Chapter 5

“Don't ask me how my day went because it was from one hell to another.” I warned Kyle as he walked in from work that night.

“Dinner is ready.” I said soberly. “Go freshen up and let's have dinner because I'm starving.”

“Okay, wife.” He planted a soft kiss on my forehead and left. He smelled of gunpowder, not a new scent, but one that I dreaded. Can today be any better? My dear Kyle must have been in a gun battle. I hate to think that one day he might get injured. I wished I could just ask him to stop being a policeman. That wouldn't be fair to him. And fairness is all I live for.

Talking about fairness, I had the talk of my life with Mark, and he asked me to go home. There must have been an informant at the police station. I immediately suspect the man at the counter. I swear, if I had met Kyle at the counter, I never would have allowed myself to fall in love with him. Those men just aren't human. The way they treat lawyers, especial the one who sticks to the truth, is so irritating.

" You are crazy, Kamila,"Lisa said as I signed in the next morning. "You're doing this again? Macanth wouldn't let go this time.""I know "I groaned. "That's not the best way to greet a lovely friend on a Friday morning.""Well, I know for sure you won't be going out with me tonight. I just hope you don't get a heart attack when you enter your office today."My jaws dropped and I felt the tingling teary sensation beneath my eyelids."You..."I gasped."Your punishment for... He asked me to place all the uncategorized files on your desk. You see, all of us are on a half day today, thanks to you. You'll be staying in till you're done with those. ""You've got to be kidding me.""No kidding babe. This is real. Get to your office first."I turned to leave but she stopped me."But there's a silver lining in your cloud, Kamila." She smiled playfully."What again?""Linda got transferred. She's throwing a party tonight to celebrate her unexpected promotion..."What is the damned silver in thi

When I got to the police station, I saw Mark's car already parked in the garage. I prayed silently that it wouldn't be late before I reached her. If she signs those papers, then no manner of defense or evidence would be able to take her out of this. She'd probably be sentenced to death for murder or sentenced to life imprisonment. The former seems more certain."I need to see my client, Miss Kam."I said to the man who sat at the counter. He raised his eyebrows. He looked different. Not the usual fierce ones that I meet almost every time."How many people in one day would want to see her?" He said. "As far as I know, she doesn't have a lawyer yet."I took out my ID with the hope of saving myself the stress of explaining. Actually, there's nothing to explain."I need to see her now.""Okay. Follow me."I sighed. This one is better. I shouldn't hate them all. He just saved a life. The life of a criminal? My gut doesn't speak so.*He chained her hands to the table. "Five minutes. She ha

The door to my office flew open, braced myself for his words, but he was quiet. He took his seat and faced me, still silent. “I will not apologize.” I said to him as if reading his mind.“You don't have to. You are suspended." He dropped an envelope on my desk. I could not react. I just didn't know how to. “I'm sending a report to the Dean as well. You will never learn. About the case…" He trailed off and I suddenly felt happy. There's still a case. She listened to me!“I am not going to invest either my time or any of the other lawyers time on it. In fact, no one wants to take it. You'll take the case. I don't care whether you aren't a lawyer yet or not. You think you know all already, so go ahead and defend her yourself! “ He dropped the file on my table.“You have four months! You'll be off work and no pay.” He snarled. “You think she is innocent, then go ahead and defend her. I don't care how you do it, but this is a case you must win. You must!” He yelled.“Kamila Dickson, if y

" You said you wouldn't be home." He was surprised to see me at the door when he arrived and I understood. "I finally got fired!"I joked."What?!"He was still at the door and I was expecting my welcome kiss. He won't forget that, never. Or maybe tonight, because he just stood there, his mouth agap in shock."Won't you at least come in?""Oh I'm sorry. "He embraced me and kissed my forehead. I blushed."You are joking, right?"He said, already reading my mind. Was I sacked? That's what it looks like anyway."We'll gist after dinner. I made noodles and egg sauce. Go freshen up and the table will be set.""Okay babe."He winked at me and left.I sighed, remembering the man I met earlier at the library. He's not in any way like my Kyle.Kyle is more of an athlete than an ordinary man. Though, he was not spectacularly built. He was my height—five feet nine and a half inches. He weighed a hundred and fifty pounds, a galling eighty pounds more than I did, which flowed from his legs to torso a

