Alys heaved a great sigh as the events of that day came back to her. It was a day she will always remember…
It was early morning and the snow had finally stopped. It had been one of the biggest snow storms they had seen in a long time in Hope Falls, with almost 3 feet of snow falling over night and Drew had been on call for snow removal that week. He was the owner of a small landscape company that also did snow removal during the winter months. The main shop with his office and equipment was just on the outskirts of town, so he had to leave very early to meet the other crew member on call and divide up the plowing jobs for the morning so everything would be clear for people heading to work.
Alys heard a buzzing and rolled over to check the time, it was only 4 am. Her alarm shouldn’t be going off for another hour. Groaning she heard the buzzing again and realized the buzzing noise was her phone ringing and she quickly picked up.
“Hello?” Alys answered, voice rough from sleep.
“Oh Hey Aly, sorry for waking you. Has Drew left yet or did he sleep in again?” Stevens voice came through the line.
“Hey Steven, Drew left over an hour ago to meet you. He hasn’t arrived yet?” Alys asked, starting to feel more awake as an uneasy feeling came over her.
“Shit, okay I’ll drive towards your house and see if maybe he got stuck. You know he’s too stubborn to call for back up.” Steven said with forced cheerfulness before hanging up.
An hour later, Alys was getting ready to head out to open her coffee shop downtown when she heard a knock on her door. Her heart dropped to the bottom of her stomach, no one would be just stopping by at this time of the morning, she slowly made her way to the front door.
Opening the door slowly she recognized the two men standing on her porch. It was two of the local police officers who always stopped by her shop at the end of their nightshift for coffee and muffins on their way home.
“No…no….no…no…” Alys’s heart stopped and she dropped to her knees as the to officers took off their hats and knelt down beside her.
“We are so sorry Aly. We are here to deliver some bad news. It’s Drew he was killed this morning in a car accident.” Officer Cody stated as calmly as he could, as he watched Aly sit there and stare off into space shaking her head. He let the news sink in for several minutes before asking “Do you have any questions?”
“How?” Aly slowly looked up at Cody as her eyes welled up with tears
“He hit black ice and his truck spun out of control sending him crashing drivers side into a tree. He died on impact. Aly is there someone we can call for you to come over and be with you?” Officer Cody asked watching her carefully as she started to sob burying her face in her hands.
Once she started she couldn’t stop sobbing as her world came crashing down around her. Drew was her rock, the one who kept her grounded. She didn’t know how she was going to go on without him. The pain in her chest felt like her heart was shattering into a million pieces, it became hard to breath as an immense pressure was building up inside as the sobs increased in intensity. What was she going to do? Why did he leave her? How could this be happening?
Cody watched as Aly broke down in front of him and turned to his partner Mike. “Can you get the desk Sargent to call Aly’s mom and have her come over?”
“Sure thing.” He said as he stepped into the living room to call in the request on his radio.
“Aly? Aly, are you with me? We are bringing your mom over, how about we get you on the couch so she can make it in the front door?” Cody asked softly, Alys nodded through her sobs and Cody gently guided her up from the floor and into the living room and seated her on the sofa. He then grabbed one of the many blankets draped over the furniture and wrapped it around her shoulders and sat down in the chair beside her. Mike nodded in confirmation that Alys’s mom would be informed and over shortly. All they could do is sit beside her and watch her break down.
About 15 minutes had passed and the front door flung open and Ms. Clary Russel, Alys’s mom, rushed in.
“Oh Alys!” She exclaimed when she saw Alys on the couch then she swept in and enveloped Alys in a hug. Alys started sobbing even harder in her mothers arms. “Why mom? Why did it have to be him? Why did he leave me?” She asked choking over her words as tears streamed down her face.
“Oh hunny, he didn’t do it on purpose. You know he would never have left you. Accidents happen, but he wouldn’t want you to break down. Be strong for Drew.” Clary stroked Alys’s hair from her face and although both women had tears rolling down their cheeks Clary’s words seemed to help calm Alys a bit. She knew her mom was right Drew would have done everything to come home if he could have and he would want Alys to stand strong for him.
