I stayed indoors for the rest of the day and at night…

We made a gigantic mess. I can't explain exactly what happened, but when my consciousness returned I was in a bathtub of chilly water and my head throbbed. It was already morning and I had caught a cold. Ria was still asleep when I woke up. I took my bath and prepared for the day's work. I had many plans. I needed to see Damien. Of course, he mustbhave guessed that I was at my house, but… It's just not fair enough.

I opened the refrigerator in the kitchen to get a drink and realized our brandy remained. I drank three last night, she forced me. Apparently, she cheated. I was about to hiss when I felt a soft tickled on my waist, then a familiar warm embrace. Ria.

“You're finally awake.” I mumbled.

“That's because I spent the entire night watching you.” She said,

“Watching me? And you left me in that cold? How heartless!” I sneezed in her face.

She laughed. “That was the only remedy I knew. I mean… The only one I could give you, dar

"Hey"I said as I walked into his house. He had a grin on this face that opposed my expectations. Of course, he had questions, but why make faces?“I could not make it home last night. I was at my place.”“It's alright Paige. I'm relieved to see you.”“Really?”He archives brow. “Is anything wrong?” He sat my by side.“Nothing much. Ehm… I haven't found my mum.”His countenance tell, I could read his thoughts this time. He felt guilty of not thinking about her early enough. He should not be.“Damien, I don't want you to feel bad for me. Please.”He nodded, cupped my hands in his. “We'll find her. God will help us.”“I don't know.” I muttered. “She would be in a psychiatrist hospital somewhere. That's all I know for now”He sighed, took my hands and let me in his study room. I'd have called it his personal library if I didn't see a piano in it. Does he have that everywhere? Music guy…He sat at the carved wooden table, a laptop on the table, and offered me a seat by his side.“I'm hopin

“You said the operation was successful. Why isn't she up by now? Did you make a mistake that you're trying to hide? What the hell is wrong? Wake my niece up right now?!” I heard muffled up voices. I was lost in this dark abyss of voidness. Even there, I could tell who the voice belonged to, and I knew he was shouting.“Calm down, Master Kam, we didn't make any mistakes. She is fine, but…” He trailed off.“But what? She has been like this for days!”“We lost her womb in the process. She had a hemorrhage. It's not her first surgery, that caused many complications. I warned against that before we went on with the surgery.”“ And I gave my permission. Well, she must wake up!” I heard angry footsteps and another footstep. I was alone again. Light slowly invaded the space in my little world and I came back to life. But not real life.I would call it a dream or an illusion. I saw Damien by my bedside. He had tears in his eyes and he looked super worried. “You're awake, Finally!” He shrieked

CHAPTER ONEKamila Dickson, exhausted and sweaty, dropped her glossy handbag on the dining room table. She could alreadyfeel her muscles starting to cramp up and knew she was goingto be in serious pain that night. "The muscles of my back and neck deserve a special treat." She told herself. But as she looked over at Kyle, she couldn’t help but smile. He might help with that. The blank look on his face toldher he was just as tired. They both had stressful jobs. Kamila, a young lawyer and her newly wedded husband Kyla, a policeman. Newly wedded? Well, they've just been married for a year. “Tired?” He asked her, as if reading her mind.“Did you get us dinner?” Kamila asked, already contemplating whether she would be able to make dinner or not.“I'll make us something. Go freshen up, girl.” He winked at her and disappeared into the kitchen. Kamila smiled at herself and hurried to her room. How much she loved and cherished that man. Sometimes she questions herself if she really deserve

Kamila's POVI scanned the hallway for any signs of Him before entering her office, the one I shared with a senior colleague. I greeted Linda, who only nodded, typing away at her computer. I frowned at the sight of the new heap of files on my desk. That only said one thing, I am late again. Well, in normal sense ,I am not but if my boss gets to work before me, then I am. “Who dropped these here?” I asked, finally settling in my comfy chair.“Who else if not Lisa?” Linda sounded too harsh and immediately. What a terrible start of a good day. Kyle had said it was a good day this morning without giving me a reason. Actually, he says that everyday. What I see isn't any good.I, of all people, understands Linda's frustration more than anyone. Linda has been in this institution years before I joined, and she only got one promotion. The one which took her from work in the main hall to this private room for two. That promotion which she got before Mac Anthony (A nickname we call our boss wh

