Nevertheless, I wasn't going to be a jerk and tell Macy that. Furthermore, we hadn't seen the Cliffgards in three years. Perhaps Gertrude has changed for the better.

That may be a big maybe.

"Oh, how interesting," is my succinct reply. I strip with careful fingertips and slide into the outfit. My back is painfully constricted, and the fabric of the shirt irritates my skin like sandpaper. I try not to let the discomfort get to me though, and I pull on the black leather boots, tying the laces into a tight knot.

Macy and I will soon be prepared to leave. In the window light, her brown skin has a golden sheen that makes her appear to be shining.

"The Dining Room is on the first floor. Just keep heading east and you'll get there eventually. If you get lost, ask someone for directions. No one expects you to know the entire layout of the palace yet. Hell, even I still get lost sometimes."

I give Macy a smile. I stop and say, "I'll try my best." "I wish I could come with you, though. I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about all this."

I won't call her a friend just yet, but she is an ally none the less, and in the little time I've spent in this castle, Macy has been the only person who has been primarily by my side. She has somewhat diminished the palace's size and intimidating quality. I would be lost in her absence.

She smiles sorrowfully at me. "I know. I want the same thing, but don't sweat it. You'll be fine."

"Gratitude," I say to her. After doing so, we open the door and enter the hallway. Macy turns to the left. I turn right.

I move toward the east side of the palace, as Macy has instructed. I walk with a pounding head and a knotted stomach from worrying about what's ahead. I try to divert my attention by thinking back on my session with Greta and everything she taught me. Despite what I had thought at first, Macy and Greta had been correct; having been a nobleman had given me an advantage in topic knowledge. Greta reported that we had completed the syllabus twice as quickly as usual. She would also attribute it to my intelligence, but I don't believe I'm that intelligent. Simply said, my memory is good.

When more and more royal people start wandering the halls, I know I'm in the proper spot. Guards scurry about, and maids bustle about. I follow them, and after a while I go through the last set of stairs and enter a lobby. There are two big double doors thrown open across from me, and as I hear the faint murmur of excited conversation leaving the room, I know I'm in the proper place.

I inhale deeply as I traverse the lobby's dimly lit tiles and pause to straighten my blouse. With my head held high and my shoulders back, I enter the Dining Room.

The dining room is very lovely. The walls of cobblestone are adorned with gold and silver tapestries. Between them, bracket torches flicker, and the orange-painted heavens above are visible through a dome-shaped skylight in the roof. Guards line the walls, their long broadswords with black hilts fastened at their sides as they stand at attention. The front of the room is lined with rows and rows of long, dark ash-wood tables and seats, all of which are empty. The front table is the only one that is in use; the maids hover around it while they wait for orders.

There are various reasons why my heart falters. The royal family is seated right there, to start with. As in... SITTING THERE, on high-backed black chairs upholstered in deep purple velvet. They are rapidly absorbed by my eyes. They really are just as the legends have depicted them. Galen, the king, had golden eyes and hair that's jet black. With her ice-blue eyes and beautiful brown hair, Queen Selene exudes grace and elegance.

Prince Kohl as well. What shocks me the most is his appearance. I didn't think he would appear that pale, his skin appearing stark against the dark clothing. Like his father, he has dark hair, but in the torchlight, it takes on a dark, almost navy hue. Additionally, his eyes...

As pure gold as his father's. An authentic Gahndor. The eyes of no other wolf are golden.

There's also the less romantic explanation for my heart's stutter. The girls of the Queenstrials are gathered around the big table that the royals sit at. I feel an intense and powerful wave of envy that nearly knocks me back. They are all dressed in exquisite gowns that would be impossible for even a noble to obtain. The overly black table is illuminated by silk, satin, and sequins of every color, all accessorized with extravagant haircuts and matching makeup. The knowledge that I ought to be with them, feeling beautiful, and sporting an exquisite clothing...

I gulp. It's going to be more difficult than I anticipated.

