I sat in front of the bar and as usual, Terry, the bartender gave me a wink as he asked took the order for my drink. Since Red Diamonds was our favorite club to hang out at, both me and Allie were quite familiar with Terry who just so happened to have his shift almost every time we come here.
Terry, although his real name was something else but apparently he didn't like it since he thought it wasn't as cool as his personality (his words, not mine), was in his early 20s, studying photography and in his sophomore year. He had blonde hair with green eyes and a friendly air around him that made you want to talk to him. However, there were some instances when he tried to get a little too friendly with his cool suggestive innuendos that made me want to whack him upside his head. But apart from that, Terry was a bubble of excitement that was contagious to anyone close by.
I smiled at him and asked for a soda while he raised an eyebrow. Then slowly, his eyes turned mischievous. A grin was about to form in his face, which, I could swear, was at the expense of whatever idiocy was about to sprout from his mouth but then his gaze locked behind me. His half-grin froze midway, the corners of his mouth shut down and the mischief in his eyes turned into horror.
His transition occurred so quickly that it was almost comical. Confused at the sudden change, I looked behind me and there, I saw the reason behind Terry's transition.
Mr. I-own-this-club-and-half-the-United-States stood there with his hands in his pocket and an eyebrow raised as if daring him to say whatever he was thinking earlier. I then followed his gaze and saw Terry flush with embarrassment in front of his boss. He cleared his throat awkwardly before turning around to prepare my drink.
I turned back to Terry and felt rather than saw the devil sit beside me. I sighed and looked over to Allie and Jake who were still dancing. I then saw Allie say something to Jake and walk towards the back of the bar. She must’ve been heading towards the restroom.
"Seems like you're not as pleased to see me as I am to see you."
His deep voice near my ear made my eyes snap out of the dancefloor and focus at the speaker only to find his face right in front of mine. I was once again startled by his close proximity and tried my best to ignore it, along with the stupid something I felt on finding him in my personal space.
I leaned my right hand on the counter so as to discreetly create a little more space between us and looked at him.
"Well, I think it's a common sense that if a person books a whole club for a night for some special reason, like, for example her best friend's birthday, then it means that the said person would not be so pleased to see anyone not invited in the club, no matter who owns it, don't you think so, Mr. Stone?" I asked him sweetly.
His eyes then started twinkling with amusement making them look like sparkling water, and the corner of his mouth tilted into a knowing smirk as he said, "Of course, I wouldn't find it very pleasant. But I'd like to think that I could make an exception for you. I'd always be pleased to see you, Ms. White. We are going to be business partners after all."
If I was feeling a different kind of flush by his second sentence, his third one immediately turned it into a flush of rage. I'd never encountered such a big headed man in these 26 years of my life. It hadn't fully been a day since we last spoke and this egoistic brute automatically assumed I would accept his deal.
I was just about to make it clear to him when Terry came with my soda, which I had already forgotten about. I had a feeling he deliberately delayed my drink and the reason was currently seated right next to me with his infamous smirk. I actually felt bad for Terry because I wouldn't want to be around such an intimidating person for long either, especially when he was your boss.
I smiled at Terry and murmured a small 'thank you' to him as Mr. Stone ordered a drink for himself. Looking at my glass, he made a face and said, "Ms. White, I didn't take you for a soda type of woman. How can you even drink it? Sodas are just awful!"
I wanted to laugh at his expression when he looked at my glass like a school boy looking at a glass of milk. He actually looked adorable eyeing my drink with absolute horror and disgust. But then I thought of his ego and all thoughts of adorability went away.
I looked down at my drink. I was not a fan of soda either but I was to drive Allie and myself back later so I'd gone for non-alcoholic drink. Soda was the first thing that came to my mind. I’d just wanted to get away from the dancefloor earlier since the annoying devil was standing so close to me that my brain was about to shut up.
I looked at my drink once again. Resisting the urge to cringe and pinch my brain cells, I tried to manage my composure and narrowed my eyes at him, "What do you mean by 'soda type of woman'? Do I have vodka or tequila written in my face? For God's sake, we just met today Mr. Stone! You know nothing about me! And, more importantly, you don't know for sure that we're going to be business partners! I haven't yet made a decision seeing that our meeting was some hours ago, not days or weeks. So could you please refrain from being so certain about that until I make my decision? That is, if your ego can handle it. Oh, and I could do with some privacy at my party."
