- Chapter 8 -
Dorin got up early the next morning. He went to the small toilet, did his morning rituals, and put on his new clothes. He looked at the small mirror, at his light brown eyes and unruly brown hair that fell to his shoulders in waves. It was still summer, though the morning air was already chilly in the city. His aunt told him that students were required to wear proper attire when inside the campus. After dressing up in his uniform, he climbed the small ladder going up to Seb's bunk and threw the bed curtains open.
"Good morning Seb!" he called energetically, "Did you have a good night's sleep?"
"..."
He looked at his roommate. The other had a pillow over his head, his back to him. He raised his right hand and waved angrily at Dorin.
"Oh, not a morning person, huh?" asked Dorin, undaunted by the other's action, "It's already 5 in the morning! The sun will be out soon!" he jumped down and started putting on his boots. He was still lacing it up when he heard the closet open and close. Thinking Seb was already up, he turned around, ready to greet him once more, but there was nobody there.
"Damn, these laces are really a handful..." he grumbled.
He frowned, whistled to call the wind, and with the flip of his finger, directed the laces of his boots to tie themselves.
He ended up with a big knot in the end.
"Drat!" he cursed under his breath, "The magic in here really has gone thin..."
Just as he was redoing his laces, he heard the closet open again. Upon turning around, he saw Seb with his head inside the closet.
"Finally up?" he asked merrily, "I was thinking of having a stroll around campus before the Photography Class starts..."
[SUNRISE AT 7 AM!!!!!] was suddenly shoved in front of Dorin’s face. Seb's homely face, as usual, carried no emotion, but the slate was slightly shaking as he held it.
"Oh, is that so? Where I came from, the sun rises before 6 in the summer..."
[THIS ISN’T WHERE YOU CAME FROM. Sun rises earlier in the East!!!!]
"Oh, sorry, well, since you're up already, we might as well have an early breakfast, right?" Dorin said with a grin. Seb stood staring at him. He finally turned around, climbed back up his bunk bed, and closed the curtains. Later the slate was thrown out the curtain, narrowly hitting Dorin on the head.
[I WAKE UP AT 7!!!] It said.
Dorin decided to leave him alone. He was about to open the door when he remembered the locking spell. Thinking that Seb would rather not be disturbed again, he decided to open it himself.
"A triple lock spell..." he said, his eyes closed, sensing the tendrils of magic or mana like a silky thread of a spider's web. "...with a fail-safe to alarm the caster..."
Carefully, with eyes still shut, he raised a hand to touch one tendril at a time.
Thaum is the universal measure used for magic. It appears as tendrils that are visible only to a trained magus’ eyes. Dorin choose one thaum or thread unit of mana from hundreds of tendrils, he then pulled it aside and swiped a finger to cut it.
"Good, the alarm didn't go off..." he thought proudly to himself.
There was a sudden gasp from the bunk beds. He turned around and saw Seb's head stuck outside the curtain, his lilac eyes, wide with disbelief! When he saw Dorin staring, he quickly pulled back inside.
"Um..." said Dorin, "I'm going out now..." the other made no reply. "I'll come back at 7 to pick you up."
After waiting for a reply that never came, he finally opened the door and stepped outside.
The hall in the dormitory was still dark. Only a couple of lights on the wall illuminated the way to the staircase.
“Electric lights!” Dorin mumbled to himself, remembering what his aunt told him when she brought him to the dorms. “I should study more on electricity, maybe I could use it back home.”
Since the room was on the 3rd floor, Dorin had to take 2 flights to get to the ground floor. He remembered Peter the dorm president said the kitchens were at the back, way east, while the shared baths were at the west. He didn't meet a single soul in the hallway as he went on his way.
"I guess they are all still sleeping..." he thought aloud as he went to the kitchens. It was still dark and empty, like the rest of the dorm.
