“I am sorry to inform you that we lost the baby.”

..

..

..

Silence ensued as Leilani tilted her head and stared at the doctor for a few minutes before he moved closer to her and shook her gently.

“Are you okay, ma’am?”

“I… I didn’t get you,” she shook her head.

Did he intend to pass that news to someone else?

“We are sorry. We tried our…”

“Hold on. What baby?” She cut him short, her brows pulling together.

“What?”

“You said I lost my baby. I don’t understand you,” she let out a dry chuckle.

“You… you didn’t know that you were pregnant?”

Leilani stiffened and widened her eyes.

Pregnant?

She had never been pregnant for once since her four years in marriage, so how could she have miscarried a baby she didn’t even have?

“You are mistaken,” she shook her head.

“I'm sorry, ma’am.”

“No! There is no way I was… pregnant!” She cried out.

“You are wrong with the test result. Run it again.”

Her eyes darted as she shook her head at the piece of information that she had just received.

There was no way she would be pregnant without knowing.

All through her four years of marriage, she had kept up with the disdains from her in-laws because she could not bear a child, and now that she…

No way.

No!

No way!

Her mind slipped back to what had happened earlier today, in the morning, and she sighed.

She had not prepared breakfast on time and her mother in law had gotten into a fight with her.

As usual, she had called her names, and she had done everything to make the woman forgive her even when she flung a plate in her direction which hit her belly.

Her husband had not taken it lightly either. He had shoved her down the stairs and had not even batted an eye even while she cried out in pain, holding her belly while she recoiled on the floor.

“Ma’am!”

The distinct voice of the doctor jerked her back and she sniffed.

Their housekeeper had brought her to the hospital while she bled and never does it occur to her on her way here that she was pregnant.

She saw no sign of being pregnant.

Her menstrual cycle was perfect.

It had not missed and there were no raging hormones or anything of sort.

“Run the test again,” she said to the doctor, refusing to believe his words.

“I am sorry, ma'am.”

“And according to our analysis, we suspect that you have been pregnant for about six weeks before… the miscarriage,” he announced.

“No, no, my baby!” She screamed, pulled out the IV transfusion and then recoiled in the bed.

Leilani, forcefully, dragged herself out of the ward even when he continued calling her back. She tugged her feet as she walked outside the hospital, completely lost in thought.

Maybe if she had known earlier, she would have done everything she could to keep this baby. Maybe this would change her husband's mind, maybe he would love her better than he did now.

Maybe… or, maybe not.

As she boarded a taxi, she panicked. How could she explain this to Jonathan? That she lost the baby they had been trying so hard to find? He wouldn't be angry, would he?

Afterall, it was entirely their fault. He had pushed her and had caused a lot of harm. He wouldn't be pissed about this news, right?

Remembering how her husband had shoved her to the floor, she breathed out, closed her eyes, and then rested her head on the headrest.

It was just breakfast, how could he overreact that way?

After a short drive, the car pulled in front of their apartment, and then she got down after paying the driver.

She exhaled loudly when she got to the doorstep and then deliberately knocked on the door. She wasn't a guest, this was her husband's house, and there wasn't any need to knock. But she felt the need to.

She remembered when she had gone against her mother-in-law and sister-in-law living with them, but Jonathan had said it would only create more bonds with his family. And since Leilani never received family love as an orphan, she had agreed that Jonathan's family would stay with them.

After several knocks, she went in. Like she had interrupted a very important meeting, she froze when she saw the family gathered, full of laughter. They were usually not like this and her heart lit with joy, possibly they accepted her news with compassion.

"Mother…" Leilani had rushed to her mother-in-law's feet where she sat. She smiled dryly. "You look beautiful, what is the occasion," she had tried to work up a conversation.

“Oh, please!” Her mother-in-law, Nancy, threw her feet in her direction and then hissed.

Leilani moved away, her heart sinking. She was used to Nancy's usual insults, but there was a guest and she had thought Nancy would be nicer. Not especially after what had ensued between them in the morning.

She looked over to where Jonathan sat. He was sitting closely with a lady whom Leilani was just seeing for the first time. She didn't mind, she only wanted to speak with Jonathan. They had fought before she was rushed to the hospital by the housekeeper. She needed to settle things with her husband.

"Jonathan…I want to talk to you,” She stuttered.

“You have eyes, Leilani. I have a guest!” He snapped.

She swallowed hard, glanced at the woman who rolled her eyes at her, and then nodded her head.

Trying not to read much meaning to it, she clasped her hands together and then sniffed.

“I… it is important. I just want…”

"If you have nothing to say to us as a whole, just swallow it!” his mother, Nancy replied. "Did you lose your sight, or you did not see a guest sitting? You got yourself admitted to the hospital just for a little fall. Don’t be dramatic, please!

"Mother, please…" Jonathan said, cutting Nancy short. Leilani felt butterflies in her belly at her husband's defense, but her mood quickly changed in seconds when Jonathan continued. "Let her say all she has to say now, it is her last chance to be listened to, anyway."

