I had thought she would put up a fight—that she would yell at me for scaring Jasper off. I expected her to call me an asshole, the way she always did. I was ready to let her rip into me and get it all out of her system before I looked her in the eye and told her that she was mine, that she was always meant to be mine, and that I wanted her to stay with me. But I should have expected her to surprise me.

She had come to me, her skirt lifting slightly in the cool breeze, making me harder than I’d ever known I could be in my jeans. She drew close to me, smelling delicious and warm and so, so perfect, and brought me down for a kiss.

And the kiss was everything. The minute her lips touched mine, the breath left my lungs, my heart pounding loudly against the palm that she pressed there. Each beat was a single word—Mate. It echoed over and over in my head, through my blood, carried in every cell of my body. I pulled her against me, unwilling to let either of us breathe without the other.