He wouldn't say a word while I knocked, so I opened the door myself and popped my head in.“Doctor Mark, May I?”“Sure.” He nodded.“If you have come to question me about your query then you should leave because I have nothing to say to you.”“Well, I've come for that and something else. But I'll treat that first.” I said, fearlessly (one of the reasons why I always get in trouble with him). “That query was unnecessary, uncalled-for. I only did the right thing, Mark!”“You disobeyed me! Outright nonsense. Now we will have to take a case that would do nothing but waste our time.”“She deserved justice, and you weren't ready to give it. I can't just dispose of case files that need urgent attention because of the risks involved.”“Are trying to say I'm incompetent? I explained to you that it was all beyond our capacity. You're still a baby lawyer, and you know nothing. “I wouldn't mind if that was an insult because it isn't the first and won't be the last time he would call me a pee wee

“Hello.” I waved my ID card at the police man at the counter. He had this evil grin that I was so familiar with. If not for Kyle, I'd have hated all policemen. Well, Kyle wasn't at the counter when we met.“What do you want?”“ I was sent to see one Miss Km, that is imprisoned here.”He hesitated for a while before asking me to wait. I almost hissed. I do not have much time. I cancelled my lunch with Kyle to be here, and lunchtime will be over in less than twenty minutes. Twenty minutes or else I'll be in big trouble with Mark.“You can go see her at the visitors' room.”“Thank you.” I nodded and left. I imagined what could happen when we meet, when I meet her. The kind of questions I'm going to ask. No. I'm not asking too many questions, just observe, Kamila. She's probably a psych already.I sat at the table awaiting her arrival. When I checked my phone, I noticed that Kyle had sent me tons of "question mark" messages. I wasn't fair. But I just had to do something, something for ju

“Don't ask me how my day went because it was from one hell to another.” I warned Kyle as he walked in from work that night. “Dinner is ready.” I said soberly. “Go freshen up and let's have dinner because I'm starving.”“Okay, wife.” He planted a soft kiss on my forehead and left. He smelled of gunpowder, not a new scent, but one that I dreaded. Can today be any better? My dear Kyle must have been in a gun battle. I hate to think that one day he might get injured. I wished I could just ask him to stop being a policeman. That wouldn't be fair to him. And fairness is all I live for.Talking about fairness, I had the talk of my life with Mark, and he asked me to go home. There must have been an informant at the police station. I immediately suspect the man at the counter. I swear, if I had met Kyle at the counter, I never would have allowed myself to fall in love with him. Those men just aren't human. The way they treat lawyers, especial the one who sticks to the truth, is so irritating.

He woke up with a kick, made by his legs. Another nightmare! He sniffed soberly and dragged himself to the bathroom to wash off the dream not only from his face but from his life. She might be missing now, but she'll be back. He told himself. He was on a compulsory leave and when he checked the time, he saw that he really needed the leave. At first when his boss asked him to stay off work until she is found he argued. To him, it was better that he was at work. He will be more miserable if he's alone without her. He and his team has worked so hard for the past two days, even at night. He settled in late the night before because he had visited a dead trail. It's always been a dead trail. He dragged himself down the stairs to the kitchen, but could not enter. Everywhere smells of her.He kicked a pillow on the rug and sat by the couch. The same way they sit every night. They prefer to sit on the rug than the couch. He sucked on a tear.“Shit…” he hissed, throwing away another pillow. He

I won't forgive myself, either. It's all my fault.“I'm lost, “I declared“Since we're here together, and we have all day, I'll explain to you.I sat by his side, putting on my only asset, the tape recorder“Jude Kam use to think he was a powerful man. Kyle got home that night sad and distressed. It was the second night that he was going to spend without her. He had searched all the places he could think of. He had been to that address she sent to him the umpteenth time. Yet, she still was missing. He took a bottle of wine from the fridge and gulped in it. Hoping that it would ease his tension. " She's not dead. "He told himself. "It's not two days yet. I'll find her."He blamed himself severally for allowing her take up the case when he knew what danger was in it, blamed himself for ignoring his phone beep while at a rescue mission. Of course, it should have been switched off but he didn't because of his gut feeling. Yet he still failed her.The landline hung on the wall beeped and he reached for it immediately. There was an unfamiliar ID and he wouldn't have picked it if it was not for Kamila's disappearance."Hello."He rasped."Hello, Miss Dickson. I finally tried your home number today. How's everything?""It's her husband speak

