The humid night air in Savannah offered little relief for Tessa as she stood in the dark corner of the balcony.
Held hostage in Rafik’s arms for three songs, her hands still wiggled with a life of their own as she drew a drag of one of her father’s Marlboro’s.
A familiar raspy, Norwegian voice came to her ears as he snatched the cigarette from her fingers. “Don’t you know those things will kill you, Tess?”
The handsome, blonde man took a puff and handed it back to her as he blew out smoke from the side of his mouth.
His ridiculous warning made her roll her eyes as she took another drag. They were both immortal creatures, and the only thing that would ever kill her was a hefty dose of bloody violence. “You first, you old bastard.”
A throaty cackle echoed through the street below as she glanced back over and laughed at him while she took in the spectacle of a thousand-year-old Viking in a well-tailored tuxedo. “You clean up well, Haldir. You should wear a tux more often. Even I’m a little weak in the knees, and I can’t stand your ugly face.”
With a tug at his collar, Haldir stretched out his neck. “Shut up, you spoiled fucking brat. I always look good.”
He snapped his fingers at her, and she gave him the cigarette, then he squinted his eyes at her as he puffed on it.
There the day she was born and just about every day after, he knew her better than most anyone. “Why are you hiding out here? That doesn’t seem like something you would do; you’re a natural-born, grade-A drama queen.”
She snatched back the cigarette and sucked back the last drag before dropping it on the floor and twisting it under her shoe. “It’s a fucking meat market in there. These people should be ashamed of themselves for selling out their children like that for a bit of power.”
A raspy chuckle came through his toothy smile at how funny things appeared through the eyes of a child as he peered across the park. “Trust me. Someday, you’re going to love all these men falling at your feet, Tessa.”
When he noticed someone approaching from the corner of his eye, Haldir straightened up from the wall he leaned on. “Well, looky here; there’s the head of your fan club. I guess hogging you all to himself on the dance floor all night wasn’t enough.”
The nervous boy had his hands in his pockets as he waited for her to finish her conversation. In faux annoyance, she rolled her eyes, but her grin gave her away. “Stalker is more like it.”
With a tug into his shoulder, Haldir kissed the top of her head. “Enjoy it while it lasts, Tess. That first taste of love is always the best. You’ll chase it all your life, but it will never be that sweet again.”
Before he turned away to give Rafik his turn with the birthday girl, he snapped his fingers and pointed at her. “Are we still playing cards tomorrow night?”
A sneaky smile came to her face as she crossed her arms and kicked at a brick. “Why? Are you in a hurry to lose a whole bunch more of your money to me? You can save yourself a lot of trouble and hand it over to me now.”
He slid his hand in his pocket and rummaged around. “Sure, hold on a second. Wait, I got something better.” Suddenly pulling it back out of his pocket, he flipped her the middle finger. “See you at dinner tomorrow, you nasty little vixen.”
“She’s all yours, son.” He patted the young man’s shoulder as he passed by, then held his finger up to his nose in warning. “Be good to her.”
A timid smile came to Rafik’s face as he nodded quickly. “Certainly, sir.” Freeing his hands from his pockets, he crossed his arms as he walked to Tessa. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere.”
With twisted lips, she shrugged her shoulders as she tried to act unaffected by his presence, but the sound of his voice was like the Pied Piper leading her away from whatever innocence remained in her. “Why?”
No matter how she avoided looking in his eyes, he moved in front of her and made sure she could turn nowhere else. “I wanted to dance with you again.”
Her father’s advice was nearly a memory now as she grabbed the pearls around her neck and wrapped them around her fingers. “I don’t want to dance anymore if you don’t mind.”
After he glanced around the balcony, he motioned towards the bench with his hand. “Can we sit down and talk awhile?”
With a quick shake of her head, her signature untrusting sneer curled up on her face. “You don’t have to play this game with me anymore.”
Her sharp tongue cut deep, and he leaned against the half wall behind him to brace himself against the pain. “What do you mean? What game?”
The words coming from her were like a knife stabbing her throat as they found their way into the world. “I know why everyone’s here tonight, but I’m not interested. Your family will have to figure out some other way to climb the social ladder here.”
