Slamming my hand on my blaring alarm, I lazily stood up from the bed and I felt a pain shoot through my body but seeing that if I didn't stand up that time I'd be late for work. Dragging my feet, I went into the bathroom to do my morning business. By the time I came out, I heard my phone ringing. Walking over to the table near my bed where I had placed it, I saw a strange number and acting according to my subconscious I answered but no one answered."Hello. Who is this?" I asked but still no response. "Hey, if you aren't going to talk, I'm hanging up in three," I said already getting annoyed. "One, two, the....""Hi, Lottie." a familiar cheery male's voice came in."Xavier? Is that you?" I asked unsurely."You sure have a retentive memory," he said."Xavier!" I screamed with joy."Yeah." he chuckled over the phone."It's been a long time. How have you been?""Great. I'm so happy to hear your voice.""I'm also very excited. I can't stop to think that you'll ever stop to give me a call.""Don't be like that. I've always wanted to but......""Yeah, yeah, I get it. You've been busy." I started as I placed the phone on the loudspeaker and began dressing for work. "But still this is your first time calling since you traveled for how many years?""Char, don't be harsh.....""Ow...For two years and six months, if my calculations are right.""I'm sorry, I know I haven't had the time for you guys.""Now you know." I pointed out."And I also know work can never be an excuse between friends. I'll make sure to make it up to you.""Promise?""Promise.""You are forgiven," I said and he laughed lightly."So how's Diane?""Oh, oh, oh." I laughed. "I see that feeling that you have for her is still ignited within you.""Lottie, don't take the words from my mouth. I only asked after her," he said and even though we were miles away from each other I could sense him beaming."Oh, ok. My sincere apologies. Diane is equally doing great.""Just great?""Yeah?" I was confused and realization dawned on me. "I'm sorry, when I say she's doing great, it means she is doing better than I am.""Lottie, I don't understand you.""Well...Diane traveled.""Travelled? To where?""Why are you so worried when I am the one who is meant to be because my best friends aren't here with me." I pouted as I picked up my phone and went out of the room to the kitchen."I'm sorry but when did she travel and to where?""Calm down lover boy. It is not like she is gone forever it is for a year and she left just last week." I chuckled as I took out the peanut butter and dropped the phone on the kitchen table."A year? Where on earth did she travel to?""London.""What? London?""Hey, enough of the questions what's the problem?""Nothing, I'm just surprised.""Wait....." I paused as I placed the sandwich on the table. "Aren't you also in London? Oh my. You could get to see her anytime, a phone call will do.""Lottie. I'm not in London. I traveled to Africa a month back for an important business that would take my time." he said, regret lacing his cheerful tone."You have no other choice but to wait till you finish your work." I giggled grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge before settling to eat."Is she over with the girlfriend agency thingy?""Yeah." I nodded while munching my food and he sighed in relief. "Wait a minute, don't tell me you were thinking that she went over there for it?""No." hints of sadness and despair showed in his voice as he spoke."Okay." I giggled and got back to my food."Anyway, how's Dave?" he asked and I forced the half-chewed sandwich down my throat."I don't know," I said feeling a bit sad at the turn of events between Dave and me."What do you mean by 'I don't know.'""Well, we are no longer together.""No longer together? I thought you both were blinded with love.""I had also thought so but how can't he believe me this last time? I thought trust existed in our relationship?" I ranted angrily."Woah, babe. Calm down.""I'm sorry." I bent my head as tears threatened to fall."You need not be. Even though I don't know what happened between you two but.....it must be for the best, it isn't like I ever liked him," he said and I smiled. "It is true, when I was still around he was often disappointing you in one way or another, and when he looks at you...Oh...I could puke remembering his disgusting face. How I wish I was around to kick his ass." he said and I burst out into laughter. " That's what I want to hear.""What?" I asked confused."To hear you laugh. Surely I'm missing a lot. I wish I were with you just to see you smile.""Awwwwnnnn. It seems like I'm speaking to a completely different guy, not the one who cries with me whenever I'm sad. I must say I am touched and thanks to the opportunity you got.""Keep rambling. I won't try to calm you down again. Never." he said stubbornly."I guess I was wrong after all, you are still the same