His eyes immediately hardened and jaw clenched. "We'll see about that, Ms. White. But if my presence bothers you so, I'll just leave you to it." He said and turned his back to me, grabbing the drink Terry brought him and downing it in one go. He gave me one last nod, then stood up and walked away from the bar, out of my view.
I watched his retreating back warily. I hadn't expected him to be angry at this. Maybe I bruised his ego? Well, it was about time someone did because it was so big that even a blue whale would seem tiny in comparison. I convinced myself that I was happy he finally left me alone. I looked towards the dancefloor for Allie, but saw neither her nor Jake there.
I became instantly worried since Allie was not the girl to be away at the restroom for long. I got this strange feeling that something was about to go wrong. So I hurriedly got up and tried looking for Allie and Jake, weaving through hundreds of people.
Pulling out my phone, I called Allie but it went straight through voicemail. Same for Jake. I left a quick message to both of them and continued the search. I was feeling anxious with every passing second and prayed to God that both of them were alright. Especially Allie. She was upset that Mike had forgotten her birthday and I just hoped she hadn't done anything stupid.
I was just about to reach the girl's restroom when I saw Allie come out of one of the stalls with red puffy eyes and smudged makeup. She noticed me and quickly ran towards me. I panicked when she started to cry in my arms. I had never seen Allie this way- breaking down, especially in public.
"Allie, what's wrong? What happened? Please talk to me, Allie." I begged her but she didn't stop crying. I was about to ask again when Jake came out behind her with an angry expression. His eyes were wild and I noticed his knuckles were bruised. There was also a bruise starting to form in his jaw. What on earth had happened here?
Then things became clear to me as the third person came out with a bleeding nose and bluish eye followed by a disheveled brunette. I became livid on seeing the last person I'd expected to be here and all the missing pieces fit together in a perfect picture.
"You bloody son of a bitch! How dare you?!" I immediately let go of Allie and marched towards him, landing a solid punch to his left cheek. My hand hurt like hell at the contact but I refused to let it show. I was about deliver one more to the vile creature when two strong arms held me back.
"Let it go, Eves. He's already got it. He's not even worth it.” I ignored the voice and struggled against the arms holding me back but the arms were quite persistent in their effort in restraining me. “Eves, you need to think about your reputation and Allie's. It'll only get worse if things go out of control. I'll handle it. Allie needs you right now, okay?" Jake said softly although there was a dangerous undertone to his voice, no doubt directed to his brother.
His voice and arms pulled me away from ripping out Mike's body parts. I let go reluctantly, but not without kicking him where sun doesn't shine. Feeling satisfied with Mike's painful grunt, I turned to Allie and found her crying at the scene before us with her hands on her mouth. I quickly hugged her and tried to comfort her, all the while cursing Mike to the pits of hell.
Just then, there was a thud and all of us turned around to see the cheating scumbag passed out on the floor. Jake came to us and put his arms around Allie, softly rubbing her hands and saying soothing words in ear. He then turned to me and said, "Eves, you take her to your car and I'll meet you there after I quickly handle my douche of a brother. I'll see you both soon, okay?" I nodded and slowly led Allie towards the exit.
We were nearing the bar and thankfully everyone was enjoying themselves and no one had wondered about the host. Well, no one except one.
As soon we reached the bar, Adrian Stone came rushing towards us. His eyes showed relief but then he frowned as he saw Allie almost in the verge of passing out in my arms. Was he searching for me? I shook my head at the ridiculous thought and looked up to find him staring intently at me.
"Are you okay?" He asked softly. I gave him a small smile and nodded my head slowly. He looked at Allie once again and asked, "What about her? Is she drunk or something?" I wanted to remind him that it was none of his business but then thought against it since he was only being nice and I was feeling a little guilty from earlier.
"Yeah, something like that. We're about to leave actually. I'll just inform the manager and then we'll leave." I awkwardly searched for my phone but hissed in pain when I moved my right hand. Who knew punching someone could hurt like karma.
"What happened to your hand? Are you alright, Evelyn?" I looked up at Adrian Stone's concerned gaze. It was the first time he'd said my name and that gave goosebumps in my arms. I just nodded my head again and heard him sigh. "I'll inform the manager, don't worry about it. And I'll drop you both off."
Just then Jake came back and saw us just standing there. "Why are you guys still here?" He looked at Adrian who had suddenly gone tense and then at me confusingly.
I cleared my throat and looked at Jake. "Mr. Stone, this is our friend, Jake. Jake, this is Mr. Adrian Stone, CEO of The Stones Inc., and the club's owner. He offered to give us a lift back home and I was just saying it was of no need."