I move slowly in the direction of the center table. I look around the walls to see if I recognize anyone. I recognize a couple of the maids and guards from when I first arrived, but other than that, nothing. That is, until I catch a glimpse of sharp green eyes and a mop of golden locks. The guards at his sides have serious expressions on their faces, but Alex gives me a big smile. I smile back, my cheeks burning as I

immediately avert my gaze. What the devil am I doing wrong today?

I sneak one more peek at the table as I get closer to it. I look straight at Althea, and that toxic jealousy pierces me once more. Her skin has a special radiance, and her red silk dress draws attention to her curves. Her hair appears to be wearing a crown since it has been braided around the front of her head. Her skin tone is flawlessly matched by the golden pendants that dangle down from her neck and ears.

Our gazes lock. She gives me a sly smile that conveys more than words could ever hope to. I am better than you.

I avert my gaze. My heart hurts in my chest. Right now, I really don't need Althea to shove her accomplishment in my face.

As I walk by the table, I also manage to meet Jade's eyes. Her eyes are not filled with contempt, unlike Althea's. She seemed worried, even apologetic.

But I don't want her to feel guilty. She is stunning in her green dress. It complements her eyes.

I let my imagination wander a little as I take my spot along the rear wall with the other maids, standing to have a good look at everyone at the table. I can practically see myself wearing a garment that is pale pink and adorned with trails of crimson silk and purple sequins. I picture myself seated among them, my cosmetics and hair done, ready to dazzle the prince.

My gaze returns to Kohl. I can see more details up close. I like how he looks at the gals and has a slight grimace on his face, like he's not happy with his choice. ... the black shirt he's wearing, which is covered with onyx pauldrons and a grey vest. I also see that he has a tiny silver chain around his neck, with a pendant that eerily resembles the fangs of another wolf.

I was skeptical at first, but now that I'm seeing Prince Kohl, the rumors Macy brought up make more sense. His demeanor was so closed off, his look so frigid, that I would not have been astonished if he had been cursed. Though I haven't encountered many harsh people, the ones I have always had this similar appearance—that is, what he currently has. I find myself thinking that perhaps he is truly incapable of experiencing love because I find it impossible for him to smile at the alter with any of these girls. It would make sense, after all, since Gahndors are unable to mate.

On the other hand, I am mute. Despite my sisters having found their partners already, I haven't paired up with anyone either. Jade hasn't turned down a wealthy city man, but I don't think she'll get married. It was unexpected to learn that Althea was a poor boy from a wolf city's periphery. It seems that she had gone by him while on a trip with our mother. The youngster had been demanding to meet Althea at our estate for a few months after that. Althea had no desire for it. He was too impoverished and too simple by her standards. Not surprisingly, she turned down the poor bastard, and not in a tactful manner either. She did it in broad daylight, in front of his loved ones. Afterward, she laughed about it, laughing at the boy's naivete in believing he would ever have a chance with her.

I turn to see Althea talking to the Lunous girl next to her. Perhaps she is also cursed with cruelty.

Silver platters laden with flavorful delicacies eventually make their way to the table, where I and a few other maids are left to serve portions. By the time I find my way back to the wall, my cheeks are burning again, and I avoid making eye contact with any of my sisters. I take my time watching the competitors as they eat. I decide that the girl from Nirnsich is the most attractive, and that's why Althea was chatting with her. She has also identified her as her biggest opponent, therefore I assume she abides by the adage "keep your friends close, but your enemies closer."But when I look at each face more closely, I realize how unique they are all. I wander around the palace for what seems like hours until I eventually locate Gertrude's room. The gold-painted letters 'G. Cliffgard' are painted on the door, so I know it's hers.I stop to breathe and wrap my hand around the knob before twisting it open to hear voices coming from inside.I am instantly struck by how wonderful the lady's suite is, far nicer than my chamber in the maid's quarters. Pressed up against the wall is a four-poster bed with a gossamer curtain; two nightstands on either side are piled high with hair clips and makeup. The room's lone window is positioned next to a white dresser, and I can see a doorway leading to an ensuite on the right wall.Gertrude is sitting in front of her white vanity mirror, touching up her lips with scarlet lipstick, and I watch Macy folding clothes. There's a peculiar tension in the air when our eyes meet in the mirror. She appears significantly older today, as if she had aged by ten years instead of just three. Her grey-blue eyes ap

