Feeling Lost

Rook POV

I lean back on the couch, drink in hand, letting their conversation wash over me. I don’t check my phone, I avoid thinking about Kade, my father doesn't even enter my mine. Tonight I just exist.

The night moves on easily, the way it always does when I’m with the team. No pressure. No expectations. Just mindless conversation, food, and drinks. It’s the kind of distraction I need, the kind that keeps my thoughts from circling back to the one thing I don’t want to deal with.

But it only lasts so long.

Jake checks the time, sighing as he stretches. “We’ve got a game tomorrow. I’m calling it.”

Lucas groans but nods, setting his empty bottle down. “Yeah, I don’t need Coach breathing down my neck first thing in the morning.”

They start wrapping things up, tossing trash, grabbing their stuff. Normally, I’d be right there with them, getting ready for the next game, but not anymore. Not since I switched to part-time.

Jake glances at me. “You heading home?”

I shake my head. “Think I’ll

Rook POVThe drinks keep coming, the conversation flowing, and everything is just easy. The tension that’s been riding me all night dulls under the whiskey, sinking into something looser, something that doesn’t feel like it’s pressing against my ribs, demanding to be dealt with.Tyler’s an asshole, but he’s a funny asshole, and the more we drink, the more we lean into each other, shoving, laughing, shoulders bumping. At some point, he mutters something about how I probably skate slow as hell since I’ve only been playing part-time. I scoff, reaching out and shoving his face away with my palm, making him nearly choke on his drink. He sputters, grinning as he grabs my wrist, dragging my hand down. “Cheap shot, Rook.”“Like you wouldn’t take one,” I fire back, knocking his arm off mine.He chuckles, shaking his head as he takes another sip of his drink. “You’re lucky I like you.”I smirk, grabbing my glass. “That makes one of us.”He laughs, and before I know it, we’re leaning into each o

  • Pucking Forbidden Claim   Their Foolishness

Kade POVThe meeting room is quiet, the kind of silence that stretches too long, heavy with unspoken decisions.I sit at the far end of the table, fingers drumming against the arm of my chair, listening as they talk, discuss, dissect, decide, like Rook isn’t even in the equation anymore.Like he isn’t supposed to be here.Like his place is already gone.“He’s impulsive,” one of the older men mutters, shaking his head. “And impulsive leaders die fast.”“He’s strong,” another counters, but there’s doubt in his tone, like he’s just saying it because he knows he should. “And smart. He’s just…”“Reckless.”The word lingers, and sits in the middle of the room like an immovable weight.I say nothing and I don’t move. I just sit there, staring at the wood grain of the table, jaw tight, hands fisting in my lap as they talk about Rook like he’s already fucked this up.After hours of this, after every argument, every justification, every dismantling of why Rook isn’t good enough, they turn to me

Kade POV“He’s too unpredictable right?” I let out a sharp laugh. “Unpredictable is what keeps this family from getting wiped off the fucking map. You know why hardly no one’s dared to make a move against him? Because they don’t know what the hell he’s going to do next. And in this world, that’s power. You don’t see it because you’ve been sitting in this room too long, playing it safe.”Nikolai’s jaw tightens, but he doesn’t interrupt me.“He doesn’t know how to lead?” I continue, my voice turning colder. “Then explain why people follow him anyway. Explain why, even when he’s not trying, people stand behind him. Why they trust him. He doesn’t lead because of his name. He doesn’t lead because someone told them to follow. They do it because they believe in him.”I lean forward now, my hands pressing against the table, my voice lower but no less sharp.“You want to talk about how he doesn’t play the game? That he doesn’t ‘understand’ the politics of it all?” I shake my head. “Maybe that’

Kade POVThe second I step in, I hear soft laughter coming from the living room and I move toward it and find Harlow sitting on the floor, her dolls spread out in front of her, while Rose watches from the couch, half-focused on her book.Harlow spots me immediately and beams.“Daddy Mercer!” she cheers, scrambling to her feet and running toward me.I let out a slow breath, my body instantly relaxing as I crouch down and scoop her up. “Hey, little troublemaker,” I murmur, pressing a kiss to the side of her head. She pulls back slightly, pouting. “You took forever.”“Yeah? And what’d you do while I was gone?”“I won!” she exclaims, throwing her arms up.I raise a brow. “Won what?”She huffs, twisting in my arms to look at Rose. “Tell him.”Rose chuckles, shutting her book. “We played two games. She beat me at both.”Harlow looks back at me, all smug satisfaction.I shake my head. “And you didn’t let her win?”Rose smirks. “Absolutely not.”Harlow grins, wrapping her arms around my neck.

