Edward drew his hand back in surprise. This kiss felt different to the other hand kiss, this one felt more intimate. He didn’t quite know how to react to it.
“It’s nice to see you not acting like a sulky teenager,” he commented to lighten the tone.
Sebastian fluffed his blond hair and laughed loudly.
“That is certainly one way to say it. I am hoping the act won’t be necessary anymore.”
Edward didn’t want to see Sebastian act like a sulky teenager again either. It would be even more annoying to see the act now that he knew Sebastian was actually a comfortable person to be around.
“I feel the same way.”
Sebastian frowned suddenly and Edward heard the sound of footsteps approaching them. He turned to see Ryan approaching them and knew it was time to leave. This time he wasn’t as happy to leave. Getting to leave had been the highlight of his previous visit.
“Our time together has come to an end,” Sebastian said softly. “I would walk you out, but apparently your father is very scary when he doesn’t like people and I do deserve a punch for my past behaviour.”
“Edward Grey, I have to walk you back,” Ryan called out as he came to a stop by them. “Prince Sebastian, say goodbye.”
“Good bye, Edward,” the prince said with a bow. “I will see you next time.”
“I look forward to it,” Edward said. “Good bye.”
He walked back through the gardens with Ryan. Sebastian’s secretary was a much nicer person to walk with than Camilla. His gaze wasn’t disdainful and he was willing to answer his questions about the castle.
His father was waiting in the entranceway looking more content than he had looked the previous time. Edward could only guess that the cake in the castle kitchen had been good.
“I will see you two again at some point,” Ryan said with a wide smile. “The situation will get easier to deal with as time goes by, but other things will be harder to bear the more you learn.”
Edward knew Ryan was right. The more meetings he had with the prince, the closer they would become, but at the same time the wedding date would slip closer and the more his future would become set in stone. He wouldn’t be a normal person by the end of the summer, he would be a future member of the royal family and everyone in Albion would know his name and face.
“Thank you,” Edward said to him. “I hope to see you again.”
There was a lighter air in the car this time. He had enjoyed his time with the prince and his father was in a much better mood. However there were also some things to put to the back of his mind like Sebastian’s glances at him and the hand kisses. He didn’t want to think about those things, it would make things confusing. He wasn’t sure he wanted to consider that the prince might like him.
“Was it bearable this time?” his father asked when they got onto a quieter road. “That blonde woman wasn’t there this time to be mean.”
“It was… fun,” Edward admitted. “The prince was kind. He said that Camilla was meaner to me when he was nice to me so he elected to stay silent for our past meetings.”
He could tell his father wasn’t impressed by the sound he made. Lord Grey had a way of making his opinions known without actually saying anything.
“He could just tell her to go away,” his father said.
“I don’t think he directly employs her,” Edward pointed out. “There are some things that are out of his control.”
“There’s other things he can do,” Lord Grey said sternly. “Anyway, let’s stop talking about things like this. We’re just a normal father and son and have no royal connections.”
They were careful to not talk about anything related to the royal family for the rest of the journey. Edward did want to go over things Sebastian had said in his mind as the prince had told him a lot of things, but he wanted to be alone when he did that.

Sebastian poured out a careful measure of tea into his teacup and added an equally carefully measured amount of milk. He stirred it and let it sit to cool down. He didn’t like his tea too hot as it burned the roof of his mouth.
He surveyed his outdoor surroundings. He had moved from the area where he had met Edward earlier, now he was on the patio closer to the castle. The view from this area was unparalleled and it helped him think.
The government match system really did work. He was very into Edward Grey. Sebastian knew he liked him a lot now. Removing Camilla from the equation and persuading Ryan to leave them in peace had been a very good idea. Ryan had put up a minor fight, but he had overruled him.
Did Edward like him in the same way?
His future husband had been difficult to read. Sebastian had sensed that he had loosened up a lot after they had a serious talk about the situation. Edward still seemed a little uneasy in his presence.
What he could tell was that Edward wasn’t in love with him.
At least it seemed like they could be good friends. There was that to hope for. If Edward never returned his feelings, they would at least stay friends. That was important as they would be living together in the future.
There were chances for him to get closer to him in the summer months. Things would be more serious in September when arrangements became concrete and unable to be changed and the public announcement of their wedding would be imminent.
