"Everything okay?" Dave asked when Holly returned to her post in front of the stove, even though the vegetables had now replaced her onion soup, and he seemed to have a proper handle on things.

"No, Dave. Everything's turned to shit. Never swipe right on Hot Connexions, especially if your match is a hot Russian you have no hope of getting with."

"Ah!" Dave nodded, a small smile tugging at his lips. "I have no idea what Hot Connexions is. But I think it's best to stay away from said hot Russian, don't you think? Your brother will kill you both."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Holly said, suddenly fascinated by Chef's Kiss logo on the front of her apron. "That was just a general statement."

"Of course," Dave said. "And I'm just giving you general advice. Don't swipe right on any hot Russians, period."

Too late now, Holly thought as she yanked the apron off and dumped it on the counter.

"What about the vegetables?"

"You can swipe right on them, Dave!" she replied cheeki

"Holly?" "Andrei? " They both spoke at once, gawking at one another. Well, Holly was sure she was staring more than him, because he liked his woman warm-blooded, and she was anything but. "You keep showing up like a bad penny," she said caustically, remembering his comment earlier as she strolled to the kitchen to get a glass of water. "You live here now?" Andrei arched his eyebrows, ignoring her snarky comment. "What's it to you?" she asked. "Do you live here or not?" "What does it matter? You have my penthouse now, and because of you, I have to squat at my brother's place." Andrei stepped closer, his face an expressionless mask. Holly inched back with each of his measured steps, only to trap herself against the kitchen island. Finally, he also paused, leaving very little space between them. His cool cigarette-laced breath fanned the side of her face as he whispered, his voice sending a tingle up her spine, like he'd run his sensual fingers on her skin, "Listen here, you li

Upstairs, Andrei couldn't bring himself to sit down. He was so afraid that if he did, his mind would come to a complete standstill, too, and he'd have no choice but to think about his confrontation with Holly and her expired crush. What the hell was he supposed to do with an expired crush? He fumed as he paced the sparsely furnished monochrome space. The only piece of decor in the room with some personality was the hauntingly realistic painting of a man kneeling in front of a crib, cradling his head, and for some inexplicable reason, Andrei was drawn to it. He couldn't see the man's face—no, Liam's face, because surely that flame-coloured hair had to be his—but his agony screamed at him in ways he'd never felt before. "Good heavens!" Andrei whispered, wondering what had possessed Eden to paint something so heartbreaking, and why Liam would want to hang it proudly in his home office. Thoroughly disturbed by the painting, Andrei stepped away and frowned at his Patek Phillipe timepi

"What did you do to her? You'd better not have touched her!" Andrei shoved Liam off, growling at him as he fixed his clothes, "Get your shit together. What the fuck do you take me for? She came to my penthouse, drunk as a skunk, trashed my clothes and fell asleep. I took care of her, and you're welcome!" "Look, Drei," Liam said, addressing him by his nickname for the first time in a long while. "I'm sorry. It's just that she's my baby sister and going through a rough patch. I'm sure you heard about her injury." "Well, you might want to keep her on a leash. I'm not the one you should be worried about!" Andrei shrugged off his apology, still pissed out of his mind that Liam had the nerve to put his hands on him. He was damn lucky they were old friends and business partners. Otherwise, he would have put a bullet right between his eyes. Nobody fucking touched his Armani suits. Well, nobody except Liam's bratty sister, of course. The same woman at the centre of their conflict. "Wha

Andrei returned to the study, and while he waited for Liam, he checked both his mailboxes, Aero's and the family's. Nothing was burning on Aero's side, but too many pots were with the family. Juan had heard through the grapevine that they had decided not to do business with him. In a lengthy email, he expressed his outrage at Andrei for making him fly to the shithole third-world country for nothing. But he was enjoying the safari, so his trip wasn't a total waste after all. Andrei read and reread the email, trying to figure out the most diplomatic way to respond. But nothing his tired brain came up with sounded remotely civil. So he shelved Juan, promising himself he'd handle him later. There was no doubt in Andrei's mind that Mikhail or one of his men had whispered into Juan's ears about their proposed exit plan. He'd deal with his cousin and his men later, too, he decided as he moved on to his father's email next, his blood running cold at the message. The meeting with the Petrovs

Andrei thought heading home, having a few drinks, and sleeping it off would do the trick. But it didn't. When he woke up the following morning with a mother of headaches, he was still hopping mad. An hour later, all showered, dressed up and slightly sober thanks to Helga's nasty ass hangover cure, he felt almost human again. Almost. But his rage was nowhere close to cooling. When he jumped in the car a little while later, Ivan and Igor barely spoke after their usual greetings. They'd known each other all their lives and could read the other like a book, so one look at him told them to keep their wisecrack comments to themselves. "Where to?" Igor asked from behind the wheel as they paused at a four-way stop. "Glen Eagles!" Andrei replied. Wordlessly, Igor indicated, switched lanes, and took a left to connect them to the highway. Not a single word was uttered between the three men for the duration of their drive to Glen Eagles; the uncomfortable silence swirling in the ca

