“Happy birthday to you,”
My eyes slowly opened and I squinted them against the morning’s sunlight, my lips widening to form a smile when I saw the view in front of me, it quickly turned into full-blown laughter.“Mom, dad.” I cried out flinging aside the duvet and jumping up from my bed in joy.“Happy birthday to you, our beautiful Alena.” My parents’ voices died down as they gazed at me with love in their eyes. My mom and dad stood together with a huge birthday cake in hand and a candle that took the form of the number eighteen, that was right - today I was officially an adult.“Come on, make a wish.” Mom urged excitedly.I stood in front of them, shut my eyes, and made my wish before blowing off the candles, mom clapped and dad joined her too after setting the cake at my bedside.“So what’d you wish for?” Dad asked.“I’m not telling you of course,” I said, giving him an amused look.“Ahh, I see you’ve grown up already, hiding things from your parents.” He said, shaking his head at me, I stuck out my tongue at him as I picked up the fork on top of the plate that was next to the cake. I took a large forkful of cake and shoved it down my mouth, my mom stared at me disappointedly.“So mom,” I began with my mouth full. “Will I get to meet my wolf today?”She decidedly ignored my manners before stroking my hair. “You might or it might take a month or longer but whenever it ends up being, I can’t wait for you to meet her.”I nodded, “me too.”Meeting my wolf was something I’d been excited about ever since I was a kid, I’d always badger my mother with questions concerning hers, what was it like to have something else in you with a mind of their own? And have conversations with them, it was all so fascinating and very soon I was going to meet mine, I felt my face redden when I thought of my birthday wish:“Dear moon goddess, I wish to meet my mate soon enough and I promise to love him with all my heart and be entirely devoted to him.”“Get ready and come downstairs then, have your first family breakfast as an adult,” Dad said ruffling my hair before heading out of my room with mom and the cake.I entered the bathroom and stared at my reflection in the mirror, what did I look like at eighteen? There were no changes in my appearance, my dark hair was still the same, and my eyes, which were my favorite features - big, hazel-colored stared back at me. I pouted my lips at my reflection, it was a good thing though, I didn’t want to change so easily. After taking a needed shower and making myself look presentable in a floral gown that reached my mid-thighs, I made my way downstairs and joined my family for breakfast.I was my parent's only child and they’d never seemed to want anything more, my father was the Beta of our pack and we belonged in the top hierarchy amongst our pack members, living influentially.“You look beautiful darling.” Mom complimented me when I entered the dining area.I twirled while showing off my dress. “Don’t I?”It got a chuckle from the both of them and I settled down, just as I grabbed a plate to dish my food, a man hurried into the room, breathless.Dad immediately stood up and stared at him wide-eyed. “What happened?”He bowed his head out of respect before speaking. “We’ve caught some vampires at the borders, we have no idea if they are more and…”“Damn those vampires!” My father growled.Mom looked up with fright. “How many did you catch? Are we safe?”He bowed his head to her too. “We caught three of them but we have no information, they are refusing to speak.” And like an afterthought, he added. “Yet.”I shuddered at his cold tone before fetching gravy onto my plate.“Let’s go,” Dad said, shrugging on his coat. From how our windows shook violently against the wind, I was guessing it was frigid outside.“Be careful,” Mom said in a soft tone.“I will,” Was all he said as he marched outside with the man behind him.Mom had turned somber at the news. “I wonder how long this will go on for.” She said,For as long as I could remember, we and the vampires have been at loggerheads - they were cold, ruthless killers who thrived off in causing chaos. Our pack, Dark Moon was the most powerful one amongst the rest of our species, we were feared and respected, which was probably why the vampires had set their eyes on us, over the years they’d been many unsuccessful attempts to breach our territory, it was also why we had a lot of vampires locked down in the dungeon and a whole lot more bodies rotting down the cliff.“They never give up, do they?” I asked mom.“They must think we’re vulnerable without our Alpha,” She grinned at me. “They have no idea who our Beta is.”I nodded with a smile, my dad was one hell of a scary person when in action and I shuddered at the thought of what would happen to those prisoners.“Excited for tonight?” Mom asked, changing the topic.