Night stopped, his eyes widening. He was probably remembering that he’d found me tied up and about to have everything stolen from me just a month before. Had it really only been a month? It felt like a lifetime to me.

Night closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths. His hands opened and closed as he regained control of himself. When he opened his eyes again, there was an apology in their depths.

“I understand,” he said, his voice still so deep, so growly. “I’m sorry I didn’t take that into account.” He released a tight breath and ran a hand through his hair. “I won’t—”

“No.” I cut him off, shaking my head. “I didn’t tell you that so you’d stop, Night. I just wanted to make sure that…” I hesitated, my face hot. “That I could take all of you.”

Night paused for a few seconds, and then he laughed. When he looked at me again, his eyes had softened, and I gulped. I knew for sure that I was in love with him—that this was right even though it shouldn’t be.