"Hey, Paige!"I said as affectionately as I could manage. Kyle's words kept ringing in my head.No she won't bite. I noticed a fresh wound on her wrist and I also remembered that Kyle mentioned that she hurt herself."I told that idiot that I didn't want to see anyone."My little confidence evaporated. Bad morning."I'm sorry. I just needed to see you."I said, carefully. " How are you doing Paige?"She was quiet. I watched her stare at the table for a long time before I finally broke our silence."I'll be your lawyer. I was finally given the case. I just hope you will be able to trust me but I...""Did you say lawyer?""Yes. "She was quiet again.Wierd.I decided to change the topic."I never thought you would change your mind. I mean, after our meeting yesterday...""You said Hope, Mrs Hope."I laughed. "You can call me Hope. I'm not that old.""I can see that." She said flatly."What is that?" I gestured to her wrist and her countenance immediately changed. I could have heard her sw

"Kamila Dickson, from GLENWOOD. I am the defendants lawyer and I've come to search the house." I saw to the guard at the front door. He grinned as if he had been expecting me. He pass a metal detector over my body and pushed some keys on the door lock. The house...If I said magnificent, it would be an understatement. I can't search my head too much for the right words to describe a house that I have come to search. Obviously there other things to focus on.There were five other men in black in the living room. They sat on the couch, already looking expctant. I didn't have to explain myself before one of them spoke."Over here. I'll take you to his study. He was murdered there."I followed the lean blonde who had spoken on seeing me. He had this unhealthy haircut and his hair colour, reddish orange. A perfect shade of fire.I decided to ignore his hair and focus."You're are the lawyer who is finally taking the case."He said while he led me through this unending hallway."Yes.""I feel

“You didn't call me as you promised.”It was when he said it that I remember. When I left the villa, my mind was so occupied that I forgot almost everything that happened that day. All that replayed in my mind was the faces the blond made at me, how the house looked like. The awful words he said about Paige Kam. When I finally got home, I took one of my sedating drugs and slept it off. I felt that was the only way I could escape my complex reality. When I woke up, I felt better. At least. I felt a little peace. Peace enough to allow me to make breakfasts, and I occupied my mind with my favorite TV show while waiting for Kyle.I wanted to avoid giving my new job a thought. It would do nothing but kill my spirit. And now that Kyle is back, I finally regained all my lost train of thoughts.“I'm sorry I forgot.” I took his suitcase while he gave me a warm hug. I sniffed.Good, just perfume and sweat. But does that mean he didn't use the gunner? Of course no!I just delight in the pure sce

I stayed indoors for a whole week, reading books and researching. While I thought that message was a wake-up call, a proof that my gut wasn't wrong after all, Kyle asked that I quit. But obviously, I can't quit anymore. Quitting means accepting that I made a huge mistake by picking up on her case. Quitting would also mean going back to the office to beg Mark Anthony. Quitting would mean giving up on that insane and impulsive youth who deserves nothing but justice, but wouldn't even think of having it. She's probably mad. She might have lost her mind or something. She might be under the influence of something or some people. It's all so glaring now. But who would send threat letters and hide them in pebbles, so lame.Kyle didn't report the case. He felt it was too personal and too simple an issue. “At this point, you have to stay away, Kamila.” He said to be before going to bed that night, and I didn't say a word.I knew right away that he was just being impulsive. Not scared, but pro

He woke up with a kick, made by his legs. Another nightmare! He sniffed soberly and dragged himself to the bathroom to wash off the dream not only from his face but from his life. She might be missing now, but she'll be back. He told himself. He was on a compulsory leave and when he checked the time, he saw that he really needed the leave. At first when his boss asked him to stay off work until she is found he argued. To him, it was better that he was at work. He will be more miserable if he's alone without her. He and his team has worked so hard for the past two days, even at night. He settled in late the night before because he had visited a dead trail. It's always been a dead trail. He dragged himself down the stairs to the kitchen, but could not enter. Everywhere smells of her.He kicked a pillow on the rug and sat by the couch. The same way they sit every night. They prefer to sit on the rug than the couch. He sucked on a tear.“Shit…” he hissed, throwing away another pillow. He

