"You're fired!"
She felt her heart sink deeper into her ribcage. She felt her hearing capacity reduce, so much so that all she could hear were distant echoes of the words that had been uttered to her. She felt her mouth go dry.
She lifted her hazel brown eyes to meet her boss. He looked angry. She had deduced that from the way his brows knitted together, causing the fair skin around the area to wrinkle as well. From the way his breathing had become harsher and from the way he looked at her. His arms were folded together, causing the blue shirt he wore to form creases. His dark pants did the same. It was probably the effect of his anger.
"Mr Mark maybe I should come back when you're calm and no longer angry," she suggested but in a low voice. She heard her own panic in her voice even though she was trying to hide it.
Mr Mark glared at the little woman standing before him in anger. Even if the white shirt and dark pants she wore made her look innocent, he knew she would be exactly the same as her father. After all, the man had birthed her and would have surely raised her to be like him.
"You heard what I said. You are fired!" Mr Mark repeated this time slowly so that she would register every word.
She let out a shaky breath and tried her luck again. "You cannot fire me for no reason. Which is why I am suggesting again that I come back when you're calmer," she protested.
"Zara Lawman! I don't ever want to see you here again!" Mr Mark exclaimed.
This caught Zara off-guard so much so that she flinched at his tone. Her eyes were wide open as she glared at him in shock. Zara could not afford to be fired at the moment. She, along with the rest of her family needed all the money they could get their hands on. She could not just accept being fired like that.
"Mr Mark, at least tell me why and give me a chance to defend myself. Please," Zara begged.
"Your father was caught stealing today!" Mark exclaimed.
For a moment, all sounds seemed to stop as what Mark told her registered into her head. Then slowly, the sounds came back.
"What?" Zara asked in a low and confused voice.
"That's right! The truth about your family has been revealed. Your father is a thief and what more would a thief produce as his offspring? A thief as well!" Mark accused.
Zara felt a migraine beginning to form in her head. Everything was becoming too much to process. Her father was no thief. He was the nicest man she had ever met. What was her boss talking about?
"My Dad is no thief. He could never even steal the smallest of things," Zara defended in a weakening voice. Her eyes started to water the more she thought of the situation.
"You cannot fool me with that voice and those teary eyes. I'm sure you were waiting for the perfect moment to grab all my money and disappear! Your game is up!" Mark yelled.
Zara stared at her boss like he was an alien. She could not believe he was the one saying this to her. Countless times, he had left his money unguarded and she had helped him take care of his belongings but today, he had turned his back on her. He had forgotten all her good deeds.
Zara let out a pathetic but painful laugh. "It's funny how I used to work myself up just to make your store run smoothly. Today you stand here and accuse me of being a thief. I'm afraid I will not even dream of continuing to work with an ungrateful man like you. Goodbye Mr Mark. Sorry for troubling you," Zara concluded and dropped her shop attendant's tag hard on the counter. Then she turned around and walked out of the gift shop without another word.
Mark only stared at her in anger. Her words had struck a chord within him. He wanted to say something but his tongue had gotten tied. He only gritted his teeth in anger as he watched her leave.
The unshed tears in Zara's eyes only added up as she walked towards her house. People passed her without caring about the expression on her face. She was almost invincible to them. Zara wondered what would become of her father. Had he been arrested? Was he okay?
Zara was sure it was all a misunderstanding. She knew that her father could never steal. But why did it happen to him? Why did he have to suffer?
Zara had gotten so lost in her thoughts that she did not notice a van coming in fast towards her. When she noticed it, it was already too late and she got frozen in fear. Her heart stopped and she immediately knew it was over for her.
Suddenly, a hand pulled her out of the way at the eleventh hour and enveloped her in a tight hug.
"Fool!" The driver yelled as he drove off without stopping once.