Cody cleared his throat and both women jumped, startled, forgetting that there was other people in the house. “Sorry to startle you ma’am” Cody said, “but I will leave you with my card here and if you have any further questions please feel free to call me.”
He handed his card to Clary who gave him a small smile and a nod, then he turned to Alys, "if there is anything I can do for you Aly, please call." he gave her a gentle smile and light squeeze on her shoulder before nodding to Mike and they both left the house.

It has only been a couple months since that day and Alys was at work, lost in her own mind thinking about those events. She was starting to think about it less and less, but in those quiet moments, something would always make her remember. Today she was baking his favourite muffins. Shaking her head to clear it she heard the bell of the door opening as Mike and Cody came walking in.
“Hey, my two favourite first customers.” Alys smiled up at them as they approached the counter. She already had their order ready, two large coffees and two morning glory muffins.
“Awww, we are your favourites?” Mike asked, “would you give your favourite of the two favourites your recipe for his wife yet?” He tried again for the thousandth time.
“Sorry Mike, tell Leah if I give her my recipe I’ll lose one of my favourite customers, that’s just not good business” Alys winked at him as Cody pulled out his card to pay
“What makes you think your her favourite of us anyways?” Cody joked, “I am obviously her favourite. Right Aly?” He gave her his big brown puppy dog eyes and a sweet smile.
“You are both equally my favourite first of the day customers” she replied smiling at both of them, her green eyes twinkling with laughter as the two groaned at her.
“How diplomatic of you. Well got to go, we will see you later Alys.” Mike said as he picked up the tray with their order.
“I’ll be right there Mike.” Cody said to him and turned back to Alys running his hand through his short blonde hair while giving her a nervous smile, “Alys I’ve been meaning to ask you but the time just never felt right. But would you go to dinner with me one night? Anywhere you like, your choice.” He asked her with a hopeful glint in his eyes.
“Cody, that’s very sweet of you, but I don’t think I’m ready yet.” Alys responded with a sigh.
“It’s been over a year Aly. You have to start living again, you can’t just go through life like a machine, waking up, going to work, and going home.” He gripped the counter tightly then closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “Well the offer is there, for when you are ready.”
Alys just nodded not knowing what to say and watched him turn around and walk out. She knew he had had a crush on her in high school but she didn’t think that he still had any feelings for her. He had dated on and off with a few other women but they never lasted with him. He was a good looking guy, he had been on the football team in school, which was not exactly her type. She was more of the creative variety and had been part of drama and nature clubs and spent her spare time reading and hanging out with her friends. He would go to all the coolest parties and hang out with the other jocks. Sighing she set her thoughts on Cody aside and continued on with her work.
She had always dreamed of owning her own coffee and book shop and after high school she took some business courses online then bought the old book shop on the main street. After putting some work into it she was able to convert the big old used book shop into a coffee and book shop, where she had shelves of used books available in and around the front and near the back she had taken out a store room to put in the kitchen and the counter for her coffee shop. A few old comfy chairs were placed around either in pairs or alone with small coffee tables where people could sit together and chat or sit alone and read a book while they drank their coffee. She also offered some baked goods and a couple soups and sandwiches on her menu, Alys loved to cook. Her shop was named after herself Alys’s Cafe, and it became quite popular with the town and was a hot spot for teens since she offered free wifi and the only place that served a decent latte in Hope Falls.
Looking at the clock Alys saw that one of her main employees should be arrivingsoon to help her with the morning rush. As if thinking it summoned her, she heard the bell ring and in walked Hannah. Hannah White was a couple years younger then Alys and had been working for her for a few years now. She was one of her most trusted employees and was in charge when Alys wasn’t there.
“Good morning sunshine!” She sang as she walked through the shop, her blonde hair in its signature high pony swinging as she did a final sashay to the counter. “How are we this morning?”