His heart sank through the center of him, and his eyes followed the sensation to the ground. “I didn’t come here for that, but when I saw you…” His teary eyes met hers, and he put his hand over his heart. “I had to touch you. To hear your voice just once, Rohi.”
He grasped her hand and rubbed his fingers over them. “But now, I want more.”
Her shoulders pitched up and down, and she lost focus of the entire world as the Fates wove their magic around them. “What’s happening to me? Are you using some kind of spell on me?”
Whispered no’s came from his mouth as he came closer, and his fingers bent into his palm as he resisted the urge to grab her like his soul begged him. “I could do nothing to harm you.” His body hovered against hers as he glanced down at her lips. “I’m your mate.”
As Rafik’s shivering fingertips caressed the delicate curve of her jaw, she closed her eyes. “You can’t be.”
He edged closer to her face, and his nose grazed her skin as he savored the calm before the storm. “Why not?”
The little pink tongue that crossed her lips to moisten them told the truth despite what her voice tried to convince her of as she panted against his mouth. “I don’t believe in that.”
With his hand around her cheek, he tilted her face to his. “Have you ever kissed anyone before?”
The moment her chin slid back and forth across his palm to answer him, he smiled as his lips brushed hers. “You were waiting for me, weren’t you?”
Her entire body shivered against him as the anticipation of his kiss overwhelmed her. “Yes.”
He admired Fate’s masterpiece that he held in his hand before he kissed her for just a moment, but that was all Tessa needed to ignite the fire inside her veins.
When he pulled away, her knees buckled, sending her back into his chest. “Are you alright, Rohi?”
The first happy tear she ever shed escaped her eyes as they fluttered open. A drunken smile came to her face, and her smooth Southern drawl demanded more. “Oh, won’t you please do it again?”
“As you wish.” His hand slid to the back of her head then he sucked her bottom lip between his. He took his sweet time moving against her lips as she whimpered into his mouth and wrapped her arms around his neck.
Hot cocoa had nothing on Rafik; it wasn’t even close. His lips were like chocolate and candy canes and birthday cake and every other pleasant thing that ever met her tongue.
When the sounds of giggles and feet reached her ears as another couple came to make out on the balcony, she pulled away from him and licked the last traces of him off her mouth.
Panic set in when she freed from his embrace, and he grabbed Tessa’s wrist as she attempted to make her escape. “Please, don’t leave me, Rohi.”
She shook her head but never once struggled to break his grasp. “Why do you keep calling me that?”
He placed his fingertips in the center of his chest as he explained why he spoke of her so lovingly. “It means soulmate. I feel you here; can’t you feel it?”
Her bottom lip trembled as she nodded her head yes. While her shaking legs struggled to decide which direction to take her in, she tried to bring herself back to reality. “I don’t want this. I’m too young to find you.”
He pulled her to him and backed her to the wall as he laid claim to his mate. “It doesn’t matter what we want; this is as providence decrees.”
Every word from his mouth was wrapped in magic, and she couldn’t think of a single objection as his arms swallowed her up into them. He curled her hair around his fingers and breathed in the gentle hint of summer strawberries as he brought them to his nose.
They clung to each other in silence on the dark corner of the balcony until her heavy eyes betrayed her. The warm spicy scent of cloves and cinnamon that dripped from Rafik’s pores rocked her to sleep as she rose and fell against the comfort of his chest.
He pressed his lips against her forehead as he racked his brain to find a way to squeeze out a few more minutes with her. “May I kiss you again before you go?”
An uncomfortable blush came to her cheeks as she nodded. He pressed his lips to hers and moved his hand up her cheek. “Good night, Rohi. I will relive this night in my dreams until you are in my arms again.”
Not wanting to let the entire world in on their secret, she took back her hand as they entered the ballroom and walked to her family’s table.
Her brother’s eyes rarely left her, so he shook his head and spoke to her in her mind as she tried to slide in unnoticed. ‘Where have you been all evening, Jezebel?’
She narrowed her eyes, warning him to say nothing else, and wrinkled her nose as she answered. ‘None of your goddamn business. Can we go now? I can’t keep my eyes open anymore.’
