AMARACHI
I took hold of her hand and she led me to her parked car. We got into the car and the driver ignited the engine.
"Take us home" she ordered but with a soft tone.
The driver nodded and turned the car around.I still felt a bit tense which I'm sure she noticed as I found her gaze on me.
"What is it my dear?"she asked me with a smile on her face.
I didn't want her to think I was being rude so I smiled back at her and shook my head.
"Nothing ma"
She sighed and let out a laugh"it's ok. I understand you may be a little scared. I'm just trying to help you"
I didn't know this woman from Adam but the kindness she showed me within this few minutes surpassed aunty Lydia's attitude towards me my entire life.
"You can come to my house whenever you want to fetch water ok. My door is always open"she added.
I smiled again, this time it was genuine. I already liked this woman.
We got to her house and the driver honked the horn. A man on uniform came out and opened the gate for us.
She lowered down the car window of her seat and smiled at the gateman who was waving at her.
"Wow! It seems her workers really love her. Who wouldn't love this woman? She's so kind"
"Madam welcome! you come back early o"the gateman said in pidgin.
He quickly ran to the car and and opened the door for her.I opened the door and stepped down. I walked towards her and stood by her side with my jerry-can (water gallon). Her house was magnificent. I couldn't help but admire this grand splendor. "Um yes. I just came to drop..."her voice trailed off as she turned towards me and found me staring at her house with my jaws dropped.I noticed her gaze and casted my head downwards feeling embarrassed.
She just caught me staring at her house! What would she think of me!?
She smiled at me and held my hand,"I came to drop her off. Behave yourself o Philemon. She is going to fetch water here"
"Good morning" I greeted Philemon as I brought myself to look at him and smiled.
He nodded his head and greeted me back.
"Ehen Cynthia!"she called out as we stood outside.
"Bia(come) this girl" she added. The door of her house opened and a young girl came outside smiling."Welcome ma"she greeted and she turned to me and smiled.
"She addressed her as ma, possibly this is also a worker"
"Cynthia show ummm..."she turned to me which made me realise I hadn't even told her my name.
"Amarachi"I added quickly.
"Yes, show Amarachi where she can get water ok. Whenever she wants water let her fetch it"she ordered in that commanding but soft tone.
Cynthia nodded and took hold of my hand, leading me to the back of the house.
Her duplex was really magnificent. I never believed I would ever enter Chief Justice's compound.
We walked in silence, which was killing me. I didn't like it.
"Your madam is very nice o"I said to start up a conversation."Yes she is. She is really a kind woman" Cynthia replied as we approached the tap at the back.
"Why is she back here in this village?"
God! I shouldn't have asked that! It wasn't my business for Christ sakes. I quickly regretted asking and hoped Cynthia wouldn't get angry.I dropped my jerry-can beneath the metallic opening of the tap."Actually she came back for a business. Atleast that's what I know of" Cynthia replied.
I nodded and smiled, turning on the tap.
"Her youngest son Jordan will also come back soon too"she added.
"Fetch as much as you want ok. Take care Amarachi"Cynthia said and walked away leaving me in the backyard.
Jordan was coming back? That's good. It will be good for him to know his roots. Jordan was the last and youngest son.
He hardly came back but whenever he did I heard he caught the eye of the girls around.I never had time to think about such nonsense and daydream about being with a boy. I had never seen the guy to begin with."Jordan you must be very luck to have such a mother like this. God bless her"
†††††††††
I lifted the jerry-can to my head and walked towards the gate of the house. I didn't know what time it was now but I knew I had been fetching for probably almost an hour. The darkness that covered the horizon had been replaced by a blue sky. The stars had gone into hiding allowing the early morning sun come into place.
I was really happy, I had fetched water very quickly and this was my last round.
"Maybe it was a good thing that aunty Lydia woke me up early. I wouldn't have met this lovely woman if I didn't go out early"A smile formed on my lips as I thought of Mrs Justice.
I opened the gate of the house and walked outside.I met Cynthia on my way, walking with a sack bag towards the house, looks like she had gone to buy some food stuffs.
"You are already through?"she asked surprised.
"Yes o. God bless Mrs Justice. Thank you so much"I replied as I tried to balance the jerry-can on my head properly.
Little drops of water were dropping on my face from the jerry-can and I tried to wipe them with one hand whilst the other hand held my jerry-can on my head.Cynthia nodded and smiled at me.
"Take care ok. Bye Amarachi" she said and waved at me."Bye Cynthia. Dalu o(well done o)"I replied and continued my journey home.
Once home, I headed to the backyard to drop my jerry-can.
Aunty Lydia and Ogechi were sitting on the corridor eating apple and chatting happily.
