Chapter 1: Song Bird

~Sebastian~

There are two kinds of wolves in this world, those with a chip on their shoulder and those who are just downright cheery fuckers. I personally have a few chips on my shoulders. The first one is the annoyingly cheery asshat sitting in front of me. The Alpha to be — Nickolai.

Don’t get me wrong, I would die for this boy. Well, man, I guess since he turned eighteen a week ago. And since that day, he has been a grinning fool with a hero complex and the need to prove himself. I don’t understand why he wants to prove himself. The Alphaship is his. That’s how it goes. The alpha has a kid, and the kid gets the title.

And I get to babysit.

“Hey, Seb!” Nickolai calls from the passenger seat.

He spins around, with a half-cocked grin on his face and I sigh internally. I love this freak of sunshine and smiles, about as much as I hate him. I’d call it a solid ‘he’s fine. And that’s saying a lot for me, but damn. He has been overbearing and annoying the whole damn ride. Constantly asking questions and then answering them himself. This is the first time he has been out to do real Alpha things without his father, Jameson.

“What” I grumble, taking my headphones from my ears.

"Do you think there will be any fighting when we get there?”

I huff an amused chuckle at the thought. Nickolai is a good fighter, but he is always searching for ways to prove himself to his father.

“Don’t know,” I offer, crossing my arms over my chest and looking back out the window. The mission is to go in, get this treaty signed and leave, no fighting. What’s the point of a mission if I don’t get to punch someone? There is absolutely no reason to send me unless you expect a fight.

And I sure as hell am expecting a fight.

Life has been easy for Nickolai, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. No matter what he needs, or wants, he deserves it because he truly is a good person and a gentle being. Which is why I choose to protect him. If I can help keep his hands clean by dirtying my own, then maybe his soul will remain untainted.

“I would love a good fight, ya know?” He says, spinning back toward the front, talking to our driver, Tank. Yeah, I know it’s an original name, but since the guy is a literal tank in size, it’s fitting.

“You would be cut down so fast, Nickolai.” Tank says with a deep chuckle.

“Nah, I’ve got Seb!” he hooks a thumb to the back seat pointing to me.

“He is the only thing that stands between you and death more often than not,” Tank agrees.

I roll my eyes and shove my headphones back in, turning my attention to the dense woods flanking us on both sides. The vehicle shakes and bounces back and forth down the rubble-covered road, the key indicator that we are close. Though they are expecting us in a few days, Nickolai insisted we arrive early to see how Alpha Alden keeps his pack in line.

Tank pulls off the road and down a path I’m certain doesn’t actually exist and we hide the vehicle in the woods and leave. Anyone can enter the major cities of other werewolves, but to remain inconspicuous, we have opted to walk the rest of the way. Because apparently, we hate ourselves.

When we hit the city, Nickolai slows down, whistling lowly.

“Damn. This place is a shithole” his eyes are wide as he sweeps it across the various holey tarps and makeshift shacks outside the main wall.

I have, however, been here twice before. It looks exactly how I remember it — like a shithole. We move closer, Tank walking behind us.

I catch movement out of the corner of my eyes, and I look directly at the hooded figure who stands perched on a lower portion of the broken wall. It is leaning back against the bricks, watching us, tracking us. I slip to the side, my interest piqued, and Tank takes my place next to Nickolai.

I watch as she looks around before pushing off the wall and walking closer. Her tight brown leather pants and her long sleeve shirt with a leather-banded waist clues me into her being female. I can feel a heat in my stare, one of hunger I have never felt before, and I grin. I have no idea who she is, but I sure as hell want to meet her.

She leaps down behind Nickolai, pulls her hood down, and then turns, looking over her shoulder at me, throwing me a wink. In the next moment she falters in her step, slamming into him and he, like the idiot he is, spins to aid her. He blushes, as she presses her hands flirtatiously on his chest and his arm, no doubt flattering him with many compliments. I can’t help the frown. I don’t like her touching him. She blushes and tucks a hair behind her ear, before offering a goodbye and rushing away, acting shy and nervous.

Oh, this little minx.

I know where her type goes. This pickpocket must have a boss, which means he is at the pub waiting for his prize.

It’s time for little Nicki to have his first pub drink. I drag us through the opening in the wall and down to a tiny pub a few blocks away. This is where the shady people belong. This is where I feel most at home. I’m a misfit, massive, and with more strength than an average wolf. My orphan parentage remains a mystery, though there is speculation of me being of an alpha bloodline, yet no known alphas claim me. Fuck if I care. I’m content serving the people who took me in.

Nickolai eagerly orders us all around and looks at me expectantly. He looks like a big man ready to discuss the plan and the mission. I give him a blank stare and he sighs. He should know better than to expect me to talk about our plan here. That’s the dumbest thing we could do. Then, reaching into his jacket pocket, he goes pale.

