An persistent beeping disturbed my slumber. I tried to ignore the irritating noise, but it seemed to be coming from under my pillow.
“She moved!” someone shouted. “Doctor!”
“Arrrgh,” I groaned, then more voices accompanied the incessant beeping.
A bright light flashed before my closed eyes. Annoyed, I scrunched my face in displeasure.
“She’s responsive,” a voice said with authority.
I pulled myself from sleep, opening my eyes just to tell everyone to shut up. As soon as I moved, pain engulfed my head. Many strange faces surrounded me. All but one wore white doctor’s coats or nurse’s scrubs. Vera stood behind them, looking out of place in a colorful top and jeans. Her red, puffy eyes made her look older than I remembered.
“Why am I in a hospital?” I whispered.
“You were in an accident,” Vera said. “Do you remember?”
I tried to sit up. “Don’t,” the nearest doctor said. “You have a head injury that hasn’t quite healed yet. Let us assess you first.”
I put a hand to my head and felt bandages surrounding it. “What happened?” I asked.
“You were in a car accident on the highway,” Vera repeated.
“Accident?” I said in disbelief. I had no recollection of an accident.
“Her vitals are stable, so we’ll give you some time with her,” the doctor said to Vera, then ushered everyone out of the room.
Vera approached my bed. “Thank God you’re all right. It’s been two months, and I’ve been worried sick.”
“Two months?” I asked with wide eyes. I’d been in the hospital for two months!
“I tried calling Alexander right after it happened. But he didn’t answer, so I sent him a message. You know what the jerk said? That you’re not his problem,” Vera said with a scowl and blatant hatred in her voice.
“Who’s Alexander?” I asked, wondering what this guy did to annoy my friend so much. And why should I be his problem?
“What do you mean, ‘Who’s Alexander?’ Don’t you remember him?”
I shook my head. The name didn’t ring any bells.
Vera went to the door and called for the doctor with impatient insistence. Why? What was the big deal about me not remembering this guy?
The doctor came, and he and Vera spoke in hushed whispers.
Afterward, he approached my bedside. “You took a severe blow to head, Olivia. It seems you’ve suffered some memory loss. We’re going conduct a detailed neurological examination to assess brain function, okay?”
“Okay,” I said softly.
The doctor checked my reflexes, muscle strength, coordination, and sensory responses. Everything functioned well except my memory. With Vera’s help, they determined I remembered my childhood and college years, but the last few years were mostly gone. Specifically, memories of a husband I’d had—the Alexander that Vera had spoken about—were no longer with me.
“Well, it might be a good thing that you don’t remember that jerk anyway,” Vera said.
“Why?” I asked, thinking a husband was definitely something I should recall. However, Vera told me he was my ex-husband, not current husband. I was only twenty-six, and I was already divorced?
“He’s a scumbag,” Vera said. “Trust me when I say you’re far better off without him.”
I gazed at the ring finger on my left hand. A ghostly outline shone where a ring would be worn, and there was a slight indentation there as well. My mind drifted to Leo, the only man I could have imagined marrying. He was such a gentleman when we were in college together. Was it possible he used another name, or maybe his middle name was Alexander?
