The smile was very infectious. Edward found himself smiling as well. Sebastian was quite the charmer when there wasn’t anyone else present.
“What do you think about our marriage?” he asked the prince.
It was best to be upfront and honest about the elephant in the room. He had also been wondering about Sebastian’s personal feelings on the subject since he had first met him. The prince had been impossible to read.
“I don’t like that neither of us were asked for permission,” Sebastian told him. “I didn’t get a choice, I had to get a government match on my 18th birthday and you don’t have a choice either; you can’t refuse to marry me. It’s not a fair situation for either of us.”
Edward saw his honesty as an opportunity to ask something he had been wanting to know.
“Are you even gay?”
Sebastian choked on his popsicle and Edward wasn’t sure how to interpret that reaction. He patted the prince on the back and waited for his reply.
“I think I’m gay. It’s hard to be sure when there’s no chance to explore my sexuality,” Sebastian admitted. “I’m not attracted to females, I do find males attractive so I’m almost sure I’m gay. What about you?”
Edward took a moment to arrange his thoughts.
“I have not decided yet. I haven’t had a chance to explore my sexuality either. I’ve been going to schools with the same group of people since I was 4, I’ve never had any interest in dating anyone. I was waiting until university to properly decide.”
Sebastian’s face was expressionless and Edward was curious to know what he was thinking. Maybe he would be able to tell in the future when they knew each other better.
“It’s strange that neither of us were ever asked if we were actually gay,” Edward added. “It shows that tradition here overrides our sexualities. I could be heterosexual with a girlfriend and it wouldn’t matter. It’s fortunate I don’t even know what sexuality I am yet, it makes things a little easier.”
That brought Sebastian’s face back to showing emotion.
“Tradition is extremely important to the royal family. We’re one of the very small number of European countries still with a royal family that can influence politics. This country is also still powerful in key areas. I think arranged marriages will continue until the end of the monarchy,” Sebastian said. “I’m sorry that I had to bring someone into this way of life. I just didn’t get a choice to refuse the arranged marriage.”
Edward felt that he should be telling Sebastian he shouldn’t be feeling guilty, but he couldn’t do that yet. He didn’t like the prince enough to say that.
“I haven’t quite accepted that my life will now be going along with everything someone tells me and if I find someone I love, I can’t be with them,” he said with stark honesty. “The summer holiday in France that I was looking forward to was cancelled so I can come here and get bullied by a royal advisor. I can’t even study what I want to at university. I bet there’s something very boring lined up for me to study.”
Sebastian looked very guilty now and bit his lip. Edward licked his popsicle and found the prince’s eyes were on his mouth. It felt awkward so he said the first thing his mind could come up with that fitted the situation.
“If we don’t get along with each other, it’s going to be noticeable in our public appearances. I know people like to declare themselves body language experts- they would notice quickly if we hate each other,” he added.
He was finding that he had a lot to say to Sebastian now that they were alone.
“I know that’s a potential problem,” Sebastian agreed. “I wanted to get to know you in a more natural way, but it hasn’t worked out so far. I am going to try my best to convince Mother to end the chaperoned meetings.”
Edward found it interesting that he referred to Queen Annelise as ‘Mother’ rather than something simpler like ‘Mum’.
“Would Queen Annelise agree to something as treacherous as two unmarried males meeting without a chaperone?” he asked with a snort.
Sebastian pulled a face.
“There’s a chance I could persuade her if I approach the subject correctly. She’s very stubborn about some things, especially traditions,” he said. “I’m glad it’s you that I’m marrying though.”
Edward paused with his popsicle halfway to his mouth. He wasn’t sure what Sebastian meant by that.
“Why is that?”
“You definitely aren’t interested in my fame or wealth, I can tell that you aren’t. I feel that other people would have been a pain and the secret of who my marriage partner is would be out by now.”
Edward could understand his thoughts there. He knew if one of the vain girls from his school had been picked instead, everyone would have known by the end of the day.
“When I go home, I mostly forget about everything related to this. I know I can’t do it forever, but I need to have something to keep me from dwelling on how bleak my future is,” he admitted.
His parents were doing their best to completely avoid the subject of his royal marriage and they had been spending the evenings playing board games.
“I am very sorry about all of this,” Sebastian replied quickly.
The prince patted him on the shoulder.
“It could be worse, you could be unattractive,” Edward said to lighten the tone a little.
He was almost done with reminding Sebastian how messed up his life was because of their marriage.
“How shallow,” Sebastian said with a smirk. “I could say the same about you.”