I felt numb when I woke up this morning. Well, numb first, then terrified. In my fantasies, Sarah braided my hair while I was back in my old room, watching the sun come up. I was at ease as I sat in the cozy familiarity of my former house, feeling her nails against my head. And then I woke up in a strange room, lying on an uncomfortable bed with wafer-thin sheets wrapped around me. Then everything came back to me: being sent as a maid to the Gahndor Palace, the ride here, the First Feast, getting to know the royal family, Gertrude's taunts, and Prince Kohl's threat.I turn my sheets so that I can see the girl kneeling on her bed in the corner of the room, folding her pajamas. I do recall that this has resulted in at least one positive outcome. Her hazel eyes swivel to face me. When our eyes meet, hers brighten up. "Morning, Naomi! Sleep well?""Yes," I tell a fib. The sickly sweet smell of roses welcomes me. Rose gardens quickly encircle me, all neatly hemmed in by vibrant green hedges. The gravel walk that winds through the courtyard is dotted with trees that offer protection from the sun's rays. I start to move while attempting to relax and even out my breathing.Something blue twitches on the dirt path as I move. Glancing down, I see a small blue bird flying wildly as the other hangs helplessly by its side.My heart aches, and I cup the small bird in my palms before I can stop myself. It snaps at the touch, defending itself by pecking at my hand, but I immediately quiet it and draw it in closer to my chest."There, there. I'm not going to hurt you," I'm whispering. The bird's beady eyes pop up to examine my face, pit less and black. Even still, as I gently prod the wing, it stops resisting and instead holds still, and I feel a small sense of trust in it.It's broken, broken exactly like my nose probably is. But unlike a bird's wing, my nose

The maids' hall is buzzing with an odd noise. Girls jump excitedly in and out of each other's rooms while giggling and chatting. This isn't the only place in the kingdom where I've seen this vibe, though. This morning, I even detected a similar buzz in the air at breakfast. I guess I can understand why. Today is the opening round of the tournament and the first day of my first week as a maid. Feeling rejuvenated from my morning shower, I walk along the hallways wrapped in a white towel and can't help but let my thoughts wander. I've focused more on Jade and Althea throughout the training sessions than I have on Gertrude. Even though I support Jade, I have no doubt that Althea will easily defeat any opponent in her match. Throughout history, Althea has outperformed Jade in strength and heart of heart. The smile she shot me the next day informed me nothing had changed at all, contrary to my hopes that perhaps her standing up to Gertrude had signaled a change in her heart. I locate my

Excellent," Alex replies, standing taller than me in his human shape. He was tall, but he's grown even taller since then. He kneels next to me and transforms into a wolf in an instant. His brown skin turns to blonde fur, and his piercing green eyes don't go away when his beast fully emerges. He is really tall compared to me. I damn myself for not being taller. He lets his mouth drop. He says, "Right," in a wolf-like, gravelly voice. "So, I know I said I'm all for the basics, but I think you'll learn a little faster if I throw you into the deep end."My wolf-like features twitch into a frown. "What do you mean?" "I mean... this."He jumps on me with the speed of light and throws his weight against me. I let out a startled gasp as his weight pushes me into the floor."What the hell!" I exclaim, feeling heat shoot up my sharp cheekbones. Even fluster, it seems, won't let me go from my wolf form.Alex gives me a wolf-like smile. He presses down on my shoulders for emphasis. My lungs are straining as I haul my bag up another flight of steps, and I moan.I remind myself as I look up at the granite tile peak, only a few more. With each slow breath, I curse Kohl, and when at last I reach the top, it takes everything I have not to fall into the wall. His new room, which is situated just beneath the spiral staircase that leads to his room in the spire, was what he had ordered for me. I had disagreed with him about this, partly because I hadn't wanted to leave Macy behind and partly because moving seemed like a drag after settling in. But there was no disputing with the prince. I had thus made both of us feel better by handing Macy a copy of my key, which Kohl had created at my request, following an incredibly emotional farewell with her. After telling her that she was welcome to stop by at any time, I put my whole wardrobe into a suitcase and left. But I'm not concerned about Macy. Following the event, she had been fired by Gertrude and was now working in the