Although she had an eventful night, he had his fill of fake smiles and ass-kissing, so he turned to his father. “Is it alright if we leave?”
Even at their young age, they were more than able to fend for themselves against even the trickiest witch. There weren’t many creatures alive that could take on twin Firestarters.
Jasper glanced back and forth between his children and raised his finger as his pointy eyebrow cautioned them to do as he said. “Go straight home. I mean it.”
As they approached the Idrissi’s table, her eyes snapped to Rafik’s, and she shot him a timid smile. He touched the middle of his forehead and placed his hand over his heart, making her peek away bashfully before she slid her hand to her chest in reply.
The twins joined their hands as a black cloud swept over their feet while they walked, and the ballroom splintered into shards of existence that spun around them until the children vanished into nothing.
The incoming arrival’s whistle pierced through the wobbly reality of the mansion, making way for the brilliant spark to punch through. A foul blast of brimstone swept from the portal then through the calm, checkered foyer, warning all who dwelled there that the fiery twins had returned.A wicked, squealing wind wailed in their ears as the house built up around them again, block by block. When the black-and-white floor rose to meet the slick bottom of her shoes, the breath of life rushed into Tessa’s lungs again. “Move!”She pushed away from Teddy’s grasp, and the clicks of her heels were like a hundred tiny horses galloping across the foyer as she raced to the mirror. While he shook the moist remains of his mist away from his hands, Teddy pointed his finger at his sister. “You know, our parents spent the evening planning your future with that boy, Tessa. For a girl who doesn’t believe in being fated to someone, you sure
The smoke-filled parlor was sticky with the smell of Haldir’s cigar and more than a few beer bottles littering the card table. Staring down the greatest poker player he ever met, he threw in his stack of money. “So, tell me about Mr. Lover Boy, Tess. He seemed like a sweet kid. What’s his name?”While she examined her hand of cards, she glanced up over them to the blue-eyed immortal. “Well, if you must know, you damn busy body, it’s Rafik Idrissi.”“Idrissi? You got to be shitting me.” While Jasper drew two more and gave them to her, Haldir glared at him. “How in the fuck did this come about?”His disapproving eyes narrowed and warned Haldir to hold his tongue. “Those days are behind us. All those ancient rivalries need to end. It’s in all our best interest to negotiate this thing in good faith.”Her suspicious eyes glanced back and forth between the two of them as Teddy l
“I don’t have a good feeling about this.” With her hand on her belly, Isabelle rubbed at the little one trying to get her attention while they strolled down Jones Street. The waning moon glowed red in the sky above her as the thunder started in the distance, setting her psychic tendencies abuzz in prickly alarms that rose from her arms.As he peeked behind him to make sure the children were out of earshot, Jasper agreed. “No, I don’t like any of this either, but I don’t believe he would hurt his son’s mate, especially not in his own home.”With the brick mansion of her ancient enemy coming up before them, she rolled her teary eyes away. “She’s too young.”He slid his arm around her and pulled her into his side. “She’s not getting hitched anytime soon, baby. We’re stuck with that smart mouth for at least another decade. Shit! That boy may change his mind about the whole thi
A whistle soaked in the stench of sulfur fell from the air in the foyer as the black ball of mist spread out like little fingers in every direction. As it faded away, the only thing that remained was Teddy with Tessa tucked tight against him. “I got you. We made it.”The feverish hands tugged at his chest when they balled his shirt in them. A shrill whimper built at the back of Tessa’s throat as her fat bottom lip quivered. “They killed them.”He gritted his teeth and blinked up to the ceiling to halt the sting of tears and hide them from her. They were twin flames, and when one lost control, the other followed along until the spark became an Armageddon. With his hands on her shoulders, he bent down to look into her eyes. “Go grab our bugout bags and meet me right here. Find Momma and Daddy’s too. Go on! Be quick.”When he heard her little feet start beating against the stairs, he rubbed his neck and took a
