While Jace and the others were deep in their thought as to why the spell seemed not to work, the flicker of life in the two sandmen appears to get extinguished for some reason as they stop moving.

Steve stepped forward to take a closer look at the heap of remaining sand. They were indeed only ordinary sand. There was nothing else mixed within it.