Zara did not pay attention to the driver or whatever he had to say. All she could focus on was the hug. She felt warmth. It was the first thing that hit her and it was the first thing her brain thought of registering. Then followed comfort and safety. All this she got from that one hug. Zara immediate recognised the person who had saved her without looking into his face. She recognized him from the way he smelt and the warmth that he was offering her. It was only when she was with him that she felt all those feelings radiating from him and towards her.
It was Kelvin.
He pulled her away from his chest and looked into her eyes."Zara where had you gotten yourself lost to? What were you thinking about? You could have died there? Are you trying to get yourself killed?" He questioned her. His worry was evident in his voice.
Instead, Zara was lost in the sea of deep blue that rested in his eyes. She watched the fair skin wrinkle each time he blinked.
Suddenly, Kelvin gasped. "You've been crying! What happened? Who hurt you? Did they—" he stopped exclaiming halfway as understanding bestowed itself upon him. "You heard about what happened to Paul, didn't you?" He finally asked in a low tone.
Zara widened her eyes as she found out that he also knew about it. "So it is true? He was caught?" Zara asked as a new panic started to build itself within her.
"You do not need to worry about that. Rita called me and I sorted it all out. Your father is fine," Kelvin tried to assure her.
Zara was somewhat happy that her mother had thought of calling him but she also wondered why she had not called her too. Her mother did not even inform her about the situation.
"My father can never steal. He's not a thief. You know that right?" Zara tried to convince Kelvin.
"I do but that is not what the entire city thinks right now. There's also nothing I can do to clarify or prove his innocence," Kelvin informed her allowing his hands to fall freely by his sides. The gesture made his hands hit his denim pants as well as the white t-shirt he wore over the pants.
This only made Zara more upset than she already was. "What is going to become of my Dad?" She asked.
"He's fine. They won't press charges. I was able to talk them out of it but I guess it did not stop people from spreading rumors," Kelvin assured.
"But at what cost?" Zara asked for she knew what he had to do in return. He would have had to buy them off with some money. She did not want Kelvin spending more money on her. It only made her feel more indebted to her.
Kelvin understood the look on her face. "Zara, the money is nothing. I would do anything for you. I care about you more than you can imagine. I'm sure you know that," Kelvin told as her as he placed his palm on her cheeks.
Kelvin further pulled her away from where they stood and led her into a park that was close by. He knew that among other things, Zara loved walking in the park.
He found a tree and and led Zara to it. The tree was tall and had large branches that spread into thousands of leaves. It had a good shade. Kelvin thought it was the perfect spot to take Zara. He came to a stop under the tree and took his time to stare at the woman he had been in love with even before he knew what love meant. He watched her as she stared at the enormous tree. It was no new tree. He had brought her here countless times but each time, it had its own magic and made the time spent beautiful.
He smiled and looked away. If he was ever told to define beauty, then Zara would be his definition of beauty. She was everything he ever wanted yet he was not sure she realised it.
"W— why did you smile?" she asked him.
"No, it's nothing," he waved it away.
Zara was suddenly filled with the urge to find out what had made him smile. At that moment, she had forgotten her pain.
"Tell me. What is it? Is there perhaps something on my face? Are you making fun of me?" She demanded with a frown and a pout.
"Why will I make fun of you? I would never. I have no reason to. It's just that sometimes I find it hard to believe that you are mine. You have no idea how I see you. Your beauty is on another level!" Kelvin exclaimed.
Since she wanted to know so badly, Kelvin saw it as a good way to distract her from her pain. If he could only keep her attention on him.
The statement made Zara blush. She shut her eyes in the process. "Stop it! You're making me shy!" Zara whined.
Kelvin only laughed. He waited for her to look up again before hitting her with his next blow. "Can I get a kiss?" he requested.
Zara widened her eyes and peered around to see if anyone was listening.
"We're still in public! People are watching!" Zara exclaimed.
Kelvin only laughed harder. Sometimes, Zara behaved as if they were still in high school. She was already twenty four and he was twenty six. He decided to do the dirty job himself.
