“Oh, come on Raven, please don’t be difficult!”. Mum groaned as she held up the dresses for me to choose.
“How many times do I need to tell you I’m not going!”
“It’s just one evening. One evening, Raven, and that’s it, you don’t have to bother for another year”.
“Ugghh”. I growled in my throat with frustration. “Mum, what is the point in me going? I don’t have anyone there to talk to, it’ll be boring, besides no one’s even going to notice if I’m not there”.
“Oh, for goodness sake, you’re not a child, so stop huffing and just pick one! Just do this for me and your dad. As it is, we have to come up with some lie as to why he’s not going, it’ll just be even more suspicious if we have to lie for you too”.
“You don’t need to lie for me, just simply tell them, I don’t want to go”.
“Raven! I am asking you to do this!”
I exhaled in a humpf as I got off my bed. “Ok, fine, that one then!”. I told her as I pointed to a long strapless black dress. “At least with it being black, hopefully I can blend into a dark corner somewhere”. I commented with an eye roll.
“Or, you might just be surprised and actually enjoy yourself”.
“Ha! Yea, I highly doubt that”. I replied as I took the dress and hung it up on my closet door.
“Oh, Raven. You know they expect everyone to be there. It’s a celebration, it’s important for our pack to come together, it’s a big event, you know that”. She said in an understanding voice. “I know it’s been hard for you to grow up here, with what happened, but just do this tonight and I promise I won’t ask for you to attend any of the other parties they host”.
“Well, I’m holding you to that promise”. I said with a playful smirk in an attempt to lighten our moods.
“Ok.” She said as she clasped her hands together. “We better start getting ready then. You know, with your father being the palace guard, we are expected to be one of the first to arrive”.
“I know. I’ll get ready”. I reassured her. She flashed me a quick smile then headed to her own room. “Yipee!” I groaned to myself once I knew she was out of earshot.
As I walked down the stairs with my dress tailing at my heels, I heard a sudden gasp and awe sounds coming from my parents as they waited in the hall for me. “Ohh you look beautiful”. Mother chimed with a dreamy look.
“Muuum, please don’t”. I told her as I stood in front of them.
“Well, you can hardly blame her, sweetie. You do look wonderful”. Father joined in as he looked proudly down at me. He tucked his forefinger under my chin and gave me a smile.
“You’re growing up too quickly my little Raven. But I’m as adamant as I was back then. It’ll take one hell of a man to deserve such a beauty”.
“Oh my gosh dad”. I moaned with a slight grin. “You’re worse than mum”.
He laughed as he held out his arm for me to take and led me and mother out of the house and on our way to the yearly celebration dance.
I gulped down my nerves as we reached the entrance of the palace, with its huge, pristine white double doors, gold plated knockers and stone roman pillars standing on each side. I hated coming here, being around so many people that looked down on me and judged me all in one go, like I was a riff raff, or a homeless urchin brought in from the streets.
“You’ll be fine, sweetie”. Dad whispered as we approached the doors. “Keep your head up and be proud of who you are”.
I tried to take in what he said as I straightened my back, put my chin up and looked directly ahead of me as I forced myself to pretend that I was one of them enough to justify being there. The doors were opened by two men that were standing guard in tuxes.
“Good evening”. They welcomed us and the noise from inside flooded outside as my father nodded t the guards and we walked elegantly and poised into the hall.
The bright chandeliers above us were twinkling as musicians played their instruments in the background, a soft gleefully melody to start the night. The clinking of champagne glasses as people cheered one another in greeting as people mingled and strolled around in their expensive dresses and suits. In the middle of the room, stood Alpha Caleb and Luna Addison. Of course, she was dripped in diamond jewellery that just seemed to clash all too much with her sparkly silver dress. A little tiara balanced on her over-sprayed hairdo as she smiled whilst looking down her nose as the high and mighty royalty she thought herself to be. Alpha Caleb was his usual loud and show-off self, purposely exposing his expensive gold watch as he bellowed his laughter with the men standing around him.
“Right, let’s mingle then, shall we?” Father said as he let out a long breath. I figured he found these things just as tiring as I did.
I held tightly onto his arm as I followed him and mum around. Silently nodding to people, we passed by and pretending to be interested in a conversation my parents stopped to have with all different members of the pack.
