Beep, Beep, Beep.
The steady beeping of the heart monitor is all I hear as my eyes open slowly. Everything seems blurry at first, and then my vision starts to clear. I don’t know exactly how to explain how I am feeling right now, but all I can say is that I feel pain mixed with numbness.
I try to sit up by supporting my body weight on my arms, but someone stops me from doing so.
“I don’t think you should be doing that,” The man says and I listen to him as I watch him. I lay back on the bed, following the advice of this complete stranger.
I stare at him, trying to see whether I can recognize him, but unfortunately, I can not. I don’t know him, but why then is he here?
“Where am I?” I ask the man as I look around the room I am in. The bed feels comfortable but the medical tubes that are connected to me are what isn’t.
“You don’t remember?” He asks and I squint my eyes.I wish that I didn’t remember, I wish I had forgotten the whole day, or maybe my whole life, that would have been the only good thing to happen to me today. Forgetting Mitch and the six years we spent together would have been a blessing.
“I wish I didn’t,” I say truthfully to him and he looks away.
“I was the one driving the black car that hit you, I am the reason that you are spending the night in a hospital when you should have been spending it with your husband,” He looks back and me and says.
He is very attractive, but he has dark energy that I can not explain. It is like he has been hurt deeply, his eyes are weary and although he looks rich as hell, he looks miserable.
“If anything, you saved me from me,” I reply to him and I watch confusion cover his perfectly carved face.
“What do you mean? I almost killed you, I ran you over with my car,” He reminds me and I smile sadly.
“I know that. Just know that it’s complicated and that I accept your apology for hitting me with your car,” I reply to him and he sighs.
I realize that I am no longer wearing the wedding dress and that makes me happy, I don’t want to be reminded of Mitch in any kind of way. I am now wearing a hospital gown that is really comfortable.
“Do you want me to call your husband? I’m sure he would want to know where his bride is, it’s been hours since the accident,” The man offers and I quickly decline.
“No! I don’t want you to call anyone, just don’t leave me alone,” I say to him and he gives me a small smile.
“Okay,” He replies softly as he relaxes in the chair he is sitting in.
The door of the room suddenly opens and a young man walks in. He is wearing a doctor’s coat and he has his name tag right on the pocket. The name tag says “Evan”.
“Hi, my name is Doctor Evans, and I am here to give the results,” He says and the mystery man sitting next to me stands to his feet and shakes the doctor’s hand.
“I’m Chris Kingston, I was the one who brought this lovely lady in,” He refers to me and I listen to both of them. So the mystery man’s name is Chris, that is nice to know.
“I am guessing that you are the husband? She came in here with a bridal dress,” The doctor says, and Chris and I say at the same time, “No!”.
“I was the one that hit her, I am the driver of the black car,” Chris says and then sighs sadly.
“Oh,” The doctor says and then he turns his attention to me.
“Would you like me to alert the police?” He asks me, and Chris and I lock eyes for a brief second.
“No, it’s fine, I’m not pressing any charges,” I reply to him and he nods.
“Thank you,” Chris mouths to me and I give him a smile as he sits down.
“Would you like me to call anyone for you? Family, friends?” Doctor Evan asks me and I think over it for a few seconds before answering.
If I have anyone called, Mitch would learn of it, and he would be here with Ben and a whole lot of people in no time. I will rather be alone for now.
“No, just tell me the results,” I inform him and he smiles professionally.
“Well…” The doctor begins as he clicks on a digital tablet in his hand.
“You have three broken ribs, a concussion, a sprained ankle, and lastly, your entire lower body is paralyzed,” He tells me, and I chuckle dryly.
“You’re kidding, right? I can move my legs,” I say as I try to move my legs but nothing happens.
“Holy cow! I can’t move my legs!” I begin to panic. My heart monitor is beeping faster and my breathing has accelerated also. I think I am having an anxiety attack.
Why did I not notice this before? Oh my gosh, I don’t want to be paralyzed for life.
“You need to calm down,” The doctor tells me, and then he taps on his tablet a couple of times. In a few seconds, a nurse enters the room.
“Calm down? Would you be calm when you just found out that your entire lower body is not functional?” Chris asks the doctor.