It took Dorin a while to look for a light switch. He then proceeded to look for something to eat, or at least, prepare for breakfast. He found some bacon and eggs in a closet that automatically lit up when he opened it. It must have been a kind of icebox since it was very chilly inside. After finding enough ingredients, he faced the shiny new stove and raised his hand to start a fire with a snap.
A loud bang shook the whole dormitory!
One by one, the doors opened, sleepy students peeked out with questioning looks on their faces.
One particular door flung open on the third floor. Out ran Seb, hurrying to the kitchens where he found a blackened Dorin standing in front of the stove.
"Wow, that was some spark..." Dorin faced Seb, eyes wide open, not even appearing a bit shaken.
There were footsteps approaching. Without thinking, Seb took hold of Dorin's arm and ran out the back door. When they were a good distance away, he took out a glass orb from his pajama pocket and threw it at their feet.
When the smoke was gone, Dorin found himself face to face with an alarmed-looking Agate.
"What the hell are you doing here?!" She yelled at the two boys who suddenly fell on her bed. "You!" she pointed at Sebastian, "I told you not to place an anchor point in my room!" She looked closely at them and noticed her nephew's appearance. Her jaw dropped, speechless.
"Good morning au- Professor." Dorin tried to grin.
"What happened to you?!"
"I was just trying to cook some breakfast..."
[He blew up the dorm kitchen!] Seb wrote on his hand with a pen he found on the desk.
"My Lord!" was all Agate could reply.
"I just tried to turn on the stove, but when I called on fire to light it up, it suddenly blew up!" he tried to explain, "It was just a small spell! Nothing fancy, just a snap..."
At this he snapped his finger once more, causing a small fireball to hit the ceiling.
"What the hell!" screamed Agate.
She said a counterspell that stopped the fire from burning a hole in the wooden ceiling.
"This never happened before..." Dorin scratched his head, "Maybe because the magic here in the city is too thin and muddled?"
[In what way does that look thin and muddled?!?!?!??!] wrote Seb on a piece of paper he found on Agate's desk.
"Must be the charms..." Agate said thoughtfully, "His powers are out of control since we took all the debasers off..."
"Hmm... No wonder I feel so light..."
"You idiot!" She hit her nephew on the head then went to her desk and opened a drawer. She pulled a woven charm bracelet out. "You're lucky the stoves here have fire preventing spells that send most of the damage upward and out a fire chimney!" She threw the charm at Dorin. "But it's a wonder you're still standing after that! I actually heard the explosion from here!"
"What's this?" he asked. Seb was immediately at his side, eyeing the charm.
"It's an elemental suppressor I've been making since last night," Agate explained. "There are supposed to be 2 of them but I'm still working on the other one. Put it around your ankle and keep it hidden."
"Whoa... This is pure magic!" Dorin whispered, scrutinizing the charm. Beside him, Seb nods vigorously. The threads of mana were alive, flowing, the color ever-changing.
"That will last a month at most, as long as you don't use your powers frequently. By then you would be long gone and back home to mommy."
[MASTER! Please teach me!] Seb wrote on his outstretched arm as he knelt before the professor.
“NO.” Agate wrote on his forehead.
"Thank you, aunt Agate!" Dorin said as he took off his boot.
"Now, both of you go back to your room!"
She pointed at Dorin, said a cleansing spell, and gave a harrumph upon seeing his uniform look good as new again, albeit a bit wrinkled. "I'll talk to the dorm head later to sort out the mess. At the meantime, act as if you know nothing of the incident.” She raised her hand again, this time mumbling a longer spell. She pointed at the 2 students who suddenly vanished without a trace.
Agate sat back on her bed with a heavy sigh. She reached under her pillow and took out a faded old picture. There were 5 people in it. One, surprisingly, looked exactly like her. On her right was a sharp-looking young woman wearing a military uniform. A captain's pin was on her high collar, half-hidden in torrents of jet black hair. Her eyes were as green as sprigs sprouting on a snow-covered field. On her chest is a pin with a single rose surrounded by a crown of thorns.