I maintained my party face, with a fake smile and absolutely no eye rolling, just clutching onto my dad's jacket every time I felt any nerves setting in, every time I could hear Violet’s cackle or see her friends walk past, not hesitating to give me a cold stare. Father might not like these parties much, but I had my ex-bullies here that had made my school years hell! I quickly took hold of another glass of champagne from the waiter passing by and swigged half of it in one go, I just needed something to encourage me to keep this fake smile plastered on my face.
“Come along sweetie”. Father suddenly said to me. “Looks as though it’s time for the speech”.
Woopde-do! I inwardly moaned to myself as we made our way near to the front of the crowd where the stage rested. The alpha and Luna stood in the centre smiling to the clapping as everyone applauded them to the stage. Then Leo made his way over to them with a wide smiling Violet, trying to clasp his hand as her pink and white flouncy dress trailed behind her.
“Thank you, thank you everyone”. Alpha Caleb began to speak as the clapping subsided. “Well, your Luna and I would like to thank you all for coming here tonight. As you all well know, each year we make this night a celebration to how far we’ve come as a wolf pack and how much our land has thrived thanks to generations that have fought tirelessly to make it a home. Safe for us to live, have children and to grow old in a place we can call our own. So, let’s all cheers to my ancestor Bernard Whitlock, who found this land and made way for what it is today. Please raise your glasses with me, here’s to the Whitlock wolf pack that will succeed through the generations to come!” He toasted as we all held up our champagne, took a sip and, once more, an applause erupted as they left the stage and made their way back to the throng of people again.
Just as I was beginning to relax, father’s hand took hold of mine as he loosened it from around his arm. I looked at him in sudden worry. “You’ll have to excuse me sweetie, Alpha Caleb looks as though he wants a private word”.
“What, now?”
“Yes. I have to do regular rounds checking the perimeter and making sure the guards are staying at their posts. I promise I won’t be long”.
“Ok…” I simply agreed as I let him go, but my head kept drumming, Dammit, dammit, dammit! I looked over at my mother who was already engrossed in a conversation with two other women, and I thought how ridiculous I was to want to hang onto her until he got back. I shook my head and did my first eyeroll of the night and decided I needed to be me Raven, not fake Raven! At least when I’m being myself I can handle any comments or judgemental stares, I can shake them off, as if it is nothing. But being in this tight black dress with my hair curled and high heels on, trying to ‘fit in’… well screw it, I don’t. I strutted over to a long white cloth covered table that had an array of delicious little bite-sized foods. I thought I’d quickly nab some while there’s not too many people there and before it’s all gone, and I become even more moody cause I’m hungry.
I picked a little cracker that had a little red sauce of some sort on it and caramelised onion, I stuffed it in my mouth and moved on for the next thing, having a little taster of each delicately made item by the palace’s talented chefs. I groaned inwardly at how delightful it tasted. If no one was around, I’d be stuffing more than one thing into my mouth at a time cause it tasted that good!
“Hmm, no matter how much you try to dress something up, sometimes it can still just be a lost cause”. I heard Violet's voice approaching. I rolled my eyes… for the second time and brushed off her comment. “Your poor parents, having just a regular human for a daughter”. She jibed.
I turned around to look at her and eyed her dress up and down. “Oh, violet, I hardly recognised you without your nipples and arse hanging out. My, my you could almost pass for an actual lady!” I retorted, giving her a taste of her own medicine.
“Ugh!” She croaked as her jaw dropped, her eyes burrowing together at me. “At least I have a place in this pack. Why don’t you just do us all a favour and go live with the other humans?”
“Why don’t you do us all a favour and keep that cackling trap of yours shut for once”.
“Oooh. Someone’s feisty tonight!”.
“And someone’s looking like a toilet roll holder tonight! I mean, come one Violet, how many ruffles does one dress need!”
“Uhh, I’ll have you know this dress is incredibly expensive. In fact, the Luna picked it out herself, especially just for me”. She said as she perched her lips together and folded her arms, as if that information would make me jealous.
“Hmm, maybe she was hoping all of those ruffles would finally keep your nipples from being on full display”. I fired back with a grin.
“I don’t know who the fuck you think you are but….”