Without giving her a heads up, he grabbed her by her small waist and pulled her towards himself. She was about to protest when he shut her up with his lips.
As expected, her lips were soft and warm against his. It gave him a kind of warmth in the depth of his stomach. It made his heart flutter and he wanted more of her.
Suddenly, a strong pang hit his chest. He grunted in pain and broke away from the kiss.
"Are you okay?" Zara asked alarmed.
"I'm fine, you don't need to wo—" he began and stopped halfway as another pang hit him. He grunted in pain.
Kelvin's fingers started vibrating and he suddenly found it hard to stand. He lost his balance but Zara was quick to catch him. She sat him down on the floor slowly.
"Kelvin? What is wrong?" she asked in a shaky voice.
"I'm okay. You don't need t—" Kelvin began but was interrupted with a series of coughs. He brought his fingers to his lips to cover his mouth and that was when he felt liquid that was too thick to be his saliva.
He shakily took his hand away and saw that it was stained with crimson liquid. He was coughing up blood. Zara stared at him with wide eyes. He also looked back up at her and as if on cue, another pang hit him hard. This time he doubled over in pain as he could not bear him.
"Help! Somebody call the ambulance!" Zara screamed in shock.
Kelvin started coughing again until suddenly, his body went limp. Zara's shock only increased as she tried her possible best not to let her panic get to her.
"Kelvin?"
There was no response. He was not moving.
He stepped out of his house and scanned the area for his car. He ran his fingers through his hair and adjusted his transparent glasses. He was sure that he looked breath taking. His deep green eyes was one of his greatest charm. He smiled. It was always the aim.As if on cue, a black Peugeot pulled in through the gate. His smile widened. His driver was always on time. The car came to a stop beside him. The window pane came down and revealed the one who was driving. It was a fair skinned man with a low cut hair. He was dressed in black suit and pants. He smiled at him. "Hello Jeff, always on time," the man commended his driver.Jeff smiled and unlocked the doors for his boss. He would have walked out to open the door for him but his boss had stopped him from doing so a long time ago. "Thank you sir, it pleases me to serve you," Jeff answered. His boss shut the door behind himself and watched his driver from behind the seat. "How many times will I correct you, Jeff? Call me Oliver. I
Zara was restless. She kept pacing to and fro as she waited for news from the doctors who had all gone in to save him. Each time she peered into the room from where she stood, she could see them trying to stabilize him. All their hands were on him and the only time he moved, was when he was forced to by their machines. She was scared of losing her best and only friend. Kelvin had become more than a friend to her. He had become the man she loved. He was everything to her. She could not imagine a world where he did not exist.Other Nurses and doctors hurried down the corridor as they tried to reach their patients. Zara kept hoping that one of the doctors inside the room with Kelvin would stop and give her the news she was waiting for. Or maybe Kelvin would just walk out of the ICU and tell her that he was perfectly fine. Images of him coughing up blood started coming to her again. That moment had been the scariest moment of her life. She wondered what could have caused it. Had he perha
“In other words, I will be ruined?” Oliver asked almost to himself than to Anne.“Yes, we will be ruined,” Anne made it official.Oliver felt his breathing lose its calmness again. He felt his world begin to crack. It was crashing down before his eyes. He had never once thought that a day like this would come. What had he done to deserve this fate? “What’s causing it?” Jeff asked, breaking Oliver out of his thoughts. It was when he asked the question that Oliver realized he had not thought of asking that same question. If they knew what was causing it then they could find a solution to it. Maybe, just maybe, he would not have to be ruined after all.“Apparently, you’re a monster and you disrespect women,” Anne announced.Oliver narrowed his eyes at her as if she had said something that made sense to no one in the world.“I remember the reporters outside kept yelling things like that to him,” Jeff added. There was a small frown on his face as he remembered the way they attacked his bo
