December 2, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia
The food that was served to us last night for dinner was satisfying, and today, our breakfast is also a satisfying one and will surely give us enough energy for our first day on a mission.
Our room is just spacious enough to accommodate Sean and me, and because he unexpectedly announces that I will be sleeping with him, of course, there is only one bed in the room. Nowadays, liberty is really a normal thing and is not something big deal, so of course, both of us did not mind sleeping in one bed and note that I am not wearing a bra whenever I sleep.
Currently, we are unloading things in our duffle bag and stuffing them in the closet which of course, is also one and we will use it together. The closet despite being small is enough for our clothes since we did not bring many, just a few. The room is complete with everything that we need too, like a hote
December 6-7, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia After spending our first day studying the data that was sent to us through our email, we started in our mission the next day after that. Although I have read the file over and over again the other day, it still does not make sense at all, and I am not the only one who has that kind of interpretation in the file. So even with the file, we still start from zero, from the basic. The first part of our research is to review the processes they did about the UVirus, and we will use that as our reference. We will find what went wrong, if they did not make it right that's why they failed to get anything about it. But after two days of thorough reviewing and pointing out things, we found out that they did nothing wrong. The steps are right, the equipments they use are right. So on our third day, we started to do it on our own. We did not make the process
"Besides Rosella, I've heard you say the F word for the second time now. And I swear, if I hear you say that again, I'll kiss the daylight out of you. And I will make sure you will stop fussing about the rumors." I stop breathing and gulped several times, and then his lips quirk up and formed into a sexy smirk, leaving me breathless even more. When he leaned back, I step back and drag air in my lungs, while he has this triumphant smile on his lips. He sits on the edge of the bed and stares at me, legs and arms crossed. "You know what, we can do something so that you won't think about the rumors anymore. It adds on the things you need to think about." "And what do you suggest that we do?" I retort, now able to breathe properly. "Let's make it real." And again, my lungs stop working as I hear him say those words. "Come again?"
December 8, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia Dr. Jhero is now keeping an eye on me and is watching my moves. I don't know how to feel about that. And after knowing that he's now keeping an eye on me just because of our heated conversation on our first day here, his presence that gives me the feeling that something is off only intensifies, not just that, I now feel that something is up with him. The sleepiness that I feel vanished after Sean told me that things. Currently, I am lying on my back while his arms are wrapped around me. He's sound asleep while here I am, eyes closed but my mind is fully awake, overthinking. I sighed again for the I don't know how many times tonight before I decided to go to the quarter's pantry for a drink. I carefully lift Sean's arm that is resting on my tummy. He stirs but did not wake, and I silently got out of the bed and creep out of the room. The silent an
They say do not raise expectations so that in the end, you won't get hurt when the outcome did not come as you expected it to be. This is such an old saying, but even these days, it is still applicable in every circumstance. Even when the analysis is still not done, we could see that just like the first one, we won't get anything about this UVirus. Still, we expected something. In the end, we were all disappointed to see that the result does not make sense at all. We sat all together, the result in front of us, and brainstormed to see if something went wrong. We've gone brain out, but we did not see anything wrong with the procedures. Everything is fine, everything went well, still, the results came out to be like this. No sense at all. Our shoulders fell in disappointment as realization dawned us, our efforts come out to be for nothing. "See, the problem is in the UVirus." Dr.
"W-what? Are you s-serious?" I stuttered. He hugs me tighter, "Sshh, silence. He can hear us if we talk louder than this one. He could be watching us right now." The realization then dawned on me after a moment, I secretly look around, hoping to see something strange or suspicious but of course, I didn't see any. Sensing that I finally understand his point, Sean advises me to stop acting that way or else we'll be doomed. "What you are thinking is right. We are in Dr. Jhero Colleti's lair, so, therefore, he has access to everything. There are invisible cameras and recorders installed around. So he could hear us, and see us." "But how?" I ask in a whispered voice, careful not to be heard by the recorders installed around. "That's invading someone's privacy, and there is a law saying that you couldn't put hidden recorders and cameras on someone's private space without consent."