Jake looked at me as if I was about to commit a crime. "Why would you do that, Eves? Allie is passed out and although I'm sober by the events, I don't think I can drive at my state."
I had just opened my mouth when he held out his hand and exclaimed, "Don't even think that you can drive, Eves. That punch you delivered him sure was badass, but your hand is gonna hurt like a bitch, trust me."
Looking at Adrian, he talked to him as if I wasn't present there. "Mr. Stone, don't mind her. She has the tendency to be out of her wits at times. But I beg you, can you please drop us? You can just drop these two. I can find a cab but it wouldn't be safe for the women, when one of them is nearly passed out."
Mr. Stone became somewhat relaxed and even amused at his words. He nodded to Jake. "There's no need. I'll drop you all. Let's go." Jake then carried Allie up and I followed them to the car. Jake sat at the backseat with the now sleeping Allie while I was left to the passenger seat beside him.
The whole ride was silent apart from the occasional small talks between Jake and Adrian where Jake filled him in with my 'oh so heroic' action while the devil sat there with his amusement growing accordingly. As we reached Allie's home, I decided to stay with Allie tonight and Jake carried her upstairs leaving me alone with the arrogant devil.
I turned to him and found him already looking at me with an unreadable expression. "Thank you, Mr. Stone. And I'm sorry if I offended you earlier." I apologized honestly.
He gave me a small smile and said, "It's not a problem, Ms. White. I'm glad I could be of help. And you don't need to apologize. After hearing your recent events, I'm just grateful that all my body parts are intact."
I found myself blushing at his teasing and he added, "You'd better put something to your hand or else it'll get worse. Take care, Ms. White. I'll see you on Monday. I hope we'll be seeing each other more often." I smiled and nodded as I got out of the car. After thanking him again and wishing him a goodnight, I walked inside. Soon I heard him restart the engine and drive off.
As I reached Allie's bedroom, I saw that Jake had already tucked her in. He looked at me sheepishly. "Um... she's fast asleep so I didn't want to wake her. I have removed her shoes so she'll feel more comfortable. I'll… uh… I'll just go now. I've called the cab and it's just around the corner. You guys take care and you put the ointment on your hand."
Jake looked embarrassed by everything and I had a suspicion that he might have something for Allie. I wanted to interrogate him but now was not the time. It had already been a stressful night. So I just nodded and offered to do something to his own wounds. He declined it saying he'd handle it and with a quick kiss to my forehead, he went away.
Sighing, I changed myself into Allie's clothes. I then took out a simple oversized t-shirt from her closet and changed her as well. After rummaging through her bathroom cabinet, I found an ointment. I applied it on my hand, hissing softly in pain. Finally, I cleaned my makeup and got into bed with her, trying not to think about a certain someone with captivating blue eyes.
I sat on my desk, rubbing my head as I thought once again if accepting the deal with The Stones Inc.would be a good idea. It was Monday today and I'd spent the majority of last night going through every detail of the contract, afraid that one little mistake from me and the company I built through my hardships will be down to ashes.I stayed with Allie for the weekend as she was upset about her now ex-boyfriend. We didn't do much, just hung around watching movies and Allie pretending that she was alright even though it was clear that she wasn't. I'd never seen Allie this upset before and it just ignited that rage in me towards that good-for-nothing scum.Jake came over on Sunday to check up on Allie and apologize about his "parents-sharer" as he described Mike although Allie repeatedly assured him there was no need. Other than that, my weekend was as normal as it could be with a best friend in her recent breakup phase, an out-of-touch until-last
A few weeks passed by and work resumed as normal with some exceptions of the works related to the production and marketing department. There were some changes now that it was associated withThe Stones Inc., but other than that, it was pretty much the same.I'd seen Adrian somedays here and there but we hadn't talked much except share a few greetings since we were both busy with our works. And besides, I was downright furious at him for outwardly denying my idea of organizing the event byEva's. The man wasn't even ready for joint contribution for the event."The event will have to be up to the standard ofThe Stones Inc.So I'm not taking any chances with my reputation." He had rudely stated his reasoning. I wanted nothing more than to remove the huge hollow thing covering his head and discover his pea sized brain so that I could pluck it out and crush it with my foot.Good Gods! I'm violent. The part
