“Our sons are used to getting their own way,” Fin added. “If you don’t put your foot down, they will walk all over you. Is that what you want?” He gave me a doubtful look, as if he didn’t think so.

“No,” I spoke up, finding my voice again. “But if you don’t mind, I’d just like to go to bed. I’m exhausted. Today has taken it out of me.”

Lynn flashed a sweet smile. “I’ll show you to your room.”

As we reached the top of the landing, stepping from the carpeted stairs and onto wooden flooring, we could hear Denver roaring profanities at a group of raucous dogs outside.

Honestly, it was like Battersea dog’s home out there.

“Hey! Put a muzzle on your offspring, for crying out loud. Some of us are trying to watch Shifter Valley,” one neighbor bellowed from across the street.

“Why don’t you just mind your beeswax?” Denver retaliated, “Go fire up your catnip bong and bury your head in the litter tray.”