Alys couldn’t help but smile at her energetic attitude. “Good, but you will never guess who just asked me out on a date” Alys stated with a look of bewilderment
“Who?” Squealed Hannah always the one for gossip.
“Cody Smith” she let the name hang in the air, waiting for Hannah’s reaction.
“No way!” She exclaimed and walked towards the back to hang up her coat and change into her work shoes, “He’s so dreamy, tell me everything” she hollered back at Alys.
“Well it was a little weird, at first when he asked me he sounded sweet, but when I told him I didn’t think I was ready yet he started to get mad and told me I needed to move on from Drew’s death.” Alys told her thinking over his words as she said them and frowned.
“Aw, Aly I know it’s hard hun. But we do want to see you come out of your shell again. You look so lost sometimes.” Hannah came over and put her arm around Alys’s shoulder and leaned her head up against hers. “That being said you have to do what feels right for you.”
The bell rang again as the first few high school students came in to get their caffein fix before school started.
“So it begins!” Hannah said dramatically, breaking the sweet moment and going to the cash to take the first orders.
The day went by quickly and Hannah headed out an hour early to meet up with some of her friends. Alys didn’t mind closing up by herself, with only an hour left before closing it was usually pretty slow, so she used the time to get some of the closing jobs done early then she could lock up sooner. She was wiping down the tables and putting away books that people left out when she heard the bell ring again, looking at her watch she saw there was only 5 minutes until she closed.
“Sorry, we only have 5 minutes left but I do still have some baked goods and of course we always have coffee.” She smiled up at the customer as he walked in to view and she had to take a breath. He had to be the most gorgeous man she had ever seen. Drew was handsome but also homely in his own rough and tumble way. But this man was tall probably over 6 feet which was a good half foot or so taller than Alys, he was very solidly built, with a well groomed beard, his deep chocolate brown hair was styled in a fade, and his blue piercing eyes gazed at Alys. She could see tattoos peaking up over the collar of his white button-up which barely contained the muscles underneath and she thought if he moved in the wrong, or right, way it would just rip right off him. She blushed as she realized she was giving him a once over and when she met his eyes again he was smiling as if he knew exactly what she had been doing.
“Hi, are you Alys McKenzie?”
It was almost 5 am and Aiden was running his fingers through his hair as he sat at his desk going over the notes for his meeting that morning. He had a busy day as head of his family’s company and he ended up staying all night in his office. They owned a few construction company’s as well as a couple architectural firms in Wakerton City. Wakerton was a well developed city that served a lot of smaller communities around it and was the biggest city within a 5 hour drive, basically in the middle of nowhere in North Eastern Canada. It was also how his family helped support their pack. There weren’t a lot of werewolf packs in Canada but theirs, Blue Lake Pack, was one of the biggest on the east coast. He was just about to close his laptop and grab a quick shower to freshen up when suddenly he felt a stabbing pain in his chest that knocked the wind right out of him. Gasping for air he looked frantically around trying to figure out what was happening, he could feel his beast inside him try
Alys woke up feeling excited. She couldn’t explain why but her heart was racing and she really wanted to see Aiden again. Suddenly she felt a wave of guilt flow over her. It had still only been a couple months since Drew died, how could she be this excited about going to dinner with someone else? Hadn’t she just told Cody she wasn’t ready yet? Her thoughts started to conflict in her mind and she decided to jump in the shower to calm down and sooth the racing thoughts she had going through her head. When she got out she was already feeling a lot better. Besides it’s not as if it was a date, she is going on a business meeting. Which got her thinking, what did a big business firm like Aiden’s want with Drew’s small landscaping company? If they wanted to buy it, how did she feel about that? She knew she couldn’t keep it forever, she already had a lot on her plate with running her coffee shop and she knew that Steven didn’t have enough money to buy it from her. She guessed she would just h