immature guy I've known all my life.""What... You call me immature?"Have you ever checked yourself, you are worse than a child's immaturity?""Seriously? When have I ever acted like a child?""Oh....Do you want me to remind you? That's what I'll do but are you ready for the bomb," he said dramatically."Bomb? What bomb?""Did you think I did not know how Aunt Penny's expensive shoes got to Clover's mouth?" he said and my jaw dropped."What?" I asked him in awe."You sound surprised. You should know that anything I put my mind to, I would find out sooner or later, Just imagine, she would be so excited if I give her a phone call but when she hears about how her shoe or who got her shoe ruined, ohhhh....she would be so mad. I'm sure she wouldn't have forgotten, it seems to be a very precious one to her even if it was when we were young.""Xavier....""Let's say I've got my ways of finding out truths. Don't you think I should become a detective? Detective Xavier. Did you feel that? You can call me DX for short.""Shut the fuck up.""You still have that sharp tongue but remember you can only use it but can't raise your fists at me." he laughed. "It was nice talking to you and I won't forget my promise. I have to go now. Ciao, Muah." he said before dropping the call and I smiled before packing my plates to the sink after losing my appetite.Xavier and I had been childhood friends since I was six. We've had various scuffles while growing up people began to say that we were behaving like a couple and that we would make a very good pair so whenever we fought our parents would rather leave us to settle than have them interfering but we weren't interested in each other and would often say we would prefer eating trash that being together. Even though we had our fights, we were partners in exhibiting tyranny wherever we went.I smiled when I remembered how we had humiliated a lady at one of the get together we often had in the neighborhood. Xavier and I had always regarded her as a zombie because of the heavy makeup she always had on. That fateful day after discussing her Xavier had dared me to move over to her and call her a zombie. She was so enraged when I called her, that she had to leave the function in embarrassment but unfortunately for Xavier and I were given the trashing of our lives.Chuckling, I made my way out of my apartment but stopped abruptly."He moved in already?" I thought aloud, listening to an acoustic guitar playing from inside the door next to mine. The thought of my first encounter with him alone made me flush in embarrassment. Sighing I left for work but there was a thought going through my head all along.𝑇ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑚𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑐 𝑠𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑎𝑟 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒? I couldn't place it and I thought for a moment that it was a guitar someone gave me in the past. At work, the pain got worse and I couldn't get the strumming of the guitar out of my mind which unfortunately, led to a migraine."What's up with you today? You look like you are lost in a jungle of thoughts." Alex voiced during lunch."Me?" I looked up to see him squinting his eyes at me."Yeah, you. Is something wrong?""Hm, no.""Then something must be wrong with you? Are you ill?" he asked, placing the back of his palm on my neck. "Wha....." he shouted removing his hand. "Why didn't you tell me?""Because I didn't know how to tell you.""Why? Are you crazy? why? why didn't you know how?""I was scared that you would tell me to go to the hospital and give me a break thereby leaving you all alone here without me to help," I said and he laughed."You are a drama queen, you know? You don't want to visit the hospital, why?""Well, the smell of the disinfectant makes my stomach turn, and seeing all the sick people I would feel worse." I cringed remembering the smell."Still, you have to go. It might be contagious and I don't want to fall sick because of your fear." he paused to glare at me. "Since the boss isn't around yet, you can take a week off to treat yourself.""What? A week? No, I can't." I shook my head."Don't be stubborn, Charlotte.""I'm not stubborn. I just think that a week is too much. I know by the day after tomorrow I'll be fine.""You said you're not stubborn when that's how you are behaving. Charlotte you can't change my mind a week or you'll regret it.""But who's gonna help you.""I was doing fine before you came along so I'll manage.""But...""Miss, you don't wish to see how angry I can be so to prevent it listen to me. When you are through with your lunch you can go.""Okay." I replied. "What? After lunch?""Yeah and you should go to the hospital first before going home" he ordered."Okay," I said defeated as I finished my meal.I had tried to convince Alex that it