The silence of the dark night was disturbed by the rustling of leaves. A long, winding road cut through the forest with the large trees surrounding the area. While the large moon shone brightly in the sky, its light was blocked by the trees which threw dark shadows over the road. There was no other sound, not even the cries of cicadas. Not a soul was in sight at the desolated road since it was past midnight. The world slept on, unaware of what was about to happen at that lonely road.
Through the darkness, a pair of headlights lit up as a car sped through the forest. Inside the car were three people. A middle aged couple were at the front seat while a small hooded figure was sitting at the back. The bespectacled man in his forties looked worried as sweat glistened on his forehead. His wife, a dark haired beauty with blue eyes, was glancing at the rearview mirror every minute to ensure they were not being followed. The hooded figure sat in silence but the fear emitting from her was eminent.
As if sensing her fear, the older woman said in a gentle tone, “Don’t worry! We won’t let them find you!”
She turned to her husband and added, “Charles, how much further?”
“We’re almost there!” Charles exclaimed. “As soon as we get there, we can set her free Sheila!”
Sheila bit her lip, unsure of what was going to happen. They had made it this far but her heart was unsettled. If they failed that night, then calamity would befall the country and it would be impossible to stop it.
A cold hand touched her cheek. Startled, she turned around to see the hooded figure was now trying to console her. Sheila’s was aching. They had done so much wrong to her and yet she was assuring them that everything would be alright.
“I’m so sorry,” Sheila whispered. “We were so unjust to you and yet, you’re being so kind.”
She saw the hint of a smile from beneath the hood as if the girl was trying to tell her that it was okay. It astounded Sheila of how benevolent the girl was and she only felt guiltier for the things the poor girl was put through.
“We will get you home,” Sheila promised. Then she pursed her lips as if anticipating that something might go wrong. The girl had been greatly weakened by what happened earlier and had no strength to fight. They would have to protect her at all costs.
Even if their lives were snatched from them.
Sheila reached out for her bag and took out an envelope. It had an address written on it.
“If by any chance, we can’t make it tonight,” Sheila said. “Go to this address and give this letter to Jason Cho.”
She handed the letter to the girl who examined it with great curiosity.
“J-Jason Cho?” she stammered in an innocent, childlike tone. Sheila nodded.
“He’s the only one you can trust,” Sheila said with great urgency.
“Sheila, will he even accept your letter?” Charles asked. “We haven’t talked to him in years! He didn’t even come to visit during Alina’s birth!”
“He will,” Sheila stated with confidence. “I know he will. Jason might be angry but-”
The rest of her words were cut off by a blinding light which came crashing at them from nowhere. A large truck hit them from the intersection, toppling their car. Charles lost control of the car and it swirled around the road almost unstoppable. On instinct, Sheila reached out to unlock the backdoor and before the hooded girl could comprehend anything, she was pushed outside.
The girl fell off the car, tumbling down into the forest. She hurt her head and fell momentarily unconscious.
Meanwhile, the car crashed into a tree. The couple inside were knocked out by the force. Charles hit his head on the steering wheel, dying instantly while Sheila was barely moving. Blood gushed out of her forehead and there was immense pain in her chest; she had broken several ribs.
The truck which hit them came to a stop and two dark figures came out of it. One of the men wore a blue jacket with black pants. He was in his mid thirties with blonde hair and skinny build. There was a large gash on his face while a tattoo of a tiger peeped from his neck. His partner was a short, stubby man in his late thirties with dirty blonde hair and several rings on his fingers.
“Are they dead, Kim?” the shorter of the two asked.
“Dunno,” Kim replied. “Han, go and check the backseat. The girl should be there! The boss said not to hurt her!”
Han nodded and checked the backseat. It was empty.
“She’s not here!” Han shouted. “The girl is missing!”
Kim let out a string of curses. The boss was not going to be happy if anything happened to the girl!
“We have to bring her alive!” he hissed. “Find her!”