“It’s gone!” he whispers in worry.

“What is?” I ask, raising a brow. I know the girl was a pickpocket, a nice little lesson for Nickolai to keep his wallet closer.

“The treaty” he seethes. “I must have dropped it.” he slaps his hands all over his chest and through every pocket, panic growing by the minute.

I smirk into the beer that was placed in front of me when I see her skulking in the corner. I take a deep pull from my drink and stand.

“Look for it outside then,” I tell him and he nods, ambling away with Tank in tow.

I make my way to the corner and kick my feet up in the chair across from the little thief.

“Can I help you?” She asks, lowering her hood once more. Her auburn hair is French braided and pulled over her shoulder. Her hazel eyes size me up and I feel a flutter in my chest it's useless to try and hide my crooked grin, so I don't.

“Oh, I’m sure you can. I need it back. And I need it back now or I will be forced to take it.”

A sexy smirk plays across her pink lips.

“I’m not sure I can help you, sir.”

I push up from my reclining position and stand, stalking closer to her. I circle around her and stop when I’m behind her then I lean down inhaling her fresh smell. She shivers as I breathe in her ear and it thrills me that she reacts to my closeness. Then, leaning closer, I roughly push her chair into the small oak table she is sitting at. The air whooshes from her lips in a surprised gasp.

“I’m not going to ask nicely again,” I mumble into her ear, my nose grazing the silky flesh on her ear.

“Good,” she forces out.

She throws the table and tries to run but I grab her by the hood and yank her back. She ducks and spins, moving to her knees as she brings a balled-up fist to my inner thigh. I growl out in pain and drop to the ground. My arm shoots up, reaching out to grab her leg but I fail to get a hold of her. She is fast as shit as she runs through the pub, bounding over chairs and tables like a sprite. Taking a more brute approach, I find the straightest line to the door and I barrel through anyone who stays in my path.

“Move!” I bellow to the barmaid, who curses as she narrowly escapes my shoulder.

She is within arm’s reach but that’s not good enough, no, I want to take her down. I launch off my right foot, propelling myself through the air, and tackle her roughly to the ground. She grunts as we roll through the dirt in the alleyway, skidding to a stop. She fights me for the top position and I grin down at her once I get her pinned.

She freezes when she realizes she has lost and she lays there scowling at me as I run my hands over her pockets looking for what is mine. I cock a brow when I see the corner of the precious blue paper peeking out from under her white linen shirt. Chuckling, I tsk at her and she attempts a cocky shrug with a mischievous smile. I make sure I am holding her full attention as I run my hand up her side and carefully remove the envelope from her brassiere without trying to take a peek. I have to admit resisting the urge was much harder than I anticipated. I turn the treaty in my gloved hands, lifting it up to make sure it’s still sealed, and stow it away.

“Usually I get the asshole’s name before he feels me up.” She says.

I sit back, her body still secured under my massive form, and my head tips up in laughter.

I like her.

“If I wanted to cop a feel, I would have. I have no use for thieves or easy women.” I push myself off of her, but she remains where she is watching me curiously from the dusty ground.

“Easy, huh? That was easy for you?” She props herself up on one elbow.

“Eh, I will admit you got my heart rate up.” I smile. “Gotta be honest. I was worried this whole trip would be one without a fight. Thank you for making it that much better.”

“So happy I could help.” She mutters. I reach down and offer my hand to help her up. She eyes me suspiciously, so I take my hand back, tossing them up in a non-threatening manner.

“Just trying to be a gentleman,”

“I have a feeling that there is absolutely nothing gentle with you.”

“Probably true.” I shrug.

She turns and walks away from me. I want to call out to her, tell her to get her ass back here, but I really have no reason for her to stay and I have nothing to say to her either. I think I just enjoyed her company. Which would be the first time for me. She bounds like a gazelle up the side of a building and runs across the rooftops. She stops for a moment as she turns and looks directly at me. A smirk on her pretty lips. Then she turns and whistles, like a little songbird, singing in the morning light.