Sebastian thought about when he had fed Edward the strawberry. He had greatly enjoyed that moment. It was lucky that he didn’t blush easily otherwise Edward would have noticed. He didn’t want to repulse Edward with his feelings.
He would have to seduce him slowly.

Another royal envelope arrived at the Grey household whilst the three of them were sitting at the breakfast table the following morning. Edward opened it as it was addressed to him and knew it was different to the previous two immediately. It contained a letter this time instead of just a card.
This letter was handwritten and the handwriting showed it had been written by a different person this time. He knew who had written the letter when he read the first line.
“Dear Edward, I would like to invite you to the castle again. We had fun last time and I was sad to see you leave. You can stay for longer this time and I will be happy to meet Lord and Lady Grey this time. Mother has agreed that we no longer need to have a chaperone. I look forward to meeting you again. Yours sincerely, Prince Sebastian Hallowswift,” Edward read aloud.
The three of them exchanged looks.
“This is the first time we’ve all been invited,” Lord Grey observed. “The prince does know his stuff. I might take back my first opinion of him. After I’ve met him properly of course. The royals and anyone who works for that family has two faces.”
“I look forward to meeting him without Camilla Roberts,” Lady Grey said. “I’m still worried about her popping up somewhere. Anyone who doesn’t like my son isn’t someone I can like myself.”
“Sebastian said that she had been removed from anything related to our marriage,” Edward said absent mindedly.
For some reason Sebastian had ended his letter with kisses. He hadn’t mentioned that to his parents as he didn’t feel they would be amused by that.
The prince was confusing to evaluate. Sebastian was unhappy with the arranged marriage yet he seemed to be very keen to get close to him. It didn’t feel like Sebastian wanted to be his friend or even his best friend, it was like Sebastian wanted to be his boyfriend.
Those hand kisses were a clue and there was the look Sebastian had given him when he had licked the popsicle. There was the random strawberry feeding and the lip touch as well. He had ended up thinking about those things despite his desire to avoid remembering them.
There was of course the possibility that he had completely misread all of those signals and he was overthinking everything.
One thing that Edward prided himself on apart from his athleticism was his ability to read body language and intent. It did help on the playing field to work out if his opponent was feinting or really was going for a shot. His predictions were normally right.
Now his senses were telling him that Sebastian was very interested in him.
At least one of them would enjoy the arranged marriage.
He was still undecided about how he felt about Sebastian. The prince had only been sociable for one out of three meetings after all. There was also his own distaste for the arranged marriage clouding his opinion.
If Sebastian’s choice at the government office had been a little different, he would be having a very nice sunny holiday in France right now without much to worry about. All he would be worrying about was which university would accept him and he would be able to study what he wanted in the future.
He could be friends with the prince, but he didn’t know if he could ever feel anything more for him. The prince was undeniably attractive and charismatic, but he wasn’t feeling anything for him yet.
Edward still wasn’t sure if he was even gay himself. If he was straight, he wasn’t going to like this marriage no matter how much Sebastian liked him.
“Are you on first name terms now?” his mother asked curiously.
Edward blinked and returned to reality. The breakfast table wasn’t a good place to have deep thoughts. He closed the letter before replying.
“Yes, he said I didn’t need to bother with his title. I think that only works in private. If I do it elsewhere, there will probably be someone to tell me off.”
“Be careful. I don’t want you to get told off anymore than you need to,” Lady Grey said. “I’m glad you two get along better though. Do you think you could be happy with him?”
Edward put the letter back in the envelope and picked up his toast again.
“It’s too early to tell that,” he said. “I prefer to not think about the future at the moment.”
“Let’s just get our next meeting at the castle out the way,” his father agreed.
***
The three of them arrived at the castle with time to spare before the time stated on the letter. It had been hard for Edward to find a reason not to let his parents read the letter themselves. He would have to tell Sebastian not to add kisses to any future letters.
He stepped out of the car first and saw a figure coming out of the castle to greet him. He was surprised when he saw that Sebastian was coming out to meet them himself.
The prince came to a stop in front of him and bowed. Clearly he wasn’t willing to do a hand kiss in front of his parents.
“Edward Grey,” he said politely. “I’m happy to see you again.”
The prince’s eyes changed when his parents came to stand next to him. He looked much more formal and serious.
“Lord and Lady Grey, it’s a pleasure to welcome you two here,” Sebastian said. “I hope you enjoy your visit here today.”