By that time, the girl stirred. Her eyes fluttered open and she touched her forehead. It was wet and sticky with blood but the wound had healed. Her wounds always healed on their own. Always.
Silently, she crept up to see what was going on. To her horror, the car carrying the couple had crashed and two men were standing there, furiously glancing around.
“She must have run into the forest!” Kim stated. “Let’s find her-”
To his surprise, something grabbed his leg. He looked down to see Sheila was holding his leg. She was gravely injured but still alive. Somehow crawling out of the broken window, she held on to his leg, unwilling to let him go.
“I...I won’t let y-y-you!” she gasped. Even though her body was broken, her willpower was intact. She would not let them succeed and was ready to fight till death to help the girl survive.
Kim glanced at Han, who nodded. Han ran towards the truck and brought out a large rod. He handed the rod to Kim. He raised it over his head and brought it crashing down on Sheila’s head, hitting her with all his might.
Sheila’s head bashed open and the last ounce of her soul left her body. She lay there, dead but Kim kept on hitting her corpse until it was completely unrecognizable.
From her hiding place, the girl held in her screams. Tears stinged her eyes upon seeing the horrific sight and she knew it was all her fault. The only people whom she had cared for were dead. And it was all her fault.
I’m so sorry! She thought tearfully. I’m so sorry...I’m…
The Wang’s had given their lives to protect her from something. She could not understand their urgency and fear but she honored their sacrifice. She could never let them find her.
Still clutching the letter, she slowly backed away from the scene. Her heart was wrenched with sadness but she must run away before they could get to her. She did not know where she was heading to as long as it was away from the bad people hunting her.
Dimly hearing the two men’s footsteps behind her, the girl kept on running. She was faster than them but the grief in her heart was slowing her down. The sight of her beloved ones being murdered like that was etched into her memory which was going to haunt her for eternity.
But she must survive. She had to.
I must reach Jason Cho! She thought with fierce determination. I must!
.....
The sirens of the ambulance reached his ears as he rushed out of his car. There were many police cars around the crash site while photographers clicked pictures of the car. To his horror, the car was totally wrecked in the accident. His mind was numb, something he had not expected. How many years had it been since he saw them? He could not recall. All he remembered was being angry at his sister for running away from their family. She did not even turn up at the funeral of their parents. She had disappeared without a trace, preferring to run away with a lowly scientist instead of staying with his family. The rage he felt had not ebbed but seeing his sister and her husband’s car in that state gave way to an ominous feeling in his heart. As soon as he received the phone call, he abandoned everything and ran to the place wher
Jason rushed through the front door of his mansion, not even bothering to greet the household staff. The nanny he hired for Alina, Jocelyn Shin, came forward to address her master. She was a short woman in her fifties and highly experienced with children. With greying hair and a kind demeanor, Jason had hired her for her excellent track record since he was inexperienced with children.“What happened?” he demanded. “Didn’t you give Alina her medicines?”“I-I did!” Jocelyn protested. “She took her medicines in the morning but I don’t know how she suffered from another attack!”Jason did not stand around to listen to her excuses but ran upstairs where the doctor was examining Alina. He barged in through the door to fin
*Few Hours Ago*Alina turned away from the door and lay on her bed, feeling miserable. Ever since her parents had disappeared, she had been in a state of constant confusion. At first, she was not even understanding what was going on when the police entered her house and told her babysitter that she was to be taken away to live with her uncle, Jason. She had never seen him before but her mother used to talk fondly of him.“I used to carry little Jay on my back everyday to school,” Sheila used to giggle. “He was always sad because our parents used to fight a lot so we were very close. Whenever he heard our parents fight, he would hide in the treehouse for hours. I was the only one who was able to find him every time…”Whenever her m