"Ogechi good morning"I greeted but I got no reply just a wicked glare. A deep sigh escaped my mouth as I saw her eying me.Ogechi and I were agemates, it seemed both our mothers got pregnant in the same period.
Ogechi was naturally endowed. She was very beautiful and had a light complexion but she was a beauty without brains. Her big body size and shape got to her head, she used it to get things from men and her mother approved of it.
"I wonder when this girl will change?"
Once in the backyard, I dropped my jerry-can and breathed a sigh of relief. It was really a relief. The sun hadn't even risen much but I was already done.
I was beaming with happinesses as I looked at the jerry-can filled with water.
Suddenly I heard a noise, it was coming from the store room.
What could that be?"Obu Okey(it's a rat). Those rats are coming back again"I cried out in disgust as I approached the store room.
I met the door of the store room open and was surprised to see my grandmother holding tubers of yams and arranging them.
"Ahh Nne!(mother) You scared me o. I thought it was rats. What are you doing here now?"
My grandmother put down the tubers and walked outside with her walking stick. She closed the door and turned to face me with a smile on her face.
Grandmother was old but still beautiful. One could easily see she was very beautiful in her youthful days."Nnwam (my child) I was just checking the food items in the store room. Let me know how that witch is taking care of the food items"
I let out a laugh and shook my head. Nne always calls aunty Lydia a witch. I don't think I've ever heard Nne address aunty Lydia as 'daughter'.
"Nne you don't have to call her a witch now" I pleaded on aunty Lydia's behalf as we walked towards the frontage of the house.
"Mba(no). E ku zia that thing (don't say that thing). Lydia bu amosu(Lydia is a witch)"
"Nne"I said again laughing as I put my hand over her shoulders.
We approached the front of the house and was about to enter when Aunty Lydia stopped me.
"Bia(come) are you done fetching water!?" She queried harshly.
"Lazy girl"Ogechi scoffed beneath her breath.
I ignored Ogechi's rude remark and turned my gaze to my aunty.
"I'm done fetching water aunty"Both Ogechi's and aunty Lydia's jaw dropped on hearing my statement.
"How? It is now that the community tap opens and you are already done?"aunty Lydia asked."You are truly a witch. Aru!(abomination) Everybody come and see o! Amara is a witch! A she-devil!"Lydia added lamenting and shouting as if I had killed somebody.
"Lydia you wanted her to fetch water and now she has fetched it so let her be!"Nne shouted at Lydia.
"Nne let mama query her o. Let us know the magic she used to fetch the water"Ogechi chirped in to support her mother.
"What is this new problem I have to face now?"
FlashbackMany Years Earlier Lydia quickly and stealthily walked out of the compound, opening the gate quietly and closing it in that same manner so as not to make a noise. "Where could Francis be now?"Lydia thought to herself once outside the gate."Yes, he is probably at Dike's workshop. Francis my love prepare to loose your Chinenye" A smile formed on her lips on the thought of Francis loosing his love for Chinenye. She quickly hurried towards meeting Francis. She would have to pass the community market which was a very good way of seeing Adanne or as she is popularly referred to as "Nne", Francis' and Emeka's mother.
AMARACHI I felt sick in my stomach every time I had to explain myself to aunty Lydia. She can never love me, I want her to love me the way she loves Ogechi but she can never love me. I atleast thought she will be happy on seeing that I fetched the water early but instead she called me a witch. Was it fair?Isn't this life being too unfair to me?"Answer them Amara. Quiet their tongues"Nne nudged my shoulder.I had been silent the whole time I didn't even realise it. "Nne she can't say anything now. What can she say? You are spoiling Amarachi o"Ogechi remarked harshly which got her a glare from Nne."Aunty Lydia"I began"Yes the community tap was obviously closed but I met Chief Justice's wife and she took me to her house and told me to fetch from her house" I explained.I saw how quickly both aunty Lydia
AMARACHII stepped outside the door of the house, putting on an okrika(fairly used) blue floral gown. I didn't have much fancy clothes like Ogechi, aunty Lydia hardly bought me any nice cloth so the ones I had, I made sure to keep them in good shape. My afro virgin hair was combed and packed to a bun and I carried a little handbag which contained some sowing equipments.I was already through with the house chores and I had already freshened up but I had not eaten. The heat of the sun had already begun, it was probably ten o'clock by now.I spotted aunty Lydia and her husband, my uncle Francis, sitting under the umbrella mango tree discussing. 'Uncle Francis', that tittle 'uncle', was he really my uncle? He accompanied his wife in maltreating me, he hates me the way aunty Lydia hates me.Is this man really my late's father's younger brother?I doubt it.If