"Everything okay?" Ivan asked when Andrei jumped in the back. "How do you swipe right on someone again?" he asked. Platitudes and niceties were wasted on him. "Swipe right?" Igor scratched his head. "Where?" "On the Hot Connexions app." "If you haven't declined the match-up, you should still be able to swipe right on your connection," Ivan clarified. Andrei threw his phone at him, "Swipe right on Holly Anderson!" Igor slammed the brakes hard, jerking all of them forward. If their seat belts weren't on, Ivan, with Andrei's phone, would have flown straight through the windscreen. And Andrei couldn't allow that. Not when he was so close to a brilliant plan. He held out his hand, and Ivan returned the phone while Igor waited for an explanation. And when it didn't come willingly, he forced it out of him. "Why are you swiping right on Holly Anderson?" "Because she's the only woman who swiped right on me," Andrei replied simply as he scrolled through his phone and accessed the

While Andrei went about his morning, making his grand plans, across town in Green Point, Holly lay in bed, staring at the digital clock on her nightstand. It was just after 8:00 AM, and if it was any other Tuesday, she'd be at the Institute by now, where she'd spend six, sometimes seven hours drifting between classes, rehearsals and dress fittings. But now that her knee had fucked out on her, there'd be none of that today. Wracked by an overwhelming sense of hopelessness and grief, Holly wanted nothing more than to stay in bed and hide under the covers until her life made sense again. But she couldn't bring herself to do it; she wouldn't get a second opinion by wallowing in self-pity. So she dragged herself to the en suite bathroom to start her day. She flipped the switch, gasping at her reflection when the overhead light flickered to life. She didn't need anyone to tell her she looked like death warmed over. Her pasty complexion and gigantic panda eyes were doing an excellent job

"Great! Just great!" Liam shook his head at Willow, glaring at her. "This is not the right way to approach an intervention! Linda said we should ease her into it!" "Whoa!" Holly shrieked, bursting into horrified laughter as she sprung from her seat, pain racking her body at the abrupt movement. "Who exactly asked for this intervention?" Sure, she'd gone on a bender two nights ago, ended up in Andrei's bed and kissed Cooper in full view of the paparazzi. But they were all minor incidents. Nothing as scandalous as half the shit Willow had done. Like that one time she lied to everyone about holidaying in Clifton Bay when, in fact, she was in Belize at some nudist beach with an oil tycoon twice her age she'd met on Hot Connexions, and whose only saving grace, in Holly's humble opinion, was his bank balance— "Oh, you poor thing, come here!" Willow opened her arms again. But Holly pushed her away. As close as they were, she didn't want her coddling, especially when Willow had just admitt

"Behind what?" Nikolai looked confused, but Andrei didn't buy his act one bit. After all, he was a master manipulator. "You know damn well what I'm talking about!" Andrei shouted as he backed away, terrified that if he didn't, he wouldn't be able to resist the urge to grab his father by the throat and strangle him to death with his bare hands. Nikolai shut the door and leaned against it, crossing his arms over his chest. "You're crashing out. Pull yourself together." "Don't tell me to pull myself together!" Andrei yelled, steepling his hands as he sat on the edge of his desk. "You were behind Holly's accident—" "What accident?" Nikolai demanded, and when Andrei filled him in, he was adamant he had nothing to do with the shitshow on Church Street. "That's all on you, Son," he said, still leaning on the door. "What the hell did you think would happen when you held Veronika at gunpoint?" "No," Andrei shook his head in denial, but deep down, he knew his old man was right. He'd put

All eight photos of Holly, taken at various nightclubs in Rock Castle, including Crush, painted her in a terrible light. But the most disturbing was the one of her snogging Cooper at the Institute just a few weeks back. "Why do you have these?" Andrei stammered, seeing the future he'd envisioned slip through his fingers. "How do you even have these photos?" "Does it matter?" Nikolai replied as he draped his hands behind his head and crossed his legs. "All that matters is your jig is up." "It wasn't an act." "Yes, it was," said Nikolai. "I knew you were both up to shit last night when the Anderson lass showed up with her gift bags like Freddie Krueger handing out candy on Halloween. And I admit, all that jazz about loving you since she was sixteen and wanting to protect you was touching. But I knew there was no shred of truth in her words. Not with that photo of her and her lover floating all over the internet." "They broke up," Andrei explained. "They are not together anymore."