"I'm doing my best to protect him, Hermione," she whispered, "I have never been keen about your plan to hide all these years, but if it is your will, then so be it." She frowned as she placed the picture back under the pillow. "He doesn't look like you though, more like great grandfather Philip," she thought, and with that thought, Agate Althea went back to sleep.

- Chapter 9 - Agate's spell had sent Dorin back in his room with Seb. Seb took out his slate and has been writing vigorously since they arrived. He's been asking him so many questions when all Dorin wanted was to have some breakfast. [How did you see the spell?] he asked, [my locking spell is a 1st class charm! you can't just unravel it by cutting a 'thaum'!] "But, that's just what I did, I can't explain it further..." Dorin said for the nth time, yet the other can't seem to accept his explanation. [then teach me!] Seb finally wrote. Dorin sighed. "Well, I guess that's the best way to show you..." He went to the door which was recently locked by his roommate and closed his eyes to concentrate. "Just feel the spell and look for the beginning, then trace the threads that make it up, thus you find out what the spell is all about, then you follow the pattern to find the end and look for the part that loops it togeth
- Ch 10 - Sebastian and Dorin ran. At the back of the North Dormitory, there was a small garden that opened to the woods, past that were several small buildings, one of which was a wooden cabin with a sign 'Photography Club' posted on a plank in front. Hanging on top of the double doors was a banner saying '5th Annual Photography Club Summer Camp'. Several people were standing around a table by the entrance. "Please sign here for attendance!" It was Anastasia. She brightened up when she saw Dorin with Seb and waved them closer. "Good morning Dorin! Good to see you made it on time." "Good morning!" Dorin said beaming. "Is the class about to start?" "In a couple of minutes, just sign your name here..." she pointed to a blank space in a list that was almost filled with names. Dorin signed the attendance sheet and turned around to thank Seb for taking him to the Photography Club when he noticed his friend signin
The two went on their way. From the main gates, they went straight ahead to the main school building, a vast castle which housed the business offices of the University, professors' dorms, and faculties for the 3 major Divisions, namely Military and Sports Division, Science and Technology Division, and the Magic and Arts Division. They turned to the left then, on a clockwise direction, where the main Military grounds lay. Most of the University's west side was for this division, including training grounds and sports fields which lay under the Military division. This includes horse tracks, soccer fields, basketball courts, Olympic size pools, gymnasiums and the likes. The West Dormitory is a large western style building used as barracks for the students with rooms housing as many as 60 students each. They could see 2 of them from a distance, side by side to separate the male from female soldiers. To the north was the Science Department's main building, a massive buildi
The three passed the Science department to buy some snacks on their way to the military department. The Science building had several food dispensers located in front and Dorin bought a lot of snacks from each. His satchel was near bursting when they finally went on their way to the shooting ranges. "How come we don't have food dispensers in our dorms?" Dorin asked, popping some candy inside his mouth. [Magic students kept messing around with it, the food inside always disappear in the morning] Seb with a wafer stick hanging out of his mouth. "Really, you two, hurry up and finish your snacks." Mar said with a frown, "Eating is prohibited in most areas in the Military department, particularly in the training fields." [Roger] Seb gulped his wafer. Dorin placed the rest of the candy in his mouth and chewed vigorously. "We'll be passing the Sky Gate." Mar pointed at a gatehouse with 2 guards standing in front. The grounds of the