"May I have your attention?"Nate and I looked up to see Adrian standing on a dice now placed at the center of the hall. He had his right arm on the dice as he spoke with a charming smile flashed at the audience, "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! It's my extreme pleasure to announce thatThe Stones Inc.has partnered withEva's and Co. regarding our production and marketing department.”There was a series of claps and cheers that followed his announcement. He waited for the audience to go silent before continuing, “I'd like to thank the CEO ofEva's and Co., Ms. Evelyn White for the opportunity. I am certain that together, we can create a big impact in the business world. Now I'd like to request Ms. White to come up here and share her thoughts. Thank you. Hope you enjoy your evening." He ended with another one of his rare smiles and a huge applause sounded around the entire hall as people looked at my direct
Adrian's POV:8:00 am. The elevator opened to my office and I was greeted by my personal assistant, Ms. Natalie Carter. At least that's what I think was her name because I never called anyone by their first names unless they were family or very close friends.Well, there was an exceptionbut it was not for my P.A. It was for someone else. I noticed her flirtatious smile and her choice of wardrobe which said one thing- I wassupposedto notice that. I hid my irritation and with a curt nod, walked into my office.Ms. Carter had been providing these subtle hints for some time now and recently it was starting to be more blatant. I was considering firing her because I hated it when my employees forgot their place and the rules and regulations of my company. And most of my previous assistants were fired for the same reason. Ms. Carter was excellent in her job though which was why I was hoping it wouldn't come to that. I
Back to EvelynI finally ended the call and sat down on my chair with a small sigh. It was almost 3 PM now and I hadn't eaten anything apart from a cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin Leah had brought when she arrived earlier. That was around six hours ago.I had a meeting with my team regarding the changes with advertising strategies and additional resources required for the company. The meeting was tiresome to say the least. When it finally ended, I had a video conference scheduled with an investor from Italy. He was not fluent in English at all and his thick accent made it difficult to catch a word he said. Fortunately, I'd learnt Italian and had been to Italy several times so we were finally able to come up to a common ground although my Italian was barely passable. And now I was just a second away from chewing my nails out while I waited for Leah to bring me the papers that required my signature. She was supposed to bring them ten minutes
Lunch with Adrian turned out be...nice, surprisingly. We talked about basic things about each other and he told me about Maggs, who turned out to be his aunt. He told me that she lived somewhere near the restaurant with her husband. She was his mother's elder sister and had a son who was a couple years older than Adrian. Adrian had a fond smile on his face as he talked about Maggs and it was clear to see that Maggs had the equal amount of love for him, if not more."Sometimes I can't decide whether to call her my aunt or my friend or even an annoying younger sister." Adrian shared with a hint of smile. It was a rare sight, Adrian smiling genuinely, not just a smirk or a mere amused expression, but a real genuine smile. It almost made me want to keep looking at him all day. But I did not. Because it would seem weird. And Evelyn White was not weird. We finished our lunch with light conversations here and there with him talking the most of course, and me co
It had been a week now since my little outburst with Adrian and I'd been going out of my way to avoid any encounter with him. It hadn't been really difficult so far because he'd only been inEva'sthree times since then.He did try to talk to me a couple of times butcoincidentallyI was quite busy on all of the occasions and hence had to cut the meeting short. But other than that, he hadn't made any comment about my behavior if he'd noticed anything, although I'd caught him staring at me with a weird look on his face. It was as if he knew me more than he let on, which was quite unnerving at times. To be honest, I was quite ashamed of my outburst. I didn’t know what had come over me that evening but the moment I heard him call me by the name which was only reserved for one specific person in my life, it was like coming out from a long duration amnesia. Memories I'd suppressed for so long came back and hit me with fresh waves
"Ms. White, I think you should take a look at this." Leah entered my office with a newspaper in one hand and her iPad in the other.I eyed a photo of mine in the newspaper. It must have been another news or rather, another rumor about the ice cold CEO. I briefly wondered what it was this time around. Other times, it was either my mysterious lover or my secret child. Once, there was a news about how I'd chosen fashion industry because my ex-boyfriend dumped me due to my bad sense of dressing. And they'd published a photo of myex neighborwho worked at a thrift shop. That guy called and thanked me a thousand times because apparently it was his dream to have his photo published in newspapers someday."What is it this time, Leah? You know I don't care about this. As you can see, I'm busy right now. So please keep those things to yourself, and keep the reporters away." I said, not bothering to see the news. They were always sprouting nonsense and I
