I did not want to immediately jump to conclusions but the faint scent lingering here in this room was of the same peppermint smell of Arsen. I could not be wrong… I hope. With my feet leading me towards the direction where the scent was coming from, I forgot the fact that I was actually wearing a pair of one-inch high heels which I was still not used to.
The room was dim-lit with only one lamp on the corner as the source of light. All I could see on the chair beside it was the half silhouette of a man wearing formal attire.
“Arsen, I have been looking…”
The words coming out from my mouth ceased when a loud thud and a huff from me filled the room when I tripped on my own foot. I grunted in pain as I got back on my feet and fixed my dress as it almost displayed my entire chest. It was a good thing that it was a bit darker inside, making it almost impossible for this man to see what just happened.
“I’m sorry,” I apologized. “I am a bit clumsy at times.”
An embarrassed giggle escaped my mouth but the man still remained quiet. As if affecting the whole atmosphere inside the room, I felt a cold shiver run down my spine when I noticed that the man was looking at me with a sharp look as his chin leaned on the back of his hand. I gulped.
“If you are an escort, you should refrain from spouting the name of your previous clients.” His voice was unlike before… it sounded like a warning this time as if I had made a grave mistake.
Well, I do understand where he was coming from but I was just sure that he was the vessel of Arsen. But how could he not recognize me? He should be able to have the memories of Arsen as well. What was exactly going on?
“I apologize.” I paused for a while, still trying to think how he could not know Arsen. “I came here to escort you back to your place.”
That was all I could say. What if I was wrong? That was also possible, given that he seemed to have no memories of my lover. It was just… it was just that his peppermint scent was exactly the same as his.
I snapped out of my thoughts when I saw the man get up from his seat. He was a head taller than me so I found him more intimidating than he already was. I turned on my heels and was about to head to the door but he spoke.
“What are you doing?”
“O-Opening the door for you… sir?”
Was that not supposed to be the thing to do? Was I supposed to let him do the opening of the door?
My eyes widened when I saw him reach out his hand in my direction.
“Come here.” The way he said that sounded like he was giving me no choice to speak or even reject him so I walked towards him and put my hand. Without any warning, he pulled me close and his other hand held my jaw as he forced me to face him. His piercing gaze made me look away from him and it was frustrating because that was also the effect I receive from Arsen every time he wanted to look into my eyes.
Slowly returning my gaze at him, I could not help but think that the person in front of me was no one else but the human being I was looking for. His grayish eyes were totally different from Arsen's silvery ones.
“You look pretty decent. I heard you badly need some money.”
“What of it?”
“We should go to a more private place. This place is more disgusting than I imagined it to be.”
And just like that, the man who did not even bother introducing himself whisked me away from the bar with Julian waving his hand full of money. I bet that was the ones we earned this night after I finished dancing. That guy! He better be giving me my share after dealing with this client!
Julian did not shout but I saw him mouth good luck at me. I only glared at him but all he returned was a giggle. After I was forced into some black car that almost resembled a wafer with how low its roof was, the car door was slammed right in front of me.
The man got inside the car as well and started the engine. There was silence between the two of us while he drove and since I was not much of a conversation starter, I simply looked out of the window. If one thing in this human realm was better than in the realm of immortals, it would be what they called city lights. Every night, I could not help but be amazed at how they looked like several stars shining upon this city.
“As an escort, should you not be leading a conversation with me?” the man suddenly asked.
I repositioned myself and looked in front of me. I clasped my hands together and did not spare him a single glance.
“I apologize but this is really the first time I become an escort so I do not know what to say… or even do.”
For some reason, I felt a bit embarrassed so I turned my head to the side, afraid of what his reaction would be. I thought he would be criticizing me so I shut my eyes and prepared for whatever stabbing comments he would say. However, several minutes had passed and we came to a sudden stop yet he did not say anything else.