Rook POVMy head is pounding and I groan, rolling onto my side, the sheets tangled around my legs, my body heavy with the kind of exhaustion that only comes after drinking way too much. The room is dim, barely lit by the morning light creeping through the curtains, and my mouth tastes like stale whiskey and regret.I blink a few times, trying to clear the haze from my vision, but it takes me a second to register the unfamiliar ceiling, the scent of someone else’s laundry detergent, the fact that I have no fucking clue where I am.Then I shift slightly, and feel the warmth of someone next to me.My stomach drops. Slowly, cautiously, I turn my head and... “Fuck.”Tyler groans beside me, voice rough with sleep. “Shut the hell up, my head is killing me.”I press my hands into my face, willing the headache away, willing the entire situation away. “What the fuck happened?”Tyler stretches, cracking his neck. “Relax, Rook. We didn’t fuck.”I let out a breath, relief flooding my system, but i

Rook POVI don’t move right away, making sure he’s actually calm before I let up slightly.Tyler sighs dramatically. “This has been fun. We should do it again sometime.”Kade lunges again, and I swear to God I might have to fucking knock him out at this point.Tyler sits up slightly, rubbing his jaw where Kade clocked him, before tilting his head with that same smug smirk that makes me want to punch him myself.“You know,” he muses, “you really don’t appreciate what you have, Mercer.”Kade’s nostrils flare, his jaw clenching. “Shut the fuck up, Tyler.”Tyler grins, clearly enjoying himself. “I mean it. You act like Rook’s just yours like he couldn’t have anyone else if he wanted.” He leans back, shaking his head. “But damn, man. Last night? Kade POVThe sound of Rook pulls me from my sleep. Groaning, I try to get more comfortable.“Kade,” he whispers, and I groan.“No.” I’m sleeping. He can leave me alone.“Wake up.”Shaking my head, I keep my eyes closed. “Shh.”He chuckles quietly. “You need to wake up.”“Five more minutes,” I whisper.“As nice as it has been to have you this close for the last, like, eight hours, the plane is descending, and my body is numb.”I move slightly and realize. “Shit.” I fell asleep on him. I pull back slightly, and he’s smirking at me. “Sorry.”“It was highly amusing. One moment we were talking, then you were snoring in my ear. No warning, nothing.”I rub my face, trying to wake myself up. “I slept the whole flight?”“You did. On me.” He smirks, and I nod.“Sorry. You should have woken me and told me to move.” What sort of idiot doesn’t? I remember we got cleaned up and dressed. Then he pulled me back onto him. What the hell were we talking about? Rook POVKade’s fingers move to undo the rest of my buttons, and I lift my hips to help him slide my trousers down. His eyes never leave mine, and I can see the fire in them. I reach up and run my fingers through his hair, pulling him closer to me.His hand wraps around my cock and I shudder at the touch, my body betraying my earlier reservations. He smirks, knowing he’s won this round, and leans in to press a kiss to my neck. The sensation of his lips on my skin sends a thrill down my spine, and I can’t help but let out a low moan.Kade takes this as encouragement and continues to explore my body with his mouth. His tongue traces a path along my collarbone, and I can feel my resolve weakening with every passing second. I try to remind myself that this isn’t the right time, that we have more important things to focus on, but it’s hard to think straight when Kade is making me feel this good.He drops to his knees in front of me and I can feel his hot breath on my cock, and I know what’

He’s stuck somewhere in his own fucking head, lost in thoughts I can’t pull him out of, so I just sit here with him, my arm around him, my hand rubbing slow, steady circles on his back.I don’t rush him, I don’t tell him to get up, get over it, and move on.I just wait, because for once, he’s not trying to pretend. The car slows, the subtle shift in movement telling me we’ve arrived at the airstrip. Rook POVI don’t think I’ve ever seen Kade like this, not once. Not when he came home hurt from that fight my dad forced him into, not when things with work went to shit, not even when he was exhausted and running on nothing but adrenaline. He always had control, always held himself together, always showed only what he wanted people to see.Kade doesn’t break. He gets angry, he gets cocky, he gets jealous, but he never lets himself be sad. He’s never cried, not in the five years I’ve been married to him. Not even once. I can't remember a time before that when he has either. Now, he’s falling apart in my arms, his body shaking, his is breathing ragged, as his hands grip at my shirt like he doesn’t know how to let go.I hold him tighter, keeping him pressed against me, my fingers still buried in his hair. Kade POVI can’t stop shaking. My whole fucking body feels wrong, like my skin is too tight. I feel like I’m trapped inside something I can’t break out of and my hands keep flexing and curling into fists because I don’t know what the fuck else to do with them.Rook is still holding onto me, still looking at me like I’m worth something, and I don’t fucking understand it.“I’ve fucked up everything,” I whisper, my voice hoarse.Rook exhales, his grip on my jaw loosening slightly, his fingers brushing against my skin. “Kade—”“No,” I cut him off, shaking my head. “I have. I fucking have, Rook. You sat there and told me you thought I’d change after we got married. That you thought I’d let you in. I didn’t, instead I spent five years treating this like it wasn’t real, like if I let myself believe I had you, it would mean I’d lose you.”Rook doesn’t say anything, doesn’t interrupt, he just watches as I fall apart in front of him.“I wasn’t

It’s not his fault, I wasn’t there so he couldn’t tell me.“I’m not about to shout, I just don’t get why you let her stay.”Turning, he faces me more. “I wasn’t going to, but everyone looked at me like I was heartless. She’s dying Kade, and had I sent her away without you knowing it wouldn’t have gone down well.”I nod and look out of the window. How have I fucked up so much? When did it get to a point where if I make a move on him, it’s something calculated and meaning more is happening? When did things turn to shit? I push to figure it out and I hate it because the more I focus, the more I realise I’ve pushed Rook out for years, it began