"I want to thank everyone present here for making this day successful. And I also thank everyone who made this possible. We wouldn't been here today if not for your aids in building this brand new branch ofEva'shere in Paris. I am honored to have such dedicated and smart people working with me to establish this brand here and I am very thankful for everyone. I want to announce with immense pride that all of these stunning designs from our summer collection were made by my extremely talented sister, Ms. Evangeline White." There were a series of claps as Eva shyly waved from where she was sitting.I continued. "There's another person I want to thank from the bottom of my heart for making this possible. My husband, Adrian Stone. You've been there with me throughout every step of the way, and more often than not, you've been there as the receiving end of my anger
Whoever said handling a baby was difficult, hadn't made the adult version of the baby named Adrian Isaac Stone."He better drink this or I'm going to kill him with my bare hands." I mumbled to myself as I opened the door to the hospital room Adrian was staying on. He was sitting up on the bed while his brother Aaron sat beside him. It had been three days since he'd woken up and the man had been complaining continually about having to drink soup every day. Granted, it wasn't not an ideal thing anyone would want to live on but still, there was no need to be so fussy. That wasn't even half of it. He had been throwing tantrums about everything. The bed was creaky for him- which it wasn't because I'd been sleeping in the same bed, the colors of the walls weren't to his liking, the hospital TV was dull, his phone wasn't beeping muc

"Remember me, Evelyn White?"I looked shell shocked at the person standing in front of me. Never in millions of years would I have imagined he would be behind it all. My mouth opened and closed a several times but no words came out. My brain was still trying to process everything."What? The famous, the smart Evelyn White has no words now? 'Cat got your tongue?' would have been a phrase I'd use but you are too smart for that cliché, aren't you? So, surprised to see me?"I finally managed to get my voice back."Mike?"He smirked in response before bowing dramatically. "The one and only.""I
Adrian's POV"F*ck! What do you mean he's dead? Are you sure?" Nate asked, looking alarmed.I read the text once again before nodding. "Yeah, this person is authentic. It seems that the bastard died of sudden cardiac arrest. As if he even had a heart to begin with." I scoffed."He got off easy despite his evil doings. But what does it mean now? If the sick murderer is dead, who is behind this then? Who is trying to frame Eves?" Nate asked the question that was burning in my mind."F*ck!"I threw the phone away once again in frustration, stepping on it until the screen broke to several pieces. I had no answer to his question. Just when I thought I had figured it all out, I foun
Adrian's POV"Don'tshow me yourfaceever again.""Was I so much of a horrible person back then that you hate me to the point of hurting me in the worst possible way one could ever hurt me?""I'll never forgive you for that. Never.""It saved me from the additional heartache I would've had if I really loved you.""I wish I had died that day with my parents.""I regret the very day you came into my life."I slammed the gla
"So he is the reason for your nightmares, isn't he? He hurt you to the point that you can't even sleep well?" Eva demanded to know as soon as she caught up to me.I shook my head. "No, Eva. We just had a small disagreement. It's nothing."She scoffed. "It's notnothing,Evie. You can't lie well enough for me to not see through it. He hurt you, I can see that clearly. You might be my elder sister, but I won't let anyone get away easily after hurting you. You wait here, I'll go give him a piece of my mind.""No, Eva, wait!" I called out but she had already marched off towards the exit. I sighed at her retreating form. Just then, I heard another demanding voice."What just happened? Why did you just
"Due to lack of strong evidences claiming otherwise, it is clear that Ms. Evelyn White has willingly signed the contract stating the ownership of her company to Mr. Adrian Stone. I hereby declare that the legal rights ofEva's and Co.goes to Mr. Adrian Stone. The winning party may now begin their processing. A warning is also issued for Ms. Evelyn White to refrain from wasting the time of the court by making false claims. The court is adjourned."The judge stood up and left, effectively cutting off the only straw of hope I was hanging on.The company now belonged to Adrian. I had lost. Everything I had worked for was now gone.It was silent in the courtroom, since only the four of us were present- him and Nate, me and my lawyer. Somehow the media wasn't aware of the happenings in my office. T
It turned out, third time isn't always a charm, after all. Adrian didn't call me back. I didn't know if he even got my voicemail. Nevertheless, I didn't stop hoping, didn't stop waiting. I waited for his call the whole night, for the call that never came even after the dark night faded away with first rays of sun.Adrian's silence hurt me more than the incident last night. I felt pathetic depending on a man to comfort me. It wasn't like I needed him to save me last night. I managed to do that on my own. All I needed was someone to talk to, someone to hold me together when I was breaking down. His lack of response only meant that he wasn't going to be that anchor to my sinking ship. The message was loud and clear. So why couldn't I get it inside my thick heart? It was nearing 8 am in the morning. I wanted to return back home, away from t