I looked out of the window and found myself being amazed at the large mansion in front of me. Just like in the land of the Silver Foxes where Arsen ruled over, this place also had an exquisite fountain. These kinds of decorations never cease to surprise me as they do not exist in Oliviland. Well, having a fountain in our kingdom surrounded by a vast desert would simply waste the water so we never had one.
I snapped out of my thoughts when the man got out of his car. He did not have any plans on opening the door for me so I opened it myself and followed him. At the entrance of the mansion stood an elderly man wearing a tailcoat. He looked elegant with how properly he stood and bowed upon seeing the man who brought me here.
“Mr. Ryso, do you want dinner to be prepared already?” he asked.
Wait, would I be wrong if I say that this Mr. Ryso was also a royalty like me? I mean, human beings, just like immortals, would simply bow to others only if they were inferior in terms of ranks. I looked at Mr. Ryso and he simply gave me a side glance before returning his attention to the elderly man.
“Yes. We will be at the dining hall so do not bother sending some maids in my room,” Mr. Ryso replied.
The elderly man simply nodded his head before taking his leave. Upon entering the mansion, a small gasp escaped from my mouth. This was much like a different place! Their floor was tiled with white marbles, making it look like it was almost the palace of Arsen back in the immortal realm. The only difference was that this place was plainer in terms of detailed designs. I lifted my head at the seemingly intricately carved large glass at the ceiling that emitted light.
Hearing some faint footsteps, I shifted my attention towards Mr. Ryso and saw him already disappearing upstairs. I immediately lifted my dress and hurried to the stairs painted with white and gold colors. Even though I wanted to run to his side, I could not do so because the heels I was wearing felt like they were scraping the back of my foot. It hurts!
After an agonizing climbing of the stairs, I found myself in a large hallway. On my right side were glass windows two times taller than I was. Mr. Ryso came to a stop and looked back at me. He never said a word, probably because he did not want to waste energy to speak. I got on the floor and removed my heels. Picking them up with one hand, I ran to his side as fast as I could until we were both facing a white and gold painted door.
I waited for him to open them but then, felt the stares he was giving me.
“Mr. Ryso, should I open the door now? I am really uncomfortable with you staring at me without saying-”
He cut me off when he opened the door and instructed me to close it. He removed his black coat, making me stand so close to the door so I could make a fast run if ever he plans to do something to me. I also clutched at my bag, remembering what Milan had told me to do in case of an emergency.
“Have a seat, Ms. Livine. I need to discuss something with you.”
I was a bit shocked when he just spoke out my last name when I never even told him my name. Wait, did Julian tell him? I just had the feeling that he really did tell him, most especially that he would run his mouth nonchalantly when speaking with his customers.
Following his instruction, I walked towards the chair that looked more comfortable than the chairs back in Julian’s bar and took my seat. Yeah, the cushion was indeed much better.
I turned my attention to what was in front of me. There were several papers placed on top of the glass table and even though I wanted to read what it was all about, I could not do so. The writings of human beings were totally different from ours.
I turned my head towards Mr. Ryso who was loosening his grey tie as he sat on the couch just across from me.
“Read those ones.” He motioned to the papers on top of the table. “If you want to make some changes, just say so and we will negotiate about it.”
I intertwined my hands on top of my closed knees and straightened my back. I stared at him. He would probably belittle me of what I was about to confess but there was no way out but to simply tell him the truth.
“Sir, I cannot read.”
Just then, he gave me a look of disbelief. His brows knitted and stared right into my eyes as if expecting me to say that I was simply joking. But after a moment of silence, he heaved out a sigh and leaned back on the chair.
“Then, I shall make it short for you.” He cocked his head to the side and leaned his chin on the back of his hand. “Be my wife for a few years.”