Sebastian thought he was attractive? Edward’s heart skipped a beat and he chose to ignore the feeling.
“Is Camilla against this marriage?” he asked.
Sebastian frowned and took a lick of his popsicle before answering.
“She is most definitely against me marrying you,” he explained. “I think she had someone else in mind and a hidden agenda. She has a daughter who was in the year below you at school, I think she hoped her daughter would be my marriage match. I think that’s why she doesn’t like you and I don’t think you should worry about it. I like you.”
Edward analysed all the information thoughtfully. It did seem right. Camilla’s attitude reeked of a hidden agenda as she was content with the arranged marriage happening, she just didn’t want him to be the one marrying the prince. Then he processed the last thing Sebastian had said.
The prince’s gaze was friendly and the look on his face was expectant, he was clearly waiting for a reply.
“I think you are all right too,” Edward said smoothly. “I don’t hate you either.”
Sebastian responded by poking his arm with his popsicle and Edward gasped at the sudden cold feeling.
“That’s for saying I’m just ‘all right’,” the prince retorted. “We have more time together today, should we do something to entertain ourselves or would you like to stay sitting here in the sun?”
“What activities are available?” Edward asked.
His mind jumped to the reasonable conclusion that Sebastian meant a sporting activity. He liked the idea of doing some exercise.
“We can play hide and seek,” Sebastian suggested. “The gardens here are huge. There’s plenty of space.”
Edward stared at him in surprise. He hadn’t been expecting the prince to want to play such a childish game.
“I would get lost very quickly,” he answered. “I’ve only been here twice and I get shown in and out by someone. I don’t even know the way back to the castle from here.”
Sebastian grinned at him.
“I’ll restrict it to this area then,” he said. “Playing hide and seek will make you feel more at home here.”
Edward sighed. It was evident that the prince was intent on playing hide and seek regardless of what he said and he didn’t really have any real objections to playing with the prince. He just didn’t want to be wandering around blindly with a high chance of getting lost.
“Will you be the one hiding?” he asked.
Sebastian nodded and pointed at the nearest tree a few metres away.
“You can stand there and I will clap when I’ve hidden myself. I won’t be going far and I will keep clapping so you can hear me. I won’t go any further than the pond over there, the gorse bushes over there or the archway that way,” he explained. “Are you happy with this arrangement?”
Edward was content with the set up now. Sebastian had allayed his worry about getting lost.
“I am,” he confirmed and strode over to the tree.
He turned around and he heard Sebastian walking away somewhere. He stayed where he was until he heard the sound of clapping. He never cheated at any game.
Edward turned back around and started walking forward in a straight line to keep it simple. The clapping became increasingly audible and he carried on that path. He looked around carefully and saw the prince. Sebastian was ducked behind a bush nearby with the top of his head visible. It was a terrible hiding place.
“You found me,” he said with a sheepish smile.
Edward held his hand out to him and pulled him up.
“That wasn’t a good hiding place,” he commented.
“I’ll make it harder next time,” the prince promised. “I’ll continue hiding. It’s easier for you to just find me today. We can switch next time you come.”
Edward returned to the tree and repeated the same procedure. This time Sebastian was hiding in an equally bad hiding place. He had hidden against a wall with only half of his body hidden by vines.
“I found you,” Edward said with a sigh. “Are you even trying to hide?”
Sebastian shrugged and grinned at him.
“For all you know, this is the first time I’ve ever played hide and seek and I might not know the proper etiquette.”
Edward was doubtful at first and then he reconsidered. There was probably some truth in his words. Sebastian probably hadn’t played many games in his childhood that required multiple people due to his royal position.
“You need to hide properly,” he told him. “Please try to find somewhere better to hide this round.”
“Yes, Edward,” the prince replied with a pout.
Edward walked off back to the tree and wondered if Sebastian really would find a decent hiding place. The area they were in was full of decent places to hide.
This time he didn’t find him immediately despite the clapping and became confused. The clapping was loudest at the strawberry plants, but Sebastian wasn’t ducked down behind them. Then his eyes noticed something amiss and realised where the prince was.
“You did better this time,” he observed.
Sebastian was hiding in the strawberry plants, his body was mostly covered by the strawberries. Edward offered his hand and helped Sebastian stand up without uprooting the plants.
“Would you like a strawberry?” the prince asked and produced two from his pocket. “I ate some whilst I was waiting for you to find me.”
Edward’s stomach rumbled and his mind went to the cake his father was eating right at that moment.
“Yes, please,” he said.
Sebastian held one above his mouth.
