Emily's POV.
I felt the strange wave of dizziness hit me suddenly again as I went about my daily routine in my room in the mansion that I had come to know as my home.
A wave of chills washed over me as I recalled the familiarity of this feeling.
It was a few minutes past six am. I had woken up later than I should have.
I rushed into the bathroom in a flash and emptied the content of my stomach. My hair stuck to my face as small beads of perspiration formed on my forehead.
I dabbed my face with a small face towel and rushed back to the room.
With weak hands, I picked up the hair brush that had been going through my hair before to resume, brushing my hair and packing it in a bun. Mrs Wilson, my mother-in-law, had instructed that my hair be styled before I stepped out of my room.
It made me wonder if I was such an eyesore for her. She could barely stand my presence sometimes.
I rushed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for the family.
The table has to be set by six thirty. I was behind schedule, so I prepared the meal as best as I could within the limited time.
Soon, the table was spread. I rang the bell to inform everyone that breakfast was ready and they all came out for breakfast except Eric.
My husband.
"Emily, the chicken looks soggy. Can't you do anything right?", Mrs Wilson asked grimly. She had her lips pressed in a thin line.
My eyes fell to my feet in shame.
Moments like this made me grateful for my inability to speak. I was born mute and had never spoken a word since I was born.
"Mother, you know she can't respond. She's just a dumb twit we have to bear with", Alicia, my sister-in-law, chipped, taking a bite of a stewed potato.
"Your inability to cook good meals for your family is as bad as your inability to speak", she cursed under her breath but it was audible enough for me to hear as I sat just beside her at the table.
Eric soon descended down the stairs, and all eyes turned to him.
His appearance always had a way of making me shiver with mixed feelings.
Dashing was the words that I had screamed in my mind when I first met him as a young girl. He was a fine man indeed. Every girl would want to be his wife, and I was no exception. That was till I truly became his wife, and all the hell he had was let loose.
I mustered a smile at him as he took his seat beside his mother at the table and greeted everyone, but I was met with a cold, unfriendly face. He ignored me.
I felt invisible, as always, as everyone chattered aroud breakfast about anything and everything till breakfast was finished soon and I cleared the dishes.
"Emily, don't forget that we would be going out for dinner tonight so you don't have to make dinner. It's a relief to you and to us", Alicia commented snidely before walking out oulf the dining room.
This was my life in the Wilson's mansion.
Tears spilt down my cheeks as I recalled the good times. The times when Grandpa Richard was alive.
He was the one who had encouraged the Wilson's to adopt me. I never knew my parents. All I recalled when I thought of my past was the orphanage and grandpa Richard's smiley face when he had come to check out the orphanage and saw me crouched down in a corner with my rag doll.
The years I spent in the Wilson's mansion with him around were the only blissful times I had had here. He understood sign language very much, so I spent almost every day with him, and we conversed about so many things.
When he died, I was plunged into another realm of darkness not just because I missed him terribly but also because he could no longer protect me from the torment of his children and grandchildren.
It only got worse when they realised his last wish was for me to get married to his grandson, Eric Wilson. He wanted me to bear the heir that would continue the family legacy.
I was overjoyed initially because I thought he would be like his grandfather, but he had turned out to be nothing like that.
He only used me to satisfy his sexual desires and left me emotionally and physically drained afterwards.
I shook my head to get rid of the thoughts and rushed to my room after doing the dishes. I did not share a room with Eric. He refused to let that happen. He only came to my room when he needed to release steam in the form of his sperm.
I recalled when I had first found out I was pregnant. I had mixed feelings. I was overjoyed but also confused.
I had rushed over to Eric to tell him the news, but he had shunned me for the most of the day, telling me to stay out of his way.
I gestured to him that I had something important to tell him, but he only shook his head and asked me to get lost.
He had barged into my room later that night to have sex with me again as usual. After he released, he was about to leave when I held him back.
"What is it?", he has asked me, pulling on his pants with a drown on his face.