I stared at him for a few moments, waiting for him to say that he was simply joking with the sudden proposal. I mean… there was no sane man in this world who would go to a bar and ask a total stranger to become his wife for a few years. That was just absurd! Plus, with the words he just said, he also probably meant that after that few years he just mentioned, he would be divorcing me later on. No such immortal would ever do that as we consider marriage as a sacred union. But then, he stood quiet for several minutes wearing his ever serious expression. There was no sign of jest in his dark grey eyes. “In that contract, it states that I shall pay you a hundred thousand dollars every month. Is that not enough for you to say yes?” I was so sure that if only it was possible, my brows could have already met in the middle of my forehead out of confusion. All I thought that escorts do was to see this guy off here in
I was at a loss for words with what he just said. It was not because Julian had indeed probably sold me to him but the fact that he actually had the audacity to place a cheap value on me. As an immortal, no amount of human money or wealth could ever buy me. The shamelessness of this man was astonishingly annoying. He may be a man whose good looks could turn the heads of women and whose voice could make them obey whatever he said, but it was not even enough for me to be happy with. Clutching at my purse, I snatched the pepper spray and threw it right at him before running to the streets. It was a good thing that it was already night time or else I might be running on hot ground… that would be torture. Taking a quick look behind me, I saw him just standing in front of the gate so I stuck out my tongue at him. I turned my attention back on the way and simply followed where the street was leading me because, in truth, I had no idea where I w
Upon returning to the mansion, the maids that once ran after me came to greet us. Mr. Ryso instructed them to take care of me as he headed towards the stairs. But before he could go upstairs, he laid his eyes on me. “You can sleep here for the night. Choose any room you want.” Unlike before, his voice was softer this time. It was something I truly appreciated since he seemed to be concerned about me despite being a stranger to him. After saying that, the maids led me to the bathroom that was as large as the bedroom Julian gave to me to sleep in. The pair of maids who accompanied me left some towels and clothes on top of the table just outside the bathing room. When they left, I stared at the tub that was as white as the clouds. And not only that, the water was warm and flower petals were even floating. It was a good bath for an immortal like me. As I took off the dress that was close to being ruined, I was reminded
Forsterite’s POV How could a supposedly peaceful night turn into something like this? Just a few hours ago, Oliviland was as beautiful and peaceful as the starry night sky but how could all of this happen in just one night? If this was just a horrible nightmare, I wished to wake up from it… I could not help but cry helplessly while watching Oliviland-my very home-getting devoured by the merciless blazing fire that seemed to be reaching to the sky. I could not even let out a scream to vent out my anger and plea as I witnessed how the silver foxes threw the bodies of my family into the fire, treating them like pieces of wood to light up the darkness. Kneeling on both knees, I lowered my head, unable to watch the horror any longer. The cries of plea and pain of our people that filled the air just a few hours ago had gone quiet. It sent shivers down my spine as my hair stood at its ends, thinking that the silence only meant
My body still felt heavy and sore but I managed to open my eyes a little as I shifted to my side. Wait… what kind of scent was this? Taking a few sniffs of the blanket and pillow, it had some floral and pleasant scent but I could not pinpoint which flower had this kind of smell. But what really caught my attention was the scent of sandalwood. It was not only coming from the pillow and blanket but the room was filled with it. I flung my eyes open when the memory of entering the portal flashed in my mind. As far as I remember, I lost consciousness when I entered the portal. Sitting upright in a matter of seconds, I found myself on a bed with blankets and sheets of dark color. There were things around that I found unfamiliar as they never existed back in Oliviland. Plus, there was a shelf on the side filled with books but I could not read them because they were written in different writing. Looking at my left side, there was a huge transpar