AMARACHI After I finished sweeping, I proceeded with cleaning the sewing machines, tables and chairs. I had to make sure everything was neat and orderly if not I'll attract the wrath of Aunty Lydia.Something which I definitely didn't want. I had already gotten enough of her anger this morning, I didn't want more.Once finished, I sat down on my own personal sewing machine. It was actually my late mother's own. The only material things I had in remembrance of my late mother was the locket she gave me when I was still little and this sowing machine. The locket had a small space for storing a photograph and her picture was in it. I wore it everytime, it became my skin. I never took it off because I was so use to it. I took some materials from a polythene bag next to me. Gosh customers cloth! They were so many and they needed to be sewed. I really worked all round th
AMARACHI After my friends left, I went back to my work. It really wasn't easy. Time moved really slow and it frustrated me.I was cutting, sewing and mending customers cloth. More and more customers kept on trooping inside aunty Lydia's shop, bringing materials for sewing.I took measurements endlessly. I liked the fact that aunty Lydia's business was booming but the effect was taking a toll on me seriously. I was working round the clock here and I didn't even get a 'thank you' from aunty Lydia.I kept on working until aunty Lydia came in during noon. She was on a yellow lace top and she tied a wrapper matching the lace coupled with her handbag and her heavy jewellery.I immediately stood up and cleaned her particular seat for her even though I had cleaned it before."Aunty good afternoon" I greeted her with a courtesy bow.She eyed me and hiss
AMARACHI God I'm so dead!Aunty Lydia kept on screaming, calling me a thief. I didn't steal anything. I was innocent.I knew she wouldn't listen to my side of the story. My heart was beating so fast as if it was threatening to break out of my rib cages."God please help me""Aunty wait... it's..."I began but I was quickly interrupted by her."It's what?! It's what Amarachi!? After that old hag called your grandmother will see you as an angel not knowing you are a thief! Nothing but a thief! Just like your mother!"Really? My mother? Why does she always add my mother in her insults! Why can't she let my mother rest?My mother isn't a thief and I'm not one either."Aunty Lydia my mother isn't a thief"I said immediately surprised by my own bravery."What did you say?"Aunty Lydia asked
AMARACHI"You don't have to worry, everything is sorted out"the young handsome stranger said jolting me out of my thoughts and back to reality.I nodded slowly at him. I then turned to look at my aunty. Immediately our eyes met, she put on a fake smile and stretched my bag over to me."Go home my dear"she said rather too friendly. What a facade!I knew once I arrived home, I'll receive the full punishment. All this was just an act to cover up her inhuman behaviour.I nodded my head and took my bag from her, turning to leave but then the young man grabbed my arm, as if telling me to stop."Hold on. How much got missing?"he asked as he brought out his wallet. My aunty eyes widened immediately. I really hope she doesn't collect any money from him. After all the lady took the three thousand naira I had!"Eehm it w
AMARACHI I trudged back home in pains, trying to cover my bruises whenever I spotted someone staring at me. Today had been such a tough day for me. I just wanted to go home and rest--which I knew I would never get.Rest.I can never get rest as long as am staying in that house. It was already evening and I needed to quickly prepare dinner.Even in this condition, I knew better than to rest. Lydia will still make me work.I had suffered enough today, I don't want to suffer again.A deep sigh escaped my lips as I approached my gate. Stepping inside, I spotted Nne sitting under the mango tree sleeping. I quietly closed the gate and stealthily walked inside. I didn't want her to see me because of my injuries. If she did, she will surely ask questions and hell will break loose once she finds out aunty Lydia did this to me. I just wanted to walk past

Amarachi let out a soft whimper whilst Jordan's one arm made its way to her breast, fondling it and tweaking her nipples through her night gown. She felt her panties becoming wet while Jordan's deft fingers kept on groping onto her breasts."Jordan.."She moaned out of breath as he pulled away only to crush his lips back on hers again, giving her no time to breathe. He let out a low guttural grown and pressed her firmly against him.Amarachi could feel his hard sex poking her thighs and it sent jitters down her body.Jordan trailed wet kisses down her neck and nuzzled against it."I'll love to go rough on you piccolo"Jordan whispered seductively which only increased the wetness in Amarachi's panties."Please go soft"Amarachi heard herself plea.He pulled back and gazed at her."I'll love this night to be perfect for you Amarachi. I want to make love to you and mak
Amarachi walked out of the bathroom, her bathroom robe hugging on to her wet body. She sighed and walked towards the bed, sitting on it. A deep sigh left from her parted lips once more. She loosened her braids, letting it fall down as she laid down backwards on the bed.Although she felt sad by what took place yesterday in Lydia's house, still deep down she also felt this sudden peace of mind knowing she had unraveled the hidden truths. She still couldn't believe Lydia would go that far out of jealousy.A jealous heart was truly more dangerous than poison.Lydia let jealousy eat deep into her that she totally became immune to human sympathy. She had let resentments and animosity rule over her life to the extent that she passed the hatred over to Amarachi.Amarachi never wanted to believe Lydia was that wicked but now she had confirmed it for herself. Now she owed nothing to that family anymore. She had paid her last respects and she knew she would never cro
