Chapter 8

Author: Empty Space
The slap split my lip, and in that instant, the fragile remnants of my self-worth shattered completely.

I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably, tears and snot streaming down my face.

I looked like a messy, desperate beggar as I clawed at my hair, wailing with anguish.

"Why did you hit me? You’re the ones who asked if I wanted to go abroad—it was your question!

"You don’t love me. You’ve never loved me. You’d rather I was dead! Is that it? Would you finally be happy if I died?"

Everyone froze, stunned by my outburst, then quickly grew enraged.

My mom dropped her pretense of kindness and snapped, "Carol Lowe, what are you doing? Are you trying to embarrass us?"

My dad waved the housekeepers away before barking, "Shut up! You’re a Lowe, not some screaming lunatic!"

Shane sneered coldly, silent but brimming with disdain.

I trembled violently—my lips, my hands, my entire body shaking uncontrollably.

Three years. I didn’t even know why I was still alive after three years of

“Oh, sweetie, you really hate bothering us, don’t you? But I truly love you and hope you’ll consider studying abroad to broaden your horizons,” my mom said earnestly, her tone filled with persuasion. I hung up the call and went back to study.…After Leila went abroad, my college entrance exams drew closer. For many wealthy kids, the college entrance exams were just a minor hurdle—something they didn’t even need to bother with. But for me, it was the most important turning point of my life. With unwavering determination, I aimed to take first place in the year and secure a spot at the nation’s top university. I was fully confident. The moment I stepped out of the exam hall, tears streamed down my face. My deskmate rolled her eyes dramatically. “Why are you crying? Did you look at yourself in the mirror again?”When I got back to my apartment, I actually did look in the mirror. It was a new mirror I’d bought recently. I never used to have the habit of looking at myself,

“I’m hungry. I’m going to get something to eat.” I kept walking toward a small diner nearby. Their hotdog bun was just two dollars, and the grilled chicken with vegetables was three. They were my favorite dishes. Normally, I’d pick one and stretch it out over a meal. But today, I decided to splurge and ordered both. Just as I started eating, Shane walked in. The strong aroma hit him hard, making him cough uncontrollably. He covered his mouth and nose before sitting down beside me. “You’re eating this?” He looked shocked. I nodded. “It’s good.” He frowned deeply, speechless for a moment. After a sigh, he said, “Leila’s life abroad is miles better than yours. Her monthly allowance is over forty thousand dollars. From what I hear, she’s partying every day.” I kept eating my hotdog bun, clearly unbothered. Seeing that I didn’t respond, Shane suddenly pulled out a card and handed it to me. “You’re the top scorer in the city. That’s a big deal. As your brother, I’ll re

“Yes!” my dad replied firmly. “Great,” I said, my gaze unwavering. “I’ll leave for abroad right now. Please help me with the paperwork, and while you’re at it, let Leila know to pick me up.” My dad froze again, stumbling over his words. “That… might not be ideal. Maybe we should discuss it with Leila first? Wait until she wakes up…” I smiled, picked up my suitcase, and waved goodbye. No one followed me. When my mom answered my call, her voice trembled with emotion. “Carol, you finally called me! It’s been so many years since you’ve come home. How have you been? I heard you started a company—is it tiring…” I cut her off. “You should come pick up your daughter. She’s at the Kentridge Police Station.” “What?” I briefly explained the situation and was about to hang up when my mom burst into sobs. “Carol, you’re my real daughter. We’ve already disowned Leila. • Rebirth of the Unwanted Daughter   Chapter 1

Realizing I had been reborn, I sat in silence for a long time. In front of me, my parents spoke through reddened eyes, pouring out their guilt and how much they missed me over the years. They even said they had been thinking about me for ten years! In my previous life, I was so touched that I broke down in tears, throwing myself into their arms, naïvely believing I finally had a family. That I was finally loved. But three years later, I was tearing at my hair, screaming and crying as I jumped off a building in front of them, hoping my death would earn just a sliver of their affection. No one had ever loved me. So, this time, I felt nothing. I was as calm and unfeeling.“Sweetheart, are you still settling in? It’s alright, I’ll help you pick a room first. Take your time,” my mother said gently, noticing my silence. She took my hand and led me upstairs to the third floor. My father followed us with a smile, pulling out his phone to call Shane Lowe. “Come home as soon as you c

I was their biological daughter. What’s so wrong about picking a room I like?I wondered, filled with doubt. My mom’s expression shifted again, as though she wanted to say something but held back. My dad appeared more stern than usual, yet he stayed silent as well. Leila stepped forward to help me make the bed. “Sister, just stay here. This house is yours, after all. You can live wherever you like.” And so, I settled in. In the rural town, my days were filled with pots, pans, and endless fields. Now that I was in the city, it felt like that was all I knew how to do. But here, there were no pots, no pans, and no fields to be found. So, I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I had only been in Leila’s room for half a day before Shane, who rushed back, dragged me out. He was furious. With anger seething in his voice, he yanked me away from my book and into the hallway. “Don’t you have any manners? This is Leila’s room! How could you just take it over so shamelessly?” I wa

My parents were still there. As expected, my mom quickly stepped in to comfort her. “Your sister is probably just tired and needs some rest. Don’t read too much into it.” My dad chimed in, “Leila, no one’s taking anyone else’s place in this family. Don’t let it bother you.” But there was. It was me. …After a nap, the villa was quiet. The housekeeper informed me, “Miss Leila wasn’t in a good mood, so Mr and Mrs. Lowe took her out shopping.” I simply responded, “Oh.” That was fine by me. I began organizing the cash gifts—money from my parents and relatives when they came to welcome me home. Altogether, they added up to over twenty thousand dollars. I needed to save it. Because I knew my future wouldn’t be easy, and this money would be my biggest asset. The town chief had helped me open a bank account, so I grabbed my bank card and headed to the nearest branch. In my previous life, after three difficult years, I grew familiar with the area. So, I wouldn’t get lo

Especially after senior year began, I often fantasized about being a strong, independent woman—someone who had her own career, stood at the pinnacle of success and was admired by everyone. How ridiculous my past life had been. Three whole years wasted, all on chasing love. I spent those years desperately seeking love from my family. I wanted to be loved by my mom, dad, and brother. But on my eighteenth birthday, I jumped from a high-rise to end my miserable existence. Eighteen—it was such a significant age.And I knew something big would happen today. Sure enough, early in the morning, my mom called me. It was the first time she’d called in six months. The last call was on New Year’s Eve, inviting me to come home for a family dinner. I didn’t go. Instead, I stayed in my apartment and made myself some pasta. I picked up the call, and her cheerful voice filled the line. “Sweetheart, it’s been so long! I didn’t want to bother you while you were studying, so I held off

"Sis, aren’t you tired of this?" I thought.“I’ve got things to do. See you.” I adjusted my shoulder bag and headed toward the apartment. One of the guys on a motorcycle leaned closer to Leila and asked, "Leila, who’s she?""Who else? My dumb parents’ precious daughter.," Leila replied nonchalantly. The guy let out a low whistle. "You shouldn’t talk about Mr. and Mrs. Lowe like that.""Whatever," Leila scoffed, turning her bike around and speeding off.It was clear she had no respect for Mom and Dad. Maybe she didn’t even love them.I smiled to myself. “Mom, Dad—you’re the ones I pity the most.”During the summer break of my first year of high school, I went back home. But the house was empty. The housekeeper, who was cleaning the pool, told me that my parents and Leila had left for a beach vacation.“They left yesterday,” she said, looking puzzled. “Didn’t they tell you?”I didn’t respond.