Whatever he meant by the last chance.

"Actually," Leilani muttered. "I am just coming back from the hospital…"

"Yes, and?" Jonathan frowned. She swallowed.

She had been in the hospital since morning but he had not checked up on her nor even called when she had literally spent a whole day there.

Did he even notice her absence?

"The doctor said…" Leilani continued. "I...." Tears welled up in her eyes. "I had a miscarriage… I lost our baby," she cried, the tears rolling down her cheeks.

She had thought she saw concern in Jonathan's eyes, but it was brief, and then a chorus of laughter from him, and his mum, "For four years, you were never pregnant. Now you only fell, and you're cooking up stories about having a miscarriage," he laughed.

"I promise, I am not lying Jonathan."

"You are barren!" He screamed, getting up to his feet. His hands were locked in with the other lady and Leilani saw it. "You are not fruitful and can never be. You cannot produce a child for me and there is no need to lie about it!"

"The doctor….he was right. I was six weeks pregnant, we can..."

"Stop," he placed his hands forward. "I do not wish to hit your face in front of my guest." He barked.

He had done it before. Once… No, two times.

He said it was a mistake and she had agreed even without getting a proper apology from him.

So, she knew he could actually hit her at the moment if he wanted to.

"Jonathan…" The guest held his hand closer and placed her hand on his chest, calming him down. "Please, don't shout…the baby might be scared," She rubbed her belly.

Jonathan leaned down to kiss her forehead and then her belly, "I am sorry, my love," he apologized.

My love?!

The baby?!

She swallowed the lump in her throat and then shook her head vigorously.

What game was he trying to pull on her?

There was no way this was what she was thinking!

“W… what are… What is going on?” she asked through teary eyes.

All she wanted at the moment was to be in her husband’s arms while he tried to relieve her of the pain of her miscarriage, not this!

She was trying her best not to look at the woman who sat on the couch, her hands on her belly, like she was announcing to her that she was indeed carrying a baby in her womb. But all of this was still confusing. She needed a proper explanation as to why her husband had brought another woman home and why her in-laws were not seeing any problem with it.Jonathan returned with a brown envelope in his hand and she swallowed hard when he stretched it at her.“What is…” she sniffed.“It is divorce documents, Leilani,” he said, confirming her doubts. He had settled beside the woman again and now the paper in the envelope was already in her hand and she was scanning through it with tears in her eyes.“W… why?” her voice broke.“Why?” Nancy, her mother-in-law answered instead and burst into laughter.Nancy might actually have been the root of everything that was going on in the house. She and Jonathan had started off pretty well.Although Nancy had never been in support of their union right fr

With shaky legs, Leilani staggered up the stairs, struggling to not burst into tears so those people laughing loudly behind her wouldn’t have leverage over her. Not like they didn’t already. It was as if the world she had known was crumbling away and it hurt more because there was absolutely nothing that she could do about it. Turning the knob of the door to her room, she breathed out and then entered. However, she had not entered fully before she caught the whiff of luggage settled in the corner of her room. Her matrimonial room. Their house had just three rooms, and her mother-in-law and sister-in-law were occupying two, leaving one for her and Jonathan. Even though she was aware of how the man was displeased with them sharing a room, they still had no other choice than to. He rarely comes home and sleeps in the bed with her anyway. “Her luggage is here… already,” she stated as if anyone was there to hear her. She dropped the document on the bed, walked to the bag

Tightening her grip around the traveling box that rested gently by her leg, Leilani swallowed hard as she bore her eyes into the gate, hoping that it would suddenly open and Jonathan would rush out and then usher her in while he begged her that he had made a terrible mistake. She could only dream, of course, but she wished.Tears streamed down her face, her sweaty palm fondled into a tight fist while the other held the handle of her box gently. After she had signed the document, forcefully, Maxwell, Jonathan’s sister had taken up the task to gather her loads and had surely made sure to leave out a lot of them, obviously.“The divorce will go through with or without you around. I have my way with it. You will get your alimony from my lawyer tomorrow,” he had said before his sister and mother walked her out of the house.Dumbfounded beyond comprehension, Leilani walked out of the house, trying as hard as she could to keep her tears in and not break down in front of these people.“Ugh, f

“L… Lorenzo?” She stuttered, closed her eyes for a bit, and then opened it again. She struggled to sit up gently while the man watched her with nothing but amusement in his eyes. Or was it not? His lips tugged gently into a soft smirk. Very gently that she almost wouldn’t see that. “How long have I been out?” “Twelve hours,” he glanced at his wristwatch and answered. She breathed heavily as she finally sat up properly and looked around. She was in a very huge ward. A VIP room, as they would call it and she wondered if this was not much for just fainting. The man was still looking at her, and finally, he pressed a button on his wheelchair and it wheeled him over to her bed. Now, she was staring directly at him. He had very distinct, cold features, but all that she could think of was how a man as fine as him could be confined to a wheelchair. He had piercing eyes which bore into her each time he looked at her and a sharp chiseled jawline that seemed to have been car