Aiden was glad that when he took Alys’s hand she seemed to calm down instantly and took comfort in his hold. That made him and his wolf almost purr in contentment. She may not know what the bond is but she’s definitely feeling it. He thought to himself happier than he has felt in a long time. When he first saw her walking towards him in the parking lot her scent engulfed him and settled him immediately. He loved her scent. Then when he saw her lilac silk blouse that gently flowed over the curves on her chest he almost lost some control. She was stunning and Aiden had a new favourite colour. The dinner seemed to be moving well and Aiden was determined to make her feel comfortable and ignored all of the attention the other women were showing him. As an Alpha male most females were drawn to that even if they were human. It was worse for other wolves, since female wolves new that he was an Alpha and unmated. So Aiden got good at brushing off unwanted attention.Alys brought up the busines
Aiden really had had no intention of leaving the shop while she was still here, and had spent the morning texting back and forth with his father and Jax. He felt the need to protect Alys and wanted Jax to get out here as soon as he could. Especially after learning that Cody was a local police officer and he missed his shift last night. He knew already that’s it was Cody who did the damage to Alys’s car. He could smell that rogue all over it and those scratches had been made by claws. He had even gone as far as peeing around the car, but Aiden didn’t want Alys to know that. It had been meant as a warning from Cody to him. He was trying to tell Aiden that Alys was his. He was glad that Hannah had made Alys go home. Aiden could tell that she was just holding on by a thread and wanted to get her somewhere she felt safe and comfortable. Aiden was glad that the shop had been untouched and hoped that Cody had just gone after Alys’s car.As they pulled up to her house everything looked norma
Aiden woke suddenly to banging on the door. He looked around and grabbed his phone looking at the time. It was 7 am and he had 10 missed messages from Jax starting last night. He heard a quiet moan beside him and realized that he had fallen asleep with Alys last night after their bath. He had forgotten all about Jax. The banging started again and Alys made another noise. ‘Ok, Ok, I am coming I’m sorry I was helping Alys and we ended up falling asleep. Just give me a minute! And stop that banging you will wake her up.’ Aiden linked Jax, as he slowly crept out of the bed trying to keep from disturbing the heavenly woman.‘About time you responded, it felt like I’ve been trying to link a rock. And you didn’t respond to my texts.’ Jax whined‘Jeez you sound like a petulant child. Or a needy girlfriend.’ Aiden grumbled back.He threw on jeans and a t-shirt and headed down the stairs to the door to the hallway letting in a pouting Jax.“Nice to see you too.” Jax said, suddenly grinning wide
They climbed into Aiden’s jeep and Alys took a deep breath. She couldn’t believe they were on their way to her moms house. What was she going to think of her daughter bringing a new guy home already? Why did Aiden want to meet her so much? He asked her to trust him and deep down she knew that she could with every ounce of her being, but how did she know? There were a lot of things going on and she was ready for some answers, she knew Aiden had some of those answers but they needed to talk to her mom first, does that mean her mom knows something about what’s going on as well? Is she the only one who is clueless? Her thoughts swirled around in her head as they drove down the road. Almost too soon they pulled into the driveway of Alys’s childhood home and Alys immediately knew she wanted, no, needed to know everything. They parked the Jeep and Aiden hopped out and walked around to open the door for her, together they walked up the front steps. Aiden took her hand and rubbed the back of
Aiden was amazed by how well his incredible mate was taking all of this, how did he get to be so lucky. He had been worried that she would have shut down or even refused to listen. Or worse told him to get out and called him completely crazy, but she didn’t do any of those she took in all the information calmly and with grace and was even was able to joke about it. She was truly a wonder to behold.“Well, next I would love to bring you home with me.” Aiden said with a hopeful glint in his eyes.“Home with you? When?” Alys looked startled at the suggestion.“Honestly, I was hoping as soon as possible.” Aiden told her.“I think this is my cue to check on things in the kitchen, give you two a moment.” Clary stood up and walked out of the room. Leaving Aiden and Alys to talk alone.“I assumed after all this you would have already guessed that you would come back with me to my pack. You can’t be a Luna from 3 hours away.” Aiden tried to joke but Alys had a frown on her face as she processe