“Of course I am,” I said. Once a year we gather up and set a bonfire at midnight where we offer an animal sacrifice to the moon goddess and sing her praises until dawn. It was a festival we all were excited about and luckily for me, this year it coincided with my most important birthday.“I have a feeling something big is waiting for me tonight,” I said. The night was lit up with the large bonfire we had made and everyone looked beautifully dressed as they mingled, laughed, and chatted with each other. My best friend was by my side whispering about other people’s looks in my ear as I watched on with a small smile on my face.Silence swept across the crowd when my father stood up, his presence tall and loud.“Today my daughter has attained adulthood,” He announced and loud cheers followed his words.“Totally a daddy’s girl,” Marina whispered in my ear causing me to giggle.Dad continued, “And it has luckily for her coincided with a special night in the Dark Moon pack. To seek the full blessing of the moon goddess, Alena will go round the fire three times while the rest of us simply sing praises of our blessed goddess.”Claps went round as I made my way towards the fire, I glanced at the moon that was yet to fully develop in the sky and I smiled just before I began making my rounds, background singing followed me.My chest was tightening in an uncomfortable manner as I made my way around the bonfire the first time, the pain was becoming unbearable and it worsened when I began the second round, no one noticed as they were all engrossed in their singing, all eyes staring up at the moon.“You can do this Alena,” I urged myself to go on while clenching my chest tightly, and just as I made it through the third round, I collapsed heavily on the bare floor, the pain of my body hitting the ground was no match for the burning pain I felt in my chest and head, it was as though I was on fire, a scream tore through me.My eyes stared up at the moon that had slowly made its way from behind the shadows of the cloud and was now in full view, its rays hitting on earth, or more precisely, me.My screams were louder as the burning feeling increased until I felt myself falling into an abyss of darkness, just as something came crashing into me, loud and violent, splitting my head as memories I didn’t remember having resurfaced, gnawing at me. I wondered how long it was until my head finally exploded and if this was what dying felt like.“Let the witch and her daughter burn.”I heard the chants loud and clear continuously in my head, and I screamed and screamed until I felt myself being pulled finally into a world of unconsciousness.A hooded figure made his way through the thickness of the forest, its large trees providing cover enough to shield him from view.He made his way farther until he got to a place where three large stones met, he dug his hand into his large coat’s pocket and brought out a small circular, solid object. He placed it on top of one of the stones, the largest one, and immediately a building came into sight, digging through the Earth as it sprang up in full view. The man’s eyes remained passive as he stared at the little building right before stepping in through the door, the doorway immediately lengthened to accommodate him.Inside, a woman was seated in the dimly lit room, he frowned his face ever so slightly at the stench that hit his nostril, he still couldn’t get over the smell of this room.“Good to see you.” The woman said staring at him, she was seated cross-legged on the floor, a small table in front of her that held a bowl with simmering purple liquid. He stared at the bowl before s
The cold air slapped me as I made my way through a path formed by constant walkthrough, the night was quiet except filled with crickets music and the usual nighttime bird sounds. Large trees danced around gracefully from the wind and the moonlight shone brightly, lightening my way, my destination was not quite much of a distance from my home and soon enough, I reached it.I stared from the cover of a mahogany tree at the mansion that stood proudly amongst a thick mass of woodland - The Alpha’s home.I felt my body stiffen and the fury in me worsen as I gazed upon it. The Alpha who was still the same devil that he'd always been remained in power and life, I was going to snatch both soon enough. Alpha Damon had been away for three full moons now, only the elders in the council and my father knew where he was gone. Before now, I could count the number of times I’d actually seen him, he kept to himself and only spoke to the necessary men in power but still, he was feared and highly respe