How was Zara going to save Kelvin? How was she going to arrange the money?Zara stepped out of the hospital. Traces of dried tears were evident on her cheeks. The cold air hit her body and she felt an involuntary shiver run down her spine. She suddenly felt so alone. She felt like she was losing the one person who had always been with her through the hardships that she had faced. She wanted support. She wanted a shoulder to cry on.Zara did not want to go to her mother or father. She had no idea what condition they were in. They were probably still shaken by what happened to her father earlier that day. If she told them what had happened, it could get her mother sick. The last thing she wanted was another sick person on her.Zara took in a deep breath. Wearing the pity like it was a garment, was not going to help her. She had promised Kelvin that she would find a way to save him. If it meant begging on the streets then she was going to do it.She checked her bank balance on her phone
"So the question is, will you, Zara Lawman, accept to be my fake wife?" Oliver demanded.Zara froze. She felt so many emotions yet she could not identify any of them. Her breathing quickened. She felt her heart begin to pound so loud that she almost went deaf. A solution to her problem had been presented to her but what it required was quite hard. She had to marry another man to save Kelvin. How was Kelvin going to take the news? How was she going to live with herself?Oliver saw the hesitation in her eyes. He did not want to pressure her and at the same time, he did not want to let her go. She looked like the perfect person for the job."You do not have to give me an answer right away. You can go back to the hospital. Have a chat with Kelvin and call me when you make your decision. Is that okay with you?" Oliver asked her.Zara finally felt herself begin to calm. "I think this is a better idea. I should talk to Kelvin first," Zara agreed."Here's my card. You can call me when you ma
"Yes. Yes it is," She answered.Oliver felt his heart skip a beat. He had not expected her to call this soon. Jeff who was resting on the couch beside Oliver turned his attention to Oliver as he noticed the change in his mood."I did not think I would ever hear your voice again," Oliver muttered the moment he regained his voice."I have spoken to Kelvin," Zara continued. Oliver caught the hope in her voice. She did not sound as defeated as she sounded when he spoke to her earlier.Jeff kept staring at Oliver as if staring like that would help him hear everything Zara had to say."And?" Oliver asked. It was when he caught himself breathing heavily that he realised he was nervous. He threw a short glance at Jeff and Jeff rose his brows at Oliver in response."He wants to see you first. He wants to be sure he can trust you. If you can convince him that he has no reason to worry then yes, I'll do it," Zara explained.Oliver nodded his head as he took in the information. It was something
Marriage was supposed to be between two people who loved themselves dearly. But instead, people were getting married for different reasons which did not include love. At least, Zara’s reason included love. She was trying to save the man she loved. Oliver could still try to claim that his reason was also for love since he was trying to save the one thing that meant the world to him after everyone else abandoned him— his company. Maybe in doing so, he was also protecting other people's love. Maybe so many lives asides that of Kelvin’s were depending on this marriage. Which was why they had to make it work no matter what. They could not screw it up.Both parties were seated opposite one another. Kelvin and Zara sat together on one side of the table. Oliver, Jeff and Anne sat on the other side of the rectangular table. They were seating in an office Anne had managed to arrange. Even Oliver wondered how she pulled it off but he decided not to ask any questions. The marriage documents wer
Kelvin watched Zara step into the space he was waiting in.For some reason, he was unsure about the whole dilemma and he cursed himself under his breath, for having such a diagnosis. As she got closer, he stood up as she gestured it was time to leave.Jeff stopped them abruptly, he definitely had something to say. Kelvin was so impatient as he rolled his eyes wondering what it could be.Ignoring Kelvin’s attitude, he turned to Zara. “I have to drop you off and take you to the park after you are done. The contract has begun and we can’t afford to create another scandal.”Kelvin raised a brow trying to decipher what that truly meant.Zara knew he was going to make a big deal out of it, she quickly chipped in to avoid misunderstandings. “Kelvin, the contract starts today and I have to move into Oliver’s house. I told him I have to tell my parents about it, so that’s where we are headed first.”Kelvin was not happy with this arrangement and he tried to raise a protest. “Does it have to be