Vera visited me at the hospital daily until they discharged me, saying I’d made an excellent recovery, though my memory still wasn’t intact. They gave me a list of care instructions and a diet plan before we left. As Vera drove to her apartment, I stared out the window. Everything looked familiar, so I wondered why, of all the things I couldn’t remember, it was my ex-husband who’d left my mind. When we arrived at Vera’s three-bedroom apartment, it looked exactly as I remembered it. We were greeted by a caregiver named Violet. Vera explained that she’d hired Violet to help care for me for a short while, since she’d have to go to work and wanted to ensure I was all right while she was away. Vera led me to my room and helped me get settled in as Violet arranged my medications on my bedside table. “It’s late, and you should rest,” Vera said.I nodded, feeling like a little girl. I needed her, though, so I was glad she was there for me. She made me feel even more child-like when she
Alexander's POVAs I drove with no specific destination in mind, I recalled how Olivia had become a part of my life.In college, I only had eyes for Kira. I was just a year older than her back then. At twenty-four, Kira had the body of a supermodel and had already graced the covers of several popular magazines. Her perfect body and pretty face drove me mad with desire. We were both from worthy families, and it felt so right to be with her. Though she was a social media freak, I understood her. I loved her and planned to marry her once we completed college in only a couple of months. Then there was Olivia. She was always there trying to please me, but I ignored her because my heart was already taken. Kira was not the type to serve a man, but Olivia was prepared to do anything for me. Yet it was Kira I wanted. When I told Kira I wanted to introduce her to my parents as the girl I wanted to marry, she agreed with excitement. My family would have accepted her because she was from a famil
Alexander's POVOlivia was both my antidote and poison. I felt calm around her, but yet I hated her. I didn’t want the world to know I was marrying her, and I didn’t give her a girl's dream wedding. Instead, I capitalized on the disapproval of both our families—my mother took an instant dislike to Olivia once I told her I believed she sabotaged my relationship with Kira—and suggested we have a small courthouse wedding.I told her, “We’ll be together. That’s all that matters,” and she smiled. When the day of our wedding arrived, we went to the courthouse and met up with my sister, Lydia, and Olivia’s friend, Vera. But even though we’d decided on a small affair, Olivia still expected my mother to attend. When she asked why my mother wasn’t there, I lied with a smile, saying, “She had an emergency.”We spent fewer than ten minutes at the courthouse, then signed the wedding certificate. No ceremony, no heartfelt vows. Just the standard fair, with a stingy peck when prompted. Olivia’s fam
Olivia's POVI lay on the bed for a while after taking the medication Violet gave me. Eventually, I drifted off to sleep and then into a dream. In it, I was in a familiar, yet unrecognizable room. From there, I went into a hallway then down a spiral staircase. That felt familiar as well, like I had used it before, though I couldn’t recall where or when. It led to a living room, dining room, and kitchen, each of which held that same eerie familiar feeling. As I stood in the kitchen wondering whose house I was in and why it felt so familiar, yelling came from a faceless female standing at the kitchen door. “What are you doing standing there like an imbecile? Aren't you supposed to be cleaning, you lazy gold digger?” She scoffed and then continued. "You can keep trying, but my brother will never love you. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever.” Another faceless female figure appeared behind the first. “You’ll always be the piece of silly trash you are," she said. “You’re worthless and don'
Olivia's POVMy eyes widened as I stared at him. The name Alex echoed in my head. "You do forget who I am Vera. I don't need an invitation to go to a place," Alex said and I frowned. He was full of himself. He was handsome but I don't think I like his attitude right now."Well, this is private property and you are transpassing," Leo said standing up to Alex. "If you don't want me calling the police on your ass, you better get teleport yourself out of here," he added. "Alex, please leave," Vera said angrily and Alex glared at the two.I stood behind Vera watching the whole scene before me. My gaze was more on this Alex guy recalling Vera's words, that I was married to him."Fine, I am leaving," Alex said and turned to leave but unexpectedly pushed Leo so hard he lost his balance and fell to the ground."Leo," I screamed and Alex grabbed my hand."You are coming with me," he said through gritted teeth. The look in his eyes sent chills down my spine. I tried to free myself but he tight
