I swallow hard and nod at him. “Thank you. And my child? What about the baby?” I ask, my hands clenched into fists, my heart racing. “Please tell me they're okay.”

“Your child is fine as well,” he says, looking at me. “But you have to understand, she suffered blows and punches to her stomach, and that's too much for a newly forming pregnancy. You're lucky we arrived on time, or it would have been too late.”

Relief washes over me. “So the baby is okay?” I ask, nodding to myself. “And the mother?”

“They're both stable for now, but your wife and baby have been through a lot. We're doing everything possible to ensure their recovery. Your wife is resting, but she's still under close observation. The baby's heartbeat is weak, and we will do e