“You’re right, I’m sorry,” The doctor apologizes.
“Is this permanent?” I ask and he shakes his head as to say no.
“It’s not, that is what I wanted to say. It is temporary and you would be walking in a year with the right resources,” The doctor explains and Chris scoffs.
“I have a hospital in China that could take care of her and have her walking in three months,” He says, and I look at him.
“If only you would agree to go with me, of course,” He says in a soft tone, and I bite my lower lip gently.
“Is this okay? Is it okay if I could be transferred to the hospital in China that Chris is talking about?” I ask the doctor and he shares a look with the nurse before answering.
“Well, if you give your consent, I could help do the paperwork for the transfer,” He replies to me.
“Great, I’m going to China,” I say as I smirk.
The doctor and the nurse excuses themselves and exits the room, but advises me to think about my decision, considering that I just met Chris and that he was the one that placed me in this situation in the first place.
“You know, he’s right. I was the one who put you in this situation, why should you go with me to China?” Chris says to me without looking at me.
He seems really ashamed of the fact that he hit me with his car.
“I would have never been speeding if not for that stupid meeting that I was late for!” He says angrily as he punches the wall right next to him. I flinch slightly when his fist connects with the concrete wall, it looks like it hurts, but it seems like he does not care.
“Which meeting?” I ask him as he breathes heavily. He is avoiding looking at me, but I don’t mind.
“I am the CEO of two companies, one in China and the other here in the United States; which means that I am a very busy man. I was to be having a meeting with an important client and because of my flight, I was late,” He explains.
“Which is why you were speeding,” I say and he finally looks at me and nods.
“I braked, I swear I did, but it was too late,” He tells me.
“Yeah, I know,” I reply to him.
“So let me go with you to China. You said it, you know a hospital there that could have me walking in three months. Plus, I’m your problem now,” I say as I wink at him, causing him to laugh.
His laugh is contagious, it makes me laugh too.
“You sure you’re okay with it? Would your husband and family be okay with it?” He asks and I roll my eyes.
“We didn’t get married, and I don’t give a damn about family right now,” I reply to him, and he shrugs.
“Then, let’s go to China,” He says as he smiles.
Getting as far as possible from Mitch and Ben, and everyone else so I could travel to another country with a stranger is the most insane yet sane decision I have ever made. It’s a great way to start a new life and heal both physically and emotionally from the crap that I have been through just in one day.
The only regret that I have is Sammy, my sister, and my parents.
Everyone else can go to hell!
Three days after and we are officially in China, this is my first time being here and I am beyond impressed. Why did no one tell me that this country is like twenty years into the future? It all looks so futuristic.Right now I am in a very huge room that is twice the size of my room in the United States, Chris was not joking when he said he was the CEO of two companies. He calls this a house, but I call this a freaking mansion!“This show again?” Chris walks into the room shirtless and wearing grey sweatpants. He looks like a greek god and I can never get tired of looking at him shirtless, not like I would ever say that to his face.“Yeah, it is a great show, I really like it,” I tell him as I try to focus on the large flat-screen TV on the wall instead of his chest.“Yeah, she used to like it too,” He says and I take the remote control from on the bed next to me and I reduce the volume. This “she” he is referring to must be really important to him, I saw how serious and somber he go
“Am I being kidnapped?” I ask as my voice trembles in fear. The short-haired lady chuckles, and then I feel something sharp poke into my arm. Before I can react, sleep overtakes me. All the muscles in my body become weak and my eyelids are now extremely heavy.“Nighty Night,” I hear one of the women say and I fall unconscious.***Chris Kingston’s POV***I place the bottle of liquor to my lips and I gulp down the last of the content. This is actually my first time drinking this kind of specific liquor, I hate it. I know the name of it because it's my best friend’s favorite. It’s the one that gets him to tell me the name of all the women he has slept with in alphabetical order. That’s how strong it is.His name is Eric Lance and he is a real party person. His whole life is a party in his eyes, he takes nothing seriously and is the complete opposite of me, but I love him. He brings balance to my life. Although I absolutely hate this liquor, I ordered it because I want to torture myself.