"Sebastian!" Mar ran to her friend's side. "Are you okay?" "What the hell is going on out here?" yelled someone from behind. People in the barn rushed outside to see what all the commotion was about. "Major General Muller!" saluted Drill Sergeant Robinson, his face turning pale, "There's been a weapon malfunction." "Sir." Mar stood in attention, "A civilian has been injured by a weapon malfunction." The general approached and looked at the crater where the target used to be before checking on the two students on the ground. "Would someone tell me what happened here?" he demanded, when Dorin suddenly looked up. "Dorin?!" the general said with a gasp. "What are you doing here?!" Dorin stared at the general wide-eyed, thoughts swirling in his head. He looked down at his friend, unconscious in his arms. "Marcus," he said, staring back at the general, "my... friend... is hurt." Major General Marcus Muller stared at
"You sure you'll be okay?" Margarette asked for the umpteenth time. Sebastian nodded beside her. "If you're really sure..." "Don't worry Margarette, I'll take care of Seb," said Dorin. They were standing in front of the entrance of the East Dormitory. Sebastian's bandaged right hand hangs from a sling around his neck. It was a good thing that only the tips of his left fingers got injured. Mar looked at Seb one last time and sighed. "I'll see you guys tomorrow then," she said, turning around, "my training ends at 2 PM, I'll go to the Photography Club room as soon as I can. I'll keep in touch." The two were left in silence. They made their way to their room, not saying a word. Dorin placed his bag inside his closet and changed into a shirt. Seb took his coat off and was about to climb up his bed when Dorin stopped him. "Seb," he called to his roommate. "I want to apologize again for what happened." Seb nodded and proceeded to go up to his bunk b
Dorin woke up early the next day. He took a quick bath and hurried to the kitchen, leaving Sebastian snoozing on the top bunk. The kitchen was still under renovation, so he made his way outside to the canteen. It was still closed. He sighed, stifled a yawn, and waited for the cook to arrive with the key. He was getting hungry. Good thing he brought some snacks. He was humming while he ate, squatting on the ground, when a pair of rugged sneakers stopped in front of him. "What are you doing there?" asked a frowning guy in a frayed shirt and faded jeans. "The canteen won't open till 7 am." "Oh, I'm here for kitchen duty," Dorin said with a smile. "Do you have the keys?" he asked. "Only the head cook has the keys," the guy said, squatting on the ground away from Dorin. He had close-cropped reddish dark brown hair, a dark complexion, and sunburnt arms. "You aiming for scholarship too?" he asked, eyeing Dorin's new clothes. "Scholarship?"
- Criteria Finally, Josiah accepted the invitation. The 4 of them walked past several other clubhouses, mostly art and music-related. As they walked, the woods seemed to go deeper, the trees closer to each other, soon the light of the sun was covered by the trees. They followed a paved road which led to an archway, on top of which was the sign 'Magic Division Main Campus'. By the side was a sign saying 'Only bonafide magi are allowed to enter'. The group went straight through. As Dorin did, he felt as if he passed a kind of membrane, but the professor held his hand, as well as Josiah's, and they were able to make it inside the grounds. They walked for a couple of minutes more until a grand castle come into view. The castle stood in the midst of a vast clearing, surrounded by a wall of trees. Its grey walls looked ancient with moss and lichen growing from its cracks and covering it with vines. There was a veil of

It is true that it is hard to believe the words of a person who have betrayed you. But someone was ready to believe everything about Elazar, even if he was so against ‘her’ when she was still Eirian.[How I wish I had a chance to talk to Elazar before he disappeared!] Sebastian wrote to Dorin when they got back to the dorms one day. [If I only knew he was my ancestor, I would have asked him hundreds of questions about being a silver tongue!]“Question is, would he have answered your questions truthfully?” Johan said after reading his slate. “
News of a terrorist that infiltrated the University spread the next day. The name of the people involved and details of the actual event were withheld from the public due to security reasons, but almost all students in school already knew that it was about Dorin and his friend.“Wait, what was the name of his friend again?” they asked each other. “The real pretty one who had a different hair and eye color each day?”“I think it was Ariel?”“No, wasn’t it Ellen?”