Leilani leaned back, chuckling dryly as she stared at the man, hoping that he would laugh at his own joke too. But, he was unfazed. His lips didn’t even move. His eyes scrutinized her face like he was reading every detail on it, and his hands were clasped together on his thighs.“Y… you’re serious,” she stated when there was still no change in his facial expression.“Marry you?!” She widened her eyes and he only shrugged his shoulders off.“You have no idea what you’re talking about,”She shook her head. And he probably does not.First, he was asking a total stranger to marry him! Second, she was just getting the fuck out of a fucking marriage!“I mean every word of mine, Leilani. Marry me, and I will help you enact punishment on everyone who has hurt you. I will…”“What punishment?” she cut him short, frowning.“F… for someone who is meeting me for the first time, you seem too informed about me. Leilani watched as the man pressed a button from his wheelchair, and then it wheeled him back gently.“Where…” she trailed off when he wheeled to the door.“I will be expecting your answer, Leilani,” he said, and the door opened. She opened her mouth, wondering what had just happened, and then tilted her head.He was expecting her answer. She was definitely not going to accept his proposal but if by chance she wanted to, how the hell was she going to reach him?She had no phone with her and looking around the room, there was no contact card that the man might have left for her so she could reach him.“Very… weird,” she tilted her head and then adjusted gently. After a while of laying in the bed, with her eyes closed, the door slid open and she sprang up in alert as the unfamiliar, unfriendly-looking man trailed in.“Who…” she swallowed when he stopped by her bedside.“Boss asked me to give this to you,” he said and then dropped the box on the drawer beside her bed.He gave her a short

“I have heard that a lot of times,” she shook her head, giggling.“No, you really don’t understand me. Mia got out of the car stylishly, handed her car key to the security, and then rushed to the entrance after she had adjusted herself for the umpteenth time. Before she entered through the door that was held for her, she brought out her phone and a lip gloss, stared at her reflection on the screen, and then applied a bit of lip gloss again. Finally, she entered the restaurant, and then after she was attended to by the receptionist, she moved to her fixed seat which was closer to where she believed she could see the man.She settled in her seat, looking around for him, and when she didn’t see him in sight, she waved her hand at another waiter and he moved over to her.“Good afternoon, ma’am.”“Good. Get the hot waiter for me.”“Excuse me?”“I mean… get that waiter for me.”“Which one, please?”“Oh, he is not in sight, but there was one particular waiter here last week. He’s more finer than you, sorry, and he is extremely tall too. He is the owner here, he said.”“Ohhh…” the man drawled.

As she reached the glass door, someone opened it from behind, welcoming her in with a smile. The walls of the room were bright, well-illuminated, and filled with paintings assumed to be done by the alumni of the school. She spent about five minutes admiring the room, or even more but it still felt like it wasn't enough. She loved art so much, she couldn’t even hide it.Not at that moment.Oh, to finally be living in her dream!“You must be new here,” she heard an unfamiliar voice and then turned around swiftly.“Y… yeah, hi,” she blinked at the man who stood gracefully in front of her.He was fully suited up and she wondered if he worked here or if he was a student too."Hello, I’m Caleb," the young ma

They arrived home, and the driver hurriedly brought out Lorenzo’s wheelchair from the booth, helped him sit on it, and then moved away from him and his wife after he had bowed.“Where did you two love birds go so early this morning?” Came the voice of Martha and they both raised their heads to look at her.“Martha,” Leilani smiled.“And now, she smiles.”“What?”“You looked like your husband had been kidnapped a while back and had almost gone berserk,” she laughed.“Really?” Lorenzo raised his brows.“That is not true!” She defended and the man laughed gently.“She asked everyone in this perimeter where you were. It was as if she had received some threatening calls about you or something.”“Oh, Martha,” she rolled her eyes at the woman who wouldn’t stop talking and then smiled.“I was just worried, come on. This art school they were in was the biggest in the state, and maybe this man didn’t know that he was healing her inner child as the day passed. She collected it with shaky hands, stared at her name that was imprinted on it, Leilani Wheelers, and then nodded her head.“Do you wanna look around?” He asked her.“You may resume whenever you want, and classes start from twelve till three PM. "God! I'm so sorry." Leilani stepped back just as quickly as she had when she leaned in.What the hell was this? Why does she keep getting into the same mistake with the man? This was not the first time and she could only blame herself for letting the second one happen. She had told herself that since the marriage was just based on her having her revenge on Jonathan, there was no reason to open her heart to another man.But here she was, kissing him. It was an accident, at least, it had to be. She had to convince herself. On the other hand, Lorenzo didn't know how to react either. He just stood there with an expression Leilani couldn't quite place. At this point it was almost impossible to tell if it was shock, amusement, or desire. But what Lorenzo was feeling on his part was surprise. The woman had literally beat herself for having kissed him the last time that he thought she never would do something like that again."I... uh...