“Open up.”
Edward opened his mouth after a moment’s pause. Sebastian touched his chin with a soft touch and dropped the strawberry into his mouth. Being touched by the prince was a strange experience.
“It’s good,” he agreed after finishing the strawberry. “Will the gardeners notice some are gone?”
“They will know it’s me and I’m the prince,” he said with a grin. “Have you enjoyed our meeting today?”
Edward considered his answer carefully. He had come to the castle expecting mental torture and it turned out to be the very opposite. He had enjoyed meeting Sebastian this time.
“I have,” he replied honestly.
Sebastian reached for his hand again and gave it a gentle kiss.
“I’m glad to hear that.”
Edward drew his hand back in surprise. This kiss felt different to the other hand kiss, this one felt more intimate. He didn’t quite know how to react to it. “It’s nice to see you not acting like a sulky teenager,” he commented to lighten the tone. Sebastian fluffed his blond hair and laughed loudly. “That is certainly one way to say it. I am hoping the act won’t be necessary anymore.” Edward didn’t want to see Sebastian act like a sulky teenager again either. It would be even more annoying to see the act now that he knew Sebastian was actually a comfortable person to be around. “I feel the same way.” Sebastian frowned suddenly and Edward heard the sound of footsteps approaching them. He turned to see Ryan approaching them and knew it was time to leave. This time he wasn’t as happy to leave. Getting to leave had been the highlight of his previous visit. “Our time together has come to an end,” Sebastian said softly. “I would wal
Edward was taken aback by that announcement. It was quite a thing to promise. The obvious benefit of that statement was that it visibly impressed his parents. His father looked significantly less foreboding as he stepped forward and laid his hand on Sebastian’s shoulder.“Your majesty, you’d better keep to that,” he said sternly.“I would say that we should hope there’s never a situation where Edward needs saving,” Lady Grey spoke up.The prince smiled dazzlingly and Edward wanted to hide his face. That smile was lethal.“Let’s have some afternoon tea,” he said. “I’ve set it up in the garden.”This time the castle appeared less cold and foreboding as they walked through the hallways and out into the gardens. By now Edward knew the route and was more inclined to look around at the interior instead of focusing on following Sebastian. All the furnishings looked like th
“The prince is such a nice young man,” Lady Grey commented on the journey home.Edward waited for his father’s response. At the castle he had appeared more open to accepting Sebastian as his future son-in-law. Now he would find out if that was true or if it had been an act.“He was pleasant this time and seemed to have our son’s interests at heart,” was his father’s reply. That didn’t quite sound like approval. It was a very neutral answer. Given what he had said about Sebastian in the past, it was quite an improvement.“You can just say that you like him,” his mother sighed. “He was much better this time in every way. I have become fond of him.”“You’re very easily swayed,” Lord Grey pointed out with a judging glance at her.He turned the car onto the motorway and Edward knew he wouldn’t respond to anything for a while. His father was always very
Sebastian was caught off guard by the question. It caused him to realise that he hadn’t been clear about his feelings. To Edward he must have seemed like a playboy who constantly flirted and threw out pick up lines. He cleared his throat. “I know things haven’t been clear cut between us and there’s been plenty of room for misunderstandings,” he said. “I do like you and that’s not just because of the arranged marriage.” Edward’s face was hard to read again, but he continued on regardless. “I don’t just mean as a friend before you assume that. I mean that I like you in a romantic way, I want to date you.” That should make his intentions clear enough to Edward. He really should have chucked Camilla out from the very beginning to avoid the roadblocks she had caused in their relationship. His future husband blinked and then his cheeks flushed pink. It was a very cute sight to see. Sebastian wanted to poke his cheeks, but he knew it wasn’t t
It was a soft and gentle kiss. Sebastian’s brain short circuited and all he could do was press against Edward’s lips. Some part of his brain kicked in to tell him to draw back to see if Edward was liking the kiss. Edward looked as blank as he did, but he didn’t look like he had hated the kiss. That was good. He didn’t want Edward to regret anything and he didn’t want to make Edward unhappy either. “...Can we talk about some things?” Edward asked hesitantly. Sebastian was keen to kiss him again, but he knew there were some important things to talk about between them. Edward’s feelings towards him must have changed if he had been willing to kiss him. The crown prince led him over to the bench in the centre of the rose garden. It felt proper to have the conversation sitting down. “I’m surprised you wanted to kiss me,” he commented to begin the conversation. Edward’s face was still red and he looked positively adora