We are lucky that Ms. Grayford is deaf and never travels upstairs. Not that she would care if she did. She hates Alpha Alden as much as we all do. This is how it always is, though, the never-ending life of the Alpha babysitter. “Nickolai, you don’t have to call dibs on the things you are buying. You just pay for them and they are yours.” I remind him. He doesn’t pay me any mind. As he walks through the crowd the following something, no, someone. His eyes are glued in front of him as he eases around people, gently pushing past them. How sweet of him to care. I, however, do not, so I square my shoulders and walk straight ahead, knocking into person after person, feeling an odd sense of satisfaction. Am I looking for a fight? Bet your ass I am. I pull my zipper hoodie back on, toss the hood up over my dark hair as I walk through the door to the restaurant. Nickolai has decided he wants to treat us all to dinner, considering it’s really his father’s money and all expenses are already covered. We amuse him. Tank is sitting at the table grinning from ear to ear, chatting with Nickolai who has very clearly already started drinking. The moment I’m in Nickolai’s sight, he beams at me, though he says nothing.“Well, look who is back from his hours-long run,” Tank says, raising a beer to me.“Should you be drinking so much?” I ask, raising a brow to Nickolai.“Ah, come on. Let the boy drink his beer. He is going to be Alpha soon enough and he won’t be allowed to have any real fun,” Tank jokes.Nickolai frowns at Tank. She moves to the kitchen, closer to where I am, and I hear her silent sobs. She tries to keep them quiet as she grabs the tea kettle and fills it with water, sticking it on the stove to heat. Then she crosses to the shelf that used to be a pantry, the door now missing, and she grabs a glass container with herbs in it. She then pulls out her phone and dials a number, anxiously chewing on her nails. “Freesa,” she says with a relieved sigh. “It’s Wren. He is really bad again.” Her words are laced with worry and I imagine her eyes are glistening with tears as she leans on the counter with her back facing me. Her head droops forward as she nods solemnly. “Yeah, no, I know that. I just. I really think you should come see him.” She pauses again, before straightening up again. “You did?” She sounds surprised. “Lovesickness? What the hell is that?” I frown. It’s not an illness I have ever heard of before; I mean, outside of the human world, making jokes about it. “I’m sorry. It sounds li

~Wren~ After walking dad to his bed and giving him the medication I swiped from the pharmacy for his pain, I finally stalk to my room and drop onto my bed. Today has sucked, yet been strangely good at the same time. There is nothing quite like feeling at the top of the world, only to crawl back home to the depths of despair. It’s getting harder and harder to escape the harsh reality that if I don’t figure out a way to free my mother from her servitude at the packhouse soon, Dad will die. And as much as it’s not my fault, it will happen because I failed him. I look at the fancy clothes that Lacy lent me. I feel like such a fraud. None of this is me. The flirting and dressing up, yeah it’s fun to put on a mask and pretend for a little while, but the second I remember why I’m doing what I’m doing, I’m bogged down by the guilt my genuine smile brings me. If my father can’t be happy, then I don’t have a right to it either. Shit, no one in the outliers is privy to happiness, not unles

  • Rebel Rising The Lost Alpha's Mate   Chapter 7: Nicknames

“You look exhausted,” Sebastion says to me, his eyes straight forward as we walk through the park in the city. Nickolai is flitting from vendor to vendor, looking back to check on me now and again as he suspiciously buys everything he can, including a few floral items. Maybe I am mistaken and maybe they are for his mother or perhaps he has a sister? Who am I to assume these gifts are for me? Yet the gleam in his eye and the smirk on his lips pull me back to that thought process. I look over now at Sebastion, who is watching me curiously, and I realize he had spoken. “Oh, uh. Thanks?” I say, not sure if he is being rude or observant. He laughs and my heart flutters at the sound as I watch him, inspecting every part of his face. His dark eyes glimmer and shine, full of mirth. And the lines around his lips hint to me that maybe he does more smiling than he lets on. For the first time since meeting him, he seems relaxed, and it looks fucking glorious on him. He gives me a strange loo

I should feel guilty about kissing Nickolai to steal from him, but I can’t find myself hating the kiss as I step back from him. It was a sweet kiss. It was gentle and telling, not at all wanting. Nickolai is a gentle alpha. He has an air about him that just pulls you in like a magnet. He gazes down at me as he tugs on a piece of my loose hair, a ghost of a smile on his lips. “Uh…” I say, chuckling nervously. “What was that about?” “Oh,” his face falls suddenly and my chest feels weird at his disappointment. “I thought… you weren’t going to kiss me. Were you?” He asks, looking deflated. It’s a look I can’t stand. I don’t really understand how I feel about Nickolai. I like him. He is sexy and adorable at the same time and I want to like him but something feels like it's missing. But maybe it’s my apprehension because I know I’m lying to him? Or maybe it’s the pulling in my heart telling me not to let my walls down for him. It’s not a feeling I can put my finger on, not yet anyway, s

~Sebastian~ Nickolai, Tank, and I wait patiently outside the packhouse–if you could call it a house. This place is more like a mini fortress preparing for war. We had to come through two checkpoints to get here and here we wait, six minutes past our meeting time. I lean against the post on the front steps of the large white mansion while Nickolai sighs heavily, checking his watch once more. “Be still, Nickolai” I mutter. “Easy for you to say! You’re a brute with no actual emotions.” I quirk a brow with mild amusement. He is nervous and I can see why. This is important. We want to leave a good impression on Alpha Alden, even if he is leaving a bad one on us. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean that.” he groans in frustration. “It’s fine. You didn’t hurt my tender feelings,” I joke. Nickolai leans on the post opposite me while Tank stands at the bottom of the steps looking around, no doubt feeling anxious the more we wait. From a protection standpoint, the longer we wait for such a meeting