Alys woke up a little confused. She was in her old bedroom and she felt like a weight was pressing down on her. Then she realized there was a weight pressing down on her. It was Aiden. They were completely entangled in each other, she was curled up against his chest his hard muscles rippling underneath her fingers, his heavy arm wrapped around her waist holding her tight against him his other across her back his hand resting in her hair, their legs intertwined around one another. Alys thought that it should be uncomfortable, but sleeping next to him completely entwined, was the most comfortable she had ever been. She couldn’t help but think of cuddling with Drew. They would start out cuddled in the typical big spoon little spoon but eventually one of them would get hot or uncomfortable and would roll over and they would end up sleeping on opposite sides of the bed. But being here wrapped up in Aiden, surrounded by his delicious cinnamon scent, felt so natural. Alys’s eyes roamed acro
David and Clary stayed for another week after the ceremony. Being that they were True Mates, chosen for each other by the goddess, David was able to mark Clary tying their souls together. She would take on his longevity. She would never have a wolf but she would at least live as long as he does. Alys remembered reading that in the book she had gotten from Killian, Dr.Clarke asked to borrow it. It was hard for Alys to say goodbye to her mom. They had never been very far from each other. They promised to set up regular times to video chat every week. They drove with them to the airport and Alys stood waving for as long as she could. “Come on love, lets go home.” Aiden wrapped her in his arms and spun her around making her squeal. “Can we stop to get something to eat? I am starving and I could definitely eat a big delicious hamburger right now.” Alys’s stomach grumbled as she climbed into the car and Aiden chuckled. “I guess we better feed you since even your stomach is growling at me.
Aiden saw Alys start to get pale and knew it was time to bring her to the clearing for her first shift. He already had Thomas bring some blankets and a light t-shirt out to the clearing he picked for them to provide some comfort. He saw the other young pups gather a parent and go off towards their chosen part of the forest. Aiden looked around and made eye contact with Sara who nodded. She gathered everyone to give some final words of encouragement to Alys.“Don’t be overthinking it Lass, ye’re goin’ tae be great. It’ll be over in no time and we’ll be running through the woods with ye.” David gave her a great big squeeze, then handed her over to her mom to hug too.“Thanks dad.” She said to him, while hugging her mom tightly.“You are going to be amazing, don’t even worry about it. I can’t wait to see your wolf I hope she’s got red fur like your hair that would be fantastic!” Sara piped in cheerfully, making Alys laugh a little. Killian gave her shoulder a squeeze.“I’ve got nothing,
The morning and afternoon flew by as they spent most of it greeting the arriving Alpha’s and making sure they found their rooms to get changed and settled before the festivities in the evening. Before she knew it Alys was in Sara’s suite along with Clary and Lilly getting ready together for the ceremony. Clary was dressed in a floor length midnight blue sheath gown with quarter length lace sleeves and a v-neckline. She did her hair in a simple French twist, she looked amazing. Lilly was in a very expensive cream pant suit, but the top went down to the floor and swept back revealing the soft flowing pants underneath. It was simple yet elegant. Sara was dazzling in her red satin gown and her hair was curled and flowing freely, with a sexy smoky eye and matching red lipstick. Sara had just put the finishing touches to Alys’s hair which was pulled into a side braid on one side with the other side curled and cascading over her shoulder, Alys had already done her make up with a soft natural
It was finally the morning of the ceremony. Alys couldn’t decide if she was more nervous for her first shift or the ceremony itself. She had never been one for the spotlight so the idea of speaking in front of so many people made butterflies turn in her stomach. At least her first shift she would be in a quiet place, apart from everyone else with Aiden.Alys had woken up early, she had felt a strange itching sensation all over her body, she couldn’t get comfortable so she hopped in the shower hoping that would ease it.‘Why are you up so early love?’ Aiden linked her.‘I got woken up by this intense itchy feeling, I was hoping the shower would help. It just seems to be getting worse though.’ Alys told him, she had been using her loofa to scrub her entire body trying to ease the uncomfortable sensations.‘It’s your body getting ready for your shift tonight, it will probably come and go t