“What did you do today?” Lady Grey asked when he arrived at home.Edward had already planned his act on the car journey home. He was not ready to tell his parents about his feelings for Sebastian. It would lead to too many questions he wasn’t ready to answer yet.“We had afternoon tea and took a walk around the gardens. We went to some of the areas I haven’t seen before. I’ve got some ideas for Dad to use,” he answered in what he hoped was a casual tone.It wasn’t like he could say that they had confessed to each other and kissed each other. That was something he wanted to keep a secret.“Your hair looks different,” his mother observed sharply. “It was very tidy when you left. Did you get your hair stuck in a bush?”It seemed like he couldn’t get anything past his mother. That fact had never changed and probably never would.“I did. It was rather embarrassing
It was a Grey family tradition to agree on a prize for the winner of board game evenings. When he was younger Edward would make his parents agree to do his homework or let him off tidying his room. Now he just asked for cake. “If I win, the person with the least money has to buy me a bag of mint humbugs,” Lord Grey said immediately as he usually did. “I think the worst loser has to alphabetise the library,” Lady Grey suggested. “The books are out of order again.” “If I win, you all owe me a cupcake,” Edward announced. These evening Monopoly sessions had allowed him to have a cupboard in the kitchen dedicated to cake. He was keen to add to it today. He was fortunate to have a lifestyle and metabolism that allowed him not to worry about eating a lot of cake. The three of them looked at Sebastian who had been watching them announce their pledges with keen interest. “If I win, Edward owes me a favour,” he paused for emphasis. “For life.”
Edward smiled widely when he heard the question. Sebastian was right, they had messily snogged in the grass and were going to marry, yet neither of them had asked the other out.“I’ll go out with you,” he said. “I’ll let you be my boyfriend.”Sebastian responded with a quick kiss on the lips.“Thank you for letting me be your boyfriend.”Edward linked hands with his new boyfriend and looked up at the sky. Everything was perfect today. The sun was shining, there wasn’t a cloud to be seen and he had gained a boyfriend who he would later marry. Then he remembered that this was the last time they would be in a free setting like this. Their meetings would be moving to the palace.“What’s the palace like?” he asked.“It’s very big and easy to get lost in. It’s also hard to do anything without someone interrupting. There’s more staff there than he
Edward reached out and moved a stray hair on Sebastian's head back into place and looked around them in contentment. It was now June and the sun was shining in the sky. It felt everything had aligned for the perfect wedding. The gardens looked beautiful in the sunlight and it brought back his happy memories of frolicking around in the gardens with Sebastian during their courting days.“Let’s get married,” he said. They walked down the aisle slowly. The aisle was one of the stone pathways in the garden that had been lined with arches of flowers. Their guests were sitting on chairs on either side of the archways and there were not many of them.On Edward’s side there were his parents and his bodyguards. Sebastian’s side consisted of royal staff and the prime minister as he didn’t have any relations that would be invited to the wedding. They reached the archbishop as the music stopped. Unlike the heavy and tense mood in the cathedral, the mood was light in the gardens and Edward didn’t fe
Edward tried to hide his shock. He had never expected this to be Sebastian’s surprise for him.It added up with the clues he had been given. Abolishing the marriage match tradition was a major change as the tradition was so synonymous with Albion. It was no wonder Sebastian had needed to negotiate with the prime minister.“It’s a tradition that has become less necessary over the years,” Sebastian said. “After meeting my fiancé, I came to realise that the marriage tradition only benefits the royal family and it’s wholly unfair for the matched person to never have a say in the marriage.”Edward kept his face in check as there were cameras filming him at the moment. He wanted to smile widely, but he restrained himself. He could express his gratitude later on in private.“I understand that it is a tradition that has been going on for a long time and the country is proud of its traditions, but I think this
Their second holiday together considerably had less problems than the first one. Edward didn’t wear out Sebastian by dragging him out on exhausting hikes, he didn’t have enough stamina for a hike himself.Instead of long hikes, they went on short walks and watched the sunset every afternoon. It was a very serene holiday. They also didn’t get married in secret again. The days slowly drifted by and then it was their last night. Edward took the bowl of popcorn out of the microwave and carried it to the living room where Sebastian was waiting on the sofa.“What are we watching tonight?” Edward asked and sat down with the bowl of popcorn.Sebastian took a piece before answering.“I found this badly reviewed film about a prince marrying a normal citizen. It’s considered to be bad in a legendary way. I thought it would be fun for us to watch as we know how royal things work.”“It will als
