Josh stretched and swung his legs over the side of the bed. "What the hell was I thinking?" he asked himself. In an effort to save some cash, he'd booked a long trip that included leaving early and multiple layovers. All that resulted in a flight that landed in New York late the night before, and with the early morning he'd had, he was dragging ass.

He had thought for a millisecond about hitting the gym, but could barely get his brain working enough to sit up. Running wasn't going to happen. A shower. That was all he was going to do before his brother arrived.

Josh had just finished getting dressed when he heard a knock on his door. He opened it up and smiled at his brother standing there with his trademark smirk on his face.

"You look like shit," Jax said in lieu of a greeting.

"Good to see you too."

Jackson moved in to hug Josh, and after a quick one, Josh let him in the room. He hadn't seen Jackson for a year, and it seemed like something was totally different every time. The first

Josh had acted on an impulse when he landed back in Wichita and called Hailey to see when Payton was coming in. While he was in New York, he'd thought about their relationship, or lack thereof. He had even confided in his brother, which he hadn't done in a long time. He knew that he wouldn't be able to mend the relationship with Jackson overnight, but they had both taken steps to put the past behind them. For the first time in a long time, he felt like he had his old brother back. The conclusion he'd come to was that maybe having to work to be with someone wasn't such a bad thing, if they were worth it; he was pretty sure that Payton was worth any work he had to put into their relationship. Jackson had a good laugh at his expense when he found out how hard he was having to work after Josh put his mind at ease that she was nothing like Ella.Josh had been watching crowds of people leave the terminal for a couple hours, but this was it, this should be her flight. He had already second an

"Earth to Josh!" Wes said as he threw a towel at Josh's head after they'd finished with soccer practice."What the fuck man?"Wes nudged Geoff, "See what I mean, Geoff? All spaced out." To Josh he said, "We just wanna know why all of a sudden you're off in la-la-land with rainbows and unicorns coming outta your ass.""Noneya. Go meddle in someone else's life.""Hey, you don't have to go all batshit crazy. I'll take puppy and kitty's Josh any day."Josh had been in an exceptionally good mood ever since he'd returned from New York. Soccer was going well, he was enjoying working with the basketball team, classes seemed to be easier, and even though his roommates were annoying at times, they were all having a blast. He and Payton had been spending more time together, and he felt like they were finally getting somewhere. She was opening up, and he was finally starting to understand where she was coming from. The night before during their walk, they'd really had a heart to heart talk. He tho

Josh was confused as to why Payton didn't want her grandpa around. If he'd been injured, or was in the hospital, there was no doubt that his parents would be there with him."Shh, calm down. Everything's gonna be fine," he said, trying to soothe her.She tried to speak several times but couldn't seem to form the words. Eventually her breathing slowed, her eyes shut, and she was asleep again. Whatever had been going into her IV was knocking her out. He hated that she was so out of it, but glad that she looked better. He had really been worried about her the night before. He tried to help out as much as he could by giving them information about her past medical conditions, and the head injury she'd told him about, but he didn't know much. They weren't giving him much information either since he wasn't her next of kin. Since he got to stay with her, he didn't push it.A knock sounded and jerked Josh out of the nap he'd almost gotten to. The nurses had been coming by every couple of hours,

Taking a seat on the side of the bed, Josh grabbed Payton's hand, and squeezed it gently. "You never really answered, how are you?"Payton laced her fingers through his and sighed, "Better I guess. I hurt, but it's a different kind of hurt now.""What can I do to help?"She shook her head, "Nothing. I feel bad you missed your classes.""It wasn't a big deal," he told her, and then bent to press a kiss to her lips. Seeing her there in the big bed, looking so fragile, made his heart ache. He knew he had feelings for her, but when he saw her in so much pain, he realized just how much he cared about her. There wasn't anything he wouldn't do to take that away from her and make it so she would feel better.Suddenly a loud grumble broke the silence in the room. Payton blushed, "Sorry. I wasn't hungry earlier when they brought dinner.""You want me to go get you something?"She shook her head and then looked away. He had only known her for a short time, but he could always tell when she wasn't

"Okay, you can stop looking at my boobs anytime now," Payton scolded Josh playfully."But they're such nice boobs.""Okay, keep gawking. It'll give you an excuse when I beat you."Josh had recently discovered that Payton liked to swim. She didn't just swim for fun, but she swam laps for exercise. It just happened to come up in a conversation when he and his roommates were talking about sports. Wes had blurted out that no one did anything in the water, and Payton spoke up. After that, things got competitive."So sorry if I don't believe you, but I just don't see how you'd be able to beat me at anything sports related," Josh had said."Because I'm a girl?""Not just that. I work out a whole lot more than you do."Payton stuck a hand on her hip, "Oh, just get over yourself already. I know I can beat you down the pool and back. You think that just because you're majoring in 'sports' that it makes you better than me. Well, it doesn't."Josh loved the playful banter, "Well, it's not just th