“It’s nice to meet you again under different circumstances,” Lord Grey replied. “I hope you will treat my son well.”
Edward was surprised when Sebastian took hold of his hand in front of his parents.
“I will look after Edward with my life,” he vowed.
Edward was taken aback by that announcement. It was quite a thing to promise. The obvious benefit of that statement was that it visibly impressed his parents. His father looked significantly less foreboding as he stepped forward and laid his hand on Sebastian’s shoulder.“Your majesty, you’d better keep to that,” he said sternly.“I would say that we should hope there’s never a situation where Edward needs saving,” Lady Grey spoke up.The prince smiled dazzlingly and Edward wanted to hide his face. That smile was lethal.“Let’s have some afternoon tea,” he said. “I’ve set it up in the garden.”This time the castle appeared less cold and foreboding as they walked through the hallways and out into the gardens. By now Edward knew the route and was more inclined to look around at the interior instead of focusing on following Sebastian. All the furnishings looked like th
“The prince is such a nice young man,” Lady Grey commented on the journey home.Edward waited for his father’s response. At the castle he had appeared more open to accepting Sebastian as his future son-in-law. Now he would find out if that was true or if it had been an act.“He was pleasant this time and seemed to have our son’s interests at heart,” was his father’s reply. That didn’t quite sound like approval. It was a very neutral answer. Given what he had said about Sebastian in the past, it was quite an improvement.“You can just say that you like him,” his mother sighed. “He was much better this time in every way. I have become fond of him.”“You’re very easily swayed,” Lord Grey pointed out with a judging glance at her.He turned the car onto the motorway and Edward knew he wouldn’t respond to anything for a while. His father was always very
Sebastian was caught off guard by the question. It caused him to realise that he hadn’t been clear about his feelings. To Edward he must have seemed like a playboy who constantly flirted and threw out pick up lines. He cleared his throat. “I know things haven’t been clear cut between us and there’s been plenty of room for misunderstandings,” he said. “I do like you and that’s not just because of the arranged marriage.” Edward’s face was hard to read again, but he continued on regardless. “I don’t just mean as a friend before you assume that. I mean that I like you in a romantic way, I want to date you.” That should make his intentions clear enough to Edward. He really should have chucked Camilla out from the very beginning to avoid the roadblocks she had caused in their relationship. His future husband blinked and then his cheeks flushed pink. It was a very cute sight to see. Sebastian wanted to poke his cheeks, but he knew it wasn’t t
It was a soft and gentle kiss. Sebastian’s brain short circuited and all he could do was press against Edward’s lips. Some part of his brain kicked in to tell him to draw back to see if Edward was liking the kiss. Edward looked as blank as he did, but he didn’t look like he had hated the kiss. That was good. He didn’t want Edward to regret anything and he didn’t want to make Edward unhappy either. “...Can we talk about some things?” Edward asked hesitantly. Sebastian was keen to kiss him again, but he knew there were some important things to talk about between them. Edward’s feelings towards him must have changed if he had been willing to kiss him. The crown prince led him over to the bench in the centre of the rose garden. It felt proper to have the conversation sitting down. “I’m surprised you wanted to kiss me,” he commented to begin the conversation. Edward’s face was still red and he looked positively adora
“What did you do today?” Lady Grey asked when he arrived at home.Edward had already planned his act on the car journey home. He was not ready to tell his parents about his feelings for Sebastian. It would lead to too many questions he wasn’t ready to answer yet.“We had afternoon tea and took a walk around the gardens. We went to some of the areas I haven’t seen before. I’ve got some ideas for Dad to use,” he answered in what he hoped was a casual tone.It wasn’t like he could say that they had confessed to each other and kissed each other. That was something he wanted to keep a secret.“Your hair looks different,” his mother observed sharply. “It was very tidy when you left. Did you get your hair stuck in a bush?”It seemed like he couldn’t get anything past his mother. That fact had never changed and probably never would.“I did. It was rather embarrassing
It was a Grey family tradition to agree on a prize for the winner of board game evenings. When he was younger Edward would make his parents agree to do his homework or let him off tidying his room. Now he just asked for cake. “If I win, the person with the least money has to buy me a bag of mint humbugs,” Lord Grey said immediately as he usually did. “I think the worst loser has to alphabetise the library,” Lady Grey suggested. “The books are out of order again.” “If I win, you all owe me a cupcake,” Edward announced. These evening Monopoly sessions had allowed him to have a cupboard in the kitchen dedicated to cake. He was keen to add to it today. He was fortunate to have a lifestyle and metabolism that allowed him not to worry about eating a lot of cake. The three of them looked at Sebastian who had been watching them announce their pledges with keen interest. “If I win, Edward owes me a favour,” he paused for emphasis. “For life.”