Alexander's POV The day Olivia walked up to me with the divorce papers, I was shocked. The first question I asked myself was, has she stopped loving me? The idea of losing her sent chills down my spine and made fear grip my heart. When I was very young, I was diagnosed with a condition, bipolar disorder. My parents thought I could never have a normal life. My mum became the reason I acted normal. She knew what to say to me and how to handle me all through my life. I met Kira and she awakened something else in me. I never stopped talking about her. It was like I was healed from my condition until that day when she left. Kira leaving me took a toll on me and I blamed Olivia for it. However, Olivia, coming into my life helped me heal. Olivia loved to sing and it comforted me. She respected me and loved to serve me. These little things had a positive impact on me. However, I couldn't forgive her for making Kira dumped me and hence I couldn't show her love. My family treated her badly a
"Sir," I heard Ezra say but I angrily interrupted. "Just do as I say," I yelled at him and I heard him reply with 'yes sir'. I tossed the phone to the side and started pacing up and down my room. I was beginning to regret all my actions. I started thinking about things I could have done to keep her with me. Like locking her up. For starters, I shouldn't have sent her out of my room. I should have also not allowed her to leave the house that night. There was a knock on my door interrupting my messed up mind. Thinking it was my mum I yelled at her. "Go away, mum,," but the door was unlocked and pushed open. Because of my condition, my mum had a spare key to my room just to make sure I didn't harm myself. I thought it was my mum but when the person strode in. It was Maria. I wondered how long I had been pacing up and down my room because Maria was wearing a different dress. She took off the long black jacket she was wearing exposing what she was wearing underneath to my view. She wa
Alexander's POV I sat on the bathroom floor and was suddenly hit by a strong emotion. The thought of Olivia occupied my mind. I just couldn't get her out of my mind. "She can't leave me," I said to myself. I stayed in my room and didn't go to the office for a while. I did my office work from home. Ezra called me and told me about the party at the hotel for Olivia. My lips curled up into a smile. "Get me all the details," I said. "It's happening tonight, sir," Ezra said. "Great," I replied. "We are going for a party tonight," I said but Ezra spoke again. "Sir, I found the Leo guy," he said. "Go ahead," I urged him, a tinge of anger evident in my voice. "His name is Leo Smith, the CEO of a well-known company in New York City. He owns the Construction Company at Aventura. It is one of the branches of his company. He arrived in Florida a week ago and he has an invitation to Ms Olivia's party," Ezra informed. "So Leo from college is the one Olivia is going out with now," I said
Olivia's POVWhile in the hospital, Alexander never came to see me. It felt like old times except this time, I knew Alexander was on admission too. The day I was discharged I visited his ward and he was asleep. I never entered his ward. I watched him through the glass. He looked different now but I
Olivia's POVI opened my eyes and my mind went to the pain I felt in my hand which quickly travelled to my back and my whole body was soon consumed with pain. The pain was gone and I felt better. I knew I was in the hospital, I turned my head slightly and met the gaze of my brother Austin."What hap
Alexander's POVThree days after my mum's arrest, myself, Austin and my lawyer sat in my living room getting ready for the court hearing. My housekeeper walked in."Sir, your sister is here," she announced."I will be back," I said to them and excused myself.I followed the housekeeper to the door a
"Yes ma'am," the lady at the reception said and I pulled my bag towards the exit.Outside, I quickly got a cab and headed for the airport. After half an hour's drive, I arrived at the airport. The news about Leo was still playing on my mind."We are here ma'am," the driver said snapping back to real
Matilda's POVI was still at the motel. I had requested a room under a different name and paid cash just to make sure, my name is not in the motel's management system. I had come in with a disguise too. I changed my eye colour and my hair. I also gave myself a different look by using tape to pull th
"Leo loves Olivia. I know," I said. "So why will he do something that would make Olivia hate him?" I asked."That is an important question. We need to find an answer, if not this could be used to disregard the evidence," Austin said and I shifted my gaze to my team member who had still standing in h
Alexander's POVI opened the file and went through the information printed out in black and white while lying on my bed. I was shocked by what I found out. I never knew Lydia and Olivia shared the same father. I knew Lydia was my half-sister because we share a mother but never in my wildest dream di
Leo's POVI thought I was finally going to have Olivia to myself. With the way everything was going, I knew convincing Olivia to love me was no longer something I could do. She was just not ready to love me for whatever reason. I have done everything I could to convince her I am the man for her but
Well, we didn't have to stay in that condition for long, the police entered using the front door. Leo grabbed Olivia as a shield, trying to escape but Olivia's brother came from behind him and hit him in the head. Leo was done but a gun went off. Not sure whose but I saw the guard standing behind Ol