***Linda Wells’ POV*** My eyes open slowly and memories begin to flood my mind. I have been kidnapped and I have no idea where I’m at. I was at Chris’ mansion one minute after he was done talking to me about his wife, and the next, two women broke into the room and I was injected with a drug that knocked me out. “Good, you’re awake. I thought I made the dose too strong and you were already dead,” I hear someone say, and their voice startles me. I am on a soft bed, and the room I am in looks nothing like a room a hostage should be in. It’s very lovely. I am not bounded in any way, my hands are not tied or cuffed, nor are my legs. “Where am I?” I ask as I sit up on the incredibly comfortable bed. All the beds I have encountered here in China have blown my mind, their quality is just amazing. Now that I am in an upright position on the bed, I can now see the person that was talking. It is one of the women that kidnapped me. She looks completely normal compared to when I saw her at
“Wait, is this a prank? Did Chris put you all up to do this?” I ask loudly, chuckling lightly as I study the facial expressions of the people in this beautiful room. The entire ceiling is a painting, and the walls look like they were painted with gold and diamonds. The air smells like lavender, and the floor is so smooth that it mimics a mirror. I can literally see my reflection in it.“Linda, you are our hostage. I sent my disciples to kidnap you because I needed Mr. Kingston to pay his debts. He has forty-eight hours to do so, or I would have to take some drastic measures,” The lady with the veil stands to her feet as she explains.“Seems a bit made up, considering that Chris is a billionaire and could pay you within a blink of an eye,” I reply to her. Sue scoffs in response, clearly amused by what I just said because she is giggling.“You have so much to catch up with, but I will not be the one to help you with that. Your boyfriend will,” The lady with the veil informs me.“Mitch?
***Chris Kingston’s POV***Those people asking me to pay 50% of my debts is like them asking me to find a tree that grows money, it’s impossible! I have thought about negotiating with them, but from experience, I know that that does not work. They are merciless, and once they make up their mind, they don’t change it. No matter how many times they have preached that they are advocating for women, they would not hesitate to suffocate Linda with poisonous gas if I don’t cough up their money, and I am not going to let that happen.I would rather die than have an innocent woman die because of my mistakes or problems.I tried my best last night to see whether I could find where The Witnesses were but it was useless. I was drunk and I had zero ideas where they could be. As I said, those bastards are very secretive. It is morning and I barely slept last night, I kept thinking about where I would get half a million dollars. The company in the United States is doing really well, pulling out h
After taking the pill, I feel nothing change. The two doctors share a look and Sue looks very nervous.“How do you feel?” The middleage doctor asks me, and I shrug lightly.“The same,” I reply to him. “There is no instant rejection from your body, that is a good thing,” He says to himslef as he takes out a small notepad from his pocket and scribbles a few words down.“Okay, we would be back in three hours. By that time, hopefully you should be walking,” He smiles at me when he says this and I reward him with a nervous shaky smile in return.I watch them pack up their bags and medical things while paying close attention to how I feel right now. I just took a drug that has only been tested on mice, and almost all the mice that it was tried on died. If this drug works, it would be almost like me being a part of changing the world, making it better for the other people who are completely paralyzed or who loved ones have been sufferring due to strokes. If it works, life would become bett
“Stop the damn car!” I hear Chris yell as I continue to convulse. It is like I have no control over my body, I am so scared.A truck honks loudly behind us and Sergio panics. The car swerves to the right, causing us to drive right off the road and into a metal street light pole. The tires of the car make a loud shrieking noise as the car makes an impact. My body finally relaxes and my throat releases, causing me to take in a deep breath as if I was just saved from drowning in the middle of the ocean. That must have been the effects of the drug that I took.I reach for Chris’ hand and I hold it tightly as my lungs take in all the air they were deprived of.When I look at him, I realize that he is unconscious and there is a small cut on his head that is bleeding a lot.“Agh,” Sergio groans as he tries to open the door of the car. He looks hurt, but it does not look serious or deadly. Just a few cuts and minor bruises on his arm and head.Chris finally comes to and the first word that e