December 9, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia The next day, we were at the meeting room again, talking about our next step for the research now that we got the result of the virus analysis. Sean told me his plan to act like we still don't know anything and that I shouldn't tell anyone about our talk last night, and about what happened in the basement when I tried to sneak in. Speaking of the basement, Sean checked the footages on the system that night when I told him what happened. He was planning to delete the footages that show my intrusion since there are no securities in the monitoring room, they only review the footages every morning. But then he found nothing and said it was like, someone has wiped off everything from the system that will prove my intrusion. He suspects that it was Captain Welton who did it, so we agreed that we'll find a way to talk to him today. Now, back on the meeting, Sean is telling everyone tha
By playing with Dr. Jhero's game, that means I have to be stronger and wiser, and I have to work as hard as Sean does and be careful in every movement I do. When I agreed to participate in this research mission, I only have one goal in mind: to help make an antidote for the virus and stop it from spreading around the world. But now, after knowing all these, I have different goals to make, as well as Sean. He sent another file to me through email and made sure that Dr. Jhero won't be able to get into the SGR Pad's system. The file is a copy of everything that he found out about Dr. Jhero and the Colleti family, and based on the file, their family hides a lot of secrets. From their hospitals around the world to their other businesses, properties, and all, everything about them has a secret. Mostly, those secrets were their non-government covered business deals, underground or illegal businesses, and transactions. They even hav
December 10, 2050 - Outside the Facility, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia Captain Welton and Sean agreed to meet outside the facility at exactly 12:30 am, so basically, it is already midnight. Of course, I didn't let Sean go without sleep. I ordered him to take even just a nap which turned out to be a couple of hours sleep. On our way outside, as we wait for the elevator to bring us up, I was nervous. Bile was on my throat, my hands are sweating despite the cold night, and I am sweating profusely. One of the rules of the facility is not to get out without prior notice and approval from the administrators and Dr. Jhero. "Sean, are you sure we wouldn't get caught?" I ask as the elevator ascended. He turns in my direction and his eyes narrowed seeing me sweat and tremble in nervousness. He holds my sweaty and cold hand and brought it to his lips. "Babe, calm dow
Hello! If you reach this part, then I love you and thank you for going all the way here. This part is to thank everyone who spent their time and money to read One In A Million, thank you so much! Writing this one wasn't an easy game. I spent three months writing it while classes are ongoing. I've experienced mental blocks and severe headaches several times while going on with the story, but it was all worth it knowing that finally, One In A Million reached its ending. This is my first ever Science Fiction story, and the second novel I finished this year, 2021. I know you see plot holes in it, the grammatical, and typographical errors, and I promise to strive harder to get rid of those and be better in the future. I know I still have to learn a lot and I am more than willing to learn. So, again, thank you, readers, thank you for spending your time and money to read each chapter. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Also, thank you to my fa
Fifty Years Later... A half-century has pass and the world finally recovered from the immense effect of Dr. Jhero's parasites fifty years ago. With the help of the dead's funds in their bank accounts, we used them to fund the budget needed to reconstruct streets, bridges, city facilities, buildings, villages, and houses. We didn't only focus on reconstructing the said buildings, but we also lend budget for agriculture, and technology remodeling. Sean's inventions helped a lot. A day after we came back to Philadelphia, the video I was referring to was decrypted automatically and it was a message, telling us what he wanted us to do with his inventions. He wanted us to use them as a part of our new beginning, and that's what we did. Though there is more, his creations were named not just his, but there is also my name on it. At the end of his video, he said that he wants our child to take care of his unfinished inventions and use them too to ma
January 1, 2050 - Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia The scene wasn't the same when I first saw this place. Sure, it is still isolated, with only big rocks, Acacia, and Eucalyptus trees around, but the whole place looks devastated. The proof of the blast was visible, it became even more eerily isolated. Sure, the crater was large and deep before, but it became larger and deeper now. With just a look, I know it wouldn't be easy to get up once you fall on this big hole and worst, you might die because of the obvious hard bed of huge rocks on it. I know there is no chance of survival in this one, and those people who were left here to sacrifice will be buried underneath this crater forever, including Sean. I sigh when I feel my emotions trying to resurface again. I can't let that happen now. Last night, I promised myself that I won't be an emotional freak anymore. I will strive hard to be a strong individual if I wanted to move
