"Everyone, this is Amara. She's new to the team," Lucian introduced me. I smiled smugly. They all looked extremely unimpressed. "I'm a Hale," I informed them. Multiple gasps filled the air. A few girls started whispering. How welcoming. I walked up to the groups of people and shook their hands. They were hesitant at first, but warmed up to me after a while. Most of them were kind, and a few just did not want to talk. I saw the same ginger from his office glaring at me. She whispered something to her friend beside her and they snickered. It seemed they were still acting like high schoolers. I decided to walk over to them and introduce myself, "My name is Amara, nice to meet you." They gave each other side glances and acted like I was a literal piece of shit, "I don't think we asked who you were, Amy." Amy? Really? "That's cute. The next time you try to make fun of me, make sure you have nothing in your teeth." "Bitch!" She yelped, her head covering her teeth. "Let's go Kelsey." They stormed out of the room. I waved as they exited. When I turned around, I was greeted by Gabe leaning his arm against the wall next to us. "So, what do you think?" He asked. I took a step back before responding, "It's alright. Some of these girls need an attitude check. The ginger called me Amy." He let out a laugh. "That's Rachel. She's like that sometimes. I don't know why she hates you so much already though. You've been here for like five minutes." "I caught her and Mr. Moretti sucking each other's faces off," I confessed. He gave me a knowing look before responding, "I don't know how he puts up with her. I'm surprised he hasn't killed her off yet. She doesn't really do anything anyways." Gabe and I talked for a while. He was really cool and I could see us becoming friends, but I noticed Lucian glaring at us out of the corner of my eye. L U C I A N 1 What did Gabe think he was doing? Flirting? With my assistant? He knew about the rules, but I guess he was never one to follow them anyway. I glared at them. Was she flirting back? I could feel myself heating up, so I left. I didn't want to see it anymore. I hated when people broke the rules. I got in my Mercedes and drove off without her. She could find another ride back to the apartment since she had already made so many friends. I couldn't stand the fact that she talked to other men. I had never thought that way about anyone before, but she drove me insane, and I hated that too. When I arrived at home, Sandra gave me a confused look, and I lied and told her that Amara was going to get a ride home from Gabe. I knew she could take care of herself, but the whole time I was home, I wondered if she was okay. Her stupid pretty face was distracting me from my real job. I needed to get her out of my head. A M A R A 2 H O U R S L A T E R Where the hell was he? I had been looking for Lucian for almost 20 minutes now. I called him multiple times and they all went straight to voicemail. I was walking around the building when I ran into a short woman. "Oh my god I'm sorry. I'm really distracted right now." "Don't worry about it! I'm Halle. Are you new here?" She asked cheerily. "Was it that obvious? I'm Amara," I said, reaching my hand out. She laughed and took it, "What are you doing all the way back here?" "I'm trying to find Mr. Moretti. I'm his personal assistant and he was supposed to be my ride home." She looked confused, "Mr. Moretti? He left over an hour and a half ago." My face sunk and I felt angry. "What?" I could feel myself heating up. "Half an hour ago?" She nodded, "I'm sure someone here would be willing to take you home." She checked her watch. "I've got to go. It was nice meeting you, Amara. I hope to see you more often." I stood there speechless. Why the fuck would he leave me here? Did he forget about me? I was angry, but I felt really fucking hurt too. Being left behind was something I was too used to, and that feeling sucked. I put on my facade and walked back out to the group. I didn't want their help. I would embarrass myself by asking for a ride or saying my own boss left me by myself. I waved them all goodbye and walked outside of the building. The maps app on my phone showed that there was a bus station about two miles from here. It looked like I would be taking a walk. I trudged along the road, my feet dragging along with me. The sun was starting to set and I was getting real tired. Eventually, I was able to see the bus stop in the distance. I sighed in relief at the sight of it. When I arrived, I sat on the cold, metal bench with my arms crossed. Even though I was wearing a flannel and sweatpants, I was starting to get cold. The wind was blowing hard. I pulled out my phone again and