***Chris Kingston’s POV***My heart is beating so fast and my breath has quickened as I move closer to Linda. Damn, she looks so good. Her lips are slightly parted and I can only imagine how soft they must feel.It is like I am being drawn to her, and the way she is looking straight in my eyes ignites the heat in my blood even more. I move closer and closer to her until I am inches away from kissing her. I can even feel her hot breath on my face and I know she can feel mine. She is not making any attempt to stop me and that turns me on even more.It has been months since I have felt this way, since I lost my wife and child, I have not romantically or sexually pursued anyone. It was like my emotions got turned off with remote control.Just as I am about to allow my wild emotions to have full reign on me and kiss her, a very vivid image of my wife appears in my mind and I flinch away instantly.“No, this can not happen. I am so sorry,” I apologize to Linda as guilt washes over me enti
Book Two.Linda’s POVI was walking down the stairs of my very luxurious house in china. Alone in there so it was quiet, except for the sounds of the birds chirping and some normal day to day noises.Chris had gone to work at one of his companies and since we got married, although everything has not been perfect, he has been one heck of a husband.I love him so much and although sometimes my stupid mind still tortures me of what it could have been like if I had never caught my brother with my ex, I would never want to be with anybody else. How would it have been? Maybe beautiful…but also, maybe awfully like hell.I began to hum a tone when I reached down the stairs. I’m someone who likes to be alone but recently I have been home alone during the day most of the time.I don’t work anymore because Chris makes a whole lot of money and I graduated from university last month.I should be working, my parents wanted it to be like that, but oh Chris, he said that that was never going to happ
I inhale sharply at the mention of the name of the man that my wife had an affair with. This man happens to be the same man that she had a baby for and tricked me into believing that the child was mine. This man is the goddamn same person that started this takeover battle so he and Violet could kick me out of my own company that I worked endlessly to build. Why the hell is he here to see me? “Is he alone?” I ask Zara, and she studies my facial expression for a few seconds before answering slowly,” Yeah.” “Good,” I say in a breathy way as I walk away from her desk and head towards the conference room. I receive a few more congratulations from some of the associates that I walk by before I reach the glass door of the conference room. I push the door open and I walk confidently into the room. Zackery is sitting in one of the chairs at the large table and he stares at me as I approach him. “How are you, Mr. Kingston?” He says as he stands to his feet to greet me. He extends his
***Chris Kingston’s POV***It is the next day and I am getting ready to go to the company for the first time since the takeover battle. My best friend, Eric is supposed to meet me there in an hour. Yesterday was very eventful, and I can still remember vividly how pissed Sue was. Despite her attitude, I still took Linda to see the small garden of flowers behind the house. It is one of the things in this compound that I am very proud of. The flowers there are lovely and of many kinds. The garden is well taken off by Sergio, I assigned him personally to it years ago.Linda was impressed by the beauty of the garden. She kept stopping every minute to get a whiff of how the flowers’ scent.“Good morning,” I greet Linda as I approach her. She is sitting on the couch watching the Channel 6 News as she sips on some hot tea. Her hair is held in a messy bun, and she is wearing a blue bedroom robe.“Oh,” She says when she sees that I am already dressed formally. I am wearing a gray suit, with a
Zackery’s eyes go crazy when he sees me running towards him with the shard of glass in my hand. He jumps out of the way and he cusses loudly as he falls to the ground with force.I stop myself when I reach the desk as my chest heaves up and down in a fast motion.“What the hell?!” He asks loudly, and I take his place by standing in front of his desk. “I am walking out of here with those papers,” I inform him firmly as I keep my eyes on him. I use the shard as a way to keep him a distance from me.He stands to his feet, and then he runs his hand through his hair.“F*ck!” He yells in frustration, and I tighten my grip on the shard of glass. As I do this, the sharp edges tear more at my skin but I ignore it. With the amount of adrenaline running through me right now, I barely feel the pain.“Just let me walk out of here with the papers,” I beg him, and he thins his lips.“Violet, if you want the papers so bad, I don’t care, you can have them,” Zackery says to me as he walks toward the f