The next week for Edward was mostly about his physiotherapy sessions in the morning and resting for the rest of the day.His bullet wound was healing up well and the royal doctor had told him that the scar would heal well.He enjoyed his peaceful time, but he was also aware that it was like living in a bubble. He had no idea what was going on outside of the palace. For all he knew the media was trashing the royal family. The arrests of the two princes would not have been good PR for the royal family. He wanted to know what was happening outside of the palace gates. Despite his desire to know, he was deliberately avoiding looking up anything on the internet in case his name was involved.Bernadette walked past the sitting room and he sprang up. She always had answers to all PR related questions.“You want to know about how the royal family is doing in the news?” she asked after he told her his troubles. “But you’re worried about seeing articles about yourself so you’re avoiding taking a
Edward stared at Sebastian in surprise. He hadn’t been expecting this at all.“Why are you giving me this choice?” he questioned.“I drew you into a dangerous and unfair world when I went to the government office to get my match last year,” Sebastian told him. “You’ve been threatened and have received serious injuries because of your association with me. I can’t sit here and let it happen again. You didn’t have a choice last year, but I will give you one now.”The silence between them was long.Edward didn’t know how to answer the question. When he had first been forced into the complicated world of the royal family, he would have loved to have a chance to step away from it. Now that he was much more deeply involved, he wasn’t as willing to leave. He appreciated that Sebastian wanted to give him the choice now. If the situation was reversed, he would have done the same for Sebastian. If he stepped away from royal matters now, he would be leaving Sebastian to steer through any future pr
Edward cleared his throat and managed to speak.“...Don’t cry…”He tried to move his hand and found that there was an IV in his arm that was preventing him from moving his hand without feeling pain.“I’ll stop in a moment,” Sebastian promised him. “I need to tell the doctors that you’ve woken up.”Sebastian pressed the button above his bed and Edward assessed the situation from what he could see. He was hooked up to a heart monitor, there was an IV in his arm and another tube that he was unsure about. He must be in intensive care. That made sense, he had been shot after all.A team of doctors quickly arrived and took control of the situation. Edward lost sight of Sebastian and was poked and prodded by the doctors and was asked a lot of questions that he did his best to answer with his croaky voice.Eventually the examination came to an end and Sebastian was able to sit at his
Sebastian watched in horror as the bullet hit Edward’s chest and his prone body sank against him. Sebastian caught him immediately and laid him on the ground with care. He didn’t care who was watching anymore. He heard lots of shouts and screams that sounded like they were coming from far away. Edward’s eyes were closed and his breathing was laboured. Sebastian feared the worst.Their happiness couldn’t end on their wedding day.Someone in a paramedic uniform moved him gently to the side and a group of paramedics formed a circle around Edward. Sebastian could only stand and watch as Edward was moved to a stretcher and was rushed back up the aisle. This wasn’t how their wedding day was supposed to go.“I’ll take you to the hospital,” a voice at his side said.Sebastian turned to see Bernadette next to him. She always knew what to do so he let her lead him out of the cathedral. There were still crowds of people outside who were now panicking, likely due to the sound of the shot and the s
Edward smiled at his future husband and gave him a light kiss. Sebastian responded quickly.“Did you want to stay for a little longer?” Sebastian asked.“I do want to look like I have had some sleep,” Edward replied. “There’s only so much that makeup can cover up.”He got off the bed and shared a brief kiss with Sebastian. It was tempting to stay, but he knew they could be more open about their relationship after the wedding. He walked back through the secret passageway. Now that he had gone through it so many times, he didn’t pay much attention to what direction he was following. He had always had a rough idea of where he was. Edward came to a stop when he picked up the sounds of someone talking. It was an odd time for people to still be up talking. He put his ear to the wall in an effort to pick something up. It worked to some degree, he was able to hear some words.“....Cathedral… sniper… vows… fire escape… assassination…”Edward frowned. The voice sounded like Vincent. It made sen
Sebastian realised that it would be a good time to let go of Edward. There were plenty of people around and if they remained hugging, it would look suspicious.“I now feel that my present to you isn’t going to live up to the same standard,” he said and let go of him.He took a look at the photo frame again and knew that he could find a good place for it. Christmas was often considered a time for families to gather and knowing that this was his first Christmas without his mother had felt sad.It appeared that Edward had been able to perceive that and had decided to give him a family photo of his new family. It was a perfect present. He put the photo frame down carefully and passed over his present to Edward. It was the camera lens Edward had asked for.“It is still a good present,” Edward told him. “It was what I wanted.”The rest of Christmas day went without any issues. Vincent and Conrad didn&rsquo