Edward smiled widely when he heard the question. Sebastian was right, they had messily snogged in the grass and were going to marry, yet neither of them had asked the other out.“I’ll go out with you,” he said. “I’ll let you be my boyfriend.”Sebastian responded with a quick kiss on the lips.“Thank you for letting me be your boyfriend.”Edward linked hands with his new boyfriend and looked up at the sky. Everything was perfect today. The sun was shining, there wasn’t a cloud to be seen and he had gained a boyfriend who he would later marry. Then he remembered that this was the last time they would be in a free setting like this. Their meetings would be moving to the palace.“What’s the palace like?” he asked.“It’s very big and easy to get lost in. It’s also hard to do anything without someone interrupting. There’s more staff there than he
The building was very grand on every scale and living in a mansion hadn’t prepared him for it. Unlike the castle, the palace was crawling with security. Standing outside the entrance were two guards with visible guns. Edward found himself wondering how Sebastian had managed to sneak out unnoticed.“Someone is coming towards us,” his father whispered to him.Edward stood up straight and self consciously adjusted his suit. The invitation had stated formal dress so he was wearing his best suit that had been a present for his 18th birthday. He felt like he was going to be sick if the person approaching them turned out to be Camilla. The person became more visible and he saw it wasn’t Camilla. It was a much older grey haired woman wearing a brown suit and glasses on a chain.“Good afternoon, Lord Grey and Edward Grey. The prince is waiting for you in the second sitting room,” she said. “My name is Bernadette Berkley and I am the lead royal advisor in this operation. It is nice to meet you t
Edward reached out and moved a stray hair on Sebastian's head back into place and looked around them in contentment. It was now June and the sun was shining in the sky. It felt everything had aligned for the perfect wedding. The gardens looked beautiful in the sunlight and it brought back his happy memories of frolicking around in the gardens with Sebastian during their courting days.“Let’s get married,” he said. They walked down the aisle slowly. The aisle was one of the stone pathways in the garden that had been lined with arches of flowers. Their guests were sitting on chairs on either side of the archways and there were not many of them.On Edward’s side there were his parents and his bodyguards. Sebastian’s side consisted of royal staff and the prime minister as he didn’t have any relations that would be invited to the wedding. They reached the archbishop as the music stopped. Unlike the heavy and tense mood in the cathedral, the mood was light in the gardens and Edward didn’t fe
Edward tried to hide his shock. He had never expected this to be Sebastian’s surprise for him.It added up with the clues he had been given. Abolishing the marriage match tradition was a major change as the tradition was so synonymous with Albion. It was no wonder Sebastian had needed to negotiate with the prime minister.“It’s a tradition that has become less necessary over the years,” Sebastian said. “After meeting my fiancé, I came to realise that the marriage tradition only benefits the royal family and it’s wholly unfair for the matched person to never have a say in the marriage.”Edward kept his face in check as there were cameras filming him at the moment. He wanted to smile widely, but he restrained himself. He could express his gratitude later on in private.“I understand that it is a tradition that has been going on for a long time and the country is proud of its traditions, but I think this
Their second holiday together considerably had less problems than the first one. Edward didn’t wear out Sebastian by dragging him out on exhausting hikes, he didn’t have enough stamina for a hike himself.Instead of long hikes, they went on short walks and watched the sunset every afternoon. It was a very serene holiday. They also didn’t get married in secret again. The days slowly drifted by and then it was their last night. Edward took the bowl of popcorn out of the microwave and carried it to the living room where Sebastian was waiting on the sofa.“What are we watching tonight?” Edward asked and sat down with the bowl of popcorn.Sebastian took a piece before answering.“I found this badly reviewed film about a prince marrying a normal citizen. It’s considered to be bad in a legendary way. I thought it would be fun for us to watch as we know how royal things work.”“It will als
The next week for Edward was mostly about his physiotherapy sessions in the morning and resting for the rest of the day.His bullet wound was healing up well and the royal doctor had told him that the scar would heal well.He enjoyed his peaceful time, but he was also aware that it was like living in a bubble. He had no idea what was going on outside of the palace. For all he knew the media was trashing the royal family. The arrests of the two princes would not have been good PR for the royal family. He wanted to know what was happening outside of the palace gates. Despite his desire to know, he was deliberately avoiding looking up anything on the internet in case his name was involved.Bernadette walked past the sitting room and he sprang up. She always had answers to all PR related questions.“You want to know about how the royal family is doing in the news?” she asked after he told her his troubles. “But you’re worried about seeing articles about yourself so you’re avoiding taking a