I won't forgive myself, either. Kyle got home that night sad and distressed. It was the second night that he was going to spend without her. He had searched all the places he could think of. He had been to that address she sent to him the umpteenth time. Yet, she still was missing. He took a bottle of wine from the fridge and gulped in it. Hoping that it would ease his tension. " She's not dead. "He told himself. "It's not two days yet. I'll find her."He blamed himself severally for allowing her take up the case when he knew what danger was in it, blamed himself for ignoring his phone beep while at a rescue mission. Of course, it should have been switched off but he didn't because of his gut feeling. Yet he still failed her.The landline hung on the wall beeped and he reached for it immediately. There was an unfamiliar ID and he wouldn't have picked it if it was not for Kamila's disappearance."Hello."He rasped."Hello, Miss Dickson. I finally tried your home number today. How's everything?""It's her husband speak

I wasn't dead. My eyelids were heavy, and I was cold.it was all too dark, and I could barely see. I moved my hands, and it moved, and my legs moved too. The last I remember was that I was pushed into a vehicle, and that seemed like an eternity ago.I grunted in pain as I pushed off my bruised knees. I was an idiot. I should have waited. I should have called Kyle. He warned me not to go anywhere without him. Paige warned me too. Now I've failed her. I'm caged in here by God knows who, and I won't be able to help her out of there. What is a disaster?!Once I was on my feet, I ripped off the tape on my mouth. Did they expect me to sleep forever? Tch...I took in my surroundings. I was in a cage at one end of a closed basement, and a dim lantern on the side of the space cast just enough light to see dark walls.“Shit!” I gasped. The heat the lantern created was just too unbearable, and I thought that it was the intended torture by my captives.Someone moaned softly. I spuned and gasped w

After that short meeting with Paige, I could not control my nerves. All my being told me to get on with it with or without protection. Besides, Kyle is always busy at work and I can't afford to bother him with mine. Maybe, this is for me. I should do this myself. I wasn't hurt when I visited the villa. Why should I be so scared to visit a college student's house? And i need all the information I can get as soon as possible. There's a lot at stake here, obviously.I parked my car at the entrance of this small cottage gate. I knew immediately that the estate has assured its occupants adequate safety because almost every house has this short cottage gate. I got down from my car, my phone, a polythene bag and some gloves in hand. I was hoping to see something. I just didn't know what exactly. The gate wasn't locked and there was still a car in the lot, probably hers. In the world where tinted car windows showef wealthiness, I hoped someday I'll make enough to get mine tinted and maintaine

I don't feel alright anymore."She winced."Did I say something wrong?""No, I'm just tired of this conversation.""Okay...but!"I remembered something. "Do you... hurt yourself in there?""Do I look insane to you?"She said, then yelled. "Warder! Get me out of here!"Time to go. I told myself."Okay Paige, thank you for speaking with me."The warder appeared and unchained her. Before I was done packing up she was gone. That was... breathe taking. I needed some sleep. When I got into the car, my phone beeped. It was then I realized I have spent hours in there. It's noon already, past lunchtime. Little wonder, I'm so exhausted."Kamila."He said on the other end. Whenever he calls my name on the phone I get that he is quite serious. Actually, he rarely calls during the day."Hey."I yawned."I found some

“Good to see you today.” I said, while she just nodded. I prayed that she would be in a good mood, but her silence spoke otherwise. I took some time to observe her before talking further. Her hair was unusually packed today, and it gave me a full view of her distressed yet stunning face. She is the real definition of beauty for ashes. Though she still had some scars on her left cheek, the redness of those scars only complemented her beauty. She didn't have any blood stain today on her body, and I wondered why.She looked…good, and that gave me enough hope.“How're you doing today?”“You've only been gone for some hours.” She said, more like a whisper, and with time I realized that was the highest she could go. Life in the prison has taken her voice, and her soul, probably. I just can't imagine…“Hope,” She called me.“Yes, Paige.”“Do you…know my mother? She yelled at me."You're crazy."I sat without thinking. When I realized what I spewed out, it was already too late because she had gone immediately cold. I wanted to apologize but i changed my mind. You don't always have to talk. I told myself. This isn't the right time to pity but to speak truth. She's really crazy."Your friends are worried about you. You think everyone in this world is against you? Well, You're not the only one who thinks that. We all have been in a cloudy weather before. What about God, Paige? I heard you were a worshipper.