wasn't a problem for me to stay till we were done for the day but it fell on deaf ears feeling how weak I was, I became too lazy to go to the hospital but groaned when I remembered I still had to go to the grocery store. While picking out stuff, my eye caught someone on the other side of the room.He stood at the snack column looking through the snack, dressed in blue jeans and a white shirt that hugged the muscles looking hotter than the time I saw him last but when I looked to his side my heart shattered all over again.Beside him stood a lady, who I remembered he had introduced to me once in the past as his high school friend, who he had once had a crush on, wearing matching outfits with him and they looked perfect for each other."Idiot." I mumbled as I wiped a stray tear from my cheeks and turned back so they wouldn't notice me but either I was too slow or they were too fast."Charlotte." I heard her but acted like I didn't as I continued to walk to another section of the store. "Charlotte." she called again but this time she was behind me.Breathing in sharply, I turned to face her and I was relieved to see that he wasn't beside her."Hey, Zoe." I said as I put on a pretentious happy face."How have you been?" she beamed at me.Zoe was a nice and gentle person so I knew her question was random and not to hurt my feelings."Great.""I saw you from over there." she pointed to where he stood and he smiled at me before he began approaching where Zoe and I stood. "And I couldn't help but approach you." she continued."Oh." I began to feel uncomfortable."Hey, Charlotte." He said on getting in front of me and his sweet voice rang in my ears."Hi.....Hi Dave." I stuttered and immediately felt like a fool.Embarrassed, I looked down and my eye caught something on his finger."You......" I looked up to look at both their faces, stunned."You must be surprised but Dave and I are about to get married," Zoe said without the intention of hurting me which it did badly."You are engaged?" I asked for confirmation as I looked at her."Yep, we are getting married this weekend and we are inviting you over." she said and I looked from her to Dave."Me?" I asked, my gaze still on Dave."Yes," he said softly and I began to shake my head in disapproval."Charlotte," Zoe called as she reached for my hand. "I know it must be hard for you since you and Dave had a past." she paused as she looked at me. "But it would mean so much to me......to us if you can be there...""As what?" I snapped at Zoe and I immediately regretted it as I felt like a jealous past girlfriend, which I was. "I'm sorry but you must know that I would ......." I paused for some seconds to draw air into my lungs. "I don't want to ruin your special moment so I'm sorry I can't." I said as I began to move away but a grip on my wrist stopped me."You won't" Dave said and I looked from his hand on my wrist to his face. "We are friends and I can't .....I can't help but feel bad if you aren't there.""Yes, Charlotte. Please." Zoe pouted."Zoe, I can't, you...""You can please, please, please." she continued pleading with me and soon Dave joined her."Okay, I'll come but....""It is concluded then, make sure to come early. I'll text you the venue and the time. Thanks, Char." she said before she pecked my cheeks."Make sure to treat yourself, you look sick." She said."Zoe...""She is?" Dave asked her before reaching to touch my forehead."I'm alright." I tried reassuring them."You're sure?"He asked arching his eyebrow."Yeah," I said putting on a faint smile."Okay then, we'll have to get ongoing. Bye." she said as she took a hold of a smiling Dave's hand before I could say anything they had gone from my sight.Sighing, I finished my shopping and went home. After that scenario, I couldn't think straight as the picture of them together and also how Dave and I were in the past kept popping into my head making me see the truth. Dave kept looking at her so lovingly and affectionately, a side that I haven't experienced before. "It's for the best." I stated, cleaning a stray tear from my cheeks before entering the elevator with my head bowed. Sadly, I wasn't strong enough to keep my emotions in check and I began to tear up. "Are you okay?" a deep and husky voice said behind me thereby making me jump as I thought I was alone. "Yeah." I sniffed, bringing my hand to my face to wipe the tears from my cheeks when I saw a hand holding a handkerchief towards me. "Thanks." Collecting it, I cleaned my tears and when I turned back to return the handkerchief my breath was caught in my throat, I was speechless. He was the guy from the other day, who had dressed in black, and surprisingly he was still dressed in the same manner just that today he wore