Blinding light surrounded Eirian, as well as thick smoke as the lightning found it’s target.“Did we get her?!” asked Johan who stood on top of a raised dais made of bedrock. He raised himself just in time to evade Dorin’s lightning. “I... I think so...” said Xander who was trying to see through the dust and smoke.“Wind!” Venet called, blowing the smoke and debris away. “How annoying.” They saw Eirian climbing out of a thick glass bauble. “Are you really that vehement to stay here, Dorin?” “That’s right Eirian, and it’s not like I could leave, anyway,” replied Dorin. “Didn’t mother tell you that I can’t leave without graduating first?”“Psh,” she snorted. “That would be easy. I could just tell the Dean to give you a diploma. Problem solved. No need to wait for years just for senile old men to decide if you’re good enough to pass.”“I don’t want that, Eirian. I want to learn.” “I can teach you everything they know, and more.” “Yet you would only show me what you want me to see.”
“Fools! Do you honestly think that you could put one ever me?!” Eirian said with a haughty laugh. “On me, who have lived all these years without being commanded or controlled by any other being?! I have waited millennia just for this chance to come, and now that it’s here, do you really think I would just let insects like you foil my plans?” ‘What does she mean by that?’ thought Benette who held Dagon tightly in his arms. ‘Just who is she? And how old is she supposed to be?’“E-Eirian... you promised!” Dorin said as he crouched on the ground, trying to push himself
Johan gasped when Dagon fell unconscious in his arms, the remainder of a half eaten chocolate bar, falling to the ground. “What did you do to-” “Stop.” The force of command in Eirian’s voice made everyone’s body quiver. No one moved. No one could even breath. “You think a mere dragon child would be enough to stop me?” Eirian said with amused laughter. “Now listen to me,” she said, only then did the people around her take a gasp of breath. “No one tells me what to do. I give all the commands here, and you will simply o-” She was surprised when Johan suddenly struck his hand out towards her. She tried to jump back, but wasn’t quick enough. The fire mage quickly grabbed her mouth and covered it with a rough, calloused hand. “Got you, you bitch,” he snarled with Dagon dangling on his left arm, still sleeping. “You think your tricks can work on me? I’m used to dealing with double crossing bastards like you, and I’ve got experience!” He looked back as someone touched his shoul
Benette concentrated on the quivering body in front of him. He knew that as long as there was still warmth, as long as there was a spark of life in the cells within a body, that he could spread that life to create something new. When he was younger, he didn’t know how to heal, he simply knew that a living thing should live, and so wished it. It was so simple and obvious that he just knew that is should be. Just like how the lungs keep on breathing and the stomach digesting and the heart beating. Now that he is older and more knowledgeable of the parts and functions of a living organism
The first time Patrice Francoise Benette used his healing powers was when he was four years old.Coming from a strict, military family, his parents both demanded absolute obedience to rules and utmost respect to the highest authority, which was his father. As soon as he learned to talk, he was taught to call the Benette patriarch ‘Sir’, and told to act accordingly in a disciplined manner. Toys were limited to practical educational materials.
Chapter 112- I Admit Defeat ‘Is that the best you can do?’ Mordecai’s voice taunted Dorin in his mind. ‘I’ve already seen all your attacks, may it be wind, water, fire, earth, and lightning. So what else can you do?’ Dorin didn’t answer. He tried his best to chase and hit the medic, but none of his attacks can seem to touch him. He wanted to release everything, drown in the power of his lightning as before... ‘As before?’ His opponent was a powerful mage from the capital, He didn’t need to worry about holding back or a possible overkill. He can just have some fun again. ‘Again?’ He looked up at the sky and called to the darkness, calling pillars of thunder down upon Mordecai. Still, the attacks didn’t work. ‘Still not good enough.’ Mordecai laughed inside his head. ‘Useless. Should I proclaim myself as the winner now?’ Dorin’s eyes shone golden. He no longer cared what happened before or here after. ‘Not yet.’ he entered Mordecai’s mind. And he had a feeling as well that