The dark mist cleared into the night that surrounded him in little specks of charred coals as Teddy scanned the poorly lit parking lot and the rain poured down over them. “Alright, Tess. We’re here. You’re going to be okay now.”Like he was on the road to deliverance from the nightmare they found themselves immersed in, he staggered across the parking lot towards the emergency department sign. “Third, you’re Sean and Sara Osulf now. Your father is Howard. Sean and Sara Osulf, your father is Howard.”For being so petite, she was like a floppy, wet sack of hundred-pound potatoes the way her limbs flailed around as he walked. He tried to keep hold as he gritted his teeth, then stopped and tossed her up in the air. “It’s okay. I got you. Had to move you around a little; you’re slippery as hell.”The blast of air that beat down on them when they came through the automatic doors splattered her bl
The bed dipped down as Haldir shoved his knee on it, and he lowered Tessa on the sheet. After he covered her shoulders with the blanket, he glanced at Teddy as he sat on the edge of the bed facing the wall. “Have you been able to reach her yet?”The crushing sensation began in his head and radiated through his body as Teddy’s mind got sucked into a dark room.On the edge of that cliff she always teetered on, Tessa stared over the side as she swung back and forth and hummed out a song he couldn’t place. After he snapped his fingers in front of her, he tapped on her shoulder. “Are you done yet, Tess?”He blinked out of his trance when she didn’t answer him and shook his head no. “I can see her now, but she isn’t ready to talk yet.” His back jerked as he huffed out his mouth and shook his head. “You’re not going to believe this shit, but I think she’s dancing.”Haldir pushed
In the darkness of the bedroom that surrounded him, Haldir tried to drift off to sleep. Teddy said a spell of protection over the thin, wooden door, but he didn’t trust the warlock’s skill yet.Once he relaxed enough to let his mind wander in the celestial plane, he envisioned Tessa in his mind. Not the little girl that laid beside her brother in the other bed as weak and helpless as the day she was born, but the one she was meant to be.She glowed as bright as the angry sun on the hottest day as she walked through the fields of her enemies and cackled in her witchy way as she laid them all to waste.Dreadful and beautiful, the oldest of warlocks bowed down before Tessa in reverence as they witnessed her carnage. The Queen of Ruin returned, and even the devil himself feared her.He squinted through the flames and black smoke as he followed her and her beasts through the field of war-torn bodies until he noticed a familiar form on horseback in
“Jesus, will you go tell your sister to hurry up? We’re going to be late.” Haldir checked his cuff link with his arm turned over as Teddy admired his hair in the mirror.“Yeah, I’m on it.” His handmade leather shoes slid across the marble floor as he passed through the villa, and the waves crashed against the rocky cliffs outside the windows while the Mediterranean breeze swept through the home. His knuckles bounced off the doorway he leaned against as he knocked on it. “We’re waiting on you.”While she slid her hands down her waist, Tessa turned to the side and took in the splendor of her own loveliness in the full-length mirror. “Yes, I’m aware, but something that looks this amazing is worth waiting a few extra minutes on, don’t you think?”The makeshift family was in hiding for ten years, and now that the danger was over, they appeared in public under their proper names witho
The crushing silence pushed on Haldir’s ears, and the piercing whistle it made lifted the little hairs on his arms when he noticed the sounds of Tessa humming and chattering to herself didn’t resonate in the hall this morning. Finding something else to occupy her time with should have made him happy, but whenever she had a second of peace like that, it sent a shiver through him because it was usually just the pause before a storm that left her bathed in blood. The pads of his fingertips pulsed with a rush of fear when he gripped the doorway, and he closed his eyes before he made the corner. Twice he found her near death right there on her floor, and he swore to himself that the third time, he wouldn&
The click, click, click of the metal fan that was beating itself to death in the window blew the cool night air across Tessa’s face as it chased away the last of her fever. Blue eyes blinked up to it, and a puff of amusement shot from Haldir’s nose that even in a building full of witches, they couldn’t make it work right.Pushing back the stray hairs from her cheek, he tucked them behind her ear before he leaned over and kissed her forehead. “Do you need anything before I go?”Faint clicks of breaths echoed around her throat until her dry lips parted enough to answer. “I’m okay.”With nothing but doubts in his mind, he pressed his head to hers and hoped he would see more hopeful things in her future. “I’ll be back tomorrow. You be a good girl until I come home, and we’ll go visit Father Michael if you want.”The only sound escaping her mouth was the clucking, halted breaths that came