"Right!" Andrei nodded, his shoulders drooping in defeat. The quick five-minute chat he'd hoped for would be much longer, it seemed. So he buzzed Monique and asked her to bring refreshments and the Nexus file. "Yes, Mr Ivanov," she said before strutting out of the room. She was back before Andrei had even settled down in his office chair, making small talk with Nikolai while she poured him a cup of coffee and handed him the Nexus folder. When she was done, she excused herself, reminding Andrei she was a phone call away if he needed something. With a bitter smile, Andrei waved her off. The only thing he needed was an update on Holly. So, while his father browsed the Nexus file, Andrei texted Lev, demanding an update. 'Still nothing,' came Lev's response, and Andrei had to dig deep inside himself for every ounce of self-control to not hurl his phone across the room, the knot in his stomach growing bigger the longer the waiting game continued. "Is everything okay?" Nikolai looke

With the situation well beyond his control, Andrei had no choice but to sit and patiently wait for Lev's call. But, ten minutes in, and his head of security still hadn't called, Andrei tried Holly again. Her phone didn't ring this time, the dead tone thrusting him into utter despair. He was always an optimist, a glass-full kind of guy. He had to be. His role as the number two of the family required him to always present a confident facade. How else would he negotiate high-stakes deals and run one of the country's most powerful crime families if he weren't? But the mess with Holly and Veronika was forcing him to put aside his rose-tinted glasses and see it for exactly what it was: a catastrophic failure on his part and his first real test at keeping his word to Liam. Two nights ago, he'd thrown down the gauntlet to Liam and swore he'd do a far better job of protecting Holly than the Andersons had ever done. If he failed… If Holly didn't make it out of the disaster unfolding on Ch

  • Reckless Hearts   101|Bring Him To His Knees

Sometime during his morning commute to work, Andrei came to the firm conclusion that he was an asshole. But, it wasn't something he would have readily admitted to if it weren't for his long chat with Ivan. His lieutenant had rightly pointed out that his shock at finding Juan's drugs in Holly's possession was perfectly understandable. His reaction, though, was over the top. He could have handled their 'talk' with far more grace and owed Holly an apology. Of course, even before chatting with Ivan, Andrei had already planned to surprise Holly with a bunch of peonies later, kiss the hell out of her and whisk her off to lunch at her favourite restaurant where he'd beg for forgiveness. So, as soon as he settled down in his office, he called the florist to order the flowers. But Diane soured his mood, telling him he'd have to wait at least two weeks since peonies were no longer in season and would have to be imported. "Can I interest you in roses instead?" she asked. "No, Diane. Roses

  • Reckless Hearts   100|Just Getting Started

You know how in movies, just before you die, time seems to slow down, and your life flashes in front of your eyes, making you question every decision, every choice you've ever made leading up to that moment? Sometimes, some long-dead relative, shrouded by a halo of light, is waiting for you at the end of a long, narrow tunnel to help you crossover. And other times, it's just the light. All you have to do is walk towards it. Holly didn't get any of that. No long-dead relative was waiting for her. No bright light to walk towards. No memories of her life flashed by. And time definitely didn't slow down. In fact, she was aware of every excruciating second as the car hit a traffic light and spun around several times before, ironically, crashing into a luxury car dealership on the corner of Church Street, missing a shiny Range Rover by mere inches. When the car salesmen—going about their mundane morning just moments before disaster struck— screamed and jumped out of the way, du

A mournful sigh slipped through Holly's lips as she pushed the laptop away and picked up her now-cold coffee. As much as she wanted to look away, her eyes seemed to have a mind of their own. They remained glued to a Polaroid photo of Isabella taken in one of the studios at the Institute while she was in croisé devant, a pose in which the dancer stands facing a corner at an angle to the audience.Knowing what Holly knew now about the circumstances leading up to Isabella's tragic end, it wasn't hard to figure out who had taken the photo. Her own socials were littered with such images, and she always joked that if dancing didn't work out for Cooper, he could always go into photography. Of course, he didn't have the technical know-how. But there was something special about how he captured his subjects...He had a way of making them appear larger than life, like they were the centre of the universe and everything around them existed purely for them. Looking at the photos, at the fragments

After Andrei insisted on driving her to The Castle, Holly had planned to jump straight into bed and pass out. But, agitated and heartbroken, hours later, when the sun finally came up, she was still tossing and turning, going over their fight. Never in her wildest dreams would Holly have imagined that her first-ever argument with Andrei would be over some stupid snuff bullet that wasn't even hers. At the heart of it, though, she wasn't all cut up because Andrei had insinuated she was a junkie. Everything he said was true. She was a cokehead and owned her addiction. What really messed her up was that he didn't believe a word she said about the capsule not being hers. After everything they'd been through, hearing her out was the least he could have done. But the distrust in his eyes, like she wasn't worthy of being given the benefit of the doubt simply because she was a drug user, had damn near killed her. In that moment, with his unfounded accusations smashing down on her like a to

"You know the rules," Igor stepped in. If there was ever a time when Andrei wanted to throttle him, it was then. He not only knew the rules, but also enforced them diligently by subjecting the family's top management to random drug testing and running background checks on potential girlfriends. So, Igor playing the rules card felt like a fucking slap in the face."Holly is compromised," insisted Ivan, siding with Igor. "She's bad for business!""Watch yourself!" Andrei growled. "That's my future wife you're talking about!""Oh, for fuck's sake! After everything we've just said, you can't still be thinking about going through with this marriage. Your father will not allow it!""After the shit he pulled with Veronika, I'm done with my father. Holly and I will still get married as planned!""So what exactly did Papa Ivanov do?" asked Ivan, picking up his cutlery again."What didn't he do?" said Andrei, linking his hands behind his head.