At freshly twelve he has been training for the past two years so he can be strong enough to protect himself. We should have known he was doing it to protect us. One day, he will make the best alpha of this pack.A lanky man steps into the doorway and Leo shifts his weight to his back foot, preparing for battle. My heart is in my throat as I watch the man lunge with a growl toward my son. I fell off the bed, trying to protect him. Leo is so graceful in his movements as he glides out of the way and drags a dagger along the man’s back. As long as the man doesn’t shift into a wolf, Leo might be able to hold his own. Seb has been gone for three days, and those three days have been atrocious. He is further than the mate bond can extend, so my mind has been hollow and lonely. It also doesn’t help that my hormones are raging and my mate is fighting in a battle on the other side of Nickolai’s pack.“No” I shake my head. “No,” I repeat, more sternly, tears welling in my eyes. • Rebel Rising The Lost Alpha's Mate   Chapter 87: New warriors and a Beta

The musty, cool air of the dungeons clings to me as we come up to the prisoners we captured weeks ago. Half the men are anxiously waiting at the bars while the rest lean on the walls or stare out the bar window. Most of the men are on the younger side, a few even looking closer to Nickolai’s young age of eighteen. When they notice me coming in with Tank, they all straighten up and glance at each other nervously. These ten men are not the only prisoners we collected that night. In fact, they are only a small portion of the number of warriors we were able to round up. I don’t think killing the others would be wise, but letting them go is not an option, so instead, we house them here providing the essentials to survive without having an entertaining life. “Alpha,” they greet me in unison, as though they have been rehearsing for days. I shoot a look at Tank, who is trying not to laugh. “I hear you all wished to speak with me. Spit it out so I can move along to other important matters.”

~Sebastian~“How is she?” Nickolai asks through the receiver. I pinch the bridge of my nose, remembering Wren’s beautiful speech and the tears that wet her cheeks. There is no way to erase the hurt in her eyes and the ache that she feels so keenly at her father’s death, but she had been perfect, stunning, so perfectly Wren. “As good as can be expected.” I sigh.“Good. I’m sorry I missed it.” I can hear the disappointment in his voice, but we all understand that he has duties to tend to. “When is your ceremony?” I ask him.“Two days.”We sit in silence for a minute, each of us waiting for the other to speak first. I know Nickolai hates I can’t be there for his Alpha ceremony. And it’s not that we don’t want to be there, it’s just that the timing simply doesn’t work for me and Wren. Or anyone in the werewolf community, since there is a war that is resulting in higher death tolls daily. Especially in our allies’ packs lately. “Look, I know you wanted us to be there…”“I get it, Seb.

But today isn’t about any of that. Today, we are all the same. We are a pack mourning our losses and the people we loved.” He looks down at me and I know he wants me to take over. “For as long as I can remember, life in this pack was full of tension and fear. It always felt like we were living half a life. The men and women on this memorial fought and died for what they believed in. They fought for their loved ones and for you and me. I’m not sure how many of you remember my dad, who he was, and what happened to him after they took my mother from his side, from me.” My eyes look over at my mother, who is watching me closely. “He died saving me,” I say, taking a deep breath. “Like so many others, he was sick most of my life. ~Wren~The marble slabs glitter as the sun beams down as if a beacon on the dead. Highlighting their loss and what it means to us, our pack. I hate that we have two empty slabs. Two enormous gray and shiny hunks of empty rock are ready for the next names to be etched. It’s a sobering reminder that the dead are gone and the living will always follow. How we go and when we go isn’t up to us. Life is fragile and fleeting. All the living can do once the ones we love have left, is keep them alive in our minds and heart. Originally, the entire area was going to be a meadow of wildflowers, something we give back to the earth, and in return, she would bring us beauty to console our aching hearts. But growing such things takes time–time we didn’t really have. So Sebastian and Tank suggested we plant some annual flowers and then next year we will prepare the ground for the wildflowers. Tank even said we should add some benches and stone walkways so people can come and reminisce with the people

~Sebastian~I stand from my desk, checking the clock and groaning when I realize it's two in the morning. It’s been a week since Nickolai left and today is Wren’s fathers memorial. The werewolf's body is strange and amazing with its healing properties, but even healers struggle to keep up with what the body is capable of.“I know in the human world they would have sewn it back on if the cut was clean.” I shrug. “But it was chewed off and after the fight, as I’m sure you remember, my hand wasn’t the only appendage littering the grou