This was very bad. Cold sweat broke out of Kelvin's body as he worked a thousand scenarios of how today would end. Was this the end? Had she found out? Was Oliver's company and reputation going to plummet down the drain? He was very certain that the woman in front of him was Vanessa Willow. Of course, she was the one, the one that had caused problems earlier for Oliver. If she was here, it was bad news for him, it was instant death. Kelvin nodded his head at Vanessa as he greeted her. He looked at Rita as she smiled at her and he wondered what signal he could give her to back off from the crazy woman in front of him. How could someone so beautiful be as evil as the press portrayed her to be?“Kelvin!” Rita called out. She noticed that he had been staring out into space for a long time. Kelvin greeted Rita briefly and turned to Vanessa. "I hope we are making you comfortable ma'am," Kelvin said politely and wore a smile on his face. "How about we give you a feel of our VIP spaces
Vanessa stared at the restaurant bewildered. She had expected it to be a small restaurant where she could just grab her grubs and leave at the speed of light. But they had something going on here. Vanessa stared at the description of the restaurant and looked back at what stood before her. The front of the restaurant was true glass, but at the same time, it offered privacy to its customers. Vanessa slowly stepped out of her car and looked at the glowing name on the signboard.“ZAMAN'S GRILLS,” she spelled it out. It looked like she wouldn't be able to get in without a reservation, although there were chairs outside, but she didn't want to be hijacked by the media. Vanessa made up her mind and entered the main restaurant, the interior was even better, with the makings of a 4.5-star restaurant. She settled into a chair and stared at the servery, where a middle-aged man and woman were working. Those middle-aged people were Paul and Rita Lawman. “Uh hi, I wanted to make a reservation
Kelvin stared at the name Paul had scribbled on a pad for the restaurant. He suppressed a laugh in him and looked at him. "Don't tell me," Kelvin laughed. They were all seated. In the Lawmans' new home. Paul jokingly hit Kelvin, “Oh please, what is wrong with Zaman's Grills?” He turned to his wife waiting for her response. Rita held her forehead and turned to Kelvin. “Paul is more obsessed with his daughter than I. It is all his doing, not like I have a better name yet," Rita saidKelvin adjusted himself in his seat and took in the living room. Oliver had taken his time decorating his house. God knows how much he had splashed into the project. "You should have seen Zara when she came in some days ago, she has grown up," Paul started. His eyes gleamed as he talked about Zara. "Really? In what aspect?" Kelvin asked with renewed interest as he clasped his hands. "Well, for one. Zara has always been a grown up but it seems like she grew up again! Zara found it hard to convey her fe
Zara sat cross-legged in front of her parents. They sat in their new home, and she had decided to visit them. She preferred breaking the news to them face to face, rather than on the phone. She had left Jeff in the car outside while she talked to her parents inside. And besides, it had been a while since she had seen them. "Dad, we are getting you a shop."Those words hadn't been digested completely in Rita and Paul's ears. One could say they had trouble processing it. They seemed to be lagging, at times. Zara sighed and rested her hands on her thighs. She uncrossed her legs and sat more comfortably. She used that opportunity to look at the house very well. She could see that Oliver had taken his time to furnish it well with high-grade furniture. Wasn't he doing too much, too much to be comfortable?"Zara, what are you saying?" Paul asked first. He seemed to have processed it faster than his wife.Zara sighed and stood up. "Mum, Dad, remember those times when you used to say you