checked to see when the next bus was coming. It looked like I was going to be stuck here for another 45 minutes. A strike of thunder sounded around me, and raindrops started falling. In this moment, I let the tears fall. Cupping my hands on my face, I cried. For the first time in a long fucking time, I cried. L U C I A N She wasn't back yet? It had been almost three hours. I was slowly pacing in the front hallway. Did no one give her a ride? Did she even ask? Could something have happened to her? I decided to call Gabe. "What's up boss man? You're calling late," he stated, pointing out the obvious. "Have you seen Amar- Miss Hale? She's not here," I asked, trying not to seem like I cared. "Um- No. I thought she left with you, Lucian. Why wouldn't she leave with you?" He asked, confused. Fuck. "I left without telling her," I admitted. "That's a dick move, man. I can ask around but it looks like everyone but her is still here." "Ok. Let me know wha-" The sound of a door opening filled my ears. Immediately, I hung up the phone. She was soaking wet. The once grey sweatpants she was wearing turned dark while the sleeves of her flannel clung onto her arms. Her mascara dripped down her cheeks, reminding me of the night we first met. She looked broken. + "Amara I-" I started. She stormed past me. "Don't." Sandra entered the room with an extremely disappointed look on her face. "With all do respect sir, she deserved better than that." Shaking her head, she exited the corridor. I sighed. Fuck.A M A R AI leaned my head against the shower tile. I understood that part of the reason I ended up soaking wet tonight when I got home was because I was too stubborn to ask for a ride, but for him to leave me alone? That's fucking low. Sighing, I stepped out of the shower before I would start to look like a prune. As I started unwrapping my towel, I realized that I forgot clothes. After rewrapping my towel, I looked outside the bathroom door to make sure no one was coming. It seemed clear, so I ran on my tiptoes to my room. I immediately shut the door and sighed when I reached my room, but when I turned around, I was greeted with Mr. Moretti himself. "What are you doing in here?" I asked sternly. "I came to talk," he said without keeping focus on my eyes.I pouted my way over to the boxes on my floor and took a pair of pajamas to my closet. Quickly, I changed and came out to face him. His gaze never left me once. "Are you done?" I crossed my arms over my chest. "If you want to
A M A R A"Miss Hale, are you ready to go?" A man asked on the other side of my door. That didn't sound like Lucian."I'm his driver. My name is Kade. He's waiting for you outside," he followed up."Alright, I'll be out in a second," I said as I grabbed my suitcase by the handle. I figured I could dress casual for the plane ride and change when we arrived to wherever we were staying. I rolled my suitcase out, dress in hand. Kade took the luggage from me and put it in the back of the car. I opened the side door and sat down on the black leather seat. We weren't in his Mercedes anymore. "Did Kate treat you well?" He asked, not bothering to look up from his phone. "Yes. She was very professional," I complimented."Good."The rest of the ride was silent. He tapped away at his phone for literally the whole ride. Who did he have to be texting? His head had to be hurting. After what seemed like forever, we arrived at his jet. The flight to New York took about two hours. I was exhauste
A M A R AFrankie, (if that was even his name), said that he would be carrying out his plan at eleven. It was currently 10:30 and I was still freaking the fuck out. I didn't have a gun or any weapon of the sort. I tried to find Gabe, but he was nowhere to be found. I caught Frankie watching me from time to time, so I knew telling Lucian was out of the picture. The only other idea that came to my mind was using the pickpocketing skills I learned in Italy. Some of the men in the room had their guns strapped on the back of their belts or suspenders. I walked over to a group of men and pretended to drop something out of my purse. "I'm so sorry, I'll be out of your way soon. I just dropped my bobby pin," I lamely said. The man I was in front of didn't even acknowledge me. I got up and quickly swiped the gun out of his holster. I checked the time. There were only five minutes to spare. I noticed that Frankie had his eyes completely on Lucian. It was about to happen. I saw him reach