Edward stared at Sebastian in surprise. He hadn’t been expecting this at all.“Why are you giving me this choice?” he questioned.“I drew you into a dangerous and unfair world when I went to the government office to get my match last year,” Sebastian told him. “You’ve been threatened and have received serious injuries because of your association with me. I can’t sit here and let it happen again. You didn’t have a choice last year, but I will give you one now.”The silence between them was long.Edward didn’t know how to answer the question. When he had first been forced into the complicated world of the royal family, he would have loved to have a chance to step away from it. Now that he was much more deeply involved, he wasn’t as willing to leave. He appreciated that Sebastian wanted to give him the choice now. If the situation was reversed, he would have done the same for Sebastian. If he stepped away from royal matters now, he would be leaving Sebastian to steer through any future pr
Edward cleared his throat and managed to speak.“...Don’t cry…”He tried to move his hand and found that there was an IV in his arm that was preventing him from moving his hand without feeling pain.“I’ll stop in a moment,” Sebastian promised him. “I need to tell the doctors that you’ve woken up.”Sebastian pressed the button above his bed and Edward assessed the situation from what he could see. He was hooked up to a heart monitor, there was an IV in his arm and another tube that he was unsure about. He must be in intensive care. That made sense, he had been shot after all.A team of doctors quickly arrived and took control of the situation. Edward lost sight of Sebastian and was poked and prodded by the doctors and was asked a lot of questions that he did his best to answer with his croaky voice.Eventually the examination came to an end and Sebastian was able to sit at his
Sebastian watched in horror as the bullet hit Edward’s chest and his prone body sank against him. Sebastian caught him immediately and laid him on the ground with care. He didn’t care who was watching anymore. He heard lots of shouts and screams that sounded like they were coming from far away. Edward’s eyes were closed and his breathing was laboured. Sebastian feared the worst.Their happiness couldn’t end on their wedding day.Someone in a paramedic uniform moved him gently to the side and a group of paramedics formed a circle around Edward. Sebastian could only stand and watch as Edward was moved to a stretcher and was rushed back up the aisle. This wasn’t how their wedding day was supposed to go.“I’ll take you to the hospital,” a voice at his side said.Sebastian turned to see Bernadette next to him. She always knew what to do so he let her lead him out of the cathedral. There were still crowds of people outside who were now panicking, likely due to the sound of the shot and the s
Edward smiled at his future husband and gave him a light kiss. Sebastian responded quickly.“Did you want to stay for a little longer?” Sebastian asked.“I do want to look like I have had some sleep,” Edward replied. “There’s only so much that makeup can cover up.”He got off the bed and shared a brief kiss with Sebastian. It was tempting to stay, but he knew they could be more open about their relationship after the wedding. He walked back through the secret passageway. Now that he had gone through it so many times, he didn’t pay much attention to what direction he was following. He had always had a rough idea of where he was. Edward came to a stop when he picked up the sounds of someone talking. It was an odd time for people to still be up talking. He put his ear to the wall in an effort to pick something up. It worked to some degree, he was able to hear some words.“....Cathedral… sniper… vows… fire escape… assassination…”Edward frowned. The voice sounded like Vincent. It made sen
Sebastian realised that it would be a good time to let go of Edward. There were plenty of people around and if they remained hugging, it would look suspicious.“I now feel that my present to you isn’t going to live up to the same standard,” he said and let go of him.He took a look at the photo frame again and knew that he could find a good place for it. Christmas was often considered a time for families to gather and knowing that this was his first Christmas without his mother had felt sad.It appeared that Edward had been able to perceive that and had decided to give him a family photo of his new family. It was a perfect present. He put the photo frame down carefully and passed over his present to Edward. It was the camera lens Edward had asked for.“It is still a good present,” Edward told him. “It was what I wanted.”The rest of Christmas day went without any issues. Vincent and Conrad didn&rsquo