When Kohl finally reaches the top of the table, he exclaims, "We've made good progress," clutching the back of his seat. We still don't have a solid suspect in mind for this whole thing. Then and only then can we launch a planned, comprehensive attack."I blinked, gazing at Kohl as he examines each of his councils. It dawns on me then just how good of a liar he is. None of these people, who presumably put their trust in him, are aware that he actually has a suspect on the case, and that person happens to be his father. He is lying to their faces, and when his eyes flit to mine, I can see that they are devoid of regret. Once more, he doesn't feel bad about lying, which makes me reevaluate every opinion I have of him.He strikes the back of his chair a few moments later. "All right. Dismissed. Please keep a look out for any unusual activity and let me know when you come across it. Remain alert. Remain vigilant."At that point, the council members get up and start to file out of the buil

Prince Kohl looks at me like he's angry. I'm sure he thinks I'm going to piss now. "Did you not see the burns on her face? Of course there was boiling water in that godsdamned pitcher, what else could it have been?"I keep quiet. Prince Kohl must have seen the burns as well, not because of his elevated voice. Additionally, I am certain that the pitcher did not contain any hot water. But before I can consider it further, Prince Kohl lets out a sigh. Then he motions for me to follow as he passes by. "Come with me.""Where?""To my quarters. You're part of my council now, so it's time I introduce you to the others."I flinch. "I thought I was just going to be your maid?""No," he answers. He's quiet for a short while. He continues, "You will be my spy from now on," but I can't see his faceI stare at Kohl in shock. I'm positive that I misheard. "Pardon?" He looks at me slantwise. My face is crimson. I feel like I'm burning, I'm so red. I see scarlet. My face is flushed. I am filled with excitement as I gaze at Gertrude's coiled body, trembling and groveling. I want her to suffer. Her tears pierce my heart, and I realize that I want to hurt her even more. Every sharp note that they make just serves to fan the flames of my inner fire. They ring in my ears. I take up an iron mace from the weapons rack, its weight firm and heavy in my hand, and my movements don't even feel like mine.I look at her intently. My desire is to strike her until she bleeds. She can't breathe, she won't stop crying, and all she can do is apologize profusely for all she's done. That's why I want to beat her.I have no one observing me. I take a bite out of my chicken. Since we were both released from the safe room two days ago by two guards who just so happened to be inspecting every safe room, Alex and I have not spoken. However, I haven't had a conversation with anyone I was in that room with. Kairi appears to have stayed away from any keeping in touch with everyone she was with that evening, and Prince Kohl is being... Okay, so... Kohler, Prince.I glanced in the direction of the front table. The Ladies of Queenstrial eat dinner with the Prince Kohl and his parents in their ornate chairs. The Ounsli girl, Bronte, is still here, albeit she is severely cut and bruised from her altercation with the Lunous girl. The Queenstrials' first round was declared void due to the assaults, and it was rescheduled for tomorrow. I believe the monarch is making a determined step to show the attackers, whoever they may be, that the spirit of Gahndor endures. However, I doubt they'll be able to maintain that pretense for very long,

He sets me down against the wall, and a strange warmth flutters in my stomach as he wraps one of the big blankets around my shoulders. My cheeks flame, and I feel humiliated as I admit, "I have very slow healing, but... it is healing. Don't worry about it." Alex looks concerned, but sensing my concern, changes the subject. "Thank god we made it in here" "Yeah," I agree, trying to keep my breaths even as my heart begins to calm down. The last place I want to go into heart failure is in a safe room when the palace is under attack. That's when I feel eyes boring into my temple.