“Is there a problem here?” Luna Addison interrupted our fun little roasting. She stalked over already giving me a daggered look.
“No problem, Luna Addison. Just Raven here being a little tyrant as always”. Violet told her with a smug attitude.
The Luna tutted as she enclosed our circle and Violet's friends began to stand behind her, as if she really needs her little groupies right now! “Well, is that so?” She asked, staring hard at me.
“Well, actually that’s not quite the truth. I was just getting something to eat when Violet took it upon herself to come over and mock me. She said things and I said things, but that’s all. Moments over now, so if you’ll excuse me Luna Addison, I’ll just go and find my parents”.
“Oh, wait a moment there Raven”. Addison said as she lightly put her fingers on my shoulder, as to stop me but not wanting to really touch me.
“Now, listen here, my girl. I think you owe Violet an apology!”
“What?” I asked, baffled. “I didn’t say anything that she didn’t deserve”.
“I suggest you have a little think about your complete lack of respect as she may very well be your future Luna!” She stated and as I glanced at Violet, I caught her smarmy smirk. She was loving it! “You see, Raven…” Addison began to lower her voice as she stepped closer to me, leaving only a small gap between us as she was almost towering over me. “I’m finding it rather difficult to think of a reason as to what purpose you have in this pack! Well, if it wasn’t for your father being such a valuable guard, it wouldn’t surprise me if the alpha chose to send you on your way!”.
“But I’m not a criminal, you can’t just send me away!” I replied, trying to stick up for myself, but Addison, with how tall and cold she always looked, she was pretty intimidating, and my voice came out a lot weaker than I’d expected.
“Well, it’s almost criminal to allow a mere human to live among our pack!. She insulted back.
“I’m not just a mere human!”
“Oh, forgive me Raven, am I mistaken? Has your wolf announced itself yet? I’m sure I would have heard about it if that were the case”. She said with a sarcastic tone. “So, tell me Raven, am I mistaken?”
I looked up at her, feeling myself surrounded by scornful looks and smirks. I clenched my jaw as I could feel my expression turned into a scowl. “No”. I spoke through my teeth.
“Well then, perhaps it's high time we rethink your value to this pack and whether its best or not that you remain here… or leave! Afterall Raven, at your age with no wolf, you most certainly are..just..a..human!” She said as she tried to hide the smile that wanted to form from the pleasure she was getting by putting me in my place, which was low… way low down to the ground, as small as she could possibly make me feel.
“What’s going on?” Another voice approached which made us all jump. I looked over to see Leo staring at us all with a frown, suspicious as to why we were all huddled into a small group, with me directly in the middle.
I took that as my cue to get away from them. “Excuse me, Luna Addison”. Deserving or not, I gave her the standard respectful courtesy, turned away and made aim for the rear garden doors.
I quickly walked over to the dimly lit pond and sat behind a white wicker archway that was covered in vines and roses, enough to keep me out of view as I just stared at the water in front of me. I tried to shake away what the Luna said but it had already had my skin tingling with nerves. It wasn’t so much the insults that bothered me. Oh, Raven the girl with no wolf.. yea, yea, I’ve heard it all before! The only thing rummaging around in my head right now was what she said about making me leave. My parents would never allow me to just up and leave on my own, not unless it was my own choice, and I had another pack I wanted to explore and stay with. If they knew… if they knew I was forced to leave, without a doubt they would leave too. They’d uproot their whole lives here, just because of me! Wolfless, burden me!Maybe that’s one of the reasons my heart always feels so heavy every time I see my uncle. Every time he has an angry outburst or cries in the night, he apologises over and over
“Good morning”. Uncle greeted as I came down the stairs and followed him into the kitchen.“Good morning”. I replied. “Has dad gone already?” “Already? Raven it’s eleven o’clock. He went hours ago!” “Oh! I didn’t realise I’d slept in”. I told him as I poured myself some juice and took a seat at the table.“No college today?” “No, that’s tomorrow. But today we’re supposed to work on our own pieces, it’s part of our coursework”. “Oh.. and what piece are you working on?” “Actually, it’s a raven. I saw him at the lake the other day, but I haven’t finished yet”. “Well, now that’s suitable, isn’t it”. He smiled as he leaned against the counter. “A raven by Raven”. “Well, he was beautiful, I couldn’t resist”. “Your mother thought so too, that’s why she named you after them. So, anyway, how was the party?” “Umm, you know, the usual”. “That boring, huh?. He sniggered. “Any problems?” “No.. no, nothing much”. “Hmm… is that so?” “What?” I asked as he was looking at me suspiciously.