*Present*The girl blinked. Alina stood there, staring at the girl with large, curious eyes.“Are you running away from my uncle as well?” Alina asked. The girl shook her head, confused.“Well, I’m not really running away,” Alina went on. “I just wanna spook him a little. And also…”She clenched her fists, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. “I also want to see my parents,” she added. "They are apparently at a place called 'grave'. I want to meet them and go home!" The girl sensed a sadness in the child’s tone, unable to comprehend why the kid was sad. But the girl’s soft heart was a
Alina was awed by the ethereal beauty of the mermaid. Her long, silver tail glittered under the moonlight while her skins shone like a pearl. There was a calming aura emitting from her which was alleviating Alina’s earlier anger against her uncle. Just looking at the mermaid was so relaxing and made her happy.“I can’t believe that mermaids actually exist!” Alina squealed. “I’ve been searching for one for so long!”She had read about mermaids and their amazing powers. The books she read were fictional but mermaids were faster than normal humans and quite strong too. They were known to be intelligent creatures which traveled from one sea to another in order to roam around the world.“You’re so pretty…” Alina s
*Three Weeks Ago*Miles away from the city, a lonely building stood in the midst of a deep forest. It was hidden from the world by thick trees and darkness but the area was surrounded with secret electric fences in case any person wandered that way. The building was shrouded with mystery and isolation, a large shadow of cold despair falling on it.Inside the building were a series of cell like rooms, kept locked despite having no occupants. There was no one on that floor but a few bottles lay on the floor, indicating that there were people in the building. A small cafeteria was located at one end, where the stove was heating up food for the people living there while a dark corridor led towards a series of stairs which led to the fourth floor. The fourth floor had no wi
Alina crept out of the house to look for the mermaid in the pond. She glanced around to make sure none of the servants were nearby.“Are you here, Ms. Mermaid?” she hissed. Silence.“Ms. Mermaid?” she called, this time a little louder. But her calls were met with silence. She looked down and noticed that there were muddy footprints coming out of the water. Frowning, she followed the footprints, and to her horror, the prints went towards the house!“Yikes!” she exclaimed. If her uncle saw the mermaid, all hell would break loose! She quickly ran towards the mansion, determined to stop Jason from meeting the mermaid. What if he drove her away? Or worse, sent her to a zoo or circus? E
The Mermaid slid open the clothes’ wardrobe and hid in it as soon as she heard the door to the walk-in closet open. She peeked through the opening only to find the same guy from last night, standing in front of another wardrobe right next to hers, almost nude! He was only wrapped in the lower area with a white towel. But she could not tear her eyes away from him. It was not his staunch body or bulging muscles which were forcing her to watch him.The scars on his back had kept her eyes locked on him. There were not one or two scars but many on his back which looked as if they had been fading over time. Her reveries broke when he moved again.“Uh oh…” she murmured and closed the closet again. She could see his silhouette walking around the closet. Open
*Three Years Later*Jason was pacing back and forth outside the operation theater. His heart was anxious but thankfully, it was not in pain like the other times. However, it was extremely cold thanks to what was going on inside.“Relax uncle!”He looked around to see a spunky eleven year old girl with long, curly hair and the same blue eyes as him. Alina had a growth spurt over the past three years. She was now almost reaching his shoulder.“Aunt Alya will be fine!” she told him. “If you get too anxious, she’ll only panic.”“I can’t help it!” he scowled. “And kids shouldn’t be here! Why aren’t you at school?”