The rest of the week dragged on with me at home treating myself. As fate would have it, the weekend came and here I was, at the entrance of the Church, where Dave was going to get married, now decorated with flowers. From the entrance where I stood, I could see familiar faces whom he had once introduced me to as his fiancée.'Why did you accept to come here in the first place?' my subconscious accused me.'I didn't, I was forced.''No, you weren't. You had the whole week to give him a call, with an excuse why you can't.' my subconscious attacked back and I shook my head vigorously."Are you alright?" I heard a clear, calm voice behind me.Turning around, my twilight meet with a pair of ink iris pairing back at me in amusement and I raised my eyebrow in inquiry."You seemed confused?" he chuckled."Ohhh." I simply said and looked at him again. 'He looks familiar or.....'"Do I kn......""Hey, Charlotte!" a familiar voice squealed behind me, before engulfing me in a tight hug, thereby cu
'Pain.'Pain was the only feeling I felt at that moment. My head was banging in agony, and I couldn't even find it in me to move my body. It felt like I was tied down and couldn't move of my free will. After what seemed like an eternity passed before I could open my eyes. Only to be met by the ray of the sun that seeped through the crystalline window.“Shit.” I groaned as I shifted uncomfortably on my bed just to find it a lot comfortable than mine, and it was softer than my rock bed.Snapping my eyes open, I realized I wasn't in my room, and I wasn't in my bed. The pain was overshadowed by the fear that had begun building into its climax in me.'How......'Startled, I jerked off the bed only to be hit by an agonizing headache.“Argh…”'Where the fuck is this freaking place?' 'Why the fuck am I here?' 'What on earth happened to me?'I began walking around the room to find any clue or any escape route. My eyes widened in shock when I stood in front of the mirror.“Fuck.” I muttered.I w
Today was very hectic at work as the CEO was coming by and Victor, the new manager, was doing his best to impress him by showing how well the restaurant ran under his care. The kitchen was extra busy as he insisted that we make different courses of the meal.“Ms. Miles, Victor requests to see you in his office ASAP.” Riele, one of the waitresses, rushed into the kitchen. “And he seems to be angry.” Confused, I asked her. “Victor? The manager?”“Yeah.” She said before leaving.Panicking, I looked into Alex's eyes while I took off my apron, but he was as confused as I was wondering.“Don't worry. When hasn't he been angry?” Alex tried comforting me.“But this time he requests to see me?” I whisper-yelled before going out of the busy kitchen. While I walked to his office, I tried calming myself down, but it wasn't working as the rumors of how strict he was with the employees and how he acted like a total jerk. The thought alone made me shudder in fear.I tried to look composed and calm b
Life at work has been harder and depressing ever since he stepped his feet into the restaurant. If I had known that it was his restaurant, I wouldn't have signed up for a job there. Now I wake up every day with a headache, worried that he'd find fault in whatever I do, giving him a tangible reason to terminate my employment.Though while at work, he acted like I didn't exist, and it was enough for me not to care. But when it got to the point when he came to the kitchen to check what we had been preparing, I was affected. I'll give him the credit for being efficient as the owner and didn't act like a jerk when it came to his work. He was attentive to every detail and others. His move was perfect, in that the workers had a fan club dedicated to him.“Char, take a break,” Alex shouted over the sizzling meat as he came back from his break.I was glad when I entered the locker room to meet it empty. Holding my peanut butter with sandwiches, I sauntered to a bench. I was about to eat when so
It was like he felt my eyes on him when I saw his cute brown head begin turning to me. His blue eyes widened in shock when they landed on mine and a single word came out of his mouth.“Fuck.”When the silence between us was becoming unbearable, I opened my mouth to speak and closed them immediately back like a fish.“Hey.” He said, his tone laced with uncertainty.“Ryan?” I asked, still doubting if it was him.“Diane.” He replied in the same tone.“Wha... What are you doing here?”“I came h.....”“Wait a moment.” I pointed my forefinger at him, hushing him. “You are the annoying neighbor?”“Annoy….”“I can't believe someone like you can be a lover of loud music. I thought you were a softie?”“A softie?”“And you were that creepy guy in black?” I asked hands akimbo.“Shit.” He cursed, running his fingers through his hair in frustration.“Why did you do it? Did he force you into it?” I asked softly.“He?.. No, no one forced me into this or anything. I..... I only wanted to stay hidden fo