In less than a week, I had gone unconscious twice already but this time, I wished my eyes didn’t open, I would be better off dead.It was unfortunate that we never get what we wished for because my eyes opened slowly to meet a pair of icy blue ones staring back at me… I wanted to claw them out.Instead, I stared back at Alpha Damon, my eyes taking him in, all of him. He hadn't changed much from the last time I’d seen him which was when he had put a torch to my Mother’s body, I could see through him, all of the cruelty that could exist within a man but it was unfortunate, that he had met someone who had a thousand fold more of it than him… I was going to be the death of him, it was just time now. With my eyes still fixed on him, I made a silent promise to my mother’s ashes.“Who are you?” He asked taking a step back, folding his hands across his chest.I stared at him and said nothing. I could feel the pull between us, stronger than anything I’d ever felt and I could feel my wolf’s res
Damon knew every emotion there was to know, but when it came to grief, he knew it better than anyone else... It had after all been his companion for so long.Losing one's mate was as painful as ripping a person's chest out of their heart, and for the past decades, that had been the only thing he'd felt - heart-wrenching grief, that was until moments ago when he'd set his eyes on her, whoever she was.His wolf had perked up at the sight of her, and so had everything in him when he had come in her presence, it was as though every part of him that had been dead for so long had only just woken up. Damon could still remember the first time he'd realized Aria was his mate, and that was the same emotions that had overpowered him in this strange woman's presence, even more, because he hadn't felt anything in so long, this one had come crashing into him, giving him a reason to be when he hadn't had any, and it terrified him.He moved his lips against hers, crushing his mouth against hers in a
The metallic smell of blood filled my nose, pleasing me as I pushed the blade further. This wasn't the plan, this hadn't been the plan but I hadn't been able to stop myself, not after what I’d come across. When Damon spoke, I heard the smile on his lips. “And I had hoped you'll make good on your promise.”Hours before..."Alena, are you okay?” Marina asked the door slamming loudly behind her as she hurried into my house, worry in her eyes. She had been away for days now so my mother had said, my eyes went up to her... This was my best friend? Marina had untamed red hair that seemed to be all over the place, she was pretty in a wild way.She grabbed me by the hand. “I was so worried about you, I'm sorry I hadn't come earlier.” She said, I roughly pulled my hand away from her and when I saw the hurt expression cross her features, I realized what I had done - this was going to be harder than I thought. It would be difficult to manage Eliana and Alena, we were two different people and onl
Alena..." Marina said, taking a step back. The clearing had grown healthily over the decades, filled with lush greenland but I could still point it out, where exactly the logs had been arranged, piled one on top of the other."Leave here!" I said to the werewolf girl and I'm guessing from the tone of my voice, she didn't need to hear anything more, she took to her heels. My fingers shook frantically and I felt the energy in me surge."Alena, calm down." My wolf's voice resounded in my head calmly."Shut the hell up!" I yelled back at her and she promptly did.The buzz in my fingers increased and I could feel the sizzling electricity from the ground beneath me connecting with them, and without thinking twice, I released it, both energy clashing to elicit a large explosion that resonated throughout the forest as the massive land of vegetation caught fire, immediately spreading through. The impact of the blast snatched me from the ground and I was flung in the opposite direction landing
My body began to shake furiously, the sword dropped from my hand as I landed on my knees hitting the floor. My vision blurred and I felt the air in my lungs restrict.“Hell no!”I managed out when I heard the sound of my bones snapping as my body reshaped to take another form. My body stretched, its muscles lengthening and my skin immediately became covered with golden-colored furs, sharp claws erupted from my fingers and dug themselves into the ground.I let out a scream of anger that instead came out as a growl… I was fully transformed into my wolf form.I struggled back for control but my wolf was equally as stubborn, holding on firmly to her reign of control.Damon stood watching me with intense eyes, and I snapped my teeth at him as I took a threatening step toward him. Just a few more seconds, a little more and he'd have been dead. The inner turmoil within myself continued.“I won't let you make this mistake Alena, get a hold of yourself now!” She said to me, her anger resonating