After two days of going through all the files of the local packs, I had one, maybe two at a push that sounded safe enough for me to run to. However, whether they’d allow a wolfless member in was still a shot in the dark. All I could do, was hope they’d take some kind of pity on me.I dragged my ass out of bed and rushed to get dressed for college. I had been up most of the night tossing and turning, convincing myself that today was the day! Tonight, at dinner, I’d discuss my ‘plan’ to explore to my parents and, hopefully, Uncle’s sheepish looks he’s had the last couple of days, won’t give anything away.“Any luck with finding a plan B?” He asked as I darted into the kitchen to grab a banana. Whispering, so mum in the next room didn’t hear.“Kind of”. I shrugged. “Maybe two… And I’m certain they’ll accept me”. I slightly lied. The guilt of hiding this from my parents was starting to get to him. I could see the worry in his eyes and he’d constantly convince me to tell them.“I’ve left a
I had woken up early the next morning and as I heard dad leave for the palace and busy in the kitchen packing her lunch for work, I quietly heaved a suitcase out from under my bed.I dragged it into my en-suite to hide it from mum as I started thrifting through my things, deciding what was the most important to pack. I folded each item and squished it in as tightly as I could, so I could fit most of my clothes in. I looked over at my bedside table as my eyes wandered over the collection of photo frames I had that held pictures of me with my parents, my uncle and two of me with my grandmother. I grabbed one of my thick woollen scarfs and carefully wrapped it around all of the frames, not wanting to leave any behind. I gulped down a lump in my throat at the thought of never being face to face with my parents or Uncle Frank again. But, today had to be my last day and tomorrow morning before dad leaves for work, I’d say my last goodbyes with pretence of excitement to be leaving. I knew th
“RAVEN!” Leo called out, just as I got to the palace doors. I turned around to see him strolling through the grand entrance hall with a smile on his face. “I hope you feel better now”. He said as he stood in front of me in his white shirt and neatly pressed black trousers, and that was the first time I had ever been able to envision him as being our future alpha.Without thinking, I suddenly flung my arms around his shoulders in an embrace. His hands lightly touched my lower back. Just as I realised what I’d done, I quickly pulled away with an embarrassed look, causing him to chuckle. “Well, I’ll take that as you do feel better!”. “I do, Leo. Thank you so much for doing that, I feel like I can actually breathe now without this big lie hanging over my head”. “So, are you going to tell your parents you’re not going away now?”“Well, I’ll tell them I don’t plan on going any time soon”. “Good. Now what are you going to do for the rest of the day, now you don’t have to pack?” “Umm, I g
I woke up and an instant smile fell across my face. I still felt that weight being lifted and the lie vanishing. I hopped out of bed excitedly and ran to uncle’s room. I tapped on his door, hoping he was already awake and in one of his calm moods.“Come in”. He called out sleepily. I quickly went inside and sat at the edge of his bed grinning from ear to ear.“What are you so happy about?” He asked with a dubious look, rubbing his tired eyes.“Well, I thought you’d like to know that I don’t have to leave anymore!”. “What?” He asked, immediately sitting up with anticipation. “How?” “I had a meeting with the alpha. He let me explain things and said I could stay”. “No way!”. He smiled. “Raven, I am so bloody glad. But you never mentioned you were going to speak with him”. “Well, I hadn’t planned to. Leo set up the meeting and, of course, the Luna was there”. I told him with a roll of my eyes when I mentioned Addison.“Wait, Leo set it up?” “Mmmhmm”. I nodded.“Well, I didn’t see tha
Two days later. I led by the lake, finishing off the last touches to my raven bird in the solace of my peaceful surroundings. I didn’t have college or anything else to do today and mum didn’t have work. Since our little tiff we still had barely spoken two words to each other and had both decided to be petty for our own reasons. Last thing I wanted to do was be at home with her all day, especially when I had woken uncle up from one of his nightmares last night, so he was in a particularly bad mood today, stomping around the house, cursing and talking gibberish to himself.I let the sun warm my bare legs as I closed my eyes, trying to imagine the bird’s soft black feathers.“Here you are”. Leo greeted me with a smile as I looked up at him walking over. “Thought I might find you here”. He said as he sat next to me. “Wow, he looks really good”. He complimented as he observed my drawing. “It looks so real as if he’s about to fly off the page”. “Ok, now you’re going a bit overboard with t