The sun was shining brightly in the sky. Its lights fell on the series of tombstones in the graveyard. Colorful flowers were blooming all around the family which was standing next to a pair of graves with a shared tombstone. Despite the nice weather, the family was solemn as they paid their respects. The tombstone had a writing on it:“Here lies Sheila and Charles Wang. Loving parents and good people. Date 19XX to 20XX”Max dabbed his eyes, lamenting the loss of his granddaughter and her husband. Cain and Jason told him that they died in a car crash and also revealed that Alina is Sheila’s daughter who was being taken care of by her uncle and his fiance. Jason and Cain stood on his sides with their lovers. Alina was kneeling in front of her parents’ graves, silently crying.“I miss you
Alina woke up in the hospital. She was heavily sedated; Jenna’s beating had caused her arm to be fractured.“Alya...sis…” she mumbled.“I’m here.”The girl’s eyes flung open and she was delighted to see that Alya was there with her.“You’re here…” she whispered, reaching out for Alya. Alya smiled and took her hand.“I am. You should rest.”“How long have I been here?”“Almost two weeks,” Alya said. “You were badly hurt by Jenna.”“But...Aunt Jenna
Jason and Cain sped towards the factory. Cain was on the phone with his men, giving them instructions.“My men just informed me that Heath Seo was spotted outside that factory we’re heading to,” Cain told him. “How did you know he’d be there?”“I just do,” Jason muttered. Cain was suspicious but he did not ask anything else. He had filled in Jason about what happened at the Tang mansion that morning and even though Jason was tense, he was also worried about Maxwell.“Looks like grandfather took this well,” he muttered.“Well, he never really liked my mother in the first place so he wasn’t too sad seeing her leave,” Cain remarked. They were now about to leave the main city but the factory was st
Jason pulled up in front of a restaurant when he suddenly felt the familiar sensation in his heart.“Agh!” he winced when his chest became cold. He was gasping for breath and closed his eyes to lay his head on the steering wheel.“What the hell?” he muttered. “Why is that sensation happening again?”He touched his heart and it was colder than the earlier attacks. Jason was sure that it was a warning sign and that Alya was in immense danger. Flashes of her running through the rain were popping in his head.“Why is she outside?” he whispered. He was so engrossed in his pain that he did not notice a familiar Maybach pulling up behind his car. There was a knock on his window and to his surprise, it was Cain.
*Few Hours Ago*Monty arrived at the place where Jenna called him. It was a narrow alley located within an industrial area where several factories were meshed together. The buildings were in a series of rows, put side by side. A small dockyard was situated at the end of the place where a few ships were anchored. The workers had gone home for the day because the sun was setting. The gloomy clouds hovered in the sky, indicating that it was going to rain that night. Monty looked around for Jenna and finally spotted her standing a few meters away. He slowly walked towards her.“You called for me?” he asked.Jenna was wearing a pair of large sunglasses and she took them off to examine him.“Did you fi
Malorie quietly followed Cain to the patio and waited for him to talk. He was quiet for a while before turning to face her.“You should have told me about this,” he began. “That my mom was threatening you. We could have worked something out.”“I wanted to find our child first,” she replied in a small tone. “If I had told you, she might have gotten alerted and killed Billy. I couldn’t take the risk.”Cain stared at her for a while before sighing. “We’re both idiots,” he muttered. “We talk about being on our own but in the end, we let my parents manipulate us…”Malorie was staring at her fingers, unable to understand what to do. So many things had happened and it was going too fast.
Dahlia was hosting her regular afternoon tea with the socialites at her home. As a tradition, she hosted these gatherings every week with the elite class women so that she could increase her network and influence. Despite the setback with the wedding, she was now more determined to match Cain up with someone even more influential than Jenna.“Mrs. Wang, I hear that your daughter Catherine is coming back to town!” Dahlia was saying. They were sitting in the living room, sipping tea and having cakes. Butler Austin put the trays of food in front of them and stood aside.“She is,” Mrs. Wang replied. “For a business deal.”“I hear that she is now a very renowned interior decorator,” Dahlia remarked. “Maybe we should have her over for dinner sometime next week? I&rsquo
Malroie was watching the news, filled with dread. Over the past week, there was nothing other than James Park’s sudden death which had caused the business world to go into a frenzy. The stocks of his company fell and it was acquired by the notorious research firm owner, Heath Seo. Jenna took over the business and the Tang’s were in great debt. If there was no additional investment, the Tang’s were going to be ruined. The reporters were crowding outside Cain’s office. They hounded him as soon as he was out.“Mr. Cain, what’s your next strategy to pull this business together?” the reporters demande.d “Can you save the company?”“Is it true that your wedding to Jenna Park has been called off?”“Can you
