’s still on air, so he had no other choice but to block the tail with his arms crossed. The direct hit blasted Lucas away, slamming him against the stone wall, only to fall on the floor, coughing blood, leaving the wall cracked.Arth held his sword tighter. Despite its enormous size, Draphiron was undeniably fast.Even Arth himself couldn’t possibly react in time had he been in Lucas’ situation earlier.“Why does it keep on attacking us?!” Arth shouted. No … Why would it keep on attacking only Lucas? Not Arth … or J