Alys was having a great time at the spa. When they arrived they found out that Aiden had booked the entire building just for them. First they went in to a steam room to relax and then hot showers, followed by soothing full body massages, a sushi lunch catered by her favourite restaurant, and finally finished with full manicures and pedicures. The ladies all spent the day laughing and chatting. It was nice to be able to just relax. Alys had started worrying again about her upcoming shift which would happen after the ceremony, when the moon was at its highest. Tonight it would be about 11:30pm when it reached its peak, and being May, the weather was supposed to be perfect. Two other pups were getting their wolves tonight as well as they celebrated their 18th birthdays that month. It was tradition for the shifting wolves to go to the edge of the forest for their first shift. Following the shift, which apparently only took around 15 minutes the first time, the pack would join together for
After the chaos of everything that happened to Alys and Aiden and the Blue Lake Pack. It felt like having the ceremony only a few weeks later was perfect timing. Everyone was getting excited, unmated wolves were hoping to meet their mates in the guests from other packs, the kitchen staff were kept busy with the preparations and the warriors were doing extra training to make sure security would be flawless. Aiden wasn’t taking any chances. As one of the biggest and more richer packs around they had invited a lot of people. Alphas and their Beta’s and mates would be coming and usually they would bring a couple warriors with them as well during travel. There were guest quarters for visiting warriors in the warrior building, and usually there was friendly competitions before the ceremony. The visiting Alpha’s and Beta’s would of course be put in the guest suites. Aiden spent the mornings with Alys and the afternoons working from his office. Jax was sent every other day to the city to set
Alys took almost an hour to figure out what she wanted to wear. She didn’t want to give the wrong impression. She finally decided on a simple white blouse, black pants, flats, no jewellery except her necklace and ring from Aiden and her hair in a simple ponytail. She was so nervous she didn’t think she would be able to eat anything, she didn't feel ready to face the pack for breakfast. “You have no reason to hide, they will respect you no matter what your decision, love. It will be ok.” Aiden told her as he finished putting on his usual button up and dress pants. “I am not even officially the luna yet. I don’t want want to start out wrong.” Alys worried for the hundredth time. Aiden just smiled softly at her and pulled her into a hug. “Again, it’s going to be ok. You will have me and my parents there with you. They will see us as a complete unit, it’s not you alone.” He reassured her again and kissed her on her nose. “Now lets go get you some food, because if your stomach growls in
The next couple days were pure bliss. Sara almost ambushed Alys the morning after the picnic, Jax had let slip he had picked up a ring for Aiden and she had been dying to see it, Killian was there to and he groaned as Sara gushed over the ring giving him pointed looks. After breakfast Aiden went with her to spend the morning at her moms. Aiden decided that this time he was going to take some more time from work and spend it with Alys. He took her around the pack and introduced her to more of the pack members. Alys got to see what an amazing Alpha he was. He took the time to greet members and listen to them when they had something to say. He knew every warrior by name, as for the rest of the pack if he didn’t know someones name he made sure to ask and would try to remember for next time. He showed her all his favourite places on the grounds and even showed her the maps of the property, and went over the different business they owned and where. Alys was surprised at the size of their rea
They ended up at a very expensive large boutique shop that sold all manner of dresses for every event out there. Again Alys wondered what a place like this was doing in a small city like Wakerton. Inside they were greeted pleasantly by a pretty young lady and Alys noticed for the first time she could smell someone, she could even tell that she was a wolf. The lady smiled broadly and welcomed them into the store and led them to an extravagant seating area with big comfy white couches surrounding a very modern glass coffee table and brought them all sparkling wine and glasses. The store was elegant it was all white and had big floor to ceiling sections of mirror perfectly placed for both lighting and decor. She brought Alys to the display room to go through a few styles and colours so she could pull some selections. Alys told her she wanted simple and elegant and if possible silver or soft purples. The lady, she introduced herself as Samantha, winked and told her to wait in a very large