***Violet Kingston’s POV***Zackery soon returns with two wine glasses and a bottle of the expensive liquor in his other hand. He has a grand smile on his face and his eyes are full of excitement.“Did he put up a fight?” He asks me as he places the wine glasses on his desk. He then opens the bottle of liquor and pours some of its content into both of the glasses.“Who are you talking about?” I inquire, though I have a feeling that he is referring to Chris.“Who else would I be talking about? Chris of course!” Zackery exclaims and I force a small laugh. He hands me one of the wine glasses and I take it from him gently. He then takes his own and places his other hand in his pocket.“Yeah, I guess he did,” I reply to him in a dull tone. He raises his glass up for a toast and I instinctively do the same. Our glasses make a distinct sound when they hit each other and Zackery cheers happily.“Hey, wait,” He says after he has sipped some of the liquor.“Why the attitude?” He asks, and then
Violet bends low and opens the folder. She then takes out a neat stack of documents from the orange folder and places them on the coffee table. I sit on the couch and I begin to review the legal documents. They are legit divorce papers, and all that is missing is my signature.“You could take a few days to think about this if you would like,” Linda suggests and I look at her. She gives me a reassuring smile, silently letting me know that she would be here for me no matter what choice I make.“I’m good,” I reply to her, and she sighs while whispering, “Okay then.”I look back at the papers, and I feel a churning in the pit of my stomach. This could be one of the biggest mistakes of my life, or this could turn out good. I don’t know for sure, but I won’t till I try.“Here,” Violet hands me a pen and I take it from her tentatively.Sue is going to be pissed as hell when she finds out about what I am about to do. I sign the documents, and when I am done, I hand them to Violet. She place
***Chris Kingston’s POV***As I head from the kitchen and back into the living room, I hear the front door close. I am also hearing a voice that does not belong to Linda. “Who was at the door?” I ask loudly when I enter the living room. My eyes land on the guest and I am flabbergasted. It’s Violet. “What the hell are you doing here?” I ask her harshly. My voice is slightly raised and by the surprised and very uncomfortable look on Linda’s face, I can tell that she has no idea how to act or what to do.“Chris, I think you should lower your voice,” Linda advises me, and Violet agrees in a daring tone.“Yeah, she’s right, I think you should,” She says as she sits down on the couch.“You have no right to be here,” I say in between my teeth as I try my very best to control my temper.“Oh, I have no right to be here, but you have the right to replace me when we have not even divorced,” She argues, and her tone is tinted with jealousy. She’s jealous of Linda? “I am not your replacement,”
“So you don’t trust me?” Chris asks Sue, and I try to intervene.“Of course, she does,” I reply at the same time that Sue disagrees by saying “No,” firmly.“The f*ck?” Chris scoffs.“Look, Mr. Kingston, I am just being honest. I trust you in other matters, but not when it comes to the divorce papers that your wife might have probably already mailed you,” She replies to him smoothly. She then leads us to a very magnificent jet plane. The stairs are already out, giving us a way to board the impressive aircraft.Once we have all boarded and fastened our seatbelts, the jet moves out of the hanger and down the runway before finally taking off. “Your wife would try all she can to get you to sign those papers, she would taunt you, and push you to the edge. So having Linda with you to remind you of the reasons you can’t sign them seems smart to me,” Sue explains to Chris when we are at cruising altitude.“Besides you representing your shady association in this matter, what do you gain person
“Good, you’re already dressed,” Sue’s voice gets louder as she walks toward the living room.Chris closes the door and follows her until they both approach me. Sue is wearing a different outfit, this one is more casual than the last one she was wearing last night.A frown sits on her lips as she eyes me from head to toe.“Linda, Linda, Linda,” She says in a frustrating tone.I stand upright and I wait to hear what she has to say. “Chris is in a war and should be in China before the end of the day. If you are going to be coming along, at least you should have had the courtesy to be showered and dressed already,” She scolds me.“It was my fault, I turned off the alarm because I wanted her to get more sleep, she has been through a lot,” Chris defends me. I don’t even remember there being an alarm clock in any of the bedrooms, he is just trying to take the blame.“Yeah, you got a point. Sorry, Linda,” Sue apologizes easily as she pushes to the side the bags and boxes of things Chris ord
