Emma sat at her desk with Veronica seated across from her. “I want to know as soon as Beta Quincy makes it back here. I also need to see our visitor when she wakes up. Quincy had never left a meeting so quickly in his life. He knew Emma wouldn't be happy with the news he would be bringing back, but he was more concerned about what he had left back at home. He drove as fast as he could and didn't relax until he hit the pack border. He threw the car into park and left his bag in the back seat. The next few weeks flew by in a blur. Emma was busy getting things ready for the baby and managing the pack. She decided to push the Luna conference off until after the baby was born. She found she was running out of energy quicker and quicker as her due date approached. Every day went the same for her, and she enjoyed the routine of it. First thing in the morning she met with Quincy and then she went to the hospital to spend time with Daryl. Then she went on about her day, dealing with pack matters. She was assigning more duties to Quincy, and she wondered if she was putting too much on him. He spent a lot of time with his newfound sister, helping her adjust to the pack. Emma let go of the wall and swallowed hard, she did as he instructed. She slipped off her pants and underwear and he handed her the robe as he kept his eyes averted. Emma put the robe on and used a towel to wipe down her legs. “In the closet, I have a bag of things. There are waterproof mats to put on the bed for delivery. I have complete faith in you.” Quincy looked from her to Dr. Adams. “No. No way. I have no idea what to do with babies, especially ones this little. I don’t know what she needs. What if she needs help with girl stuff? I can’t do that.” He was in a rambling panic at this point. Dr. Adams tsked, shaking his head. “You know, this happens every time. You would think that since she’s not your mate, you would be calmer. She will be able to handle most of it on her own. If she needs help, just do it. I’m sure you’ve seen a woman naked a time or two. “What are you doing out of bed,” he whispered with authority. Emma quirked a brow at him. “I had to take care of some things. Why are you barking at me?” He sat up and watched her cautiously as she got back in bed. “You could fall or something. The next couple of weeks went by in a hurry. Quincy divided his time between taking care of pack matters and helping Emma with the baby. He stayed in the room down the hall and checked in with the security team frequently when he needed to be away from the pack house. Today he was scheduled for a conference call with several local Alphas and to say he was angry was going lightly. "Listen, Alpha Daryl isn't dead and Luna Emma has been handling things just fine on her own. It's archaic and insulting that you think she should be challenged. I know our nature requires an alpha, but we are intelligent enough to realize that she is capable. Days passed quickly and soon it had been weeks since Emma and Quincy had spoken other than brief conversations about the pack. Although it made Emma sad to lose her closest friend in the pack, she didn’t regret her choice. She didn’t need a chosen mate and she didn’t want one that couldn’t understand her point of view or understand why it was time for traditions to change. She was exhausted from working long hours and trying to spend as much time as possible with Caleb and visiting Daryl, but now no one could say she wasn’t capable of taking care of the pack. Once the interview was done, Emma felt for confused than ever. Alice had answered every question they asked and she seemed to be telling the truth about everything except how she escaped. For days now Emma had been replaying it in her head, and she couldn’t comprehend why. Today she decided to have Alice over to discuss it. He’s worried about Alice and my mother is hovering. I’ve had a lot on my mind and I feel like I’m getting tunnel vision. I’m wondering, did you ever, or do you have any concerns about how Alice got to us? I feel like the more we learn about this situation the more complex it is. Maybe there is more to it, and we’re missing it. I think that our focus has been on helping Alice with adjusting when we should be looking more into the entirety of the situation she came from.