I thought that the womanizer was the only one who would face the death he deserved, but I was so unfortunate to receive the uncanny smirk of the woman. I really should have left this place instead of interrupting these two in their almost lovemaking session. Pointing her gun at me, she demanded, “Get out of the car, you slut.” I did not want to reveal to these lowly humans that I was an immortal so I raised my hands just like what the womanizer did. But it was more than infuriating to let this woman say and do anything as she pleased. I must endure even though it was something I did not want to do in front of this shameless creature. Still, Lansford and I both left the car and walked towards the woman. “Kneel,” she said, her gun still pointed at us. I could actually tackle her down and shove that gun right into her mouth but there were other men surrounding us. I
When we got out of the car, a few people wearing white clothes and robes came running in our direction. They took Lansford on a bed with wheels and rushed him into this huge building that seemed to be made of pure glass. I had seen this in the magical waters but I did not know what the humans called it. “Young miss, we should disinfect your wound,” one of the ladies said. Just then, it came to me that I had a cut on my cheek after that crazy woman slapped me. Without saying anything, I followed the lead of the lady in white while one of Lansford’s men tailed me behind. It was not like I was going to run away when I was not even familiar with this place. Plus, I could not simply abandon that womanizer now that he had my bead. For the next full moon, I must cultivate the remaining power I have to regain what I had lost. “Where are they taking Lansford?” I asked the woman, my gaze following the group of people pushing
My brows knitted since his question sounded like there was some sort of hidden intention behind it but I just could not pinpoint what it was. The smirk even made me more suspicious of him. Crossing my arms across my chest, I leaned closer to him.“I am more than sure as long as the things you ask for are something attainable,” I stated. “I can clean your house no matter how big it is. I am also a good cook so I can prepare food anytime you want to. Basically, you can order me around.”“I already have someone who can do that for me. Basically-” He even reiterated that word, probably trying to tease me. “-there is nothing much you can do other than lie on my bed and please me.”I showed him a disgusted face and pretended to vomit in front of him. His once amused expression was now turned into an icy one, making me smile at him.“As I was saying, I c
I clipped a few locks of my hair behind my ear as I looked down the sands. It was just a bit embarrassing to be suddenly addressed like that when I was used to being just called Fayalite. Though, I wonder what he was here for. O mean, he was the second-in-command of Arsen so he usually stays beside him. Did he probably come here to search for him? “You seem to be enjoying yourself here in the human realm, princess,” he said as he walked in my direction. Now that he was closer, I came to notice that he really blended well among the humans. Unlike the first time I came here, I looked so different and ignorant. “Not really. I...” I paused. Would it be insensitive of me to speak about Arsen? I mean, I was the reason why his soul was sent here and his body was in a coma. “Why are you here?” He looked at me in the eyes with a sharp look and a smirk drawn on his lips. It
According to what Luis said, our reserved seats were first class so we would be able to sleep more comfortably. That was good news actually because just entering in the craft made me feel like I want to throw up or something. I did not like the feeling at all. Just, as usual, Alexander and Freya were together on the opposite side of my seat with Luis. I just pretended that I did not mind them at all because I already promised Alexander that I won't be disturbing them no matter what. After putting away our baggage, I immediately laid down on my seat and shut my eyes. Luis said that we will be flying at any minute but my stomach was already flipping on its own. "I should get to sleep before we fly. I might vomit anytime," I mumbled. I heard a giggle coming from Luis as he sat across from me. "Is it your first time to ride on an airplane?" I simply nodded in reply since it felt like if I o
I had no idea what Freya wanted to talk about but turning her down would seem like I was being petty just because Alexander favored her over me. I shut the door close and walked in her direction. Sitting across from her, I stood quiet and waited for her to initiate the conversation. I can’t believe I was actually in a situation like this… I thought it only happens in those movies made by humans but oh well, I hope this won’t turn into a disaster. “Alexander told me…” she said, “He said that you were just pretending to be sick to get his attention.” What? I cannot believe he actually told her that! I was not pretending to be sick! I wanted to yell at her and claim my innocence but I could not do it because if she asks me why I fainted twice, I had nothing to say. Even I became so weirded out with my own body, and not to mention, I just lost my sense of taste. “I know,” Freya added, her voice still calm and collected