Everything came to Josh at once, and suddenly he was very awake. The sunlight hitting him right in the eyes, and the fact that he was hungry probably were to blame for the abrupt wake up, but realizing he was alone was what had him sitting up and looking around. It was crazy that there wasn't even a sign she'd been there the night before; all her stuff was gone. He wondered if he'd pushed her a little too far the night before, and now it looked like he needed to track her down.Sighing, he rolled out of bed and found a pair of athletic shorts in his dresser, and when he opened the door, he started the trek down the stairs. One way or another, he'd find her, and figure it all out. When he rounded the corner at the bottom of the stairs, he saw her at the stove, and it sounded like she was holding her own with the guys. She hadn't left after all."I can't believe you beat him!" Wes exclaimed loudly."Why is that so hard to believe? Boys and their macho egos.""Ego, huh? At least I've got

Josh had played the morning over in his head a million times, and each time he cringed when he got to the point where he didn't stand up for Payton. He wished he had said something to the guys right then. Better yet, he wished the guys had kept their mouths shut. Sometimes the guys just didn't think, and sure, he was guilty of that too, but he hoped it had never caused the kind of problems it had this morning. The guys knew they'd messed up and tried to apologize to him, but he let them know that he wasn't the one that they needed to be apologizing to.After she left, he'd gone back to his place and called to see if he could talk to her. He hated that she felt she couldn't measure up to Ella. He hoped he'd never given her any reason to feel that way, and he'd work hard to prove to her that she never did again. Hailey had just about let him have it on the phone that morning."She's in the shower Josh," she told him.Letting out a sigh, he said, "Yeah, just like she's washing her hair t

"Have a good break," Payton's professor told her as she turned in her last test of the day. She'd had more tests and papers due this past week, and part of her was glad that her grandpa had talked her out of going home because she'd have never gotten caught up.Her class right after lunch was her last for the day, and she was ready and waiting when Hailey walked through the door just after two."Hey, girl! You all packed?" Hailey asked as she threw her backpack on the floor."Yeah, just got finished.""What time is Josh picking you up?"Payton looked at the clock, "In about forty-five minutes.""Want to go get some coffee or something?""Sure, I've got some money left on my meal card, I might as well."The girls headed up to the student lounge and grabbed a coffee before taking a seat on the sofa. Payton blew on the brew hoping to cool it before she took a hesitant sip."You ready for the weekend?" Hailey asked."As ready as I'll ever be. I haven't met anyone's parents before. I'm kind

NINE MONTHS LATERWes looked up at Hailey in awe. She had overcome her fears and had rocked the shit out of her time on the stand. When she had decided to stay in DC, it was to support her friend who was pressing charges against the two guys sitting not far from Wes, guys he'd like to take outside and punch a few times. They both thought the process would be over somewhat soon, but the whole thing seemed to take time, a lot of time.During that time, they'd grown closer. They'd spent many nights talking on FaceTime and the phone. They'd only been able to see each other in person one other time, and that was in April. Wes had flown to DC to see Hailey again. He'd brought Cali with him that time, and he'd spent a week with her. While he was with her, she took him to see some of the sites. They were down at the National Mall, and as they walked by the Tidal Basin with the trees full of Cherry Blossoms, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. They'd gone home, and sh

"You did what?"This conversation wasn't going like she planned. She had envisioned telling Wes she'd turned down the amazing opportunity, and he'd say how much he loved her and appreciated that, and they'd ride off into the sunset together. Instead, it sounded like he was... mad? How was that possible?"I thought you'd be happy.""You gave up a great opportunity on a whim? Yeah, that's something to be excited about.""I don't get you, Wes!" She yelled into the phone. "First, I don't move in with you after college, and you break up with me. Now I give up my job, and you're mad. What's a girl supposed to do?""That's just it. You didn't even bother to ask. You just made the decision on your own. It's the same as last time.""But... but I gave everything up for you."Hailey heard Wes sigh over the phone, "I don't want you to give it all up. I want us to be a team. Isn't that what you want?""I just thought that I was doing this for us.""Maybe if we'd have talked about it, we

Wes waited around like a kid waiting for his crush to call. He wanted to pick up his phone the second he knew Hailey got off work, but he didn't want to overwhelm her. So, he'd held off and was waiting for her to call. Only he was losing it because it had been hours since she should have gotten off work, but he hadn't heard anything at all, not even a text. When it came time for him to crawl in bed, he took Cali out, looked at his phone one more time, and finally gave up on the idea that he'd be hearing from Hailey. He hated that he still felt like she didn't include him in her life, but that would come, he hoped.Just as he was about to fall asleep, his phone rang. Grabbing it from his nightstand, he looked at the screen and was surprised to see Hailey's name there. She was a total night owl, but with her having an hour on him, he figured she'd have been in bed a long time ago."Hey," he answered."You're mad." It wasn't a question."Not mad. I'm more hurt."He heard Hailey le