Zara felt something ominous as she stared at her phone. Vanessa's video was trending, and she wondered what she was up to this time. Thankfully, she wasn't her problem. Oliver would deal with her sooner. She sat in the garden and looked up at the sky. The sun was high up in the sky, but it was mild on the skin because of autumn. She looked down at the flowers and thought about talking about the plants to Oliver when her phone rang. Zara stared at the ID and put it to her ear immediately. "Yes, Mom?" Zara answered. Kelvin must have already told them about it by now. She just hoped her mum wouldn't throw hard questions her way. "My baby girl, you have gotten us what we have always wanted," Rita's voice broke out as soon as she picked up.Zara sensed happiness in her mother's voice. It has been forever since she heard her mother sound that happy. She could also hear soft sobs at the end of the receiver. "Oh Rita, are you going to start on the call and keep sobbing?" Zara heard her
Vanessa had become quite miserable. In fact, "quite miserable," was an understatement. She had reached the point where she had completely embodied Squidward's point of view, that famous miserable character from that legendary kiddies show. Her reputation had plummeted downwards, she couldn't even go outside to buy her groceries because of the way people looked at her. Her suspension at work was still ongoing, she didn't even expect to be called back after what had happened. Oliver Russell. Vanessa grabbed a ceramic vase from the bedside table and flung it at the wall. It shattered into a million pieces, with the sound bouncing back and forth in the large room. She grabbed her bare knees and looked at the mirror. She was losing it. Oliver Russell. Vanessa stood up and rested her hands in front of the dressing mirror. Her eyes were puffy from not getting enough sleep and she had gained some mass from staying at home, lazing around since last week. "Oliver, I will crush you!" Vane
Oliver smiled back at Zara with his hands in his pocket. Zara slowly stood up and shook her head. It was impossible, why was he going that far? He was getting too involved with them. "No, I can't accept that," Zara shook her head. "You can cut off my bonuses, I barely use them anyway. You can use the money and pay for the—" Oliver cleared his throat and Zara stopped talking. He looked down at her and cocked his brow. "Tell me the truth. If I left it to you, you wouldn't have been able to do it, even with the bonuses. Are you a masochist? Can you even repay me?" The smile on his had disappeared. Zara looked to the ground and held her palms together. She felt her palms were the only ones warming her up in front of Oliver's cold stare. "I—I—""You can't. So instead of partying with the money I have, or going to the brothel, I want to help your family, and you are not stopping me," Oliver paused. He saw that he had been coming a bit too strong there. He watched as Zara's body tensed
"We need to talk."A sentence with four words. It sounded more intense than it was intended to, partly because Zara was trying to avoid Oliver. She hadn't forgotten what had happened on the rooftop that day. She knew it. She had almost kissed Oliver. "We need to talk."She simply stared at the message that was displayed on the screen. It had been there since morning, and she hadn't even bothered to reply. “Curse you, Oliver,” Zara flustered. She had successfully ignored Oliver for the last few days after that incident. She beat herself up every time she remembered it. What killed her the most was that she could not tell Kelvin about it. How would she even start? She knew it was almost an act of betrayal. Kelvin himself had been very busy for the past few days, his cafe boomed well. He was very happy. No way she was going to spoil it for him. Zara straightened her dress and heaved a deep sigh in front of the mirror. Her face stared back at her. She looked less confident than the wa
Oliver flexed his fingers in front of his laptop. The tech seemed alien to him. How many days had he missed work? Four days? Two days? Well, none of that mattered since he was—Anne barged into the office and shook Oliver out of his thoughts. Oliver blinked several times at her and she simply stared back at him. Oliver thought he would have another episode of severe scolding for dumping his work on her. "Oliver, I found what might become a problem later," Anne dropped her laptop on Oliver's table. She had taken Oliver by surprise. He thought he would have gotten scolded again. "What are you talking about?" Oliver raised a brow in confusion. Anne slapped her forehead lightly. She had forgotten that she had left Oliver out of the loop since Vanessa's last show. "Okay, let me place it like this since you have not been around for a while," she flashed Oliver a frown and he swallowed. He raised his hands in submission and Anne continued. "I ended up putting myself in Vanessa. More lik