(FAYALITE) Seeing the shocked and confused expression of Alexander made me step backward. Why did it have to be him when it could have been Arsen? He was already mad at me for several reasons and if he ever finds out about who I really was, he might throw me out to the streets. Since he seemed to be frozen where he was, I decided to grab that opportunity to run away but upon turning away from him, I heard another man’s voice. “Alexander, is it okay to bring your mistress home when you already found yourself a wife?” Hearing that question just made me hesitate to jump out of the window. Thus, I ended up hiding behind the door where I could hear their conversation. Plus, I could smell a rather strong scent of sandalwood coming from the person who had just come in. Compared to other human beings, his scent was stronger. “Lansford, what did you come here for?” I heard Alexander a
For a minute, Lansford and I were in a staring contest. There was really nothing he could do to my wound since I already washed it clean and it was not that deep to cause any kind of infection. Moreover, he was a mere human being so he had no healing abilities to close the wound. He was probably doing this to show off and make me think that he was such a gentleman. Guh, after how he acted for the past few days, a day would never come for me to even consider him as a gentleman.“One…” He started to count which only made me roll my eyes before pushing him away from me.Not saying a word, I got up and sat on the edge of the bed with my back facing him. I gathered my long hair to the side just so he could get a clear view of the scratch.“It’s not that serious of a wound so there is nothing to worry about. I could still go and meet that dealer you wanted to do business with so don’t be to
Lansford shrugged his shoulders and replied, “It is a well-known tale here.”What? Really? But how did humans even know of the Black Alpha’s existence? Did he probably announce his presence? Or was he captured when the humans came to know of his real identity? Err… just by thinking of that gives me the shivers. He might be being tortured somewhere or even died.I wanted to ask more about the tale he was referring to because it could not be the one I was talking about but every time I bring out that topic, Lansford would dismiss it and insist that I should just focus on reading and memorizing. He acted that way until we were at the airport and just like always, I was stunned at the huge machine that humans use to fly.“Hey, Lansford,” I called out as I narrowed my sight on the so-called airplane. “The wings of that plane seemed to be too hard. Are you sure that if we ride on it,
What happened the next day after Lansford found out about my true identity as a red fox, I did not really like what greeted me so early in the morning. I had a good night’s sleep indeed but upon leaving my room so I can head to the kitchen and find something I can cook, Lansford was in the living room.“Morning. What’s with the piles of papers around? Are you studying for an exam?” I asked. He did not say anything. He simply motioned me to sit beside him while holding a few documents I could not understand. Occupying the seat near him, he showed me a book with colored illustrations. If I was not mistaken, it was possibly a book for children.“Before we depart tomorrow, I will be teaching you how to read so you can survive on your own when you make future deals in my stead,” he said.I looked at him with a raised eyebrow. “Are you expecting me to learn new wri
“Shut your eyes right now, Lansford, before I will snatch them out from your eye sockets,” I threatened.“They’re closed,” he replied as he slowly put me down.Since he had already seen my true form, I let out my nine tails while maintaining my human form so I could at least use them to cover my nakedness. Taking a few steps away from him, I saw that he indeed shut them close but to make sure of it, I clenched my fist and attempted to punch him. I stopped midway when my hand was already a few millimeters away from his face. Seeing that he did not flinch even a tiny bit, I was convinced that he was keeping his word. I turned my back on him and grabbed my clothes from the ground before I tiptoed back to the room to get dressed. This was supposed to be one of the ordinary days that I should be searching for my sister but I did not know what went wrong or what I did wrong just to deserve this. I
(FORSTERITE)I gulped at the question of Lansford because it just felt like he knew where I really came from. I really could not guess if he was asking because he did not know or he was simply testing me if I was telling him the truth or not. This was one of the things that somehow made me fear him… he was just one of the people I could not predict.Clearing my throat, I replied, “What do you mean by kingdom? I am not a princess or anything so coming from a kingdom is definitely not possible. What are you even thinking?”After washing the vegetables, I turned on my heels to leave the kitchen because I did not want to continue the conversation. It was a dangerous path to take so better yet retreat before this guy would hit me in the most unexpected time. However, upon turning away from the sink, I flinched upon seeing him standing before me.He flic
