He jerked his head to the side; the smirk tugged at it. "And why not? You think you can stop me?"

"Try me," Luca growled.

The air in that room was dead set for tension inside of it. Her eyes frantically skipped from the gun onto Luca, and the panic climbed down her throat. She wanted to scream, wanted to run, but her legs turned into lead.

"Pity," he said, the finger in ring tightening on the trigger. "Seems with you I can finally take something precious from the De Luca's.

A shot rang out.

"Emilia!"

Luca's voice was hoarse with desperation as he launched himself at her, sending her to the ground. Pain seared through her shoulder as they landed on the pavement, but it was nothing compared to the deafening sound of the gunfire.

She couldn't hold her breath a moment longer. Lying on the ground, ears ringing, her vision hazy, Emilia suddenly heard through the haze:

"Emilia!" Luca's voice finally cut through the fogginess as his hands came into contact with her shoulders, shaking

Chapter 1"You look bored, want to come and have fun with me?" a silky voice whispered just over her shoulder. There was Emilia De Luca turning towards a tall, broad-shouldered man in sleek black suits and styled after a raven: dark shiny eyes through the mask he was wearing seemed to hold something dangerous yet inviting. A shiver of excitement coursed through her; a rush she hadn't had in a very long while. This was the thrill she came for: to be someone unknown at least for a few hours."Aren't you bold, to think I'd be interested?" Emilia said, flashing a sly smile over the rim of her champagne glass as her gaze finally met his. "Besides, a girl never tells her plans to strangers."His laughter was low and slid down her spine like a caress. "Then let me make this night worthwhile." He reached out a hand toward her. "What's your name?“Wouldn't you like to know?" she teased, her voice low but sure. She leaned in a little farther, her eyes wandering over his chiseled jawline and the

And however many times she opened her eyes, reality, she was forced to admit, persisted."Pregnant," she whispered, the word all too foreign on her lips. She didn't even know who was speaking anymore. "How could I let this happen?"All of it came back now, flooding into her head, intoxicating anonymity, the gaze of fire under the mask, a racing heartbeat against their kiss, and an utter feeling of being another person altogether. Never had she felt that free, even for just one night. Now she felt more like her liberation was some faraway dream smashed by undeniable

He had zoned out again. He was still seeing the lady from that night, her laughter, her smile, and the sparkle of her eyes behind the mask. Sometimes, even when he listened to the most critical discussions, he just could not shake off that memory from his mind."Father, sorry," Luca mumbled, clearing his throat. He glared at the man opposite him across the table, trying to mask his momentary lapse. His father's steely gaze narrowed once more with suspicion."Luca, I don't need distractions now," his father continued, lacing into his voice a healthy dose of impatience. "Luca, slow down! What's going on?" she wrenched her arm free, swinging around a corner. He spun to face her, dark and commanding. "I told you to stay close. Do you want to get caught in the crossfire?" "I don't even know what's happening!" she hissed, trying to sound defiant despite a shaking voice. "The Vitaels are here," Luca growled. "They have been waiting for a perfect moment like this. And now they go after the two of our families. If you think staying behind was safer, you're insane." Her chest constricted at the name, Vitaels. Stories of theirs she knew-brutal raids and strategic murders, they don't negotiate, eliminate. Yet she couldn't shake this nagging doubt in her brain. She hated being at Luca's mercy, especially when she could feel suspicion simmering below the surface. "What's the plan, then?" she tried to ask, steadying her voice. He jerked his head down the corridor. "We're heading for the back exit. There's a car waiting outside. We get out of here, regroup,