Sighing, I knocked on the door, and not long after a petite brunette stuck her head out.“Charlotte?” She squeaked.Nodding my head, I smiled at her. “Sydney.”Her mouth dropped open as she kept staring at me. “Can I come in?” I asked after a stretch of uncomfortable silence.“Ye...yes.” She stuttered, opening the door wider for me to enter.Walking in, I could help but envy the manner which in her house was well organized and neat.“What would you like?” She asked rubbing her hands on the briefs she wore.“I'm okay but I need to talk to you," I said and I saw her pull a tight smile on her lips. “Sydney, I'm sorry.” I continued as I began moving back to her.“Sorry for what? You did me no wrong,” she stated, laughing it off.But I saw through her act. “Please don't be like this?" I pleaded with her, placing my hand on hers.“Like how?"It had taken me a lot of courage to come over and I wasn't going to let it go downtown.“Sydney, I'm sorry for treating you like that.” I paused to loo
“No, Sydney we are not doing that again," I shouted as I ran in the store, not minding the states people were giving me.“But it would look yummy on you." She persisted as she ran after me.“No!"I was already getting tired but I wasn't going to give up. My vision was also getting blurry due to dizziness and I was grateful that people paved the way for me.Catching a glimpse of an opened door, I went straight for it and turned the lock not giving her a chance to get in when she caught up with me.Coughing, I wheezed due to loss of breath and on turning to see where I had ended up.“Oh my...." I gasped. In front of me stood someone I can call a demigod. He looked immaculate. From his upturned ink eyes to his pointed nose down to his thin lips. He was an eye candy”Excuse me?"'Oh my...' I could feel my legs turn jelly hearing his honey sweet voice.”Excuse me?" He called again and I snapped out of whatever trance I had gone into.“Oh hey." I smiled as I awkwardly waved at him.”If I may
CHARLOTTE'S POV.“Nah, I don't think I'll go.” I refused popping an almond seed into my mouth.“You guys click, you have to give it a try before refusing.” Diane tried convincing me but I was stubborn.“You don't even know his name and you are convinced that anyone who goes out with your friend clicks.” “I might not know his name but Xavier does and if he trusts him, I also do.”“Don't be so cheesy. Moreover he's going to be my boss, how do you expect me to date and work for him? I don't wanna go through that route again.”“Think of it like this, you both first met at a store and then you went to the cafe waiting for your interviewer only to find out he's the one again. Girl, I'll call this fate and nothing else.”“Fate that I should work with him, that's all.” I concluded.“You know there might be a chemistry between you two, not as an employer and an employee but as lovers.”“Lovers of work.” I smiled.“Oh stop it, I'm being serious here.”“Me too!” I shoute
FIONA'S POV.“How about this lip tint?” Amanda asked, walking up to me as she applied it on her lips.I shook my head. “Hmmm, I'm not sure about that. It doesn't look like your style. It looks weird.” I hit her butt jokingly as I checked through the shelf.“I want to try more something bolder. Most of the ones I have are cool colour and moreover guys are attracted to bold girls.” she giggled.“You are such a slut.”“Speaking of guys, what about the guy you said you went to his company? Hm.. Keith right?” she asked and my hands paused mid air. “Did his mom get back to you?” she continued. “I guess not.”“You know, I heard that when his mom tells him to do something, he obeys without question.”“Ohh, she's aristocratic. Interesting. But you know she has to be careful cause he's slipping out of her hands without her knowledge.”I was about saying ‘It can't be possible' when my phone rang.“Speaking of the devil.” I smiled seeing the caller's ID.“Fiona, where are yo
FLASHBACK“Miss. Diane, I won't be home that often so you should feel comfortable.” Keith told Charlotte after the third day she had arrived at his home. “Just feel at home, I'm sure that there are places you'd love to visit so just be free and do what you want. As long as it doesn't breach the contract.” he added.“Okay.” Charlotte managed, too surprised at him.“If that's understood, I would be going now.” he smiled before leaving the house all to her.Stunned, she couldn't tear her gaze away from the entrance. In all of the work she had done, this was the first time someone told her to feel at home and not bother about him.Spinning around swiftly, she squealed before running into her room.Throwing a faded jean and a blue tank top on, she went back to the living room. She was already stepping out when Jack showed up infront of me, startling me.“Sorry, for scaring you.” “No need to apologize, Jack. Moreover, I was too excited.” she beamed happily at him.“Mr