I wasn't dead. My eyelids were heavy, and I was cold.it was all too dark, and I could barely see. I moved my hands, and it moved, and my legs moved too. The last I remember was that I was pushed into a vehicle, and that seemed like an eternity ago.I grunted in pain as I pushed off my bruised knees. I was an idiot. I should have waited. I should have called Kyle. He warned me not to go anywhere without him. Paige warned me too. Now I've failed her. I'm caged in here by God knows who, and I won't be able to help her out of there. What is a disaster?!Once I was on my feet, I ripped off the tape on my mouth. Did they expect me to sleep forever? Tch...I took in my surroundings. I was in a cage at one end of a closed basement, and a dim lantern on the side of the space cast just enough light to see dark walls.“Shit!” I gasped. The heat the lantern created was just too unbearable, and I thought that it was the intended torture by my captives.Someone moaned softly. I spuned and gasped w

After that short meeting with Paige, I could not control my nerves. All my being told me to get on with it with or without protection. Besides, Kyle is always busy at work and I can't afford to bother him with mine. Maybe, this is for me. I should do this myself. I wasn't hurt when I visited the villa. Why should I be so scared to visit a college student's house? And i need all the information I can get as soon as possible. There's a lot at stake here, obviously.I parked my car at the entrance of this small cottage gate. I knew immediately that the estate has assured its occupants adequate safety because almost every house has this short cottage gate. I got down from my car, my phone, a polythene bag and some gloves in hand. I was hoping to see something. I just didn't know what exactly. The gate wasn't locked and there was still a car in the lot, probably hers. In the world where tinted car windows showef wealthiness, I hoped someday I'll make enough to get mine tinted and maintaine

"She's my mum and... You don't have to believe me."She stopped and I was quiet too. Thinking."Can we..."She said. "I wanna be alone. I... Can you come tomorrow? I'll talk to you tomorrow. I don't feel alright anymore."She winced."Did I say something wrong?""No, I'm just tired of this conversation.""Okay...but!"I remembered something. "Do you... hurt yourself in there?""Do I look insane to you?"She said, then yelled. "Warder! Get me out of here!"Time to go. I told myself."Okay Paige, thank you for speaking with me."The warder appeared and unchained her. Before I was done packing up she was gone. That was... breathe taking. I needed some sleep. When I got into the car, my phone beeped. It was then I realized I have spent hours in there. It's noon already, past lunchtime. Little wonder, I'm so exhausted."Kamila."He said on the other end. “Good to see you today.” I said, while she just nodded. I prayed that she would be in a good mood, but her silence spoke otherwise. I took some time to observe her before talking further. Her hair was unusually packed today, and it gave me a full view of her distressed yet stunning face. She is the real definition of beauty for ashes. Though she still had some scars on her left cheek, the redness of those scars only complemented her beauty. She didn't have any blood stain today on her body, and I wondered why.She looked…good, and that gave me enough hope.“How're you doing today?”“You've only been gone for some hours.” She said, more like a whisper, and with time I realized that was the highest she could go. Life in the prison has taken her voice, and her soul, probably. I just can't imagine…“Hope,” She called me.“Yes, Paige.”“Do you…know my mother? She yelled at me."You're crazy."I sat without thinking. When I realized what I spewed out, it was already too late because she had gone immediately cold. I wanted to apologize but i changed my mind. You don't always have to talk. I told myself. This isn't the right time to pity but to speak truth. She's really crazy."Your friends are worried about you. You think everyone in this world is against you? Well, You're not the only one who thinks that. We all have been in a cloudy weather before. What about God, Paige? I heard you were a worshipper.