Wes: You're ignoring me. Stop it.Hailey looked at the text the next morning and realized that she needed to call Wes. Picking up her phone, she dialed his number. It didn't even ring twice before he picked up."Glad you decided to call. I was giving it until tomorrow, and then I was looking at plane tickets.""Wes, get serious. And here I was worried I'd be waking you up.""Oh, I've been up for a while. I haven't been able to sleep right since I got back. And I am serious. Cici has been all over my ass since I came back to work. She said the only people who can stand me are the animals. Most of them can't stand being around me either. Thankfully Cali doesn't seem to mind my mood.""She must be a good dog." "She is.""You didn't tell me much about her. When did you get a dog?" she asked."A few months ago. I went to Kentucky for Sexy Kenny's bachelor trip. We went away hoping to be doing nothing but drinking and relaxing in the woods and ended up rescuing a mom and her p

  • Portwood Brothers   Chapter 160: Bring On The Pain

There's no two ways about it, Wes was miserable. He missed Hailey, it was colder than crap out, and things just seemed to be going downhill since he got home. On the way home, Wes' flight had been delayed overnight due to weather, so he'd got stuck in Chicago. When he got home, he found out that not only had his pilot light gone out on his furnace, but his pipes had frozen too because it'd been so cold. Thankfully they hadn't burst. Because of all that, he'd been staying at a hotel. His landlord told him that with the weather warming up next week, it should fix the issue, but there was no guarantee. The icing on the whole craptastic cake, Hailey had been distant, and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about it. Even Cali had been standoffish sensing his foul mood.A knock at his office door had him barking out a, "What?""Geeze boss, I thought you'd have come home in a better mood," Cici said as she wondered in. "One of us was alone with a member of the opposite sex, and th

Christmas music filled the space, and Wes wondered what time it was. Ever since he'd got to DC, she'd been up early, most of the time beating him up. It looked like she beat him up again. Throwing his legs over the side of the bed, he found his sweats and slid them on before heading out to see what she was up to. He hoped she wasn't going to any trouble. A flurry of activity was going on in the kitchen, and Hailey was moving around in a whirl. Pulling out a pan from the oven, she set it on the counter, and then looked up and spotted him."Hi," she said with a small smile."Hey.""I made breakfast."Smelling the rich aroma made his stomach growl, "It smells amazing.""It's just omelet muffins. It should hold us over until I can get lunch made.""I'll help with lunch," he told her as he reached over and grabbed one of the muffins burning himself in the process."You don't have to.""I want to."The pair ate breakfast together but didn't really talk about what had happened or what

The pounding on the door started again, and Hailey curled up tighter. She just wanted it all to go away."Hailey, you in there?""Wes?" she asked knowing he couldn't hear her.Slowly she stood, trying to get her bearings. Her legs didn't want to work, and she was worried they might give out on her. When the loud knocking started again, it scared her so bad she jumped and held her chest hoping it would slow her heart. Checking the peephole just to make sure, she confirmed that Wes was there, hopefully alone, and opened the door."What's going on?" he asked looking angry at first and then when he took her in, his face softened. "What happened?"Reaching around Wes, Hailey looked out the door just to make sure no one was there, and then closed the door and locked it again. It wasn't until she'd done this that she could breathe again. When Wes' hand landed on her shoulder, she yelped and jumped."What the hell happened while I was gone, Hailey?""It... it was nothing.""Bullshit. Y

"Is that bacon?" Wes asked half asleep as he made his way into the kitchen the next morning."There's something else that smells like heaven in a pan?"Snatching a piece from a plate sitting on the counter, Wes took a bite and groaned. "If I didn't love you before, I'd totally love you now."A small noise escaped her and Wes wondered if he'd pushed it a bit too far. He'd already told her he loved her, and when she hadn't said the same, he wondered if she just needed more time. He didn't doubt that she did love him. She wouldn't let him touch her much less bring her pleasure if she didn't. He just knew she wasn't ready to jump off that bridge yet. "How'd you sleep?" she asked as she worked over the stove."Would have been better if I were sleeping next to you, but not too bad. You?""Like the dead... well after," she didn't have to finish for Wes to know what she meant. "I've had nightmares almost every night since that happened. I feel like I actually got some good sleep in."

"Get off me!" Hailey yelled even though it didn't matter. No matter how what she did, she couldn't stop the man from getting what he wanted."You can fight all you want, princess. We both know deep down you want it.""NO!""Hailey.""I said get off me." She kicked her legs and felt a sense of satisfaction when her hand connected with his face."Shit! Damn, I'm bleeding. Wake up, Hailey. Don't make me bleed on your bed."That didn't sound right. Why would Michael care about that? It was then that she realized she wasn't being held down at all, and the voice; it wasn't the one from her nightmare. The realization woke her like a bucket of ice water being thrown on her. "Wes?" Opening her eyes, she saw him sitting on the edge of her bed covering his nose. "Oh crap! I'm so sorry. I'll go get something for it. How bad?"Still holding a hand over his nose, she saw him try to smile, "It's just a flesh wound. I'll go take care of this if you're okay.""I'm awake." She wouldn't