Where could she be?” She asked, crying as she ran her hands through her hair, tears running down her face.“This is unlike her, Alena would never spend the night elsewhere. David, do something!” She yelled at her husband.“I’m doing all I can Hannah!” He yelled back. “We spent all of last night with our warriors searching through the forest. What more can I do?”She fell to the floor crying. “My darling girl,”The door opened and a man stepped into the house holding up a pair of dainty sandals, Alena’s mother immediately jumped up at the sight of it. She dragged it from his hands and stared at it, her mouth quivering.“David,” She called, “these are Alena’s.” And she looked up at her husband with frightened eyes.Beta David moved closer to his wife and held one from the pair in his shaky hands, the strap was cut and it was dirty, stained with brown from sand, and his chest tightened.“What if she has been kidnapped?” His wife asked. “What if those damn vampires have gotten her?”And s
You're not dead." I said harshly This was my fault. Why did it take me so long before making a move? Why had I allowed David and Valinne to use me for so long before I got half the mind to escape? I was so disgusted by myself. If anything happened to him, it was because of me."Alena," He muttered."Yes, yes," I nodded. "I'm here and you're fine now. I promise I'm sorry. I'm so so sorry, I was stupid."His eyes opened a little and he stared at me.A small smile curled up his lips. "I've missed you." He said and I felt my heart still.I loved him.I loved him more than I could ever love anyone else.He was the ultimate love of my life and I couldn't believe I'd spent so much time hating him instead of truly loving him. I wasted a lot of time being angry at him but I was going to compensate for that.I was going to love him for the rest of my life I let go of him and climbed the slab on the floor to help me reach where his hands were chained. I inserted the key in the lock and unlocked
My eyes moved from the cell Alex was held in to the one opposite and I was shocked to see Adrianne. I had completely forgotten about the existence of these two people."What are you doing here?" Alex asked."Where is Damon?" I asked him in a frantic tone.He stared back at me with surprise. "Damon? Is he here?"I felt my eyes roll all the way back to my head and I wanted to leave him and continue with my search because I didn't have half the time to be standing around and chatting but I thought if there was anything, Alex would probably help find Damon.Especially now that it was proven that not he but David was the traitor. I wanted to feel sorry for accusing him wrongly and jumping to conclusions but I really was too exhausted to be bothered with such feelings so instead, I brought out the key I had stolen from the dungeon earlier during our squabble. It seemed like only one key unlocked all the locks of the cell rooms. I inserted the key into the lock and twisted it open."Hey!" Ad
I was taking a risk and it was one that might cause both I and Damon's life but it was all I could do. It was my last resort. My eyes shut, I tried my best to remember all I could about the convenience store, the shelves, the paint, the smell of it.My brain fought against the strain but I kept on with it, harder with each passing second until finally, I felt the air change, and when my eyes came open I was in the convenience store, I hoped. It was dark, so dark and cold I shivered from it despite the sweater I was wearing.I hoped with everything in me that I wasn't going to regret this, if my plans didn't work then it was over for Damon and me.I had guessed and I prayed it was correct that Damon was being held in the underground dungeons. It was the only place I could think of that he was being held in and it was like why David had refused to take me to see him.Although during my time there, I hadn't heard anything to indicate we were in the same building but something still convi
Alex watched the woman in the cell opposite him. It was what he had done for the past months they'd been locked together. He had only watched her with complete silence even though she tried to get him to talk, there was nothing for him to say to her.How stupid could he have been? Had he been so desperate for love, he had fallen madly for the first woman to give him attention and it didn't help that she looked like that. He had for so long been insecure about himself because of his scars and why wouldn't he be? Not after his true mate had rejected him.He still had the image of her in his mind - her long, thick blonde hair that cascaded down her back, almost reaching her waist, of her perfect skin and blue, bright eyes. She was an Alpha daughter and was his mate, his mate who had been horrified at the sight of him.It was why when Adrianne had given him attention, he had been taken by it, taken by her, and here they both were - he had just been a pawn in her game.It was his fault fo