My grumbling stomach woke me up from sleep and I rose from the bed grudgingly. As I sat up from the bed, I checked my phone. It was 1:12 am. It was becoming a habit to wake up hungry at midnight ever since I had the accident. Carefully through the hallway in order not to stumble into anything, I sluggishly found my way to the equally dark kitchen and I rummaged the wall for the switch. Turning it on, I shrieked at the view in front of me, sending any traces of sleep from my eye.In my line of view were Xavier and Diane smooching on my kitchen counter. On my kitchen counter!!They immediately stopped what they were doing when the light came on but I had already seen the inevitable.“What the...” I cursed and a flushed Diane quickly pushed Xavier forward as she jumped down from the counter. “Wait.” I stopped her from moving over to me. “Don't come over, just.. just continue with what you were doing. I...I only came to get a refill.” I said thankful that I held my water flask.A smile wa
AUTHOR'S POV.“Diane, what the....” Charlotte lunged at her friend who immediately ran behind Xavier for cover.“I'm sorry I had to do it.” Diane defended and her eyes widened in disbelief.“You.. you ha...you had to do it?" She scoffed at her as she clenched her fists.“I'm sorry,” Diane repeated.“You are sorry? Where do you expect me to start looking for a job? You out of all people should know how hard it was for me to secure this and you went ahead to drop a resignation letter on my behalf behind my back?”“I just felt that you needed the space.” Diane innocently mumbled audible enough for her to hear.“Space?” Charlotte hissed before veering around to Xavier who held back in all of this.“Did you hear her? She said she thought that I needed the space? The fucking space?” she laughed angrily as she paced back and forth. “You see that's what you don't fucking get, there was never a damn closeness, to begin with. Any closeness is damn buried in the past so there's no
I wish I was dead and that my eyes never opened to life but I was so wrong. The strong scent of antiseptic filled my nostrils and I weakly opened my eyes to a strange room, painted in white. I tried to turn my head when a great pain struck me.Lying still, I closed my eyes as I thought it could relieve the pang.“Is she dead?” I heard a whimpering voice beside and I snapped my eyes open in an instant. I saw a fragile figure standing by my side though it was blurry I could still decipher who it was with the way she spoke.“Diane?” I crooked as my throat felt too dry.“Let me get the doctor.” someone else spoke but I was too surprised to see her here so I didn't see the person.“Charlotte?” she jumped on me as she cried harder and I whimpered in pain. Shooting up instantly, she looked at me emphatically. “I'm sorry.”“What are you doing here?” I managed again but before she could make a reply a doctor came in.Throughout the examination that the doctor did, my sole concentration was on
“It was so frustrating.” I lamented as I relayed the events of the past months to Diane.“I made you go through this, I'm sorry.”“It isn't your fault, you had no option but to stay back.”“So what happened when you met him at Dave's?”“What do you expect? He acted like I didn't exist.” I shrugged making an effort to brush off the stinging impact it had been on me. “Enough of me. What about you? How are you managing?” I switched the course of the discussion.“I just got a job as a personal assistant,” Diane declared “Congratulations babe.”“You know. Xavier came over today.”“Tell me more.”Diane was about to speak when the doorbell rang.Darting towards the door, I cut through her words. “Give me a minute, please. I think the delivery is at the door.” Standing from the sofa I trudged towards the door and the bell rang again. When I eventually unlocked the door, regret washed through me as I blamed myself for not checking through the peephole.Wearing a stern face, I asked coldly. “
KEITH POV.These past few months have been hell for me. The pain unbelievably grew to a point I felt like I was going to fall dead at any time.Seeing her smile, my heart twisted in longing. She looked more beautiful than she had been and with every passing day, it did me no good. It was pure torture. The more I saw her around the more I wanted to know about her.I had never imagined that I'd be going over to Dave's but here I was at their entrance arching to know more about her because she was driving me crazy beyond imagination. Finally gathering the courage I rang the doorbell.”Keith.” Zoe squealed in excitement when she opened the door.”Hey." I waved a little smile on my face.”Who's that Wifey?” I heard Dave's voice behind her and she opened the door widely, revealing me to him.”Long time no see....bro.” I grinned at him as I pocketed my hands shifting from one foot to another.“You!” he shouted as he pounced at me, tackling me to the ground.A