A M A R A"You know where my family is?" I interrogated. The man named Laurens nodded. "We might. Casey, Esme, Dannika, and I recently attended business in Italy. When we arrived, we were greeted by a man named Erik. Before Erik left us, he received a call, and the contact on the phone read Giovanni Hale."Casey cut in, "We know it's a long shot, but Erik works in the underground fighting business, and it's highly unlikely that he would receive a call from someone who wasn't involved in the same business."I could feel myself get light headed. All this time I had thought that my family was dead. I never imagined to hear that someone thought they were alive. Soon, I could see my vision turning black, and my body fell to the floor. "Amara?" I assumed it was Lucian speaking. He was shaking my shoulders lightly. My eyes felt heavy, and my head, fuzzy. "Hey, you need to get up." He snapped his fingers over my face. Groggily, I sat up off the floor, "What the fuck happened?""You pass
L U C I A N"Where is she?" I slammed my fist on the receptionist's desk. "S-shes in surgery r-right now sir. We c-can't let you see h-her," she stammered over her words. "The driver is in room 26 if you would like to see him w-while you wait."I didn't say anything more to her and made my way to Kade's room. He was sitting in bed fiddling with his fingers. There was a small bandaid above his left eyebrow and he had a sling on his right arm. Other than that, it looked like he wasn't even hit. "What the fuck happened, Kade?"He looked like he was about to break down. "Our light was green. I was the first car in our lane and I went. Some guy ran a red and hit Amara on impact," he said, trembling. "It wasn't your fault Kade. Is the man who hit you here? I need to speak with him.""I don't know. I think he got out of his car and ran after the accident. I think it was on purpose."Before I could respond I heard yelling from the hallway, "Page Dr. Adams now!" A nurse ran by Kade's door.
L U C I A NTHREE WEEKS LATERIt had been three weeks since the accident. Three weeks of absolute torture. Except I wouldn't admit that to anyone else. I was in and out of the hospital visiting her. Today was the last day I could come in before I had to return to work. I rented out her floor of the hospital so that there were no headaches. Amara had been taken off of the ventilator. The doctors said that she was recovering extraordinarily fast and that it was a miracle she had made it this far. She was actually expected to wake up soon. I pulled a chair up next to her and rested my chin on my hands. I felt strange looking at her. I noticed she was starting to stir. "Amara?" I reached in and grabbed her hand. Her head turned to face me, "Hm?"Holy shit. She was awake. "Oh my God .Amara you're awake."Her ice blue eyes opened and looked at me, "Lucian? What are you doing here?" She sniffled a little bit. I couldn't help but crack a smile. "You hate me. Why would you visit?""No Ama
A M A R AONE WEEK LATER I was finally getting discharged from this hospital. Lucian had been acting different. I couldn't put my finger on it, but there was something weird going on with his moods. I put on one of the casual outfits Sandra picked out for me and walked out to meet Lucian. He was screaming at someone on the phone when I saw him. "Well what's the language then? We need to decipher this bullshit." He was pacing in the hallway. There was some mumbling over the line and Lucian spoke again, "Arabic? Why the fuck would they send us a language we wouldn't understand?" He turned his head and spotted me, "I need to go. We'll talk later."Little fact about me, I'm half Arabic and half Italian. My mother was Arabic, and I carried most of her traits. It was ironic and seemed a little weird that whatever they were talking about related to that. "I speak Arabic," I admitted. He raised his eyebrows, "Perfect."He lead me to the elevator. "Did you hit your head?" I asked him.
A M A R ALucian still hadn't found me. I wondered if he was even looking. Surely he would've got to me by now if he was?I guess he had never met Ashley. She would be next on his list to check, though. It was a Monday, and since I wasn't his personal assistant anymore, I had to sit around and watch Ashley head off to work. "I'll see you later babe," she squeezed my hand and left at around 7:30 a.m. At about 8:30 I was starting to get extremely bored. I did her dishes, vacuumed her carpet, and even washed her bedding. I didn't know what else to do. I knew I wasn't going to be able to hide forever. If Lucian was looking for me, he would probably be on his way here in the next hour or so. I left a note for Ashley on the counter and decided to be the bigger person. As much as I didn't want to, I called Kade and had him take me back home. "Mr. Moretti has been worried sick, Miss Hale," Kade informed me. "I'm sure he has," I groaned. "I may be a lot of things Miss Hale, but I'm not a