He glared at me from where he was seated opposite me.“I won't do any more of your bidding if I don't see Damon and be convinced enough he is still alive.”Valinne chuckled. “Aren’t you just the cutest, Eliana?”“That is impossible, he is alive and that is all there is to that. You will not see him!”Was he truly dead? Fear gripped me.“Why won't you allow me to see him? If truly he is alive, it wouldn't be a problem for you, would it? The only reason I can think of…”David cut me off impatiently, “he is alive, I have no reason to kill him, not until you give me one, and right now, you really are.”“I want to see him!” I insisted. Why won't they allow me to see him if he was alive as they claimed and deep down, I knew he was but why were they being so insistent on me not seeing him? I hated the goosebumps the feeling of something being terribly wrong caused.“You shall not! Jeremiah!”“Shut up!” I growled and immediately everything around us rattled, the mugs on the table, the books b
“Get up!” Jeremiah said, opening the door and yelling at me from outside. I ignored him until he had to fill his big frame into the room and pull me, and himself out of it.He was panting slightly as he led me down the stairs and my lips widened into a smile at his discomfort.Today, I was led outdoors where a group of vampires was bound and lined up and the pack members were standing around and watching, the segregation between the werewolves and vampires remained. I let out a groan at the sight; how many prisoners does David need to punish?I stared at my feet this time as David spoke, willing for the time to move faster while still knowing that I was going to have a repeat of the days ago event.“These vampires bound today are those of us who have broken the important rule for the cohabitation of the two species. Blood feeding should only be done with wild animals, members of other packs, and rogues. My vision for this merger is to help the Dark Moon pack achieve what no other pack
“Ah,” He heard the self-satisfaction in David's voice. “I can see your senses are still sharp, Damon.”The fury in him had heightened with David’s presence but he wasn't going to let it show, it would only serve to give the idiot more pleasure about what he’d done. He wouldn't let him know that he was going crazy from being locked up, it was what he wanted.“I am a born Alpha, remember? There are just some things that can't be stolen, unfortunately.” He said in an arrogant tone that he wasn't feeling. The room was still engulfed in darkness and he found it slightly bothersome.“Refusing to show your face, David? Or you just can't stand looking at me? Strange since I expect you'd be reveling in my sight.” He said dryly.“Can’t stand looking at you, Damon?” And he chuckled. “There is nothing to look at.”The insult pierced him and he felt his jaw clench tight but he said nothing in response. The lights finally came on and like every single time, it momentarily left him blind so he had t
I would like to kill them all, every single person in existence around me.It would be an easy feat, I wanted to set them on fire, myself included. It would be easy, I said to myself again, all I had to do was to simply let my powers roll over me and connect it with nature’s energy, I could feel it buzzing beneath my feet. The anger and pain in me would be infused into it so much that no one would be spared when I unleashed but I couldn't.Nothing hurt more than the fact that I couldn't do it, so I cried, screamed, and kicked as I was bound back, the chains locked around my hands and I was led back to the attic where I currently sat, watching the wall opposite me with eyes blurred from tears.Marina.I repeated her names over and over again until it was the only thing ringing in my head. She was dead because of me, I had wanted to save her but instead, I had shown I cared much about her and made her prey to Valinne’s cruelty.A lesson for me.I wished I was dead.I wished Damon had le
The days seemed to roll into one for him and he could barely tell the difference between night and day. His eyes had gotten accustomed to the darkness of his holding cell and he could almost see the cracks on the wall, the peeling of the paint on it.The coldness from the damp walls was his constant partner, it seeped into his skin clinging to him, boring into him - his fingernails, toenails, chewing every inch of his body but he couldn't complain not when he was left at its mercy. He has been stripped off of almost all of his clothing, the only thing left on him was shorts that barely reached his knees. His both hands were chained to the wall and too many times to count, his knees had buckled but the chains locked onto his wrist held him up, digging into the skin.Relieving himself was an embarrassing feat, a pail was brought to him and he did his business while standing, one of his hands unchained, and after he was done, the pail was taken away and his hand was chained back.Damon w