As I walked home from art class, I doddled a bit, taking my time, strolling along the path in the sunshine as I looked out at our land border. It had been three days since my fathers last warnings about the rogues, but already what he had said was now even more apparent. The guards were even more alert as they paced up and down along their section and other pack members had volunteered themselves to help keep watch. We only had two days left until alpha Caleb announced the curfew and has most of our land cut off.Leo had told me that the alpha was beginning to unload even more work onto him, especially when it came to the protocols if attacked. Alpha Caleb was trying to prepare Leo to take over just in case he didn’t survive it. I could see the pressure taking its toll on Leo, but he still always tried to be optimistic, almost hoping his father was too invincible to be taken down by a pack of rogues. Last night I had even snuck into the palace, keeping out of Addison’s sight and quizz
“I have something for you all”. I grinned mysteriously at the women. We had just finished another training session, which I had kept up with for the last six weeks of becoming Luna to reassure them that my dedication to them wouldn’t change.“You have something… what?” Abigail asked curiously as they all grouped together in front of me.I walked over to my bag that I always stuffed a towel and change of shirt into, but today I had something else… something I knew they had been wanting since we first started our sessions.I took out the document and held it out for them to see. Their eyes all wandered along it, but I could see the puzzlement in their faces.“What is it?” Clarissa questioned as they all looked at me.“Its what you all wanted”. I smiled. “As Luna, I gave the proposal to your new alpha, and…. “ I paused to build up their anticipation. “And your alpha, was more than happy to sign it off. So, from now on, any female of Whitlock that does the appropriate training can become
“Wow look at our little girl”. Mother cooed as she and my father beamed at me in my wedding dress. “Soon to be a Luna”. She sniffled as father subtly wiped a tear that was about to escape his eye.“She’s not so little now, is she?” Father commented as he let out a heavy bittersweet exhale. “Our little girl… going to be the Luna”. He said as he shook his head trying to accept how much had changed. “You have come so far, my girl, all on your own strength”. “She really has, hasn’t she”. Mother agreed with a watery smile as I grinned bashfully at them, swaying my dress side to side, listening to the sound of the material swooshing. On the surface I looked confident and excited, but in reality my hands were sweating and so were my legs. I couldn’t wait to marry Leo, but every member of our pack were going to be at the ceremony today and to celebrate with us afterward. Having all of that kind of attention and eyes on me was something I still wasn’t used to, and in a way, I kind of missed t
I stepped out of the bathroom with a towel secured around my chest as I dried my hair with another. I inwardly smiled as through the balcony glass doors, I could see the sun was beginning to set, so I walked out to the edge and rested my arms on the balcony wall looking out at Whitlock. Apart from a few children running and laughing on their way home from the lake, it all felt so warm, peaceful and safe. I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath, savouring the cool spring air and my heart thumped cheerfully at how happy I was to finally be back home.I had arrived back late last night, and the first thing I did as rush to Leo’s room and woke him up with a kiss on his cheek, and the moment he opened his eyes, he wrapped his arms around me, pulled me onto the bed and frantically tore each other’s clothes off from the yearning arousal we had the moment we were back in each other’s arms. The next morning, I surprised my parents for breakfast and told them all about how Clemonte was comin
Nine weeks had come and gone… Nine weeks I had once again been away from home, and I was missing it more and more each day. Me and Leo had been able to speak twice a week on the phone, and I knew by his voice he was feeling the same as I was about us being apart for so long. But with his own duties, his training and taking over my classes with the she-wolves, there was just no time for him to visit.I had many conversations with Caleb and Wayne, and it was decided that Jonah would come to Clemonte with Wayne’s sister, Diana and her mate Corbin in just another weeks time. According to Wayne, most of Corbin’s family had since moved on to other packs and they had already been contemplating a new chapter in their lives, so it didn’t take as much persuasion as Wayne had thought. Jonah would help them for six months to settle in and learn their new roles as alpha and Luna to Clemonte, and with a son and daughter of their own, if they chose to mate with one of Clemonte’s members, that would