I rushed over to the drawer and pulled out the pregnancy test kit.
The crease on his face had deepened with impatience, but I had smiled at him in assurance while slowly bringing the test into his view.
"Look, I can't deal with this right now. I have to work. Excuse me, E-"
He had trailed off upon seeing the positive pregnancy test.
"You're pregnant?", he had asked, and I nodded ecstatically, trying to read the expression on his face.
"This was not part of the plan, Emily"
I frowned and gestured to him that we were married because his grandfather wanted us to have an heir, but he had angrily thrown the pregnancy test on the bed!
"Listen here, dumb woman. You can not be pregnant. This marriage of ours is strictly a marriage of duty to each other. Don't get your hopes up thinking we are in love or we will do anything people in love do"
Tears streamed down my cheeks, but his dark eyes remained cold.
"You will get rid of that thing in your stomach, Emily. It can not stay!! Okay?!"
I tried to gesture to him that I did not want to, but he raised his hand to stop me.
"You don't have a choice, Emily. It's all about duty. It's my baby, but I do not want it."
He turned to leave, but I rushed over to hold his hand. Without thinking twice, he shoved me harshly, and I fell on the bed, sobbing loudly as I watched his retreating back.
Tears rolled down my eyes as I sat on my bed, recalling that painful moment. I recalled how the abortion process went.
It left me torn!
Eric's POV.We were to have dinner, a family tradition we held regularly, at a fancy five-star restaurant that screamed luxury and class.I walked towards the table we had reserved with Emily in tow.I tugged on the edge of my navy blue Armani tuxedo and raised my hand to look at my golden wristwatch. We were just on time for the dinner despite the mild traffic."Welcome, son", my mother greeted chirpingly and I nodded in greeting to her."Did you have to look like you just fell from a rose bush?", my sister, Alicia, snidely remarked, giving Emily a thorough once-over.Emily turned beet red and kept her head down, as she took a seat beside me.We had some extended family members around a as well. My mother's sister and some aunts were also around."Eric, dear, give your aunt Melinda a kiss", aunt Melinda cooed from her seat.I felt reluctant. Mushy reunions were not my thing. Nonetheless, I placed a soft kiss on her cheeks, keeping my expression blank."It's so good to see you. Look a
Emily's POV.I was downtrodden! He asked me to get out of his car so late in the night.I stood outside the car with its door wide open, and Eric's girlfriend sauntered over to the seat I formally occupied, brushing my shoulder harshly. The chilly air hit my skin, and I shivered slightly, standing beside the car."I don't know why you won't just divorce her!", the lady's voice was carried through the air to my hearing, and my heart shattered even more.It hurt enough that his mother was talking about our divorce already, but hearing this stranger talk about it as well made me want to scream in frustration."Baby, you know I can't. Not yet at least", Eric explained desperately, and she huffed in annoyance."You've probably fallen in love with her and spent want to be associated with me anymore," she snapped. I caught sight of her arms folded across her frame.Eric's face as he tried to make her see reasons with him made my stomach churn with an unexplainable feeling."Come on, babe. Yo
Emily's POV"The clients whose wedding we just designed for said to thank you personally, ma'am," Rachel called from the door of my office, and I lifted my head to face her.A pleasant smile broke out on my face. My customers' satisfaction was my satisfaction.I nodded at her in acknowledgement. "No problem, Rachel. It's a pleasure doing business with them", I replied dismissively, returning my attention to the papers I had been attending to on my desk."They sent me this for you, ma'am. They put in a good word for us to a family who have a huge wedding coming up", she said excitedly. She placed a copy of the wedding invitation on my desk and I stared at it briefly."Alright. Get stated on the research for aesthetics", I replied. She nodded and was about to exit my office when she turned back quickly."They also paid beyond the price we told them. They were that pleased, Ms Emily" she said, sounding excited."Oh! Okay", I said with a warm smile and she nodded excitedly before l leavi