Jordan and Amarachi both got down from the car with Amarachi feeling excited to see Nonso. He was actually the only person she got so excited to see. She silently prayed he would be home. His gate was fully opened and they both entered inside the compound.Everything just looked the same to Amarachi. She suddenly became nostalgic as she remembered those moments where she and Rebecca would come visit him. She felt her heart beat faster with each step they took inside the compound. Amarachi spotted a parked car and noticed the boot was left opened with luggages in it. It was different from the car she knew Nonso had.She wondered if some other people were now living in the compound. She dreaded that thought. She just wanted and hoped to meet Nonso before she finally travelled out. He had been such a huge emotional shoulder to her and she just wanted to see him again,
"Lydia why did you do this? My mother loved you, she loved Ogechi too. She wanted the best for all of us. Do you know she would always tell me back then that she couldn't wait to see I and Ogechi grow up to be successful women with good husbands? She loved your daughter Lydia. She loved you Lydia"Amarachi said as the tears kept streaming down her cheeks. She didn't even want to retrain herself from crying. She cried so uncontrollably that her body shook. Amarachi held on to Jordan tighter for support because she felt she could pass out any moment.Jordan planted a tender kiss on her cheek and patted her hair softly as he maintained his hold on her waist.Lydia fell to her knees and crouched to Amarachi's feet, her tears dropping on her feet whilst she wailed and pleaded for forgiveness. Amarachi closed her eyes and cried bitterly as Lydia begged at her feet.Francis stared at his wife, disgusted by her. H
Rebecca sat on a plastic chair, fanning herself with a handfan. The heat was unbearable inside the cramped self contain she now called her home. Perspiration covered her face as she kept on fanning herself whilst Emmanuel, the man who was responsible for her pregnancy laid on the bed, laughing to himself as he kept on chatting on his phone.Rebecca eyed Emmanuel as he kept on being focused on his phone not even minding Rebecca's multiple glares. Rebecca cursed and cried within her over her ill fate. She was heavily pregnant with his child and her mother had forced her to come stay with him. Nonso had utterly rejected her and cut her off from his life. Emmanuel had proven to her that he was just a brute. He never came back home sometimes, hardly provided money for feeding and was a strong womaniser. Rebecca sometimes couldn't believe this was the life she had to deal with it. She
AMARACHI I faced the large dressing mirror that stood on the wall horizontally.I couldn't believe I was actually back in Enugu. I felt so nauseous when we landed yesterday evening. I truly didn't know if it was because it was my first time using a plane or because of the fact that I was back in this state that held so much bad memories for me.Jordan held me softly as we waited for our designated driver that will take us to his mum's house. I couldn't even sleep well the entire night. I twisted and turned restlessly on the bed. I just couldn't wait for dawn so I could go meet aunty Lydia. I needed to move on and rap this up as soon as I could. Today would be the day I found out the truth surrounding my birth and my mother's death. I wanted nothing but the truth. All my life, I had alw
Raphael buried his face down wards with his hands resting on the table in front of him. He didn't know how long he had been thinking but his thoughts ran wild. Nicole was avoiding him and it hurt him deeply. The only reason he killed Tobi was because the brute was forcing himself on her. Rape was something he could never tolerate.Sex should be by consent not by force. He wasn't just forcing himself on any woman, the motherfucker was forcing himself on his woman. And he had to teach him a lesson. A capital lesson. Now Nicole was avoiding him like a plague. He only did that to protect her. Her staying away from him was equivalent to starving him of food and water. He wanted to hold her in his arms and tell her a million times how much he loved her but she was avoiding him like he had leprosy. His love life was going hay wire and now he will have to leave for Italy soon. Ivan
A week had passed since that fearful incident. Nicole had entirely made sure to stay away from Raphael. She tried as much as she could to avoid his calls and texts and avoided places she knew she could bump into him.Even though she felt he was tracking and watching her, she tried her best to avoid him physically. Whenever she remembered that horrifying murder, it shook her and made her nauseous.Tobi worked under her father and he got to know of it. He was so distraught when he heard that Tobi passed away. Tobi was one of his brightest workers and loosing him was like loosing part of the brains of the company. Her father had promised to fund his funeral and he also urged the police to bring the murderers of Tobi to book. Nicole had never felt so scared in her life especially when she saw the news of Tobi's murder on the headlines. The police believed he was beaten to death by thieves. Raphael's men