For the following week, me and my night wolves had taken over the rule of Clemonte. When Robert had killed James and we locked up his people, I spoke to both Caleb and Wayne about what had happened, and I was surprised by how relieved they sounded of his demise. But with no heirs, they had both asked that we begin to lead Clemonte back into shape until they could find someone to be its next ruler. We had no intentions of being cruel to them, neglect them or bully them whilst we were here, but from the way James and his pack house lived, there were clearly no strict rules, authority or structure. James always lived behind his wall that surrounded the pack house with his guards, their wives and whatever women they had become fond of and made the cut to living within his home.It baffled us at how little the rest of his people ever saw him or had protection from him or his guards. Every day, we let his people come out three times a day for fresh air, food and water, but we always kept th
We stormed all the way through the forest, until our tongues were hanging out of our mouths, and we were panting for breath. Luckily for our breed, the desire to protect and hunt down anyone targeting our own was stronger than the ache in our legs and the hunger in our stomach’s.As soon as we had Clemonte in sight, it gave us even more of a push to run faster. We sped along, growling deep in our chests as we stormed through his broken fence and across the field. Foolish James thought his mere wall would stop any intrusions but together as a pack we all rushed to it as a unit and smashed our bodies into it, smashing it to the floor, causing everyone outside of the pack house to scream and shout in alarm. We quickly rolled back onto our feet and began chasing all the men and women as they tried to flee or shift into their wolves. We’d grab them in our mouths, piercing their skin with our teeth, enough to cause them pain and submission but not to kill, and knocking them off their feet a
One month later:“Another successful session everyone!” I chimed to all the women as they wiped the sweat from their foreheads and walked toward me, panting with breaths.“Are we always going to be able to train? Because I don’t think I can go back to how things were before”. Clarissa asked as the other women nodded in agreement.“Of course. We’ll continue our sessions for as long as you all want to”. I responded, noticing the hopefulness in their eyes.“Oh, good, cause I haven’t had this much fun in a long time, and now I feel like I’m… I’m”. “Powerful?” Laura finished her sentence as Clarissa tried to find the right word.“Yes! Yes, that’s it”. She exclaimed. “I feel like I don’t have to be so scared now if any threat comes to our border again”. “Yea, me too”. All the other women agreed in unison“That’s amazing! That’s exactly why we’re doing these classes, it’s what I want you all to feel”. I smiled, seeing the passion in their eagerness to train.“But is there more?” Jodie quiz
You really think they could handle training alongside men?” Caleb asked with a doubtful frown as I filled out the progress of each she-wolf on their training forms.“Yes, I do”. I answered adamantly as I glanced up from the paperwork, but his frown didn’t shift.“But they’ve only been training for three weeks”. “Yes, but you should see them! They’re so determined to improve. They bring their A – game to every session. They’re honestly so skilled already”. “I don’t know”. Caleb sighed as he signed off the schedule sheets for the patrol shifts.I slumped my shoulders in annoyance that he wouldn’t even attend one session to see just how incredible the women of our pack were. For once they were given the opportunity to show their capability, and I was the first to say how impressed I was. “Could you at least consider it? Just think of all the new opportunities it would open up for them. They could help patrol the borders or become palace guards! They’d be so good at it, and I can see ho
I dragged him through the dirt, along the sharp stones, branches and thorns as he winged as my teeth still dug into his flesh and begged for me to let him go, but I knew a man like James and his pack needed a strong enough warning so that me and the other night wolves could be free to roam. The rest of the men all whimpered and didn’t try to retaliate as we led them all back to their land. We finally reached the border at first light as the ground beneath us now lay frosty and the grass was damp but the forest around us smelt fresh and earthly rich.We stopped at their dilapidated fence, and I glanced back at the night wolves to make some noise and they all howled together to alert Clemonte of our arrival. Moments later, James and a gathering of his men came out from his pack house walls and stopped at the top of the field, looking at us with apprehension. I dropped the man from my mouth and growled and he didn’t hesitate to try and scramble to his feet as he clutched his shoulder. He