Eric's POVI adjusted my jacket as I strode briskly across the large living room with my leather briefcase in my hand and a permanent scowl etched on her face."Eric, darling. Are you off to work?"My mother rushed over to me, placing her two hands on my arms as she tried to get me to slow down."But-We have not even talked about the wedding preparations," she argued, pulling me to a seat.I sighed.A wedding. That has been all that has been on her mind since Emily left. It made a splitting headache break out in my head.Lola could not have been happier when I had been made to propose to her and introduce her to the family. Her wish was finally granted, but it felt like my hopes had just been dashed.Any hope of being free from my mother's controlling grip would be dashed when I get married to Lola, who seemed to be under her spell. Any hope of finding and reuniting with Emily would be dashed, and the thought of that alone made my facial expression harden.I could not take it."I ha
Emily's POVI stared around in a daze at the buildings and the streets where I was once familiar with as they fleetingly disappeared.Nothing much had changed in the past five years.I recognised the street where the Wilsons mansion was as the cab drove past it. I was not planning to stay with them for the event. I would rather die than stay in the same house that held all my bad memories that I had locked away."Ma'am, we just passed the street you talked about. Where would you like to get off, please?"I thought about it for a while before giving Jim a pleasant smile. "Take me to the nearest guest house to this place," I ordered with a firm voice, and he nodded, stepping on the gas of the car.Thoughts of my daughter consumed me as i watched the houses and buildings on the side of the road disappear as we sped past them.Mia had made a fuss when she heard that I was leaving for work. She cried a lot, making me cry as well. I had never spent a day away from her. This was a new expe
Eric's POV"The cake has to be perfect; nothing like you have ever created. It has to be the most spectacular thing anyone has ever seen. It has to be talk-of-the-town gorgeous", my mother went on describing to the small but first-class baker who sat opposite her."Yes, ma'am. We deliver only the best, and yours won't be an exception. ""Listen to me, it was to be huge. Very tall. We are using a hall with large ceilings, so it has to be much taller than the couple or even the entrance to the hall. It will be bought in through the roof. It must have a grand entrance", she kept describing. The woman nodded, swallowing hard. "Of course"Lola interjected. "Make it pink, please. Pink and white with gold edges. Pink is my favourite colour. ""Pink," the woman noted audibly while writing into a book in her hands."Also, please add some tiny gold bells..."I zoned out of their conversation, which was going on in the li
Emily's POV I scoffed for the umpteenth time as I sat in the restaurant waiting for Max, who was running late. He had sent me a text to inform me of something which came up. He was twenty minutes late already. I drummed my manicured fingers on the table. I was grateful for the text from Ceclia Wilson that informed me of her change of plans. According to her, the groom would not be around. I was so glad that I did not have to go to the house that haunted me with bad memories that morning. It had been postponed to later that evening. "Hey, Emily," Max greeted hastily, plopping into the chairs with a sigh. "You're welcome," I drawled with a hint of sarcasm in my sweet voice. I did not appreciate being delayed like that. I would have probably drawn up some designs to show to the bride if I did not have to be here as Max had pressured. "I'm sorry I'm late. I had to finish up a couple of things at the office. It was urgent", he explained, and I nodded with a smile. "Okay
Eric's POVSnap! My pen snapped in half as I applied intense pressure to it with my thumb.Dammit! That lying and manipulating witch! My brows were scrunched as I glared at my laptop screen, seeing nothing but red.It was funny to think that I actually loved Lola and was willing to try to work the marriage out if I never found Emily.I couldn't believe I had not noticed the signs earlier. All her sickly sweet tones, her persistence, her pressure, her 'I love you's'. They were all fake. She was just a damn puppet in my mother's hands. My mother had gone far this time. She would really go to any length to ensure that she could control me and make me live according to her wishes and rules, but this was just the height!I had returned back to work the previous night immediately after I overheard their conversations. I just did not want to hear from or see either Lola or my mum anymore. My office was a rather satisfying place to stay than to stay anywhere close to those manipulating and s