December 31, 2050 - Alice Springs Airport, Australia It has been a week since everything about Dr. Jhero's dirty plan ended, it has been a week since lives have been sacrificed, it has been a week since I lost Sean. On December 25, we celebrated Christmas despite our situation, everyone celebrated to welcome a new start, and a few moments from now, we will celebrate New Year and welcome 2051 as the new era, the restart of the world. For the past few days, dad and the military force has been busy doing rescue search for the others who survived but did not make it with us. There are newcomers, but because Alice Springs Airport is already full, they were transferred to another survivor's facility. And despite the business, dad never forgot to spare some time for New Year's celebration which will happen moments from now. I look at my wristwatch and caress it softly. Aside from the life inside me, this is my remembrance of Sean, one
December 24, 2050 - Alice Springs Airport, AustraliaRosella Marie Hawl's Point of View It's been hours since we landed in Alice Springs Airport, still in Australia. This country is the safest place of all since they only have a small rate of zombies here. So, dad decided to bring every survivor here, and make Alice Springs Airport our quarters since this place too, don't have a lot of damage since every zombie were out there, on the streets. The explosions wreaked havoc in every city in the whole world. Buildings collapsed, streets were messed with debris, and cars, footbridges, bridges, and public facilities collapsed as well, everything is a mess. Everybody is busy setting up more tents too to make a temporary shelter for survivors who just came, though when we landed here, there were already tents set up. The others were also busy distributing foods to eat and giving medical assistance, they were all busy outside to start a new li
Captain Axel Welton's Point of View As a soldier, I was always ready and willing to do certain sacrifices just to ensure my comrades' safety, the civilians, our country, and to ensure the success of our mission. That is also one of the reasons why I didn't give interest in romance. Because I know that in my job, I could die anytime. Today, I am again willing to sacrifice my life, and this time, it is not just for the country, but for the whole world. It is not just for the now and my country, but for the future generation and the whole world. But then, I didn't think that I will witness a scene like this, at this time. Normally, when we are on a mission and the situation is between life and death, we would just close our eyes for a moment and utter our silent goodbye if we won't make it alive, wishing it would be carried by the wind to our love ones. But this... It is a scene far from what I expected, far from what I know. And
When someone's mind is set on a goal and is determined to reach that goal, you couldn't do anything for it to back down. A determined heart and mind never back down they say. And Sean is proof of that. Even after knowing that I am pregnant and that we are having a child, he still goes for the plan. He is still more than willing to sacrifice his life for everyone, for us, and our son's generation. It makes me proud and at the same time, devastated. Presently, we are standing at the crater, with the camouflage helicopters around, slowly being filled with medical workers ready to get back to their families. The first batch has flown and is now probably waiting at Darwin's airport. One by one, they left with hearts full of hope and at the same time, melancholy for those who will be left here and ensure the future. But nothing can compare to the pain I am going through right now. I still haven't accepted the fact that I cannot do anything
December 23, 2050 - CREF, Wolfe Creek Crater, Western Australia My heart was filled with hope again as we kiss in front of everyone, amidst the time that was supposed to use for our escape. Public display of affection to the highest level is not something I liked, but I didn't give a damn to anything in the world as of now, and I just give all my attention in our kiss, pouring our affection for each other. When our lips parted we were both catching our breaths as our foreheads were once again pressed together. His other hand traveled down to my tummy and gently pressed his palms on it, feeling it. "Is it true? You're... you're pregnant?" he stammered, and I nodded."H-how..." "Two weeks," I uttered. "I am two weeks pregnant. I just found this out two days ago, my period was one week late, and it never came late before, so I tried a pregnancy test, and it was positive, Sean. I was just waiting for the right time to tell this to y
Rosella Marie Hawl's Point of View The feeling of excitement, hope, and fear fills the room as dad announces our departure from the facility. They have planned everything, and they know that Dr. Jhero is hiding right now, still planning for his next moves, and they used it to bring us out of this facility. "I just hope this will all be over, for real! I can't wait to come back to my family." "And let us pray for a safe trip back home, as well as our families." Everyone is getting ready to go while I didn't move even a single muscle, knowing what Sean has on his mind. And I couldn't let him do that, although I know I couldn't do anything about it. "Rosella," I came back to my senses when I felt a hand on my shoulder. When I look up, I saw Gabriel, Sean's brother. He has this small smile on his lips while looking at me, and I know he has an idea of what I am thinking right now. He motions his head in a