“Hold on. I’m coming.” Dabbing at her hair with a fluffy, white towel, Stella answered the front door. “Come on in.”Closing the door behind them, Jacob’s eyes darted across the living room in search of Teddy. “Is he ready to go?”As she glanced over her shoulder at the bedroom door, she nodded. “Yeah, he’s getting dressed. You guys want some coffee?”Wrapping his arm around her shoulder, Logan kissed her temple. “Yeah, that’d be great.”When
With the weight of all those eyes burning through him, it made it a bit hard to chew, but Teddy simply gave his signature grin and enjoyed the homecooked meal. Growing up with Haldir’s poor attempts at cuisine and a string of paid chefs made having a sweet, loving mother like Kathy Hexom fix his dinner so much better. The Lycan mate he found himself failed to mention she had twin fathers and twin brothers and, despite his charms, they all stared straight through him without an ounce of mercy.“So, where are you from?” The father with reddish-blonde hair, Robert, crossed his tattoed arms as he pushed himself back in his seat and waited for an answer.Knowing that his past would undoubtedly come back to haunt him someday, Teddy took a second to clear his throat and set down his fork as he readied himself. “Savannah, sir.”Ready to take his turn at making Teddy uncomfortable, Warren, the father with pale blonde hair and the same
“Pick up the fucking phone, Teddy.” The creepy cries and cackles bounced off the windows that overlooked the courtyard as Tessa danced all by herself to the melody in her head. Even for a man like Haldir, who had been everywhere and done everything, her behavior was beyond bizarre. With his arms crossed against his chest, he rolled his eyes as he kept watch and listened to another of his calls go unanswered. He wasn’t blind to her deteriorating state, and short of keeping her by his side night and day, there was little he could do without Teddy releasing her. When the hallucination set her free at last
The shrill noise of Tessa’s drunken cackle ricocheted through the second floor like a stray bullet that hit him right in the head as Teddy straightened his tie in the foyer mirror. The little monster he created was making him crazy, and he rolled his eyes at the sound of her voice.Too frustrated to work his fingers, he clenched his jaw and ripped the fabric from his neck. “Fuck!”The old Viking appeared behind him and motioned by bending his fingers. The tension building between the twins was at the boiling point, and he hoped a distraction might bring them back to baseline. “Turn around; I got this.”
“Where are you hiding?” Slumped down on Tessa’s bed, Teddy clicked his tongue as his eyes scanned the bedroom. He had searched every corner for traces of her husband, and the one thing she treasured most was missing. It was the one thing he could never let her find again. “Not in your bag, not in your drawers, not in your closet. Where would she stash you?”As he lowered himself down into the spot she slept in, he closed his eyes and tried to imagine her lying there. The tingle spread through his fingers as Fate intervened and whispered to his cells to follow them along their cruel path to his ruin. The tight pull on his hand guided Teddy upwards along the soft, white down comforter.
The storm beat against the infirmary window as Teddy glared down at the street below. He stood cross-armed against the cool, damp metal frame as he watched the beads of water bounce up off the street under the orange glow of the lamps. When he glanced back over his shoulder at Tessa, he choked out the guilt and shame of it all as he slapped his hand over his mouth to keep quiet. Bent over in agony, Teddy hiccupped back the soft sobs of his contrition for what he failed to do and what he was about to do.Tonight was a blurry mess of chaos, but standing there by her bedside now, Teddy realized he had no one to blame but himself, and it broke him. Everything that followed this moment resulted from sheer panic.
“I will.” A puff of steam left Tessa’s mouth in a misty white cloud when she swallowed down the taste of Rafik’s soul as his bloody lips moved with hers. “Tell her I love her.”The lingering sensation of him inside her made the sleeping witch writhe underneath her heavy blankets. The memory of him making love to her took over every instinct that told her he was gone from this world. As his hot kisses moved across her neck, she whispered out to him again. “I will.”When the worst of things came back to her, Tessa’s eyes snapped open, and she blinked away the ugly visions.
